About This Game

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a co-op Action RPG that immerses you and your friends in a brutal new chapter in the War of the Ring. Snowblind Studios is in the unique position of drawing inspiration from both the literary and film rights to world of Middle-earth, allowing players to bloody their axes on a wide range of deadly enemies and traverse both established and never-before-seen locations. The result is a journey that is both epic and intimate, familiar yet unexpected.

Key Features:

  • Action Meets RPG - Intense, visceral, and satisfying combat. Rich, layered, and impactful character progression. In War in the North, you get both. Find and equip the best loot, upgrade your hero using a wide range of skills and items, and feel the intense satisfaction of rushing into real-time battles with friends by your side. Fight through the brutal realities of the war on all fronts that were brought to life in the lore. Immerse yourself and make your own mark on Middle-earth.
  • Co-op at its Core - Build your own fellowship of three heroes to confront the growing army in the North. The survival of your group and all of Middle-earth depends upon your uniquely skilled heroes working together. You must fight together or you will die alone, and these high stakes make the experience of playing together both socially engaging and incredibly satisfying. The first time you rescue a friend who has been grabbed by a troll and is desperately yelling for help, you will understand what we mean.
  • An Untold Story - While much attention and focus has been placed on the journey of the One Ring, the assault on Middle-earth hits all corners of the map. War in the North turns our attention towards an integral part of the storyline that is grounded in details within the books and various appendices. This is not someone else’s fight. This is your own effort to forage a way through the dark, dangerous, and unknown landscape, defending all that is yours. This is your war.

Its definetly worth a playthrough. Perhaps not a second. It was decent enough for me, though that may be due to the LOTR setting and choppin up dem orkz. One complaint is there wasn't enough dakka.

Solo[/b] : the AI is dumb as ♥♥♥♥, the only thing they do good is that they evolve their stuff. I can't finish the game in solo because the AI is too dumb to make the 2 characters use their spells together, the healer never heals, and the dwarf tank never stays attacking the same target, so the ennemies were all at 95% health when the dwarf died :D

Multi[/b] : you can't play with 2 friends, one will always get disconnected. There are some guides to make it work but you have to use some third party software like hamachi or something like that. But it's kinda fun when it works. The race exclusive secrets you can find are cool, sometimes you drop nice stuff, and fights can be epic with bosses when you are using your abilities right.

In conclusion, a good idea on paper, but not enough money to acomplish it :/

Mediocre at best.

Even the good stuff in it, is mediocre.

Not worth it, unless there is a huge sale and you can get it around 2-3 euros.

Glitches badly in Carn Dum act mostly for ATI video card owners. Not intentionally most likely, but annoying.

If you are a Tolkien work fan, you are better off with other games. Try LOTRO for example, it is way better.

Peace out, game well.

Boring and repetitive.

Kill monsters, loot items, proceed, kill monsters, loot items, proceed, trade, sell junk, buy better items, proceed, kill monsters, loot items, proceed, kill monsters, loot items, proceed, make it to Rivendell so you can have some of the least interesting chats with NPCs ever, get so fed up with the game you don't even care to proceed further and find a way out of Rivendell.

3/10.

I hit an archer 8 times....8 times before he died. Killing mobs in this game takes ages. Also took at least 3 headshots to kill a regular goblin soldier. Don't bother

There is a good game hiding within War in the North, but sadly it fails to find itself or deliver on its potential. The combat mechanics work quite well, the game looks and performs reasonably decent for its age, and the option for co-op adds to the reasons why you should try it out. However, its downfall ultimately lays in the boring story and the method in which it progresses you through the game.

Essentially, you are moving a short distance from area (arena) to area, where the game proceeds to shut you into a zone and begins to spawn wave after wave of enemies for you to defeat. Only once you have cleared these waves will the area "unlock" again to allow you to move on. This is used constantly as the games main progression mechanic and quickly becomes dull and tedious. For the first hour or two this can be overlooked, but once you are a few hours into the game and realise it is just more of the same, monotony quickly robs you of any desire to continue playing.

Add in a few annoying limitations, such a a lack of screen resolutions and "always on" voice chat that cannot be disabled, and it becomes very hard to recommend War in the North, unless you are looking for a mindless hack and slash game to play with two friends.

I am a big fan of the lord of the rings and have thouroughly enjoyed every game i've played. LOTR Conquest has it's up's and down's. I purchased the game with my friend intending to play co-op, but after 10 minutes of play we cannot join each others game. This just completely ruined the game for us, but i continued by myself playing the single player mission. But of course that wouldn't work aswell. The game continues to crash and is just unplayable.

7/10 - Fun game to play (If playable)

This by-the-book action game is nothing special but its supporting cast shines in spite of its uninspired gameplay; unfortunately the sheer number of game-breaking bugs in the PC Port and lack of developer support ruins what little reason there was to play this game.

This is absolutely excellent and one of the best LOTR games since the PS2 era titles.

Definitely worthy of a purchase, solid RPG / Dungeon cawler with very well balanced enemies.
You also have a great stat system and even upgradable armor and weapons.

10/10 underated gem.

Pretty fun game with semi-repetitive combat that gets intresting once you invest into certain skills and a story thats pretty mediocre at best. The game only takes about 8-10 hours to complete if you dont do any of the "side quests". Buy it when its on sale for a couple of dollars and you will most likely have a enjoyable experience

If your a LotR fetishist then this game is deeeeefinaltely for you !

P.S It also has CoOP.

While the gloriously grisly combat was immensely addicting and the authentic lore was the perfect vehicle for the ride through Middle-earth, unfortunately, unaddressed and well documented issues persisted. During my second play-through with the difficulty elevated, my over powered Dwarf wrecking ball encountered too few a challenge.

The stars of the show though were a giant eagle voiced magnificently by John Patrick Lowrie of Halo and Half-Life fame and the coup de gras was the minacious dragon voiced by Keith Szarabajka's guttural and orotund vocals.

+ Flawless Widescreen for FOV adjustments and resolutions above 1080P.
+ ReShade with SweetFX 2.0, Profile "More in the North" by Atyth for visual enhancement.

This is a fantastic game. Great story and detail. I don't believe being able to choose the dialog is necessary, unless it actually changed the outcome of the conversation. Some of the lines are pretty epic though. And the power of the sappers is a bit rediculous, just like the Dwarves explosive bolt (over the top with explosiveness, but super cool). The fighting can sometimes be a little repetative but is awesome enought that you forget about it. The fighting style of each character is so different that each new play though you have the coolest fighter. Yeah good game. One of the best Lord of the Rings spinoffs ever.

This game is actually really good. I bought it to play with a friend of mine but he is gone for a couple weeks and I hadnt played it yet so I decided to. It is so much fun. I love the combat and getting new armour and weapons that are better than what you already have is always good. I reccomend this game for anyone who enjoys a good hack and slash/RPG game and likes the Lord Of The Rings.

With the glut of LoTR games that have appeared, this title was something of a sleeper, yet a hidden gem. The story does well, the gameplay is competent, and even if you're not big on LOTR story or lore, there's a solid fantasy game here nonetheless.

Looks fine, seems to run well, I like their dedication to the setting and lore but..
the combat is really tedious, and as the major part of the game, that killed our enthusiasm for playing any further.
Combat is too repetitive, and too basic for the repetition to be endurable. Some enemies feel too spongey, and some arenas throw too many repetitive waves at you.

Great fun little game. It's nothing complex or mind blowing but it has decent graphics still for 2016, good controls with a xbox wireless controller, runs exceptionally well besides a few bugs and stutters, has different characters who's playstyle and trades vary. It's pretty linear but if you're a lotr fan you'll enjoy it if you like non complex rpg's. I wouldn't hesitate buying it at full price.

It's a decent game, there are just some flaws which bring it down. I originally played through basically the entire game on PS3 until a glitch occurred that made it so I was unable to progress past the spider boss regardless of how many times I beat it.

The game is quite a bit of fun on co-op and the combat is simple and satisfying. However, quite possibly the biggest problem with this is that the game forces voice chat upon you. There is no options in-game to disable the voice, make it push-to-talk, or to even mute other players. There is no way to disable the voice in this game without disabling the audio entirely. This wouldn't be a problem if the game chat was half decent, but from my experience it's delayed, echoey, and just overall unpleasant. Apparently there are work arounds for this, but I couldn't manage to figure them out, and really, I shouldn't have to go through that just to do something that should be so simple. Eventually I found the voice chat as part of the game's charm, but I don't really mean that in a good way.

The skill trees offer a basic variation to each of the characters' playstyles without getting unnecessarily complex. Treasure chests and hidden caches give a reason to off the path in search of better gear. There isn't much exploration to do otherwise, though. If you enjoy always getting new gear and improving stats (like me) then you will enjoy the equipment aspect of this game.

Combat can get a bit tedious and there doesn't seem to really be variation in objectives. It's always going to be go here, defend here, open this all whilst holding off waves of orcs and the like. This is kind of to be expected, though. It's not like there was much else that could have been done with this style of game, but in long sessions you may find the game becoming repetitive.

If you have friends to play this with I would recommend it. Maybe not for $20 though. If you don't have friends, well, the AI isn't all that sturdy from my experience, so you'll be doing a lot of reviving.

Gloin / 10.

Well after about 2 hours of setting up it finally worked. For us, there was a specific order in which we had to set everything up, one of us had to switch to a different computer, the other one had to be the host and every one of us had to make some funny sound settings to disable the ingame voice.

But after all that I really did enjoy venturing out with my friends. The combats were somewhat interesting, though we only finished on normal mode were everything is a little bit too easy, and the abilities matched the characters. We played the default MMO setup with healer (my role), tank and damage dealer, which worked great.

Some abilities seem to be a little overpowered. There is, for example, this big shield (we called it "the bubble"), which deflects every projectile anybody shoots at you and heals you. This includes bosses. Therefore you sit in it waiting and shouting in order to get the bosses in melee range.

All in all, the dialogs are linear but believable and well made, the story feels good and the atmosphere is deep, even though it can get a little monotone after too long periods. The graphics are not the best I've seen even for the time the game was released, but they are still not too bad to look at. The textures of your armor and characters are somewhat well made even though some animations may be a little set off. Sometimes the voice isn't fully synced.

We finished the game in about 10 hours in 3 sessions.

I had fun with this title and would recommend it to action rpg fans in general and anyone interested in Lord of the Rings. I got it for a decent price around $8 and it provided me with around 12 hours of gameplay so I think I got my monies worth :)

You pick one of three characters and journey to stop one of Sauron's generals who plans to start war in the northern realms. You can pick a ranger who can dual wield, a lore master (healer mage) or a tanky dwarf. They generally all play the same with a few unique skills attached to each class. Combat consists of mashing the normal attack and hitting the strong attack once enemies are weak to cause critical damage or finish them off. Levels consist of areas where you have to defeat waves of enemies before the next area is unlocked and you pick up gear for your characters and level up.

I played this game solo but I can see the real fun is with playing with friends which I haven't tried, not even sure if it works or not considering this is an older game. Your AI companions can be pretty dumb often getting preoccupied fighting one weak goon while you get swarmed by enemies. You can only switch between the characters at checkpoints which is a shame and only your main characters look will be affected by what they are wearing.

The music and the voice acting are great although some of the dialogue is cliche. You do have some dialogue choices during the story but it doesn't really matter what you pick. The story itself is weak and predictable and when you finally defeat the last boss you instantly find out that the original Fellowship completed their epic journey making your efforts seem kind of pointless.

Overall great game and still playable in 2016. I only wish you can freely swap between characters in battle and setup all your characters with loot and equipment that you find in the game.
