UPDATE #50: OFFICIAL RELEASE

The time has finally come. Two and a half years since we officially started working on the project, Heart&Slash is released on PC. It's been a long journey, including a successful Kickstarter, lots on iteration on the different ideas on how to properly tell Heart's journey and, most of all, lots of work.

The release comes with the addition of the soundtrack as optional DLC.

We are very proud of the final form the game has reached. Thanks to the feedback from our backers and Early Access players, we think we have managed to reach a level of polish we wouldn't have otherwise. So far, the Steam reviewes are there to back this impression.
We hope it will remain the same and new players will enjoy it as much as we have creating it.

WHAT'S ON VERSION 1.0.0
For the official release we have implemented several fixes and improvements. These stack on top of the releases of the last couple of weeks, which introduced a new version of the third level, Super Elite versions of bots with randomized weaknesses and resistances and a refactor of how the heads worked.

The most important changes coming in 1.0.0 are:
  • Chances of getting a piece of equipment are greater if seen less often than others.
  • COPGORE encounter improvements, including speed, collisions and difficulty.
  • FRANK-Y encounter can be completed faster with physical equipment. But FRANK-Y is also a bit more vicious in its attacks.

And bugixes implemented:
  • Recycling heads with a target locked no longer breaks the camera.
  • Steps sound in third level fixed.
  • Disco Bomb plays in the music channel.

Also included is a present for hardcore players who were trying to unlock all achievements. In the enemies encyclopedia you can now see how many enemies of each kind you have defeated, making it easier to plan your runs.

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE
We still have a Kickstarter goal to complete: the Endless Dungeon mode. We will start working on it now. It should be ready in a few weeks and will be released on a beta channel before going live.

We also have to work on some rewards for Kickstarter backers. We will get in touch with you as things progress.

And, of course, we'll keep fixing bugs and making small improvements gradually.

FOR PLAYERS OF OLD BUILDS
If you were an Early Access player but have not played for some time, be adviced that some configuration files have changed in recent versions of the game. We recommend removing the settings files (and purging Steam's cloud sync for Heart&Slash) before playing again. Check the pinned discussion for information on how to do it.

And that's all. Thanks for the journey and enjoy the game!

Best wishes from the aheartfulofgames team.

UPDATE #49: BUGFIXES

Hi.

Quick update with fixes implemented during the weekend.:

  • Fixed arena in third level that triggered from below.
  • UI adjustments: cutscenes SKIP is visible again, map is hidden when returning to main menu, UNLOCK DESCRIPTOR is not shown at the start of each level.
  • Old shooter camera no longer breaks boss cameras.

And some improvements we've done, too:
  • Chasm rooms in the Factory's first section always have fences.
  • Camera no longer gets inside walls on B-DSS encounter.

KNOWN ISSUES
Recycling a head while targetting an enemy breaks the camera. Make sure you haven't locked a target when recycling a head until a fix is in place.

“Do yourself a favor and pick up Heart & Slash. Especially if you are a retro gaming fan, the graphics, art, and difficulty curve will keep you coming back for more to clean up the Robopocalypse.”
95% – Gamer Assault Weekly

“With tight refined combat, a charming visual style and an endearing main character that reminds me of an anthropomorphic companion cube, Heart & Slash’s throwback difficulty won’t be for everyone but, if you like your games to push back a little and not hold your hand, you’ll find Heart & Slash a rewarding experience that’s well worth the effort.”

About This Game

Heart&Slash is a 3D brawler that is set in a world where machines are all that remains from the Human civilization.

You play as Heart, an innocent robot fighting to escape the grip of the evil and all seeing machine QuAsSy (Quality Assurance Systems).

But make no mistake Heart&Slash is a hard game. Every death is permanent and means a new randomly generated level for you to start over with a different set of weapons and items you can use, new enemies to fight and secrets to explore.

Heart&Slash is an indie game developed by a small but passionate team. We have a tiny budget but big hearts, and we are giving it all to make this game (our first) the best we can.

Features (on final release):
-3 worlds to explore and fight in. Each world includes its unique enemies an bosses.
-Dozens of different weapons and equipment pieces (more than 100 in total) to customize Heart and your play style.
-Perma-death, but a persistent progression system that gives you more options as you play the game.

We hope you enjoy Heart&Slash as much as we enjoy making it!

Welcome!

So I would say that this game is a really enjoyable game.
An hack n Slash Rouge Like or maybe more Rouge Lite.
But there is one HUGE issue I have with it. The game might become unbeatable due to Level 3 being a broken mess.

I really do not want to talk trash about this game. But the fact is that the third level breaks the game to a halt.

Until this issue is fixed I can't sadly recommend this game for those who actually want to... you know... beat it.

Heart&Slash combines a cube world esc art style with hack and slash mechanics. I really do believe that this game has the potential to become outstanding, sadly in its current form it’s not. Much like Salt, it’s not a bad game, far from it. The game just does so many things wrong that it takes away from the overall experience.

Negatives:
Let’s start with my biggest complaint with the game, level design. You will stumble around for ages looking for the end of the level, this is mainly caused by the very confusing and uninspired mini map which gives useful information in the most confusing form possible. The easiest solution to this problem would be to…..well improve said mini map. This way I could see where I’m going without being confused.
My next complaint may be considered minor but in my opinion it does become quite aggravating after a while, this issue is that the game does not allow mouse controls in the menu, pause menu or options menu. Instead you will be forced, hand over fist to navigate these menu’s using your arrow keys of all things! On PC I expect that I can use my mouse to swiftly and efficiently change options or navigate through menus if I desire. Not having mouse support in the menus is quite ridiculous in 2016.
There are a few more minor things which annoyed me like some random FPS drops here and there, the music gets slightly repetitive after a while and as to be expected a few glitches are in the game. But other than those the game is very fun to play.

Combat
I really enjoyed the combat it felt like a real hack and slash game. Left Mouse is your standard hit and Right Mouse is your stun and heavy hit. It’s simple but it fits the game and genre very well! I also really like how well the combat is paced, the developers seemed to have got the perfect speed for their game.

Weapon Variety
The combat is really good in Heart&Slash but the weapon variety is even better! I love the fact that I can beat robots to death with a garbage bin lid! I mean what other hack and slash allows you to do that? In the space of 5 minutes you can go from: A garbage bin lid, to thors lightning hammer to a wooden spear to a Rocket Mace! The weapon variety is great as it not only keeps the gameplay fresh but it keeps you interested as you wonder what weapon you’re going to find next, it also helps that the game has an upgrade system which rewards the player for killing x number of robots.

Graphics
The Graphics in Heart&Slash are a very nice take on the blocky, pixelated art style we have all seen in games like: Trove, Cube World, Minecraft and more recently Portal Knights. However it isn’t your average Cube World clone in the art department, this game utilises a number of highlight colours to line the textures together, the art style is very well done in my opinion.

Conclusion
Overall Heart&Slash is a very fun game which provides a huge variety of weapons, wonderful hack and slash gameplay and a very nice art style, all these things are however let down by: Bad map design, repetitive music and a story which feels tacked on. Heart&Slash gets a 7/10 from me. I really enjoyed this game despite bugs and the replay value is there to anyone curious about that

A roguelite Devil-May-Cry-esque character action game/spectacle fighter sounds like the perfect game. This game is far from perfect, with issues like a way too fast movement speed and finicky jump controls (both of which make the platforming segments some of the worst I have ever encountered in a game), a god-awful camera, and combat with not quite as much depth as I could have wanted.

However, there are hundreds of weapons and weapon combinations and armors to try out, each with their own upgrades and movesets and effects, from tiny fast daggers to giant maces and hammers, and all of them feel really good and fun. Half the fun of this game is unlocking new weapons and trying them out, and there are a ♥♥♥♥-ton to play with, including a giant hammer that turns into a rocket that propels you horizontally or a firesword that shoots out fire trails. There are dozens of armor pieces to unlock too (that you equip to your head, chest, arms, or legs), each with their own effects (including gravity bending or sticking to walls or, my personal favorite, a headpiece that shoots out a giant laser beam). The dodge-evade feels good, as does dodge-canceling. The music is pretty good. There's a lot of enemy variety with some cool attacks, and the bosses are all pretty outstanding.

The plot involving finding your "Vergil" analog and teaming up to stop the big bad and figure out what's going on was a neat little touch, and definitely encourages multiple playthroughs making different choices to get the various endings. Also there are a lot of cool easter eggs, and the artwork and environmental design is great (it's hard to get lost because you just need to observe your environment and look for stuff that gives you clues as to the right path towards the boss, and these same environmental signs also give you clues as to which boss you're going to face at the end of the stage. It's pretty ingenious).

This game needs some unlockable combo moves in addition to the weapon upgrades/movesets (I miss my divekicks and stingers), jump-canceling, a better way to get a feel for the iframes of the dodge roll, a proper universal lock-on camera that isn't tied to some very specific head-armor pieces. And tone down the movement speed and gravity a lot (your character moves and drops so fast that I ran into enemy attacks almost as constantly as I was able to successfully evade them). I also wish it had a boss-rush mode and a pause screen that allowed you to bring up the full map of the area (that you've explored), the mini-map alone isn't quite enough. I can also see a co-op mode being a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of fun.

This game has a lot of HEART, however, so I don't want to SLASH at it too much. I keep coming back to it because it's fun as ♥♥♥♥. The devs put a lot of work into it, and they clearly cared about it. I'm sure the devs can come back to it and tweak it a bit, but this was a good first effort and I can't wait to see what they do next.

Also I'm recommending this because there's a weapon in the game named O&S that also has fire and electricity effects. Like, come on, that's pretty ♥♥♥♥ing amazing.

So, far I really like this game because it's challenging. The various weapons are neat and I love that you aren't stuck with just one. It's visually pleasing, and HEART is kind of adorable. And badass.

Rubbish game. Not worth the money. Story and idea behind the whole thing isn't worth your time. Fighting system and inventory/equipment system is very poorly designed. No introduction to game. You need to play a seperate tutorial to "understand" the game

i havent had much exp with this game, i only made it up to the boss but died because im awful at this game. BUT this game is AMAZING voxel graphics are lovely, it looks a little like Trove (if you have ever played that). The combat is really nice and interesting, you can switch weapons with z and c on the spot so you can mix comboes (each wep has their own style and comboes) and it's reallllyyyy cool. If you have 15 dollars (assuming if its not on sale) and no idea what to spend it on and you like 3d combat, i highly recommend to purchase this

This game is a reasonably fun fusion of roguelike elements and 3d brawler. I don't find it as difficult as some of the other roguelikes I've tried, which may be a plus for those looking for a less savage roguelike experience.

However, in my 3 hours of play, I encountered a couple of issues that prevent me from recommending this game:

1) Occasional random slowdowns during play, particularly during combat. Usually not a problem, but it leads into the next.

2) The platforming in this game is awful. For most of my experience, I didn't run into much in the way of it. However, when I reached the 3rd area of the game, I suddenly found myself flung into a vertical platforming section in which I was forced to jump up to various small platforms while trying to dodge lasers. The overly sensitive controls, speed of the character, and difficult camera angles made this a nightmare. Finally, to top it all off:

3) The level straight up disappeared during this section. I entered yet another room I had to platform through and suddenly all of the level geometry except the walls disappeared. I was left stuck in a room with no means to progress. My only option was to quit, at which point I discovered you cannot suspend the game to pick it up later like some other roguelites allow. The end result was that I had to abandon and otherwise promising run due to a technical issue with the game. I do not consider this acceptable in a game where failure means starting over from the beginning - I barely consider this okay in non-roguelikes.

Conclusion: There's a solid game in here, but the issue's Ive named make it difficult to recommend. If some of this is fixed, then its certainly worth a look.

You'll love this game if you like trying out many different weapon and armor combos.

It managed to keep me entertained with some of the most overpowered items like training weights that grow in strength the more you use them, plumber shoes that let you stomp your enemies into the dust, a headpiece that lets you shoot out a laser every few seconds and so on.

Heart & Slash is a Rougelike action platformer in which you travel through randomly generated dungeons in search for the plot.

No, I mean seriously...

You play as our hero, a robot named "Heart". A fitting title for a small protagonist, whose display monitor displays a heart image. Not much longer after just being assembled, you are told to "Run". Randomly attacked by various robots that for some reason want to kill you, you are given a random selection of weapons and aparrel to fight the threat off. From Baseball bats, Boxing Gloves and Fancy Suits to Rocket Hammers, Shotguns, and... Rubber Ducky outfits?
(oh, and it gets even more weird, but I'll let you find that out on your own)

Throughout the randomly generated levels, you are supposed to complete a sequence of events in a certain way to progress through the story. You will constantly find yourself at the "end" of the game and achieving bad endings before you finally build up to the true ending.

Gameplay wise, the game performs excellent. There's a wide variety of weapons, and each weapon has their own distinct combat style (however some like the Boxing Gloves compared to Badboy Knuckles are simply a difference in attack speed and damage). All weapons and armor have upgrade paths, which are upgraded by junk parts collected from defeated robots.

If you so chose, you are also given the option to "Scrap" weapons or armor pieces. This allows you to convert your gear into health. Sometimes you may end up almost dead in a boss fight, asking yourself if you should give up your shield, or your pistol to save your own skin. Upgraded weapons that are scrapped also give you more health in return.

Performance wise, with my beast of a machine, the game runs almost perfect. However on rare occasions, I do notice very slight hickups when transitioning between some rooms, but I don't think that will be a big bother.

As an Early Access buyer, I found this game very appealing. Through the process, I even helped a bit by finding some really odd bugs (I really miss the invisible Chainsaw glitch). I'm happy to finally see it released on Steam, and I highly recommend for people who like those rougelike games, that seem to be all the rage nowadays.

i'm going to make a counter point to some of the other stated reviews here... the combat isnt slow AT ALL. in the beginnning of the game when you don't know what you're doing and don't have access to better unlocks, it might seem like you're having a harder time against enemies... but keep in mind that every enemy has an elemental weakness, and that if you don't have a weapon to fight a certain type of enemy, 9 out of ten times you can just roll away and run past them.

besides that, i'm going to state my ACTUAL review! The games atmosphere is enchanting, the quests are interesting, and the bosses are beautifully designed!

Pros:
-FUN gameplay with many possibilities [ have the body of a rubber duck, dress pants, and a head that shoots lazers, weilding a giant rocket hammer!]
-Steep but not impossible learning curve
-an abundance of acheivements that you will unlock over time, as well as some that are harder to get that you might have to work for.
-LOTS of replay value, for me, i want to go back right now and unlock the other characters, as well as use all of the available weapons and parts.

Cons.
-some weapons can be relatively unbalanced, like the "vorpal dagger" which pierces armor, deals crit backstabs, and basically teleports you behind an enemy. this dagger is FAR too powerful, whereas most of the gun weapons are worthless of entirely unviable for an actual run, most of the time if i see that it's a gun, i scrap it immediately
-some of the most bizzare platforming issues i've seen in any game. tiny platforms combined with your character's absurd jump is... difficult
-needs just a tad bit more diversity in terms of generation... in 12 hours i feel like i've seen every possible combination of room.... this isn't turning me away only because i'm still interested in the combat, but in terms of exploration, it could use work.

overall, 8.5/10

I would buy it at full price again if I could go back in time.

As close to Megaman Legends 3/Zelda/Dark Souls as I'm gonna get. And I love it. I can never stop playing this game once I start. I honestly map out my day around this game if I want to play it. I need to make sure I'm not supposed to do something important before I think about starting playing this. Because I'll never stop until I fall asleep from mental exaustion lol I love this game! :D

Addendum: Thre's a boss I ran into randomly that I can't run into again for some reason. I fought it and lost. It was the clone of me or something that mutated and got stuck to a larger green robot monstrosity. So cool. Great idea for a boss. Honestly, I play this game to run into more moments like that, the build-up for it was epic. I don't usualy play indie games, but man, when an indie game gets it right, it gets it right. And I get chills. Keep up the great work going out to the developers. :) Very happy about this purchase :)

Tight controls, random but limited loot, a combat system that encourages weapon diversity, and an aesthetic absolutely to die for. Some things are clunky, but usually excusable and infrequent. This game is an experience that you will sink hours into, and is one of the best indie games of the year so far. I plan to play much more of Heart and Slash, and am hoping for future development on its mechanics.

my initial reaction was mixed. then i started unlocking weapons and equipment, beat the first boss, and something just clicked- 4 hours later i'm writing the review. for those complaining about the combat- play a few times to unlock more weapons. it opens up the game tremendously. and if you find the head piece that lets you see enemy health, you can see that different weapons varying damage to different enemy types.

if i got this in the n64/ps1 era i'd be happy to have spent $50. it's a rougelike that feels like a mashup of megaman legends and super mario 64 at times. i was suprised by the variety in playthroughs as well (see: the second boss). i feel like i should have had to pay more.

my only complaint is the feel of the third level- it plays a bit different than the first two stages, and almost feels like it is engaging a different part of your brain. i'm not quite sure what to change (only played it twice). the second time i had a leg piece that made getting around the platforming parts easy. for $13.49 (<$3/hr so far today), i'm still very happy with my purchase.

First-off I want to say that this game looks GREAT.
I love the low-poly art style this game uses and I would love to see more games with similar simple, yet crisp designs.
This game gives me a bit of a Megaman Legends vibe

Heart&Slash is a rougelite character-action game, which is definitely something I was excited to try out.
To explain why I'm giving this game a thumbs down, I need to compare it to the games it clearly takes inspiration from.
In other character-action games like Devil May Cry or Metal Gear Rising, your character is nimble and controls feel tight right from the start. In Heart&Slash, your character runs surprisingly-fast, however combat feels surprisingly slow and clunky. It's not unbearable, but it's underwhelming for sure.
This slower combat frustrates me because I can see that the rougelite/RPG elements of this game reward the player with faster attacks over time, but to me it comes off feeling like the game is intentionally kneecapping it's own controls just to have something to something to give the player later on.

I would much prefer that Heart&Slash be a fun game with rewarding upgrades and unlockables rather than a dull game that tries to convince the game that it will eventually get fun.

This game is great in it's own works.

I am not going to lie when i got this game i though it was going to be a silly exspereance that was gana fade away after a day, but i was happily mistaken. H&S has been one of the most fun gaming exspeirances i have ever had in my life. It has done a numorus amount to be a fresh and exsiting experiance to me and my even give a great time for people to follow.
Even though this game is (well sorta) in development still it has come a great way for it to be this fun. This game in my eyes has taken things from The binding of isaac, Megaman, Metal Gear solid: Riden, and dark souls (the restarting and changing eveiroments bit kinda). This is truly a uniqe and fun game that brings up a heavy amount of challenge to the play. I give this game 100/10
