The Year So Far

If you haven't been sailing around Windward recently, and particularly around the seas of the Tasharen server, you may have missed some of the newly added content that has been in testing there recently. The kind of content that requires some planning, preparation, and patience. I am talking, of course, about creatures like these:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=705711039
Added as a "let's see if it can be done" feature one evening, they've been flying around the Tasharen server for about two weeks now and players have been going after them relentlessly. Why? Well, the unique loot of course! Players lucky enough to defeat a dragon were able to harvest its essence -- a special ammunition type that changed the look and damage type of their cannonballs and their Inferno.

Speaking of damage types, new equipment can now be found in the world that gives improved resistances to elemental damage type ammunition -- which is what both dragons and pirates in heroic instances now use. Heat, cold, acid and shock-based ammunition have all been seen and acquired so far with more to come. These unique and hard to obtain items are still in testing -- so can only be acquired on the Tasharen server for the time being. Still, those that prefer to duke it out solo or with their own friends will be able to try their hand at it soon enough.

The Valiant faction has long been grumbling about the distinct absence of a flying ship that would be more suitable for their tastes. Recently they've gone as far as kidnap the legendary designer ViDanci, showering him with gold and asking him politely to design them a ship (or else). He happily obliged. Dubbed the "Flying Fortress", it can be found flying around in the worlds' more difficult regions for those that still seek its blueprints. Although there are rumors of the Valiant faction offering a cheaper, more affordable way of acquiring its new ship already in the works.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=705710948
There have been more changes an additions, of course. Like always, the full summary can be found on google docs.

Happy sailing!

About This Game

Designed from the start to be a fully procedural co-op game, Windward can be played by yourself, but it truly comes alive when playing with friends. Start by generating a procedural world that will be unique to you, design your own custom faction then sail forward fighting pirates, trading with towns, doing quests or simply exploring -- it's up to you how you want to play.

As you sail about you will find resources you can make use of, upgrades for your ship, new towns that will ask your assistance, and as you get farther out from the starting area -- various pirates that will attempt to take what's rightfully yours. Combat experience will let you unlock new talents and abilities to make that particular line of work easier.

As you take up consignments with towns and fulfill their production shortages, the towns will grow, offering more quests, more resources and better items. As the towns continue to grow they will offer you a choice to upgrade your ship itself. Would you prefer a fast Schooner to explore the world, or a heavy Galleon that's able to take up 5 consignments at once? Or perhaps a massive Ship of the Line to take the fight with the pirates to their heartlands?

As you explore the world and get farther away from your starting area, the game will become progressively more difficult -- but so will the rewards. Throughout all of this you can expect the pirates to put up a fair fight, as the AI is bound by the same rules as the player: they have sight, and must explore the map before they can know what's there.

Speaking of AI, build a fearsome reputation and the AI will respect you, even fear you -- avoiding you if at all possible. Some friendly AI will even choose to follow you and assist you in your own adventures.

And so, on the topic of adventures -- ready to have yours?

DULL and not finished

Why bother with a story?

Why bother with any indication of ways to progress?

This could of been up there with the best of the genre, instead sadly its up there with the worst. You start the game and quickly realise there is no single player story hell theres not even any tutorial. Very disapointed

A funny game, but it's a little bit difficult to have a friend to play with.

but there is one thing...I don't know what to do when I got level.30 or higher
I just want more gamemodes.
But also a better trade system!

This game is definitly worth the $5 I spent on it. It is a peacefull and relaxing game that you can pick up anytime and play for 5 minutes or 5 hours. The music is suiting and sounds great and the graphics are great for the style of the game. With that said the style is very unique and fitting for a 2.5D game. The singleplayer is well built. It offers great customization of the active map and of the 6 diffrent factions. It really hit the nail on the head with the online function of the game. Not a lot of games that have both singleplayer options and multiplayer options can flawlessly pull it off. The online portion of the game features a compony spacific server aswell as other servers that poele can creat them selvs. The Tasharen server being the main server has one of the best comunities on it. Player to player interaction is spot on. The game even has a great pvp system to it. This game is not an mmo and yet I would have to say that it hass better pvp then a lot of mmos that I have played throughout the years. I will say for the time that this game has been out that it has hit some rough patches. However, This game is in my top ten favorit games and would recomend it to everyone.

If you are expecting Sid Meier's Pirates! you will be disappointed. While the game was inspired by it, it's nothing like the golden classic, except that it has ships. There is no Spanish Main to explore, no letters of marque to get, no treasure maps to collect, no relatives to free, no mutinies, no boarding of vessels and no swordfights.

Instead, there is nicely rendered random territories to explore. You will join a couple of factions to choose from, none of which resemble any actual states, but rather traders, warriors, etc. Choosing a faction gives you bonuses to your stats, which you can level up through experience gained from (simple and repetitious) quests and equipment you will find or buy. Since you cannot capture enemy vessels for yourself, you need to unlock and buy stronger ships as you play. You can or rather must conquer territories for your faction, either by capturing cities or colonizing land. All of this takes very very very long. If it wasn't for the fun combat, the game would be a total bore. However, the combat is solid and entertaining; even in Single Player, but you can also play it online with friends.

I don't regret buying this game, but it could have been much more. It was cheap enough though and I could idle away one hour here and one hour there, which fits my time current time budget. Plus, it plays totally fine on my Ubuntu with just an Intel HD 5000.

Great game. Relaxing not stressfull like most games. Nice music. Solo play is fun and its great that other players can join your solo map. I just wish we could purchase ammo, food (for crew), and crew. As in the number of crew and number of ammo and number of cannons, etc. to put on our ships. Other then it being a bit arcady, its a wonderfull game :) I heard rumor you can eventually get a flying ship!? and you can fight Dragons?!.. Well when you get the game get the 4 pack and share it with friends :). Those that say its not enough due to the lack of action can go play some fps and get shot. While the rest of us will be with our crew having a wonderfull adventure accross very large (very large x100) worlds.

Tons of fun to be had in either single player or multiplayer. Your progress is always saved (assuming you join the same server, if online) and the towns / buildings you create remain. I would pay $10 for this easily, and I was lucky enough to get it on sale for $4. Worth every penny! Customize your ship, defeat pirates and/or other factions, or just be a outlaw, or maybe just a simple merchant.
The choice is yours!

Finally found a chill game! :) Solo is great got the game 2 days ago and already have 20hrs. I used to play "Master of The Secret Sea" on Armor games. Loved it. Now I found Windward. :)

- Quit similar when it comes to Quests, trading, and such.
- 20hrs into the game the only difference i find is that the whole map is not loaded and is devided into segments of squars, which can be conqourd by you faction, other faction, or pirates.
32x32 world is liek the size of Europe and in Solo would takes hundread of hrs to conqour.
- You can make and customize your own faction befor starting the game. (Windard)
- No sotry line that i can find as there is a nice one in "Master of The Secret Sea" though ive only played 20hrs so far. Im sure to find something :) Esp. when i heard there are flying boats and Dragon to be found. (rumors not sure if its true)
- Can create new cities via quests and name them anything you like.
-

CONs
- Cant buy ammo ammount nor food ammount (for crew) nor can u buy crew ammount. As in you cant run out of ammo in a fight..... You cant run out of food for your crew.... you cant run out of crew because none of them get hurt in battle??
- - With Devs of windard could add this to make it seem a bit more realistic when it comes to your crew :). If a 2d game can handle it im sure windward can :).

Conclusion: (not inculding my bad spelling)
Great game worth playing with your friends and family :)

This could have been the next "Sid Meier's Pirates", but you will be VERY disappointed if that's what you're looking for. Here's just some of the problems with that expectation, as far as I can tell:

Pros:
-Linux support: The only reason (other than price) that I gave this a try at all.
-Moddable? Supposedly this is moddable, (but it looks like nobody's actually taking advantage of it).
-Procedural world: This is actually pretty great, it'd be tiring going around the same Caribbean (which isn't terribly interesting in the first place) over and over.

Cons:
-WAY too "gamey". Unlike Pirates, this game is full of the standard awful copy-paste MMO gimmicks. Upgrading, "leveling", and a numbers/stats game are favored over skill and experience. (Not saying skill is a non-factor, maybe it is to a small degree.)
-Scale: ships are just WAY too big, towns are WAY too big to the point that it's just annoying. Pirates was stretching things here big time but this game's scale is so far off, any sense of realistic immersion is destroyed. It sounds silly but the biggest pain so far was that due to the sheer size of ships, you're actually spending much of your time avoiding collisions with other ships! Pretty sure that wasn't a real problem, other than during busy port navigation.
-Instances: oh god, please stop it with the MMO feature cloning. This ties into the next issue.
-Transitions and "fast travel": By far the biggest design failure this game has to offer. Probably due to the multiplayer requirements, but nevertheless, moving to other regions has a load screen. Not the huge world feeling you get from Pirates or other older explorer games. Even worse, the the transitions are almost more like "levels" than true world transitions. A major problem with "fast travel" is that you can't just turn around and go back across the "edge" of the map, obviously, so it's another big immersion killer.
-No realism whatsoever: Does wind even matter? Not that it was truly realistic, but wind and weather mattered in Pirates, how did they screw this one up? It doesn't seem like this was given any thought at all.
-"Casual" feel - don't know if it can be or not, but it feels dumbed down enough that it'd be playable on a tablet. If I had realized this I would have moved on.

If you're a stupid millennial with no attention span looking for yet another MMO-like casual game with a built in treadmill, you'll love this. But if you're looking for a modern "Sid Meier's Pirates" game with added depth and realism (as should be expected of a remake), you're going to be seriously disappointed.

Overall its a pretty fun game but can become very...grindy. I got the brigadier in a few hours but could not go into other regions with higher difficulty.
