I was involved in this games community log before i was released. I loved this game more than ever when it came out and even had some input as part of the community in its development. (this was before Petroglyph has official forums(Yeah im that old XD) I love this game to death and have spent many hours away from Steam playing it. I even bought a second copy just so i can play it again. I would have loved for a follow on to this game was made as it was awesome.

my introduction to pc gaming strategy and because i got the disc copy of it when i was 7 how i learned and got into reading (no joke) i got so interested in what they were saying id ask my dad to red those massive text boxes. anyway the modding community is alive and well especially yuzhan vong at war which is a complete and total overhall of the game that will add MANY new things. when the mod finally comes out itll be like empire at war 3 heres a link http://www.moddb.com/mods/yuuzhan-vong-at-war/#6056738 . but anyway this is my favorite strategy game of all time and i reccomend this to everyone.

I've owned this game on disc for a long time and have easily sunk hundreds hours more into it than what I have on Steam. As a kid the battles of Star Wars were mind blowing. So, the chance to play an RTS that lets you command all the inconic units of the original trilogy was a dream come true. This package also includes the Forces of Corruption expansion. This added the criminal empire of Tyber Zann as a third faction, and added additional units and heroes to the Rebel and Empire factions. When launching this game, steam will ask you whether you want to launch the original or expansion, so you can pick whichever you prefer at any time.

For anyone who hasn't played this game, it is primarily a singleplayer game. The main mode is galactic conquest. In this mode you control either the Empire, Rebellion or Zann Consortium and are battling for dominance on a galactic map. Each time fleets clash on the map or a planet is invaded by ground troops you get to fight the battle in real time.
There are story campaigns for the Rebels and Imperials in the base game, and for Zann in the expansion. These are basically galactic conquest maps that feature special missions and maps, as well as some basic story in the form of voice acted conversations.
There's also a skirmish mode that features single battles either on the ground or in space. In my opinion the skirmish mode is the weakest part of the game, but there may be many who disagree with me.

Experienced RTS players will probably find this game a bit easy, especially playing as the Zann Consortium. A patient player with a few units on the ground can sometimes sneak past a max level space station and destroy armies of units on a well entrenched planet, occupying the planet and automatically destroying the space station in orbit. As the Zann Consortium, I can't tell you how many times I've just sent my five heroes to occupy planets single handedly. It's amazing how 5 people can so effectively hold an entire planet.

But even so, it's undeniable how satisfying it is when you do get those classic Star Wars battles. Dozens of Imperial Star Destroyers squaring off against Mon Calamari Cruisers over Coruscant. AT-ATs mulching inferior rebel T2 - B light tanks, only to get tripped by Airspeeders. Zann or the Rebels bringing a massive fleets only to find themselves locked in battle with a Super Star Destroyer and the Death Star. NOW WITNESS THE FULL POWER OF THIS FULLY OPERATIONAL... *ahem* You can get the idea.

And keep in mind all that I've said here is just about the base game. This game is many years old now, and there are truly incredible total conversion mods out there that are even better than the base game. You owe to yourself, whether you're a noble Rebel leader, an ironfisted Imperial general , or a cutthroat Consortium goon to try this game.

BUY IT!

An absoute masterpiece, not only a good Star Wars game but a fantastic RTS game in general.

Unique and creative ideas are present and integrated well.

If you hate the base game there is no shortage of mods to supply a wonderful time.

At regular price it's a steal, on sale it's a grand heist.

WARNING if you intend to play the forces of corruption it is extremely buggy and I could not finish the campaign without restarting it so be careful when you corrupt systems

Although nearly 10 years old Empire at War represents the FINEST in Star Wars Strategy Games. Whether you want to do a "Galaxy Conquest" mode and just play as either the Empire or Rebellion, or do a story mode learning about the empire or republic this is the game to get. It also has multiplayer support and a massive amount of mods, many of which focus on other eras of the star wars legacy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eREtAp3Yf3s

This will be what could be described as...a "mixed" review. I recommend this game for any star wars fan out there that wants an RTS fix. I can't recommend this game to rts fans. It is a very straight forward and shallow game that basically amounts to having more units than the other side. There are actual strategic elements that are brought in through community mods and add-ons, but the vanilla game is sorely lacking in this area. There is also a steep difficulty curve between the easy and medium modes. Note, I never gave the multiplayer a shot.

+community support for mods and add ons.
+Star Wars name
+mixed space and ground combat keeps things interesting
+fun to live the role of stratego for epic space battles

-lack of depth to rts elements
-once all units unlock, the end result becomes foregone
-steep difficulty curve between easy and medium. Easy mode the computer is ridiculously easy. In medium mode, the computer's aggression is turned to 10 and development of a military force is much more time consuming. It becomes a matter of consolidation of resources and base defense.
