I found the sequel to the classic Monkey Island to be an enjoyable playthrough for the quirky story, genuine laughs, loveable main characters, and, of course... the nostalgia of playing this game in my youth.
However, some of the game's puzzles and progression make absolutely zero logical sense and ultimately leave you frustrated or completely stuck until you consult a guide. It often feels as if the game was intentionally designed to be confusing (but don't worry - your hint is just a 1-900 call away on the old school Lucasarts game hint line).
Thankfully, these days we have the internet and don't have to rely on expensive phone tip lines, so I found myself looking up hints on google when I was stuck, and then realized I never ever would have figured some of the puzzles out on my own due to how obscure or downright unintuitive they are. Most of the solutions make no sense whatsoever and are random 'use X on Y combinations in Z order' or 'do X and Y and Z within a short time frame' with no foreshadowing hints or other logical normal reasoning behind them.
Surprisingly, even with these faults (which have to be forgiven somewhat since the core game itself is over 20 years old), MI2 is still a fun graphic adventure game to play through if you enjoy the Lucasarts point-and-click games of yesteryear and want a trip down memory lane with this remake that includes improved graphics, a slick UI, and pretty decent voice acting.
The story, characters, and humor will charm you and put a smile on your face. This is definitely an enjoyable game that was made with a lot of love. Just keep a guide handy for when you get stuck, as that's how the game was obviously intended to be originally played when it first came out back in 1991.
My Rating: 7.5/10
