Before Mass Effect there was Knights of the Old Republic. Bioware, in 2003, decided to introduce a decision-making system which enabled you, the player, to align yourself with either the light or the dark side. Major plot decisions could be made and your gender could also yield different options during the conversations.

This is one of the things one can like in KotOR. The two different alignments enable you to have at least two different playthroughs. But you have many side missions anyway. Even the companions can give you some.

The world where the game takes place in shows us the previously unknown history of the Star Wars universe. A world that is 4,000 years before the films are taking place. You are awaken on a ship that is being attacked by Darth Malak. Your job is to escape, find companions, regroup and annihilate your archenemy. Of course, in the process you get to learn the Jedi way!

Do note that the game is round-based. You pick the actions necessary (though this is limited each round) and you can even pause at certain points. You can also make a decision on behalf of your companions - the choice is really yours. What I have found out about the game later on is that it is based on Dungeons and Dragons rules. And the actions are calculated in accordance with these rules. As to how successfully the dice were rolled and what modifications were applied to the damages you are not told - but this is accessible from a menu.

The game has excellent music (composed by Jeremy Soule), a long-lasting experience and, well, I wanted to say good graphics, but as the game has aged in the last 10 years or so, this is not really true anymore. Still, the art design is as Star Wars-esque as it can get and this being a Bioware RPG I highly recommend it. Not just for Star Wars fans or Bioware fans but to everybody wanting to have a good time!

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic is a fantastic game. It really doesn't get better than this. The amazing Story, the fun gameplay, the likeable characters , everything seems to be perfect on this game. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone that considers himself a Star Wars fan, and loves the Old Republic era.
And after playing KOTOR, you should definitely give KOTOR 2 a try. (Sadly I doubt there would ever be a KOTOR 3)

I have heard people having issues while running this game(specially in new hardware), but I can't really say anything about that. The game played normally on my computer, with no problems.

Best Star Wars game I've ever played, hands down. Graphics obviously a bit dated nowadays and there are a few bugs here and there depending on your OS; however, don't let this stop you from playing one of the best RPGs in the last decade!

So good! I was skeptical about the gameplay when I used to watch videos of this game but it works really well.
You have 20 levels to rank up jedi powers, combat skills and feats (your starting class determines which of these 3 categories gets the most points per level up). A jedi power available is force lightning, a combat skill is something like flurry which increases your number of attacks but they deal less damage and might not hit and a feat is which type of armour you can wear or other passive benefits.
Combat is played on a turn-based dice roll system which might sound off-putting but works out well. Throughout the game you will meet characters who join you on your spaceship and you may choose 2 of them to accompany you outside of the ship. Companions will have their own stats, gear and skills so you can play around this (if you come across a companion with high lockpicking you might choose not to level your own and swap to this companion to unlock things for you). You can choose to level up your companions skills manually or automatically.
You can choose preset combat manoeuvres for yourself and companions such as ranged attacking or jedi support (buffs and heals) or you can choose to manually decide you and your parties actions by pausing the combat and assign attacks and items to a queue. You also don't have to use companions at all, you can elect to play in a solo mode where all the exp gained from enemies will go straight to your character. You also don't have to worry about this mode because companions will automatically be boosted to your level if you haven't used them.
How you play the game is up to you. I went for a dual-lightsaber character with light armour and attack bonus jedi powers but you can play as a sniper, explosives expert, jedi caster or even unarmed fighting.
The story is really what made the experience for me however. You will travel to multiple planets, gain your own starship, meet interesting characters and get to interact with almost every NPC you come across with multiple lines of dialogue and character development.
One downside to this game is that you can't play in a widescreen resolution without using mods (although guides can be found for this on the forums here on steam, along with HD mods and many others).

Thoroughly enjoyed this game. The gameplay isn't the best, though it has some sort of charm. But the storyline and the branching dialogue trees that influence the further story definitely make up for that. The story is quite original and has a few twists aswell, which is always nice. The RPG aspects of the game are okay. At first the graphics slightly turned me off (It's a older game afterall, and I'm a bit of a princess with graphics.) but got over that within 15 minutes of playtime. If you're a fan of Star Wars, pick this up. If you're not a big fan of Star Wars, but a fan of storydriven games, also definitely pick this one up.

TL;DR: Not so great gameplay, but the story definitely makes up for that! Pick it up!

I first played this game when I was ~17 and it was amazing and it still is to this day. While the graphics are obviously dated it takes nothing away from the masterpiece that this game is. If you like Star Wars or not if you like RPGs you want to play this game if you haven't.

The gameplay is based on d20 role-playing game system. You can pick your class and your skills. Force powers are yours to choose. There are different endings based on your choices as well. The characters, THE CHARACTERS. George Lucas wishes this was one of his prequel movies. The chracters in this game are fantastic. They don't need to make the story but the fact that they're good makes it an even better overall game.

MODS! There are a lot of mods out there as well. You can get different lightsabre colors, different clothes for your characters, you can change it up a lot from the original game.

Command: Play this game, meatbag.

I remember I tried to play this game a couple of years ago and just could not get into it. Taris felt boring and the combat felt stiff. I then bought this game on Steam and pushed past the Taris section and BOY am I glad I did. This game is simply amazing. Great story, fun progression, great quests and open-endedness of gameplay. Even today this game is very, very good except for some technical issues. Just save often and it won't be a problem at all. For the price, it's a steal. Buy it!

This game should appeal to anyone who has a good taste in RPG's especially those from older console generations. I personally need every game to excite me and make me want to continue playing it, ultimately that is why I always go back to those games. KOTOR is one of those games. I have played it through and through. Please, if you are a KOTOR virgin, remember to never read a guide too far ahead, or anything that would be a spoiler, you are playing possibly the most epic game story ever.

The game is great... if it plays!
Unfortunately the game always seems to crash when launching the program.
I've tried every guide and help I could find to fix it but such an old game does not like to run on newer PC's
(Windows 7).
Do not waste your money on the PC version, play it on the consoles if you still have a working copy of it.

Personal rating: 10/10
Replayability: Medium
Budget: Worth it, unless you dislike Star Wars severely.
Lenght: A few days to a week.

KOTOR is one of the best roleplaying games I've ever played. Apart from the infuriatingly ugly jedi robes in this game, this might be one of the best titles ever.

Another thing that I should point out as a serious mistake from the developers side, is that you can only have 3 active party members at a time. Instead of such a set up, I'd have preferred if encounters were just that much harder, and you'd need all 9 or however many party members it is you have.

Many party members end up just being "extras" in the story, only taken out for air when you realize it's been a while, and you need to level them up, and possibly unlock some dialogue with them.

Many other games pull the same stunt, such as Dragon Age or Mass Effect, and it's equally silly. If you have the man-power, use it!.

Apart from that, this game, being a Star Wars game, dives head first into the lore and setting for Star Wars and introduces villains and heroes that can compete with the heroes from the original trilogy. The plot of the story is, I'd say, even better than that of the original movies, and much more immersive.

Gameplay wise, the game is very similar to dragon age origins.

Any Star Wars fan should play this game. Any RPG fan should play this game and become a star wars fan.
