I helped a droid escape its sexually abusive master, prevented the tragic death of hispanic Romeo & Juliet and saved an Ithorian from being harrassed by little kids. This game makes you feel like a true jedi.

What can I say about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that hasn't already been said. It is a wonderfully made RPG set within the rich, well-loved universe of Star Wars. This game has it all for both Star Wars fans and RPG fans.

Get it, play it, love it.
Play the sequel. love it.
Play SWTOR and get angry.

Before Mass Effect there was Knights of the Old Republic. Bioware, in 2003, decided to introduce a decision-making system which enabled you, the player, to align yourself with either the light or the dark side. Major plot decisions could be made and your gender could also yield different options during the conversations.

This is one of the things one can like in KotOR. The two different alignments enable you to have at least two different playthroughs. But you have many side missions anyway. Even the companions can give you some.

The world where the game takes place in shows us the previously unknown history of the Star Wars universe. A world that is 4,000 years before the films are taking place. You are awaken on a ship that is being attacked by Darth Malak. Your job is to escape, find companions, regroup and annihilate your archenemy. Of course, in the process you get to learn the Jedi way!

Do note that the game is round-based. You pick the actions necessary (though this is limited each round) and you can even pause at certain points. You can also make a decision on behalf of your companions - the choice is really yours. What I have found out about the game later on is that it is based on Dungeons and Dragons rules. And the actions are calculated in accordance with these rules. As to how successfully the dice were rolled and what modifications were applied to the damages you are not told - but this is accessible from a menu.

The game has excellent music (composed by Jeremy Soule), a long-lasting experience and, well, I wanted to say good graphics, but as the game has aged in the last 10 years or so, this is not really true anymore. Still, the art design is as Star Wars-esque as it can get and this being a Bioware RPG I highly recommend it. Not just for Star Wars fans or Bioware fans but to everybody wanting to have a good time!

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic is a fantastic game. It really doesn't get better than this. The amazing Story, the fun gameplay, the likeable characters , everything seems to be perfect on this game. I'd definitely recommend this game to anyone that considers himself a Star Wars fan, and loves the Old Republic era.
And after playing KOTOR, you should definitely give KOTOR 2 a try. (Sadly I doubt there would ever be a KOTOR 3)

I have heard people having issues while running this game(specially in new hardware), but I can't really say anything about that. The game played normally on my computer, with no problems.

So good! I was skeptical about the gameplay when I used to watch videos of this game but it works really well.
You have 20 levels to rank up jedi powers, combat skills and feats (your starting class determines which of these 3 categories gets the most points per level up). A jedi power available is force lightning, a combat skill is something like flurry which increases your number of attacks but they deal less damage and might not hit and a feat is which type of armour you can wear or other passive benefits.
Combat is played on a turn-based dice roll system which might sound off-putting but works out well. Throughout the game you will meet characters who join you on your spaceship and you may choose 2 of them to accompany you outside of the ship. Companions will have their own stats, gear and skills so you can play around this (if you come across a companion with high lockpicking you might choose not to level your own and swap to this companion to unlock things for you). You can choose to level up your companions skills manually or automatically.
You can choose preset combat manoeuvres for yourself and companions such as ranged attacking or jedi support (buffs and heals) or you can choose to manually decide you and your parties actions by pausing the combat and assign attacks and items to a queue. You also don't have to use companions at all, you can elect to play in a solo mode where all the exp gained from enemies will go straight to your character. You also don't have to worry about this mode because companions will automatically be boosted to your level if you haven't used them.
How you play the game is up to you. I went for a dual-lightsaber character with light armour and attack bonus jedi powers but you can play as a sniper, explosives expert, jedi caster or even unarmed fighting.
The story is really what made the experience for me however. You will travel to multiple planets, gain your own starship, meet interesting characters and get to interact with almost every NPC you come across with multiple lines of dialogue and character development.
One downside to this game is that you can't play in a widescreen resolution without using mods (although guides can be found for this on the forums here on steam, along with HD mods and many others).

I re-purchased this on Steam to show further support. This game, and it's sequal, are two of the best RPGs ever made. If you have any interest in Star Wars or in Role Playing Games at all, please buy this. It's almost incomparably good.

Best Star Wars game I've ever played, hands down. Graphics obviously a bit dated nowadays and there are a few bugs here and there depending on your OS; however, don't let this stop you from playing one of the best RPGs in the last decade!

Whether you are into the Star Wars universe or not, KotOR is one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever made.

[+]
There is so much to love about KotOR that it is hard to decide what to begin with. Everything feels fleshy and alive. NPCs interactions are outstanding and those between the members of your party give this game even more "thickness". The levels are very well designed and diverse: deserts, cities, ruins, spaceships, underwater stations, ... not two places are the same, barring enemy bases. And with a tool like Flawless Widescreen to make the game 1080p, they take a new dimension. The plot is great, with a few twists and important choices. Combat, despite being turn-based with behind-the-scenes dice rolls, is excellent too. And then there is the pazaak minigame and swoop races if you need cash or a break from the main plot! Even a decade after its release, Knights of the Old Republic does not feel outdated at all and truly deserves its place as a classic.

[-]
No game is perfect and KotOR is no exception: The camera movements are a little weird at times, the difficulty is uneven, there is a lot of unnecessary walking, and the poor inventory system makes it hard to find items as the list gets longer. I had a few crashes, especially with the movies that I had to remove entirely to prevent CTDs.

Ok let me just start off by saying best thing since the movies. I didn't think it would be any good or that much fun but let me tell you it is most certainly worth buying. It has a good story good charecters the combat is just ok and also has a great plot twist. Also the light and dark choices and options were so distinct. Bottom line best thing bioware made next to mass effect so get it now! However if you didn't like the star wars movies you might not like this.....

By far one of the best RPG games i have played. At first the battle style was very different from what i am used to, but as I progressed farther into the game and i understood it more and the story became more developed I started to really like the battle system. It can either be a faster paced or step by step battle. Also, this game has one of the best storylines i have ever played and the interactive part and choosing light or dark side really made this game what it is. If you are considering buying this game, don't hesitate, just do it.

One of the best games I've ever played. Seriously.
Skip to the bottom if you want a TL;DR.
According to Steam I've only played 23 hours' worth – that's not true. I've always had weird problems with the whole connection with Steam – one day it'll say I've played 31 hours, the next it'll say I've only played 7. I am pretty sure I've logged over 40 hours of gameplay on this.
Not much, when you compare it to other people's times. But I'm not a hardcore gamer. I game when I have some spare time.
This game is seriously good.
Sure, the combat is a bit odd and clunky, especially if you're used to modern games or if you don't role-play, but give it a bit and it'll feel natural. I actually prefer it.
The story is gripping, the characters well-developed.
It really does it's job in inserting you into the Star Wars universe, and story wise I have no complaints.
One complaint I do have is the length of time you spend running around. It's at least seventy percent of the game. And for some reason it just feels like a real drag.
TL;DR?
Excellent game, story is brilliant, role-play-style combat system, too much running around.

Do not buy this game on steam. Gog.com has a version that is made completely playable on windows 7.

It's near impossible to play this game on steam. Some people may not have much trouble starting it but a majority are not able to get this game to run without spending hours online using different fixes. The first time two years ago after an hour of trying fixes the game finally ran after the character selection screen. I was about two minutes into the game but could not figure out how to move forward. Turns out it was bugged. Tried a few more fixes and managed to get the the next section of the starting mission and guess what happened? I was stuck and couldn't figure out where to go and it turns out the game was bugged again. After another two hours I could not get the game at any more playable of a state. One year later I give it another shot and this time I can't even get the game to load after creating a character. Close to four hours of work and I manged to play five minutes of the game.

Gog just released their version of KotOR and it works perfectly from the moment I downloaded it. The game is $9.99 and may never go on sale but it's woth every cent. Gog strives to make games playable. Steam is just a portal for selling games and there are many on here that are in as bad a shape as Kotor becaause the original publisher never updates them for new systems.

This is a great classic star wars game.

There are 3 different classes with different skills and abilities.
You better google search for more details on that, might be a little too complex for this review.

For example, in certain situations, depending on your abilities, you might be able to intimidate or pursuade people, repair or hack some machinery to help you out, unlock certain doors and containers.

There are blasters, melee weapons (swords and lightsabers) and different grenades to use in combat.
Aside from that, there is also a variety of force powers you can use, though you have to unlock those abilities with skill points first.

Combat is turn based and pausable, so you can plan out fights pretty well.
You can switch between your main character and his companions (if you have any) and control their actions in battle - Or you just let the game do it for you.

Companions level up as well, and you can upgrade their skills accordingly.

Might wanna check some gameplay on youtube if you wanna see what it's exactly like.

A lot of times in the game you have to make decisions, which either give you light side or dark side points. This also has an impact on how people react.
(Just a heads up: Being a good guy is way more tiresome and expensive. Just kill everyone.)

The game runs perfectly for me on Windows 8.1 Professional 64 bit, the only little annoying bug I had fixed itself when turning on V-Sync, though I can't guarantee. Some people have reported problems. You should check out the community hub for that.

Any more questions? Feel free to leave a comment.
