THOUGHTS:

The soundtrack for this game is awesome and the fact that Valve gives it away for free for everybody that bought the actual game is also awesome.

Portal's Soundtrack is very much like the game, short and probably the lesser soundtrack if compared to example Half-Life 2 or Portal 2. The game itself does not take more than a few hours to complete and if it weren't for the well known "Still Alive" song, there wouldn't be much to talk about. Yeah all the tracks are very much contributing to the atmosphere of the Aparture Science facility, just like with all Valve's soundtracks. They mostly consist of ambient sounds, again - very Valve like.

"Still Alive", composed by Jonathan Coulton, is such a nice song and it is so perfect at the end too, it just would not have been suited during the actual game. The song itself is a perfect reflection of GLaDOS's playful, but sinister mind, and it does surprisingly a lot for this game even in the credits. The "Black Mesa" tie-in, the fact that GLaDOS is "still alive" and sincere even though you killed her. Until this point you didn't feel much else than hatred towards this twisted AI, but now. Now you can put your differences behind you. For science. You monster.

Composer: Kelly Bailey, Jonathan Coulton.

Specs for Portal Soundtrack:

* Format: MP3
* Soundtrack length: 43m 55s
* Total size: 100 MB (including album art)
* 44100 Hz sample rate
* 320 kpbs bitrate
* Stereo

Steam downloads game soundtracks to a separate folder in your game's Steamapps directory. You can right-click on a game in your Steam Library, select Properties>Local Files and click Browse Local Files to access that game's directory.

There's not as much music here as in Portal 2, and it's mostly sinister ambient stuff, but I myself really like it. Of course, there is also the masterpiece that is Still Alive. I don't care how popular it is, it's still good. You can download the in-game radio music from here.

Personally, I'm very glad Valve decided to release the music for the Half-Life and Portal games for free with any purchases of the games themselves.

There isn't as much music on Portal's OST than Portal 2 however that one song (you know which one) make up for the lack of content.

The lyrics as they are displayed in the credits:

Test Assessment Report

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here:
HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate
my satisfaction.
Aperture Science
We do what we must
because we can.
For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying
over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are
still alive.

Forms FORM-55551-5:
Personnel File Addendum:

Dear <<Subject Name Here>>,

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart.
And killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!
Now these points of data
make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta.
We're releasing on time.
So I'm GLaD. I got burned.
Think of all the things we learned
for the people who are
still alive.

Forms FORM-55551-6:
Personnel File Addendum Addendum:

One last thing:

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else
to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa...
THAT WAS A JOKE. HA HA. FAT CHANCE.
Anyway, this cake is great.
It's so delicious and moist.
Look at me still talking
when there's Science to do.
When I look out there,
it makes me GLaD I'm not you.
I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
On the people who are
still alive.

PS:
And believe me I am
still alive.
PPS:
I'm doing Science and I'm
still alive.
PPPS:
I feel FANTASTIC and I'm
still alive.

FINAL THOUGHT:
While you're dying I'll be
still alive.

FINAL THOUGHT PS:
And when you're dead I will be
still alive.

STILL ALIVE

Still alive.

Notes (from Portal wiki):
  • Still Alive - GLaDOS revealed to be alive at the end of the game.
  • And you make a neat gun - The Handheld Portal Device.
  • Even though you broke my heart and killed me - Chell presumably killing GLaDOS.

Somehow I prefer the soft and slightly sinister ambience of Portal OST to heavily electro Portal 2 OST. Both soundtracks fullfill their roles though. It's more fo a personal preference.
Without music there wouldn't be atmosphere of being abandoned, of loneliness in white corridors, no sense of being reliant only on self. Those delicate sounds might be ignored during gameplay but they hit straight in the core, wrap around you and without those whispers there would be only silence, cut with occasional shrieks of empty space in abandoned facility.
Ekhm.
This is a very good OST. Excellent.
