This is a review for the Half-Life 2: Episode One soundtrack as tracks to listen to outside of a gaming session.

Half-Life 2's music is predominantly ambient tracks or electronic/mechanical sounding music. The music serves very well as background to the game itself, in that it merges with your surroundings, and doesn't stand out at all. Unfortunately, this results in much of the music not being particularly memorable, thereby not linking to the emotional feel of the game when listening to the tracks outside the game. Episode One's music is a little more active/electronic than the original game's, and as such I found it slightly more enjoyable, but ultimately, it's just not the sort of music that I would normally listen to outside of a gaming session.

Absolutely worth having for the price, and it's a perfectly serviceable album if you particularly enjoy ambient music, but for most people, I suspect that they would not be interested in listening to the tracks outside of the game.
