What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We simply want to make sure players like where the game is heading. We have developed projects both behind closed doors and opened up development to players before, and in open development we can make an update, publish it, and see what people enjoy about it and what they don't. We can take that knowledge and use it in the next update.

A large part of game development is solving a series of smaller problems under the hood. Early Access is our way of making sure we don't lose sight of the big picture in the middle of it all.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to move out of Early Access and release the full version in 2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have more quests and locations. While the gameplay systems will be expanded and polished.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The main adventure is 80% complete and features lots of characters and creatures, quests, melee & ranged combat, mask & faction system, items, inventory system and 4 procedurally generated continents.

We also have full modding capabilities built right into the game. We expose the same tools for modding that we use for development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. What we ask in Early Access is considerably less than what you would expect to pay for a full game. We want the price to reflect the completeness of the game, and this means you should get the game for less if you get on board early on. We feel this is also fair to the early adopters should the game, for some reason, not receive the support needed to be completed. As we update the game with more features and polish things more, we will gradually increase the price to reflect its state.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We go through all feedback that we can find, be it on forums, YouTube, or email, and look for what people like or don't like about each update. We then use what we find to help direct the development of the next update and repeat until the we have a game that both we and the players are more or less unanimous about.”

Hardland Release 20 is available now!

RELEASE 20 SALUTES YOU!

FEATURES
  • Up to 40% faster generation time thanks to multi-threading via OpenMP.

    ALL TEXTURES RECOMPRESSED
Everything looks nicer and actually uses less memory. The effect is most apparent on normal maps. Especially on metal surfaces as demonstrated here:

Smooth surfaces like skin also look better:

That would be 2148 textures in total which have received an upgrade.
We're using an awesome lib called Crunch to do the texture compression.

  • More robust animation blending system.
  • First strike on an unexpecting character will stagger them giving the player an advantage in combat.

  • Unique staggering animations for:
    - Ghouls
    - Merchants
    - Elder Guardians

  • Unique walking and shooting animations for Rotten Merchant.
  • Reliable water traversal effects for player and NPC's.
  • Slower heavy weapon strike for player.
  • Added spears to the random generator.
  • Ice sliding gameplay:

  • Moon in the sky during night. (it would be nice if it followed a circular trajectory)

  • Low and medium settings performance should be much better.
  • Fixed a bug where seeing a large number particles at once
    would always crash the game.
  • Fixed a bug where large chunks of terrain were
    sometimes missing.
  • Fixed some sound bugs.
  • Secret landmark...

ABOUT SHADOW MAPS
Even though Hardland model normals are quite precise there's other kinds of visual artifacts which can and will happen. One of them is this precision issue with shadow maps:
http://i.imgur.com/KeRf6NG.gif

It happens because the shadows start casting too near to the surface.
The opposite of shadow acne is peter panning where shadows start casting too far away from the surface.

Here's a demonstration:

Just remember that good depth bias settings are between Peter and Acne :)

Timo

This title is still waaaaay back from being close to completion. It only looks good graphically (if your machine can sustain it!), but as far as gameplay and mechanics go, it still feels very much like a skeleton of what it should be. There is no intro or apparent purpose which is given to you as soon as the game starts; enemy difficulty half a minute into the game is quite steep; dialogues are as generic as they come and seem to make zero sense; NPC personalities are far from being fleshed out; puzzles? strategy? quests? How do you play this game? what are you supposed to do? This game has been so long on Early Access but yet I have no idea what this game is supposed to be.

If the core of the gameplay is in action, the game is very unbalanced and not user friendly early on; the game does stuff like throwing a band of mini goblins, a boar (tough to kill at starting level) and a fire hurling knight which will totally demolished you in 4 hits. Your character will explode in loot you didn't even knew you had, because (you guessed it) you just started playing a few seconds ago...

My suggestion to the devs: it's best to set down the gameplay and fix the little content to a good point, than making something too ambitious and ending with a lot of loose ends. The game may promise well, but it needs a direction and a sense of progression, most of all, to be enjoyable rather than frustrating.

This game can be really nice if/once its fully done but as of now and how the gameplay is, i cannot recommend the game. You simple start off near a house not knowing nothing/remembering anything. As you explore and find monsters to slay and die you will slowly learn on what to do. But during the time of the gameplay it just lacks content in this huge world.

Pros
Graphics
Quests are simple
entering homes
Interact with NPC'S
Open World
Stamina, Hunger, Armour and Health Bars
animation

Cons
world is empty
Areas you're not suppose to be in has no purpose.

I haven't played this game in quite a while, but it certainly seems to have come a long way. When I had first purchased it, I could not even start the game properly. I contacted one of the developers for help and they responded almost immediately. Not only were they friendly, but they worked long and hard to correct the elusive problem that I kept having. After a week of correspondence back and forth, they had fixed my issue and I was off on my way into the world of Hardland.
Graphics 9.5/10
The first thing that struck me in this game was the absolute beauty of it. Everything seems handcrafted and personalized to the point that the graphics look like no other game that I've ever seen. It could not be better in appearances.
Gameplay 8.5/10
This game is certainly unique in fighting style. I have never been able to have so much fun with a few bales of hay and some barrels. The merchant that I threw them at could not say the same. He died...eventually, leaving me his awesome blunderbuss (OP btw). But this is when I noticed the first fault in this game. There was no consequences for my actions. Also this game NEEDS more of an open world because when I hear open world, I want open world, not just partly open landscapes. NPCs need more emotion and variation put into them to make it feel like a better story. Quests are fun, but slowly become somewhat grating. Quests need to be exciting and action packed with boss fights. Monsters to fight are certainly fun but I think that there should be way more to fight as well. Nothing is more fun than running aimlessly at night with an explosive crossbow shooting everything in sight, but I want to be able to shoot more than 3-4 kinds of monsters in a run.
Sound 7/10
The music that is there is good, but it is repetitive. There needs to be more sound tracks to play so that my ears don't start hurting after a long time playing. I like the style of music, but like I said, just add more.
Overall 8/10
This game is pretty good, but I stopped playing it because I wanted to wait for more updates. These are coming. I have only ONE MAJOR SUGGESTION: add multiplayer. I don't know how you would do it, I don't know if you can do it, but I know that if there is a god named Mountain Sheep, that anything is possible. If multiplayer is added, I will not hesitate to force everyone...EVERYONE that I know (yes I mean everyone) to buy this game (Not really but I would show them it XD). I only want to be able to throw my friends at every...I mean throw everything in sight at my friends...I mean throw stuff with my friends at other stuff. Make my dream come true and BUY MY CHOCOLATE. Let's make America great again!

Honestly I expected way too much, I don't know what to do or where to go. There's basically no intro or a story line. Yeah the graphics is cool, but I'm not gonna pay for a game just for graphics, otherwise I just might aswell buy a movie.Though I will say that this game has the potential to be amazing. But it feels like the developers were just lazy. So until the game gets better, I don`t recommend it it.

Don't let me down MountainSheep! This game could do to me what has not been done for a long time.

Pros:

Better collision detection than most any games I've ever played. Better than "AAA" titles
Beautiful artstyle.
Combat is pretty darn nice, makes think about how you are going to fight each battle. As in its not a cake walk.
Quests are simple, and they don't overwhelm you.
RUNS SOOOO SMOOTH!!! LIKE BUTTER!!!!

Cons:

Not enough content yet(early access) to be expected.
That this game hasn't been in my life sooner.
Few bugs, no biggy.

Overall its worth every penny, and needs all the support it can get.

Phenomenal game so far. Its like playing a dream works or pixar movie. This game has some MAJOR story telling potential. I get a Zelda vibe from it mixed with Fable, only 100% open world, destructible environments and its own unique style. I purposely play for a bit, stop for a week, then come back and check out the amazing things that have been added. If you like supporting indie companies and want a fun alpha in return, then this is your game. I dont see why this game, fully done, with a Disney quality story, couldnt be game of the year, obviously far off from this current state, but it has that much potential in my opinion.

Hardland is a gorgeous looking ARPG in early access. The first thing that'll grab a lot of people's attention would probably be it's aesthetics. It's design being inspired by claymation the world and it's characters does have a pretty cartoony "doughiness" to it. At times the game feels almost like playing an interactive Pixar Movie.

Hardland as an ARPG is pretty simple overall. Go around a vast world, where the town areas are hand designed while the dungeons and wilderness are randomly generated. Kill some mobs, level up, find loot, explore, and maybe pick up a side quest or 2 along the way. There's no main quest that I've found so the game is very open to however the player decides to play it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHXJ7h9ytMw
Hardland does a lot of stuff right. The graphics are impressive, it's well optimized and stable, it features an open sandbox for the player to explore with RNG elements keeping things fresh. These are all enjoyable factors of the game, but Hardland also does a lot of stuff wrong as well. With out a main quest and the side quest being mostly of the fetch variety, the game lacks a sense of direction. At first most players will be wandering around wondering what they're supposed to be doing before realizing, wandering around is what they're supposed to be doing. The game also lacks interest points. It's great that Hardland gives the player a vast and open world to explore, but I haven't found much interesting things to find. Sure there are some chests, and some side quest (again mostly fetch quests) laying around, but nothing that truly grabbed my attention. In such a vast and gorgeous looking world, it's a shame that I have to report on it's at times, empty feeling. The game also features fairly primitive mechanics. The leveling up system is basic, the equipment system is basic, even the combat feels basic. The game also suffers from a few quality of life issues. There is only 1 save slot, and all the items you collect are ordered by alphabetical. There is no equipment tab, food tab, or any sense of organization at all.

So I've mentioned a laundry list of things I took issues with, but I'm still feeling pretty positive about Hardland. I think the game has a ton of potential, and hope to see the game grow and add content as it continues forward. I think if the devs can overhaul the combat, and fill the world with more interesting discoveries, it's open world idea could very well be something special. It already has a gorgeous art design as a strong foundation, it just needs to be built upon at this point.

Overall Hardland is an ARPG that is bursting at the seams with potential. That potential just needs to be realized.

Pros:
- Impressive visuals
- Vast and gorgeous world to explore
- Open world sandbox approach

Cons:
- Lacks a sense of direction
- Lacks interest points
- Mechanics are very primitive
