This game is ancient by hidden object game standards, but if someone can appreciate the dated mechanics, obsolete items placement, and low-res graphics, they can find a surprisingly good title under all the virtual dust.

Long version:
Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allen Poe Conspiracy was released in mid-2009, just before hidden object games switched to the modern lightweight adventure game format. The result is an old-school game of hidden object scenes, but one with a hefty amount of plot going with it.

Said plot is about the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe contacting a struggling writer to unravel the mysteries of his murder, which coincidentally requires the solving of two other ancient crimes, both based on a short story by Poe himself: ‘The Mystery of Marie Rogêt’ and ‘The Gold-Bug’. (Both were significantly altered for the sake of gameplay, naturally.)
Storytelling is quite simplistic– cut-out characters and text balloons– but its fits Poe: it is dark, mysterious, and engaging. I imagine many would expect a lot more in terms of gameplay nowadays, but this story is still good enough to make this old HOG enjoyable for today’s audience.

A game where Edgar Allan Poe's weird ghost contacts you to help him solve a murder conspiracy. You solve it by clicking on things. It's a pretty nice way to pass a couple hours if you like hidden object games.

This game dragged for me; it is almost entirely hidden object, with few puzzles. The puzzles it does have are very easy, and feel jarring when compared to the random things the game wants you to do (ie, use the objects you pick up in some manner, which is not always apparent) and the difficulty of some of the hidden objects. In one hidden object search, an item was so buried that i still could not see it even after i had the raven point it out. O.o

I hear that the later games in the series are much improved, so i might check those out. But overall, i would have preferred less frustrating hidden objects and more difficult puzzles.

A pure hidden-object game with fake point-and-click adventuring and no real puzzles.

Hardcore fans of hidden-object games might enjoy the many and difficult hidden-object scenes, but the "story," if you can call it that, is a pathetic attempt to make use of Poe's name. If you are a fan of Poe you might enjoy the many references to his stories. But you probably won't: they are not woven together with any coherence and are only skin deep.

Good search adventure. Works with touch screen, but sometimes using "tools" is best left to touch pad or mouse.
