About This Game

Battle demons and undead attorneys, and win souls to pay back your student loans! At the elite demonic-law firm of Varkath Nebuchadnezzar Stone, you'll depose a fallen god, find romance, and maybe even make partner, if you don't lose your own soul first.

"Choice of the Deathless" is a necromantic legal thriller by Max Gladstone, Campbell Award-nominated author of Three Parts Dead and Two Serpents Rise. The game is entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

  • Explore a fantasy realm with a rich and evolving backstory, based on the novels published by Tor Books.
  • Play as male or female, gay or straight, dead or alive (or both).
  • Build your career on carefully reasoned contracts, or party all night with the skeletal partners at your firm.
  • Navigate intrigue and mystery in a world of scheming magicians and devious monsters.
  • Look for love in at least some of the right places.
  • Balance student loans, sleep, daily commute, rent payments, and demonic litigation—hey, nobody said being a wizard was always fun.

I just finished the free first part of the game. Yes, if you want to play the rest you have to pay, it's just 2,99$ so it's not that much.
My first impression is, well, it is definitly ( sorry if I spelt that wrong..) not what I expected. It's more reading a novel but you actually play a part in the story. Which I do find really amusing. It's well written and the story so far is interesting.
I would not really call this a game, but I can defenitly see why one would 'play' this. I remember reading novels and never having the chance to actually be a part in the story, never being able to make it different. I really like that. Because now I actually CAN change. Of course, I can see why not everyone would be fond of a game like this. If you're more of an action type gamer, then yes, this is not for you.

So what did I like about Choice of the Deathless?:
- very well written
- interesting story so far
- nice given choices
- you can see your own statistics and achievements you earned in-game

But, yes there is always a But, I think this game would even be better with some illustrations and ambiance. I don't know why but I kind of miss it. Even though i played some fantasy music from Future World Music and such in the background, just for the ambiance.

But overall, I liked it. So yup, I recommend this sort-of game. :)

~Kind wishes

I enjoyed this demo very much and intend to purchase the full version.

Very well written, rather like an R.L. Stein choose your own scare book.

As far as I text based game goes, I like it because its details are clear and simple. I enjoy text based games only when the creators really dive into the games world and develope a real sense for te day to day in game.

I typically like these sort of story-intesive projects, but the story just moves too slowly for me. The world they're trying to build should be so complicated and interesting but insead it never really gives you a chance to sit down and figure out how the world they've set up actually works. It's too vague.

What do firm's do? What's a cast? What species are you even? What were the God wars about? How does "soul value" work? These are all fascinating concepts but you're never given a chance to really understand them. I understand it's just a demo, but I need to know some context for the story your flinging me into if I'm going to enjoy it. The concept is fantastic but the pacing is slow as molasses mostly because the 90% of the decisions you make impact nothing within the confines of the demo. The world building teases things but is otherwise completely unhelpful if your trying to figure out what's going on. If I can't get an idea of the world I'm in, I can't imerse myself in the story. That's really important for a game like this. Maybe it would all make sense if I was familiar with the series, but I'm not.

The story seems well done, but it is the story itself - the only part of the game - that is bad. Too much "refrences" to complicated stuff I do not understand, such as the Town names and gods. Toooooo much false gods.

Doesn't really make me excited for the future of authors making text adventures. These kinds of games need to be more than choose-your-own-adventure stories. This sort of extreme bare-bones style isn't made more interesting by the fact that you no longer have to flip through constantly to get to each choice.

This game is a really cool game, the demo lasts for like 15 minutes if you read everything but I highly recommend it if you plan to play something to past the time

The game is about making the choices regrads to your future. What I understand you must pay off your student debt before you lose your soul. I played the demo and must I say I did enjoy playing it. If you enjoy reading then this game is for you. I do intend to buy the full version of the game.
