Xbox Controller Reinstated. (And other notes)

Just a little announcement to say that the Xbox controller is back. I'm still working on maybe a little fix for the analog stick being more responsive. (I've tested it though and it seemed fine to me.) To select the option, go to options and change the input method.

I'm now trying to fix little bugs like the screen overlay not working without directx8/9. So expect a patch of that soon. I'm also going to tweak some stages so they're easy with the gamepad as well as keyboard controls. After I've got some of these issues ironed out I'll be working on getting some trading cards into the mix!

(Oh and here is a picture of the upcoming Game Boy version of the game)

Patch + Updates.

So just some patch notes and updates for people.

Patch Notes:

  • First, I've edited so the game doesn't use directx9, however there is a version of the game that uses it included in the Steamapps folder of this game. This should hopefully clear any bugs/issues with full-screen.
  • I've taken out support for controllers. With so many complains of it not working, it was doing more bad than good so I've got rid of it. As the game was designed originally as a flash game, controller support is difficult to include. I've taken it out for now, but I might work on it with more time and include a patch to re-instate it once it's more finished.
  • The game now can save offline and doesn't need the use of Steam being online.
  • The game also now saves your option selections. I've also added in more options for keys
  • There is now a bonus game in the Steamapp folder of this game, called Alien Splatter that I made for flash a while back. This is to say sorry for the rocky start of the game.

Also after the "Game Boy" and "lab" update I'm most likely not going to add in extra content as promised due to the amount of people disapproving the game. I rather spend my time on working on other projects than a game that people are not too bothered about.
Seems people still want some extra content which is nice to know so I'll still be adding some little extras as time go past. Although I rather concentrate on getting the Xbox Controller stuff fixed and added back in first.

Other than that, I hope everything is having a cool day and hopefully this patch will fix some issues. I'm still looking into some details of the game but they'll be updated through out the week.

Dust off that ol' Nintendo be--wait what? You don't have it anymore? It stopped working? Well no worries! This game feels like it was digitally imported straight from the good ol' days of gaming!

Rush N' Attack styled gameplay with Contra styled weapons packed with all the classic 8bit sounds/music you can enjoy!

The City is under attack!
It is challenging! You can't fly and shoot at the same time, but additional weapons allow for further range/area of destruction as you run and gun down the cityscape!

This is everything an action shooter NES game wanted to be (except without multiplayer, but that other guy would just slow ya down anyway wouldn't they?)

PROs
--Nostalgic
--Action packed
--8Bit wonderful
--Challenging
--Jet Packs!
--Explosions!
--Hardcore mode for harder challenge
--Challenging challenges for more challenge!

CONs
--Didn't come out soon enough!

It's a fun, fast paced and challenging game that's like a mix of Megaman and Contra on crack! It has lots of enemies that respawn if you backtrack, lots of powerups which can significantly alter the behaviour of your weapon and you even come equipped with a jetpack. Powerups are also randomized so you can't beat the game strictly by trial and error making skill and reflexes key. The presentation is absolutely spot on right down to the segmented health/energy bars and achieves the retro 8-bit style perfectly -- it looks, sounds and plays just like an NES game. The sprites are large and easy to distinguish and they explode into colorful 8-bit pieces!

My only issue with the game is that the controls aren't as tight as I would like them to be. Sometimes when I try to move in the opposite direction it doesn't register particulary if I do it too quickly. Furthermore you can't remap the controls and the only controller it supports is the 360 gamepad, and it's not very playable with it because the controls are significantly delayed however the developer is working on fixing it. The options currently don't save either and be warned: This game is ***VERY LOUD*** when you first load it up.

But all in all, it's a great game that does what it sets out to do very well. It took me an hour just to beat the first stage and there's 6 in total. So make no mistake it is hard, especially unforgiving in hardcore mode. If that's what you're looking for, then for the price you really can't wrong with this.

The person that made this doens't fully understand how to make a run-'n'-gun style of game but does seem to understand the components that WOULD make a good one. Honestly, it makes for a rather dull experience overall. Let's start from the beginning so we can get an idea of what's wrong with it:

1) Enemy placement - Enemies are often placed in areas that aren't well thought out (or perhaps they are, but for the wrong reasons). You'll find yourself tapping the controller or keyboard to move forward rather than have your character move at a constant rate for fear of an enemy popping up on the very edge of the screen and immediately firing. While this isn't terrible if you are into that sort of thing, I like to play my run-'n'-gun style of games where I'm actually RUNNING and GUNNING, not stutter stepping and jumping.

2) Weapons - Good lord are the things generally useless. A bullet spray that shoots in a random barrage of bullets? Why not just make it the ever classic spread from Contra? In this, the bullets might miss smaller targets generally, and require me to maneuver in bizarre fashions to maximize the damage from an enemy.

A misslie launcher? Sounds amazing, except it's not because the missiles generally have this nasty tendency to fly upwards after a few moments of being shot so they always seem to skirt *around* the enemies rather than at them! If that wasn't bad enough, the missiles are incredibly slow as well. Lame.

Boomerangs? Okay, these actually aren't that bad, but it WOULD be better if you could switch between them and your standard gun.

I could go on and on about them, but let's just say that most of them are a noticeable downgrade from your standard shot. This is absolutely not good at all. Sure, you can have weapons that are better at moments, but having them be worst in almost any conceivable situation is absolutely unacceptable.

I especially love how the drops are random, so until you actually remember the symbols for your power-ups, you'll never actually be able to know which ones are actually useful or not (just skip most of them). Even worse is that some of them are a "partner" powerup, so there's no reason to not have those guys even if they have limited ammo and most aren't particularly helpful.

The Jet idea is pretty nifty but I feel like it's not utilized very well. Let's take the first mini-boss for instance, using your jet dodges every single attack it has, and even in hardcore mode, by the time it's actually ready to charge its next attack, your jet meter has already filled back up to the top again and can be used to dodge. I'm not saying remove the jet, but the enemies should have more attacks since the game knows that you will ALWAYS have the jetpack.

Lastly, I absolutely hate how the vast majority of the enemies are over your character's head but you cannot shoot up. That's not how you design something. Yes, I get that the jet pack is there to let you level out with the enemies, but it's excessive from as early as state 1, area 1-1. The helicopters should most definitely have a method of being shot at if you run underneath them outside of running backwards to shoot it (which causes enemies behind you to respawn), or running passed it; this makes it even more pointless to fight as it's no longer an obstacle.

All and all, it's not the most wretched game I've played-- it's not even really bad, it's just... Not good. In any real way.

Why was my review so long? I don't know, maybe it's a message to the developer so he can make a better game. I feel like if he made "Jet Gunner 2" and got rid of the above problems, the game might be pretty good.

Jet Gunner feels modeled off of screenshots of Contra and Megaman by someone that has never played or understood what made those games classic. The same mechanics are all here, but they're clunky and unrefined; lacking polish and inspiration as if designed to intentionally bore the player, perhaps in the hopes that they quit playing before happening upon the later stages in the game which feature cheap deaths and frustrating gimmicks in place of creative level designs and solid combat.

Jet Gunner isn't abhorrently bad, but its abundance of poor design decisions, stiff controls, and underwhelming boss fights leave it floundering in an abyss of its far better contemporaries (not to mention the games which so obviously inspired it). It's full of the sort of almost decent monotony that makes it easy to switch off your mind and dully playthrough, but never once did I come upon a reason why I was wasting my time with such an underwhelming game.

If you like Retro games like Contra, Megaman and Metroid this game is for you! The game, consists of you running and killing enemies. You collect power ups along the way, and you can get a sidekick to fight aong side you. Some power ups arre good some not so much, you'll learn which ones are good and which ones to avoid. You also get a Jetpack, which you can you to fly. Tho it, has an energy bar which refills when you are not using it. Each level, has I think 5 parts to them, not sure. There are mini bosses, and at the end of each level a Boss fight. Storyline is well what you'd expect, kill the bad guys! There is two levels of difficulty, normal and hardcore. Normal is the standard game play, harcore you take more damage, jet pack runs out fast, no health packs and bosses have more hp. There is also a challenge mode which I havent really played yet. All in all the game is a nice throwback to NES days. Also the game is cheap, so buy it!

Jet Gunner is a great game. It's in the vein of the old run and gun games of yesteryear but the addition of the jetpack adds a new twist. The mechanics behind the way the jetpack refuels means you can't just "cheese" a level, you actually have to be precise and not waste fuel while in the air. The level design puts your platforming skills to the test while making sure you are blasting everything in sight. While some of the guns in the game seem strange at first, once you get to know how to use them effectivly you become a machine of robotic death. When you buy this game make sure you have an Xbox 360 controller plugged in and are ready for the ride of your life!!

I GOT THIS GAME FREE ON WGN,THIS REVIEW MAY NOT BE THE SAME THING IF YOU'RE GONNA BUY THE GAME

If you like retro games like Contra this review is for you.
To begin i really like retro games, this game was perfect to remember Contra from NES,this is a Rush N' Attack game and the mechanic of Contra weapons,i just played a few minutes and it was really fun.
This game has a variety of scenarios with moving platforms, buildings that fall when you step on them and some parts that you need to use the jetpack.
The game have some issues to solve as any game have, but they aren't a real problem,it really worth your money if you like retro games with 8bit music

BUY A XBOX CONTROLLER TO GET A FULL EXPERIENCE OF THE GAME

This is a very challenging game.

The first key to beating this game is one word: PATIENCE. If you try and run-and-gun you will most likely fail because most of the enemies are capable of shooting you as soon as they notice you. Also, there are areas which require precise timing to avoid getting hit.

The second key is to know your weapons. Each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses. You need to know which weapons to get and to avoid for each section of the level. This is especially important because the power-ups are randomized.

Once you understand these two concepts, you will have a nice, difficult time playing and (hopefully) beating the game. Good luck!

It's a decent-enough retro shooter that's similar to Contra: challenging gameplay and a variety of weapons to choose from, as well as a jetpack. Now that there's controller support, the game works and plays fairly well. There are a few problems, however. The lack of aiming up can make fighting aerial targets from the ground a bothersome affair, and restarting the level after running out of lives can make this a frustrating experience for some. The music isn't very memorable either; while they're not terrible tunes, they're not something I can hum to every now and then either. Despite these faults, it's still a decent shooter. The included bonus game, Alien Splatter, isn't too bad either.

This game was born to be a classic but now I'm confused.
After the removal of X360 gamepad support I'm even considering to return the game (it's now unplayable since it can only be played with the keyboard). The author also promised a lot of extra content - however in a matter of days he simply had changed his mind. As a consumer I'm not feeling respected.

Jet Gunner positive aspects:

1) 8-bit graphics, controls and music. No matter how many indie games already did that, it still amazing to me.
2) The weapons are very creative and unusual. I really liked them. I also liked the fact you never know the weapon you'll get - so every time you play the game it feels fresh and different.
3) The extra game included "Alien Splatter" is also very nice.
4) The jet! It's very original and well planned. Makes me wonder how nobody used this mechanic back in the 1980s. At first 'Jet Gunner' looks like a 'Contra meets Shatterhand' title - but the jet makes it very unique.

So... The game is way to good to not be fixed. Please let me play it again using the X360 controller and finish the promised updates. I'm still giving a thumbs up hoping for good news.

Remember when you were a kid, everytime you wake up, you will turn on your N64, blow into the cartlage and play a game just like this, megaman, metroid, etc. for $3.99, this game is a MUST buy, the jetpack that you're character uses is such a cool feature and it is super useful to either escape some enemy's or saving yourself from death when you fall, if you were one of those people like me who played games that are identical to this on the N64, then revive you're childhood and buy this game, and some parts, it feels like hotline miami with it's challanging levels, my only tick with this game is the controls, it will take a long or short time to get used to the controls on a laptop, if you have an xbox controller, use that because it is a bit easier for me because i have a laptop. ok, don't read this anymore, buy it (Excuse my bad english, i am french :-)

I've got kind of my own little steam game based retro console going on my alienware. If it were a real console, I couldn't be happier with the launch line up, and Jet Gunner rounds things out so nicely with amazing run and gun platformer action - the first of its kind that really feels like an NES game but with none of the things that make going back to that console sometimes a little disappointing. Jet Gunner has the pallet and graphics you remember, but the controls are way more air tight and the whole experince is just smooth as silk. It really says something about this game when it saves your progress so you can continue from the last level you played but I always choose to play from the begining anyway because the experince is just so much fun. This may be the best purchase I've made on steam so far. I could give this game a simple but controversial three word review, and I mean this sincerely: "Better than contra." This game isn't just reminecent of the NES era, its what we all thought NES gaming should have been but so rarely was. With some distance between us and that wonder console now we can finally craft games that emulates its unique style but corrects all its limitations to bring a simple, addictive, and blissful gaming experince and Jet Gunner shows them how its done. Plus a hardcore a challanges mode to keep you coming back to master the game (and unlike many games, this one is actually fun to pursue mastery of) long after you've beaten it standard. I really hope other retro style game developers are taking notes on this title but even more than that, I need Jet Gunner 2 to be a thing in my life.

Jet Gunner isn't perfect, but it's a decent retro 2D action game much like Megaman and Contra. You get a jetpack which auto-regenerates it's fuel and you collect gun power-ups as you go. The game can be quite frustrating however, as the enemy placement seems to be questionable at times, especially on levels where you travel vertically. I still found myself having fun as I finished the last few stages, so I'd have to recommend the game if it seems interesting to you, especially since it retails at $4.

This is a really great action game. The graphics are reminiscent of NES action games, but with a high level of detail, like Shovel Knight. The game play is also taken from classic NES action games, with modern elements like a life bar, a rechargeable jet pack, and assist-robots.

The best part about the game is that it's not NES frustrating. You don't need super human skills to advance in the game. Although you will die, a lot, it's fair and never cheap.

You simply can't go wrong for the price.

When I first saw that game on Greenlight I just couldn't wait untill release.
Then the game was released and so it bringed me a little bit of a dissapointment.

PROS

+ Graphisc: These retro style graphics are just like taken from the best 90' games. Both the background and characters animations will make you feel like playing your old good NES once again. 9/10
+ Soundtrack: Same for soundtrack. Perfectly suits the game, however it could contain a little bit more of tracks. Using same one for all 25 challenge stages was a bit annoying. 7/10

CONS

- Gameplay: The weakest aspect of a game. The thing that made 90's games special was their playability. This game have none. You can use only 2 buttons: fire and jump. Maybe it's same like in old NES games but when I launched it for a very first time I was suprised that I can't even aim my weapon up or down. You can only fire your weapon left or right - thats all, and with certain gun combinations it makes so hard to hit the enemies that are close to you. The physics are weak, main character is slow and the knockback is really annoying. 2/10
- Main story: The game has no story. Go to the space base, kill the Mother Brain -> profit. In fact you don't need a story for an arcade game, but...
The levels (all 5 of theme, what makes game very short) are very unbalanced. You are dashing through very easy stage to face the hard boss. The further you are, the bosses are easier. Just like the devs run out of ideas for them. I was tryharding to beat first one but killed last 2 (including the final boss) for a very first try. The final "F" level is nothing more than a boss rush when you just have to face all bosses again one by one without dying to reach the motherbrain. In fact, I had more fun playing extra challange mode levels than a main campaign. 3/10
- Level desing: As I said, the first stages are bit easy but still fun to play. There is almost no difference in difficulty between stages 1 and 4. However, the fifth one is hard as ****. But not in a challenging way. It rather reminded me IWBTG series, where everything was covered by spikes and traps and the only way to beat the level was repeating it again and again untill remebering locations of every single enemy and trap. 4/10

Summing up, if that game was released like 20 year ago, it would be just fine. But for now, it's definitely not worth its price and I would not recommend buying it. I hope it would change in a future as a game would be still develeoped.

But if you only want to bring some good, nestalgic memories back - go ahead and try it ;)

I enjoyed this game. Up until Stage 5, it got a bit too NES-hard for my taste at that point.
I gave up because after losing all lives the game sends you back to part 5-1 which I honestly just found laborious and that made me not want to get the timing right on the stage hazards on the later parts.
It's a tough game but I'd still recommend it for the price it has.
