What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“During the process of greenlight, I'd had some great feedback from the community and it helped me develop the game further and make changes that people wanted before they'd even had a chance to play the game. I'd love for that to continue with their hands on it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'd like it to release by the end of the year at the latest, assuming development continues the way possible. The longest I'd want to take is early 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will differ greatly. Originally I was using place holder graphics. Since then I've switched the design style slightly to better suit what I've been aiming for and there's an entire roadmap of features on the way that will greatly increase what the player continue, and even after release I'd love to keep building on the project.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is early alpha with the basic game mechanics in place. I'd like players who really want to test out and support the development get involved.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, it'll be much cheaper during early access to support the development and then raise in price gradually as content is developed before a final price at release. It will still however be fairly priced throughout.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'll be opening up methods to submit suggestions and feedbacks, interact regularly with the community and steps are already in place to help build support for the game such as language interpretation to open the game up to users in other countries.”

RPG Tycoon Updated to Version 0.2 - "The Economy Update" - What's New?

In the video below find out everything you need to know about plenty of the new features that Alpha 0.2 brings and as the build for 0.1.9 has been quite well received I've made a few tweaks and set Alpha 0.2 available for everyone on all platforms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILTIKg7n10w

If you've been opted onto the Public_Beta build of the game most of these features have been available to you for a while now. The last leg has just been updating and tweaking a few features based on feedback and fixing some minor bugs. I'm not going to post a list of everything that's improved since the last public build, if you're interested in that you can check out all of the previous announcements to see what's changed in detail.

Some of the notable new features include:

  • 4K Monitor Support
  • New Stores
  • A Supply Chain for Stores
  • Building Upgrades
  • Speed Controls
  • Finance Data
  • New Settlements
  • New Achievements
  • Save Slots
  • Bug Fixes

The stretch to 0.2 has been fun and I really think that this update brings more gameplay and management to you outside of the quest system. In the future I'll be further exploring this economy and making it even more in-depth but the focus now switches to really improving the quest system, making it more intricate and exciting to engage with.

THIS UPDATED VERSION BRINGS NEW SAVE DATA TO THE GAME SO IT IS RECOMMENDED TO START A NEW GAME AND DELETE YOUR PREVIOUS SAVE GAME.

Thanks for all the support.

Version 0.1.9 now Available in Public_Beta - NOW SUPPORTS 4K

Version 0.1.9

Hello friends!

For those of you that have chosen to "Opt In" to the Public_Beta Build of the game will now get to experience and test out some of the new features available that are being worked on for the 0.2.0 "Economy Update" coming soon. This build comes with some new features which I'd love for you to play with / feedback upon as all of your feedback so far has been wonderful and once the Economy Update is available I can't wait to show you what else is planned.

Thanks to your support from purchasing the game I've managed to fix one of the biggest issues from many players requesting support for resolutions higher than 1080p. I can confirm that 4K resolutions should now be supported with this update.

Some new features with this build include the reworked Library system which now allows players to spend gold and purchase books which they can then use to unlock new technologies such as the Production Buildings. With this technology includes the new Blacksmith building which allows players to produce and craft their own items which they can then transfer into the inventory of their Kingdom. Basic Time Controls have also been added to the game for those impatient players who just want to skip through stuff. (I'm one of those people) so you can now Pause, Play and Fast Forward the game. All of the Achievements should now be working and can be viewed in-game through the Achievements button. These are just some of the new features included in this latest build and I'm now working on improving all of these features & refining them / bug-fixing them to a better state ready for the public release in a week or so.

As previously stated the Public_Beta build doesn't go through bug-fixing/testing before release so you can expect the possibility of running into some stability issues with the gameplay, but it'll help for early feedback of these bugs and reactions to the new features. The Public_Beta is free to opt-into by right-clicking on RPG Tycoon in your Steam Library and accessing the Betas tab from the properties menu.

If you uncover any bugs, please report them and be sure to mention that you're using the Public_Beta build please! This will help iron them out for the public release at 0.2 shortly.

Also please keep in mind that these new features very well may mess up your old save files so it's recommended to start a new game with this update.

Update Notes

About This Game

RPG Tycoon is a simulation game that puts you in control of a newly established Kingdom. The previous leader of the Kingdom left its followers in despair and it's up to you to grow your Capital and reclaim the title of the most honoured Kingdom in the land!

In RPG Tycoon you hire Heroes to work for you. The Heroes you hire will undertake Quests for you, doing good deeds for the Kingdom, spreading word of your power and they may even pick up a few things to help you out on the way.

It's your job to manage the Kingdom and let the Heroes do all the hard work for you.

Development Progress

Current Features

  • Customisation - Currently kingdom naming! Extending further to Heroes/Quests etc. during development.
  • Kingdom Building - Start from scratch and develop the capital the kingdom needs but probably doesn't deserve...
  • Core Quest System - Earn money and develop your kingdom through quests. Because grinding, questing fun!
  • Quest Combo System - Experiment with different combinations of Settings in quests to discover the most beneficial outcomes.
  • Heroes System - Hire Heroes for your kingdom, send them on quests and develop their skills.
  • Hero Classes - Hire different classes of hero and affect quest outcome.
  • Random Map Generation - Each new game will start with a slightly different Kingdom layout for you. (Currently just Tree allocation but extending further later)
  • Adventurers - Grow your kingdom and witness adventurers visit to see what you've got on offer.
  • Research - Once the kingdom develops, use books in the library to grow your kingdom further and discover new technologies.
  • Story / Game Events - Witness and react to the world around you as it grows alongside your kingdom and discover rival kingdoms to compete against in the land.
  • Original Soundtrack - Currently 3 music tracks developed specifically for RPG Tycoon to enjoy while you play.
  • NO MICROTRANSACTIONS - Microtransactions suck. Purchase the game and you won't find any of them here. Ever.
  • References - Pop culture is fun! So are Easter eggs... and chocolate... and lots of other things...

These are just a few of the features currently in place at the moment. The rest of the game will continue to grow and change as development advances.

Understanding the Inspiration

RPG Tycoon is inspired by games like Theme Hospital, Theme Park, Roller Coaster Tycoon and Game Dev Tycoon to name a few. We wanted to take some of my favourite things about games like this and apply it to some of our favourite things about RPG's (Levelling Up, Resource Management, Stats etc.) to create a game that people will enjoy.

Early Access Review
(First reveiw ever) Before I start let me get something across, do not buy this game if you are looking for a game to play right away. Some of these people seem to forget its in early access which sometimes means theres not much content. it will be worth it if you have patience though. Ok now heres my reveiw.

This game shows ton of promise, theres not alot of content right now, but hey its called early access fora reason. Each update does change the game quite a bit. You may think its a simple point and click roller tycoon crap, but wait theres more! If you dig down deeper theres actually strategy you need to put into it.

EX: How much food should Philip take on his quest? Where should he stay? Oh no! They don't care for raiding quests!

This games makes you think. If you truely want to get what you want out of a quest you need to test certain quests. Now on to more of the game. As of right now just wait for more updates, I am hoping they make great decisions so ill recomend it.

Lots of potential but quests damages ruin the entire quest almost always.
Also if you get to a very early point in the game your stuck.
Just not enough gameplay.

Yeah... guys... This isn't even an early release in its current state. So many random little things that are so badly done that it makes no sense. The most recent one I've noticed being that if your money Ever goes below 0 even for a second you are automatically booted from the game with a game over screen. No tycoon does that. There's a grace period of being in debt in Every game, and for a game like this where it's likely you are going to lose money at the start of the month and have no way to force your hero to go any faster at making you money, then there should be a month of grace by all logic.

The spelling and grammar is completely off, and those are in such simple things and so blatant that by all logic they should be fixed by the next release version (And as they've been there since I first bought this game...)

If ya wanna see a really cool concept, check this game out, but if you want to play a cool adventure manager, then you're stuck with things like Recettear for the time being.

I have played a lot of tycoon games/strategy/management games and that's why here are too many things which made me stop playing this game... Only few of them: crappy user interface, lack of info regarding many items or buildings, poor game world and unbalanced upgrading scheme.
Upgrades are just boring and the quests are straight dull, without giving you the possibility to improve the chosen strategy/resources allocated (the debriefing at the end of the quests are almost useless).
I'm not looking for graphics in games and, especially in tycoon games, this really doesn't matter, so I will not comment on the pixeled style of the game.
Overall, I just cannot find one good reason to like this game.
Maybe this game is still under development and/or improvement but, at this stage, it should not cost more than one buck.

So, for an early access game I had some fun with what was there.
I managed to get almost all the buildings up ( except the 50k gold one) before maxing out my quest types. At some point I was working on maxing out the areas to do quests in, when I became unable to do more quests. That was a mood killer.
Tried to fire the hero I was using and get a new, it didn't work.
This game is still a lot of fun, but just remember what "Early Access" means.

Some things for the dev should he/they see it.
I placed my store on the edge of the map ( the one that I can sell items to) and the adventurers were traveling to the oppsite side of the map to buy something, and then moon walking back. While hillarious, probabley not what you intended.

There's an issue with hiring more than 1 hero ( I can't) and aparently if you hire two of the same kind, then you'll get charged for two, but not be able to use the second.

I was finishing up a raiding quest ( i'm fairly sure it was a raid) and it told me "I need more null"
I was more confused when it told me my stealth didn't help and I didn't have any points in stealth for the quest.

I'd really like to see the ability to redo a quest you've already done, although I am hoping that they grayed out "previous quest" will at one point allow you to do just that.

Again, I had fun and I cannot wait to see more from this game in the future. Now's a great time to pick it up too!

A unique gaming experience: pay money for the semi-pixelated game of a genre dominating free online gameplay. The only reason I would play this game for any length of time would be for the steam achievements and badges. Otherwise, this game will collect dust.

Still, it's only $5 retail price and in continuous development. Therefore, if the objectives of the developer resonates with you, then throw $5 to the game's future development. I have no buyer's remorse, myself.

UPDATE: REVIEW OF v0.1.6 AT THE BOTTOM

/start of v0.1.4 review
THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE CURRENT (0.1.4) VERSION AND WILL CHANGE WITH EACH UPDATE

Right now the game is obviously in it's early stages - which I like because this is what I want and EXPECT in Early Access!
However one thing that really bothers me is how similar the system is to Game Dev Tycoon. I loved buying buildings, hiring heroes, but with each quest it just felt like I was back playing GDT, exploring quests unlock other quest categories (genres), exploring settlements unlocks other towns (consoles).

When you've picked the quest type and which city you want to do it in, you then get a nice menu where you adjust the different things you take with you in preperation for the quest. After you are finished preparing, you then adjust three seperate sliders which show up periodically for different scenarios. Early quest, mid quest and then the end of the quest.
You then get points in three different categories after each scenario: Loot (yellow) Influence (Blue) and Damages (Red) you try to get the least amount of Damages as they are similar to the "bugs" on GDT.

The travelers are a cool addition though, they come to visit your settlement and have few things to say about it, hinting to things you lack, like somewhere to get a drink etc. I really really hope that the system gets an overhaul, because it makes the whole thing feel really lackluster. Especially considering that Adventurer Manager is the exact same price as this. It has been out for longer, but ever since it was out it had a decent amount of gameplay, still I love the whole idea of controlling a bunch of adventurers while the player is more in the role of a king etc. So I hope this game improves over time.

But as the game is right now, I would not recommend it. One thing I have to hand to the dev is that there are barely any bugs in-game.

Check the feature list.

The thing I noticed first was the fact that you now start off with two hero slots which was pretty sweet.

Aaaaand that was all i noticed.

So my opinion hasn't changed AT ALL.

I understand that this game is in development, so I'll try to leave this sweet and short and update my review once this game is out of beta. Which, in my opinion, it shouldn't have been released this early. In it's form now, it's painfully boring, slow and repeatative. You're placed in a large valley and it's obvious you're supposed to be building a civilaziation, or so I think. You're sent on repeatative quests that cost more than you'll get. If you're lucky maybe a villager will buy your $10 potions.

Like I said, I think this was released way too early. It has potential, but for now I can't say I'd recommend this game.

Two things significantly wrong with the game is that the font is about size 4 and full screen doesn't work. This could be just me, but the entire time I played I was hunched over and squinting just to read.

So here's my thoughts on this so far.

It's an absolutely great start , you get to plop down the basic buildings , learn to juggle upkeep costs with actually earning enough for your kingdom , upgrades , buildings stuff like that. The few downsides right now would be that the game tends to just freeze up every now and then , and there's nothing you can do about it. So if you're going to play this save alot and be prepared to be a bit patient as you'll only have 1 hero for a good while and he gets fatigued at times. And the other minor gripes I do have would be with the way you set the sliders for your heroes on a quest. Things like Rush , Guard , Conflict sure you get the basic ideas but it's still very much vague , however the game is in early access and I'm hoping they'll make things like that a bit more accessible to people so they actually know what they're setting their sliders to and how it affects your hero on a quest.

All in all , promising and excited to see more of it! And the price point is extremely fair too.
