What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I consider Rodina to be in "ongoing development". This means that I will keep adding new features and game content as time goes on.

I personally do not favor the concept of "Early Access", as it implies that Rodina has a definite release date with a target feature set. This is not the case- Rodina's development is more reminiscent of games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress, where you could imagine features being added forever, and designations like "Released" and "Beta" are entirely arbitrary.

Although I am super proud of it, Rodina is in Early Access because I don't believe that the game has enough gameplay features to justify selling it to people expecting a full, polished game. Once the game is ready, it will be taken out of Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I will wait until Rodina has significantly more character gameplay - bases to invade, the ability to board enemy ships, NPCs to interact with - before taking the game out of Early Access. This is a bit of a judgement call, since Rodina isn't intended to have a traditional release, but more gameplay is a base requirement for passing that milestone.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan on adding boarding actions, NPCs, and settlements to the game. Right now the only interior you can enter is your own ship. The big mid-term goal will be adding other locations, and NPCs to interact / fight with.

Over the long run, I aim towards making Rodina a "Daggerfall in Space".”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Rodina is currently a "full game" in the sense that it is meant to be played from start to finish, and that there are minimal bugs. You can explore the entire solar system, fight with hundreds of procedurally-generated groups of enemies, and investigate dozens of journals and books.

However, there isn't currently enough content or gameplay. That's what I'm working on right now!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If Rodina really improves, I may increase the price as time goes on.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is very important to me. In the past, customers have been given the option to vote on what I work on next. In adapting my system to use Steam, I can't guarantee that I will continue that scheme, but I will continue to listen very seriously to community input.

The thing about Rodina is that there are hundreds of possible features, and I'm excited about all of them. The community is very important in helping me figure out which direction to move in next.”

Dev Update: More mod support and big under-the-hood physics refactoring

Hey guys, not a big deal with this dev snapshot but I made some medium-sized under-the-hood changes to the engine to help simplify NPC stuff. It involved a lot of changes to physics management and might break stuff (I think ship crashing is broken) :P

Also improved mod support even more. Now music and shaders should actually be supported.

Figured I'd update the dev build so modders could take a look. And if you notice new crashes or physics-related problems, let me know!

PS: I also took the green/red LOS lines out.

Experimental Mod support on Dev Branch!

I just updated the Dev branch with an experiment that I've been working on: better Mod support for Rodina!

The big concepts:

* Rodina now creates a "Mods" folder
* Players no longer need to manually copy, overwrite, or backup files to install a mod. Simply place the folder containing the mod in the "Mods" directory and run the game
* Each mod can have its own Data folder, Script folder (all matching the layout for the main game). The game will automatically load these assets and, in some cases use them rather than the original game assets.

I tested this with a handful of mods and some of them work perfectly as is. A few won't work with the new system yet, but there's nothing stopping you from installing a mod the old way.

Internally, this involves big changes to the way scripts load. I'm positive that these changes will cause bugs. That's why they remain experimental and in the dev branch for now. I welcome feedback from modders, and also any bug reports about things suddenly not working!

Rodina is made mostly by one solitary, sleep-deprived developer - a 10-year veteran of the games industry who previously worked at Bethesda Softworks on Oblivion and Fallout 3. You can always contact me at brendan@elliptic-games.com

Future Vision:

Over time, I intend to work on Rodina towards the direction of "Daggerfall in Space" - a seamless procedurally-generated space RPG on a massive scale.

Frankly, this is crazy! I can't make any promises about where Rodina will go or how long it will take, but I can promise to keep working on Rodina for as long as I'm able to. I'm committed to making Rodina great, and I hope that what's already released shows that I'm capable of delivering something different, vital, and fun.

Please try the demo, and if you like what you see and pick up the full game, all your money will go towards Rodina's future development!

Buy this ♥♥♥♥! now!

I've played a lot of space games and even written my own. Rodina is the only one that really drew me in and captivated me. It's the perfect mix of piloting, exploration, and combat. Very peaceful and beautiful. The art style is minimalist and the particle effects are really cool and helps makes the game look very unique.

Combat is extremely fun, and the trails left by enemies help orient you without the need for HUD elements crowding your screen at close range.

in this game you really get a feel for the sense of scale. landing on a planet is exciting and dangerous.

Fires break out forcing you to leave your cockpit and don a fire extinguisher. If you've rearranged the interior of your ship make sure to place them in places where you may need them.

I would like to see this game extended into a procedural galaxy with more types of planets, moons, nebulae and destructible terrain. Since this game allows modding I may move forward and try to add in concepts I built in my own gravity simulation/solar system generator.

Thanks for the awesome game.

TL;DR: 6/10

Pros:

Atmospheric

Nice soundtrack

Good, non cliche story with elements of sadness and jokes.

Adjustable realism

Planetary landings.

Varied enemies

Ship interior customization

Interesting events like ship fires.

Cons:

Unfinished.

Crashes regularly

Simple graphics but poor performance

no sprinting even though the areas are giant

Feels empty

Combat needs to be fleshed out

Overpowered enemies that can kill you in seconds unless you are very lucky

Conclusion:

A nice game that might get old quickly unless you are patient enough for updates. Not the best game in it's current state, but still enjoyable.

I didnt play it far.
But I know I will.

Its simple, thats true.
Its also the only game in the last 3 decades of games I've played... that lets you:

Start driving, let go off the wheel and walk around the ship while it travels.
Its got other cool stuff too.
I like it, worth the price.
Fun.

I have only played this for a few hours but I have followed this game for quite a bit now. I think this game is completely amazing and if you love space games with combat and exploration then this is a perfect game for you. YOu even get to design your own ship's interior.

For an Early Access game I would give this an 8.5/10 because the story it has so far is kind of short.

Some things I would love to see added is the ability to create bases on planets. This seems like a game that would be perfect for having that feature, where you could have gun turrets protected your base while you go out and explore. It just seems like a fun little thing to add.

And something that would be pretty difficult to add but in the end would bring in so many new people is a multiplayer function. As it is, the enemy is pretty strong so being able to work as a team to take them out could be really cool, and the players could start in seperate areas so the have to meet up or something.

I love this game so far and will play a lot more of it in the future.

Did you see that trailer for No Man's Sky? Have that space exploration itch located in the most awkward spot? Well this is the closest thing you're going to find that can reach that itch.

Rodina is set in a single solar system Occupied by 4 life size planets, over 400 gigantic asteroids, and 15,000 tiny asteroids. All of them are teeming with loot, lore, and a hostile alien race. It is up to you to ensure that Humanity can colonize this new system safely before they arrive.

In Rodina, your ship, is YOUR ship! You can set the layout of your ship however you want and furnish them as you please. Make your bedroom, bathroom, engineer room, and your bridge. There's even a Tile set made entirly of Holoscreens, which project the outside area on the walls in 3D, making it perfect for cockpits and/ or observation decks, so that you may gaze upon the stars.

Space combat takes some getting used to, but very satisfying as you unleash hell on alien fighters and watch them hurl towards the surface of the planet in a fireball of glory!

Space exploration is a tad bare bones at this time. You find a marker, destroy any hostiles gaurding it, land, grab the Datasticks (lore), Encryption Keys (story progress), and any special weapons ammo, and repeat. Although you can exit your ship, and explore the surounding terrain, theirs not much to see other than some amazing vistas on mountain tops and HUGE canyons. This is my only gripe in the game, however the Developer is very active in the community and is working on fleshing the game out.

Did i also mention Mod support? Can anyone say, kestral ship mod? :P

all in all, for $15 you're getting alot for whats available right now. This game is a little bare right now, but already has more heart and soul than any Triple A game that iv'e played in awhile. There's a 60 minute demo for you to try out, please try this game out, this is a must have for any space buff out there.

P.S. The soundtrack is amazing too. It feels like a mix of Intersteller and Firefly. ^_^
