Honestly, I picked this game up due to boredom and wasn't expecting much, but what I experienced was some of the most fun I've had with a game
This is how Retro Throwbacks should be done
The entire game is over the top and hilarious, from its insanely destructive, gorey gameplay to the "Area Liberated" message you receive at the end of each mission, I found myself laughing out loud throughout the whole playthrough.
The pixelated art style is very nicely done, especially the effects such as explosions and sparks (which you'll be seeing a lot of)
The real thing that suprised me about Expendabros was just how polished and in-depth its gameplay really was. The shooting feels meaty and again, going with the theme of the game, over the top. There's a handful of enemy types and traps to face off against and a whole bunch of characters to choose from, each with their own weaponry and special ability, each more fun than the last. Oddly enough, the game has destruction physics, you're able to destroy pretty much anything in your way, even the terrain, which adds so much replayability to a short taster of Broforce.
My only real complaint would be the bossfights, there's only two in the game (technically three but the first two are the same boss) and each one feels very unfair. I understand it's going for a hardcore retro feel, but there's a fine line between meaty challenge and frustatingly unfair. Also, I found that I could exploit both of the bossfights using the destructible terrain.
(WARNING: SPOILERS FOR AN HOUR LONG GAME AHEAD) For the first boss (second encounter) I found that I could climb on top of the tower and the robot and his missiles couldn't reach me. He eventually did the ground slam attack so many times that he destroyed the terrain underneath him and fell through the floor. For the second, all I did was climb onto the roof of the building and grab onto the side of the machine and punch my way in. If it weren't for these exploits, the bossfights would be rage-inducing to say the least.
Overall, I highly recommend this game. Absurdly fun, addictive gameplay, fantastic visual style, suprisingly great destruction physics and an overall 'MERICA! vibe to it and was worth the nothing I paid for it. I reccomend the Team America soundtrack whilst playing it. DEFINITELY picking up Broforce!
