About This Game

***Not Compatible with Mac OS 10.8.x and above***

Prepare for a different kind of poker night in a very different kind of club. In Poker Night at the Inventory, you'll deal with Penny Arcade's clever, cunning Tycho, Team Fortress 2's hulking Heavy, Homestar Runner's self-proclaimed "awesome icon" Strong Bad and the hyperkinetic "rabbity-thing" from Sam & Max. These characters come together in ways some never thought possible, in a setting few would have predicted.
Unlock new TF2 items by beating The Heavy, Max, Tycho, or Strong Bad at high stakes games of poker.

The Enthusiast's Timepiece: Tycho's favorite timepiece (equippable by the Spy)

License to Maim: Max's Badge (equippable by all classes)
The Lugermorph: A second chance at Max's personal armament (equippable by the Scout and the Engineer)

The Iron Curtain: The Heavy's first love (equippable by the Heavy, obviously)

Dangeresque, Too?: Strong Bad's styling glasses (equippable by the Demoman)

Poker Night at the Inventory is exactly as the name implies- a night of poker at the poker joint Inventory. It features cameos from Max (Sam & Max series), Tycho (Penny Arcade's On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness series), The Heavy (Team Fortress series), and Strong Bad (Homestar Runner Flash Cartoon series). In between or during hands, the characters have comedic discussions about different topics, for example Tycho and The Heavy can have a discussion based upon The Heavy's hobbies, or Max and Tycho can talk about firearms. I personally enjoy the cast of Telltale Games' Poker Night 2, featuring Ash Williams (Evil Dead Movies series), Claptrap (Borderlands series), Sam (Sam & Max series), and Brock Williams (Venture Bros. Cartoon Series), with GlaD0S from Portal making a cameo as the dealer. The AI is also more agressive in Poker Night 2, so if you want a good poker game, go to Poker Night 2. Other than an inferior cast of characters, there's really, for $4.99, no reason to not get the first one, as you also get Team Fortress 2 items.

WARING!

It have been crashing on Mac OS since 3 years back and there's no way to play it seems. If you are thinking of buying this game for your Apple-computer - have bootcamp ready or move on. Telltale have responded to the problem, and it won't be fixed.

Just google "Poker Night at the Inventory Crash Mac" and visit their site with the forum thread. Official response says "Mac OS X 10.5 or newer (Not Compatible with Mac OS 10.8.x and above)". Although on Steam it says "Mac OS X 10.5 or newer".

If you only want this game for the TF2 items, go ahead and buy it, but be warned; You're going to need to spend a decent amount of time playing and learning poker in order to get the items.

If you want the game because it's a poker game, and you like poker, then you'll probably have fun with this one.

If you want this game for any reason other than those two.. Who are you?!

Poker for nerds! What could possibly go wrong?

...not that much, as it turns out. Despite the rather exploitable AI, repetitive announcer, and my continual cringing over the fact that its premise is literally a crossover fanfiction, Poker Night at the Inventory isn't actually really bad. The presentation is great, but then again it would be with Telltale at the helm.

They at least knew that many people would buy this primarily for the Nerd Cred(tm) and/or Team Fortress 2 items, so first time players get a series of helpful prompts that literally tell them what poker is. I'm sure it outright introduced a number of people to Texas hold 'em; not bad for a light card game with added videogame flavoring and dumb banter.

Poker Night still doesn't run that well on modern computers, although thankfully it runs better than it did when I hoovered up all the TF2 items years ago.

There's almost no variation on the announcer's voice lines, to the extent that they became ingrained in my memory, as was the repeated spectacle of literally everyone but me playing a full house and Max somehow winning each time. Still, the characters are solid (apart from Tycho who straddles the line between sarcastic foil and jerkass foil) and the writing manages to be entertaining nonetheless.

I guess if you want to play a simple card game while listening to some of your favorite characters trash talk each other, I'd recommend it, although I freely admit I'm not crazy about it. I bought it a long time ago just for the items. It's a very interesting idea on paper, having multiple intellectual properties from different genres playing poker, but it didn't exactly grab me in practice. I can't say how either this game or promotional item collectors will fare when TF2 eventually declines.

Also, I feel it's worth mentioning one of the achievements is for getting a straight flush, a hand that literally has a one in thousands chance of happening. You pretty much need to automate the process.

This is a nice, cheap game that was probably more fun than a lot of other games I've played lately. There's just something about playing a game of cards that invigorates your brain (there's actually some studies that have been done that shows that just playing Solitaire alone provides a lot of mental stimulation). The fact that the game provides a bunch of cool characters to play with, rewards for other games that honestly make you feel accomplished and god-like when you acquire them, as well as various unlocks and random banter between characters makes it even more worthwhile.

I've got to say, the company that manages to take a kind of niche concept like this, gives it a bit more gametypes (more than just Texas Hold 'Em but other card games as well), multiple characters, and a multiplayer mode will probably make a ton of money. I've had more fun just dipping my toes into this game than I have attempting the F2P collectible card games currently available on Steam right now. I will definitely be playing more of this, even long after I get the weapon skins for Team Fortress 2.
