I bought this game because it was five dollars and being new to Steam I had to add $5 to my Steam wallet before I could add friends and such. I loved the Sam & Max series from Telltale, and have heard great things about Monkey Island and some of their other episodic game series. I bought Puzzle Agent because I thought it would be similar to that format: casual, short, point-and-click, humorous. There was also a puzzle or two in Sam & Max that actually made me think.
This game is not like that. In Sam & Max, the puzzles are smoothly embedded directly into gameplay. You take this bowling ball, you click on this window, and you drop it on the guy below. You pick up the bowling ball of your own accord and can carry it wherever you want, for as long as you want, until you figure out what to do with it. If you can't figure it out, you can turn on various hint levels and the character dialogue will release a little more information to help you. But here, the general gameplay is too easy, showing you exactly where to click with no setting to turn this off. It feels like you are in a level that teaches you how to play, but it's like that all the time.
Once you get into a puzzle, gameplay is halted until you complete it, which is annoying, and on top of that, it is oftentimes a stretch in relating the puzzle to the actual game in the first place (making them seem pointless). Frequently they don't give you enough information to complete the puzzle without a hint, or it isn't well-explained, and when they are, they are so easy, they could be for children or teens. Plus, the puzzle formats are the same thing over and over again - you endlessly rotate tiles, literally connect dots, and do logic problems like in math class at school. A lot of time is spent tallying your score from these dumb things, surprisingly. And then once you can get back to the story, which you want to finish, you get to the end and nothing is explained at all. It's like you go out in the middle of the plot.
