Update V0.0.4

Hello everyone!

This is the latest patch for The Fifth Day. The primary focus for this update has been to rewrite the majority of the multiplayer end of the game in order to provide a more flexible and available multiplayer experience. Apart from fixing a variety of different multiplayer related bugs, I have added the ability to save your progression online, join freeplay matches in progress, and much more!

As I have stated earlier, I do intend to carry out this project to its final release. While I do apologize for the delay in releasing V0.0.4, please keep this in mind for future releases. That said, I will try to post updates on a more regular basis in the future.

As always, please continue posting your bug reports and suggestions in the designated forums, or send them directly to me at thefifthdaydev@gmail.com.

NOTE: Saved profiles for versions less than V0.0.3 are no longer supported. V0.0.3 profiles will still work, but a new game is recommended. You can find a full list of changes for this update below:

Update V0.0.3

Hello everybody!

Here is the latest patch for The Fifth Day, focusing primarily on reworking and producing a better baseline for the AI. I was able to address some of the key concerns expressed by the community, but I still have plenty of interesting ideas for producing more dynamic AI behavior in the future.

I greatly appreciate everybody's help in offering suggestions and posting bug reports in the designated forums; your support is extremely valuable to both myself and the development of a community behind the project, so thank you for being such an awesome group of people!

In other news, the development team is expanding! Over the past couple of weeks, I have spoken to and added a second developer to the project in hopes of adding new ideas and content to future updates.

Below you can find a full change list for this update:

  • Completely rewrote the logic behind npc AI in order to provide more modular functionality and room for expansion on future behavior.
  • Added dynamic pathfinding for AI.
  • Added AI avoidance for steep drop offs and cliffs.
  • Added ability for hunters to shoot targets above or below them.
  • Added the ability for hunters to predict the enemy's movement and attempt to fire at the predicted destination.
  • Added a small chance for hunters and detonators to drop loot upon being destroyed.
  • Added lock on sound for hunter.
  • Added the behavior for swarm to hover around and protect their master by default.
  • Added command to lock swarm patrol area.
  • Added command to unlock swarm patrol area.
  • Added trails to swarm flight paths.
  • Changed command line interface to be case insensitive.
  • Fixed issue that caused AI to walk through solid walls.
  • Fixed issue that caused harvesters to become trapped in trees.
  • Fixed bug where disabling a harvester prior to payload drop off would result in an empty resource pod.
  • Fixed bug where harvester would idly hover in one location.
  • Fixed bug that caused items that were left in containers to be lost after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused hacked AI to be lost after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused a loss in connection to hacked harvesters after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug with turret not working properly after loading a game.
  • Fixed issue with turret attacking its master after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused negative health and player invincibility to occur in multiplayer.
  • Fixed bug that caused sound to not scale properly when using the in-game master volume slider.
  • Increased the size of radiation fields given off by nuclear cells.
  • Increased field of view for hunters.
  • Rescaled the boost given from the luck skill.
NOTE: Keep in mind that some of these changes will not take immediate effect on old save games.

In the next update, I will work on further optimizing in-game performance as well as hopefully adding some new features and items to the gameplay.

Cheers!

-Touz

About This Game

The Fifth Day is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the time after mankind's extinction to the machines that it created. Your role, as one of these machines, is to survive in the hostile world left behind by man. Explore, build, and hack your way to victory in competitive online survival, or face the wastes alone in offline freeplay mode.

Key Alpha Features

Explore a world left by man, where rogue AI roam the lands previously inhabited by their creators and masters.

  • Explore dense forests, radioactive wastes, and abandoned cities in hopes of finding resources and surviving to the next day in this desolate world.
  • Join competitive online play. Survive alone or with a partner through a series of five days to come out on top as the superior machines of the new world. Elimination by death brings the challenge to a whole new level as players are removed from the competition after being destroyed.
  • Win online matches to upgrade your character's skills and become the most feared and dangerous machine left behind in this new world.
  • Find resources and construct your own settlement. Build anything from small wooden encampments to get you through the night to reinforced bunkers with automated defenses to protect against intruding AI.
  • In order to power your mechanical being, you will need to find and manage power sources that each bring different advantages as well as costs to using them.
  • Hack enemy AI to follow your commands or support you in your ventures.
  • Face the wastes alone in single player freeplay where all you have is your own strength and willpower to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Development Roadmap

With early access development, community feedback is vital towards producing the best product possible. Since the start of pre-alpha development, feedback and suggestions from the community have greatly helped in shaping the game to the state it currently is. The game has come a long way since the initial Greenlight submission, but there are still lots of improvements and features that can be made.

As the game progresses through alpha, here are a few features planned for implementation:

  • More NPC Characters - New machine AIs with varying and unique behaviors that will greatly enhance the level game flow.
  • Expanded Hacking - Many more options and commands for hacking and programming NPCs are planned for development.
  • Expanded NPC A.I. - Better A.I. will really provide an interesting challenge to both online and offline play.
  • New Construction Options - There are quite a few new features for construction that have been planned as well as suggested by the community that will be exciting to implement.
  • Weather Effects - Dynamic weather system that will bring new challenges as well as visual improvements by creating a more atmospheric world.
  • New Environments - New levels, environments, and biomes are planned for addition in later versions of the game.
  • UI Enhancements - Various improvements and polishing for the user interface will make for more immersive play.
  • New Online Game Modes - More online game modes, including possible team based survival play.
  • Additional Skills - New skills and abilities to provide more customization options to your character.
  • More Power Source Types - Additional options such as thermal and hydrogen based power supplies will create more diverse play as each will introduce unique costs and benefits to using.
  • Expanded Sound Design - More SFX and atmospheric sound development will greatly add more immersive qualities to the world.

Not 1 peice of this game is original, the buildings and AI and all textures are prefab copy and paste the you buy from the UNITY store.

the hand texture has obviously been taken from the hands of BF 2142 charactures.

come on guys, this doesnt seem right to me..... and steam let it gon on the store i mean what!!??!!...

i am certainly going to be asking for my money back because this smells like a cash and run "GAME".
NO, early access is not an escuse..... DO NOT buy this.
I know the textures and ai and everything else is not theirs because i played with it all in the unity engine about 2 years ago.....

STAY AWAY AND KEEP YOUR MONEY DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!.

if anyone upvotes this game then they either are friends with the "dev's" of have no clue.

Peice of Garbage.....

never ever buy this game!. the idea is great with the hacking and ai roaming but after 30 mins its boring.
i assume the game is dead because the developer dindt update it in the last 4 months. i know the developer is alone and its still an pre alpha but lately steam has been sloppy with the controlling there pre alpha products.
its an wonderful waste of 15 euro. i would almost report the game if i thought steam would actually do something about it. but since this game can still be bought i just want to warn people DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Developer has a very poorly communication he always says that this projekt is not dead and he worked hard on next update thats all, every time the same but nothing happens! The update frequency is to low thats the reason its smells like scam. Maybe it is Scam maybe not, but at the Moment its very frustrating and i personally dont believe its a good idead to fund this game. Don't get me wrong - with more updates the Game has some potencial but at the moment its very boring.

He really needs a blog or something that players can see whats going on ...

Theres only one way to put it. GIVE uS A GOD DAMN REFUND

this game is terrible. there is no updates, and after an hour of playing it gets dreadfully boring. Theres only one map to play on and... for example~~ lets say one of the power things inside a nuclear reactor; it neither has a power peice, and a capacitor. most of the AI's are over powered and can shoot through walls. and if thats not enough for you theres always one dou**e bag in the game that kills everyone. theres only three harvesters in the game and usually its owned by one person. i thought it would be fun to create a base and live there forever. but there are no circuts in the whole map to even create a simple power station.

-buged like hell
-one map
-a little laggy
-the creator hates this game
-we hate this game
-i hate you if you said you like this game
-im probably not gonna get a refund because... the creator hates this game
-i hope the creator hates me. because i hate this game
-30 minutes of gameplay. going in circles to find stuff then dying and having to start over.

ENJOY!

This game is far too broken to function properly. The basis of the game is interesting and fresh. I was very interested in playing the game after the tutroial, but once you get into the open world, the game disappoints. I am playing on a reasonably good computer, and I had to set the graphics to the lowest settings to get some semblence of work out of this game. Its features are interesting and have potential, but the game is glitchy and disappointing. I think this game can be great and fun, but it needs to have more than THREE patches on it. I understand this is an alpha, but honestly, if you're going to release a game for $15 the least you could do is make sure it WORKS. Like I said, this game has potential, but it needs many many more patches before it can be.

They tried so hard and it looked like a good project.

Then the developer probably got pulled back to reality.

Or stopped caring.

I couldn't even get this game to start and there hasn't been an update in awhile so
that alone is a red flag. When I was able to play, it was so boring and there's no way
of knowing what to do or how to do anything.

Don't waste your time or money, this is a bad game and something tells me the developer
wanted to put something out just to make a quick buck and then "forget" about the project.

This game is not ready to be played. I can't get past the tutorial because the game mechanics are basically broken.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IT IS BROKEN AND NOT READY TO BE PLAYED

If you are interested wait until it hits beta before you even consider buying it.

You are basically a cyborg that being hunted by other robots that are huntin you and all you have to do is survive. but it is really hard when you cant even jump with the broken mechanics.

DO NOT BUY

Right now, it's entertaining for about 30 minutes and that's it.

I haven't seen any progress by the developer recently and there are much better "survival" games out there as it stands now.

I'm afraid it's just another one of those "alpha" games that someone banged out to make a few bucks on and then forgot about. I will watch it though and hope it actually progresses.

It's got potential but do realize it is early access and an alpha. If you can't handle incomplete games with glitches and bugs -- look elsewhere.

Potential is nice - StarForge had mass potential and so have many other games. Some reach it, others don't so go in knowing the risks and judge it based upon it's current state for playability -and- your willingness to risk based upon that potential.

A list of things to look at:
- The skill-point system only works multi-player so you won't skill up in single player.

- Multiplayer you will end up against leveled up oponents and those levels have meaning and high value. Lots and lots of value to being leveled up here.

- Gathering requires hacking a harvester which then can take quite a while to gather things - you can't harvest anything.

- to get that hacking device you must find it.

- Robot NPC's drop nothing. You need to hunt through ruins to find weapons, ammo and other supplies.

- ammo is fairly scarce for the quantity of robots you'll bump into - again, no points for dealing with AI opponents. You're best bet is to run/aviod them.

- robots can pop up at any point near or far. They have been toned down to 2 shots to kill you but that's the best you'll get.

- AI robots cannot aim upwards. If you are above them, they can't hit you with their weapons -- if at range and above, they can and will hit you.

- AI robots can walk through walls that you build. So if you build, make the building tall and use stairs to get up there.

- You need to find power for your unit - not those silly solar cells but nuclear power. Without it, you won't be able to power up the capacitor to run, jump, etc. Extra capacitors are good but you shouldn't need too many of them.

- picking up anything early will stop your running. Anything except a nuclear power units. The solar power cells weigh a ton for the energy they give, which slows you down.

- many items are sunk in the ground and other items - you'll see loot markers but can't loot the item nor even know what it is.

Again, it's got potential but that potential has a long way to go to be achieved. IMO - worth supporting with funds but don't expect a highly clean and polished version at this time.

It runs well but it's not done yet.

Day 1
A flicker of life inside the suit, I boot up. Nothing in memory banks, programs gone systems powering up. I only have a scanner, I walk towards a tower that must have danger...... I'm drawn to it. I found a house, a hatchet. My only friend. My scanner picks someone up..... NO. Something, something metal. I walk towards it. I see a blue light, So pretty just before it turns red the a shot hits me. I hear the shot before I feel it. And I run right at the bot. I hack it to death with my hatchet. I feel powerful but only for a moment before I hear more shots. Spends night in house with a hacking gun and book.

Day 2
I wounder out into the light, I walk to the west and find another robot..... Not like the others. Freaking out so I left it alone. Later found another robot, hidden in a whole. I hack its systems. I feel connected to it some how. It flys away and leaves me alone again. I follow till it sucks up the ground. I wait and it drops a load of wood.(On my head) This day I build.

Day 3
My home it small, but enough for me. I leave to gatherwhat I can find. I found a boom stick shot gun. Ready to kill what I can find I hunt. I charge to bots and they shoot first. When I take the hit I realise its doesn't hurt, theres no blood, my mind races as I come to terms I'm no man after all. I embrace whats coming knowing I was out gunned from the start anyway. What must it have been like? To have free will, to feel, to die. The humans left us with nothing but eachother. And we have to fight.
