What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early access allows for a unique opportunity to incorporate community feedback into the development process in order to produce the best product possible. Using this feedback the game can be tailored to fit the community expectations and provide a better gaming experience for everyone.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“With many new additions and improvements planned for the game based on community involvement, it is difficult to give an exact date at this point. Over the next few months, the game will continue to evolve as new content is added and bug fixes are implemented in accordance to community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Many exciting new features and changes are planned to be implemented as the game progresses through its alpha and beta stages. A few of which can be found below:

  • More NPC Characters - New machine AIs with varying and unique behaviors that will greatly enhance the level game flow.
  • Expanded Hacking - Many more options and commands for hacking and programming NPCs are planned for development.
  • Expanded NPC A.I. - Better A.I. will really provide an interesting challenge to both online and offline play.
  • New Construction Options - There are quite a few new features for construction that have been planned as well as suggested by the community that will be exciting to implement.
  • Weather Effects - Dynamic weather system that will bring new challenges as well as visual improvements by creating a more atmospheric world.
  • New Environments - New levels, environments, and biomes are planned for addition in later versions of the game.
  • UI Enhancements - Various improvements and polishing for the user interface will make for more immersive play.
  • New Online Game Modes - More online game modes, including possible team based survival play.

  • More Power Source Types - Additional options such as thermal and hydrogen based power supplies will create more diverse play as each will introduce unique costs and benefits to using.
  • Expanded Sound Design - More SFX and atmospheric sound development will greatly add more immersive qualities to the world.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently in Early Access Alpha, therefore bugs and other interruptions in game play may be encountered. It is advised that you purchase the game at this stage only if you are willing to actively support the future development of the project.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will gradually increase over time as important checkpoints are reached in the development process. Based on the breadth of content added, the final version will most likely range from $20 - $25.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“It would be great to have deep involvement from the community in the future development of The Fifth Day. The community forums and early access reviews are good places where users can help by offering suggestions and ideas to further the development process.”

Update V0.0.6.40

Hello Everybody,

This is the latest announcement and patch for The Fifth Day! After several months of hard work, we have finally been able to integrate the first iteration of the new pathfinder into the game. We greatly appreciate everyone's patience that has held through this difficult time with us and thank you for your support.

The reason the pathfinder took so long to implement is due to the Unity 4 physics engine. There are many cases that the engine seems to overlook which resulted in bugs on our end. The main hold up on development was to handle pathfinding on complex meshes, and because of these bugs in the engine, we had to implement several workarounds to handle tasks that would otherwise seem straightforward. At this time we believe that the pathfinder is more or less stable, but we do hope to make gradual improvements over the next few weeks in addition to implementing other fixes.

If any questions or concerns do arise, please feel free to contact us at thefifthdaydev@gmail.com. I am usually able to respond in a much more timely manner here than through other forms of communication.

See a full list of changes for this update below:

  • Completely rewrote the AI navigation and pathfinding module to reduce memory usage, improve performance, and fix standing bugs.
  • Redesigned and implemented new projectile firing system that responds to physical forces such as gravity and drag.
  • Added support for energy based weapons.
  • Added support for larger projectile based weaponry (rockets, launchers, etc.)

  • Added IK support for hunter animations to improve look of movement.
  • Added jumping support for hunters to allow for scaling of walls and other structures.
  • Added two new weapon magazines.
  • Added two new weapon barrels.
  • Added two new weapon frames.
  • Added new military grade trigger.
  • Added two new weapon blueprints.

  • Increased melee weapon damage and range.
  • Changed hunter death to rag-doll rather than explosion to reduce penalty for striking with melee weapons.
  • Changed and redesigned hunter animations for more appealing movement behavior.
  • Changed and optimized hunter model to save performance and reduce triangle count.
  • Fixed bug which caused NPC's to walk through solid surfaces.
  • Fixed bug which caused NPC's to teleport backwards after reaching target destination.
  • Fixed several logical issues in NPC behaviors.
  • Implemented various other minor fixes and tweaks.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone that has continued to follow the project's development and we greatly appreciate your support. Now that the core framework for the pathfinder is in place, it should be much smoother sailing in development as we hope to go back to smaller more frequent updates in the coming weeks.

Best,

-Touz

Progress Update 01/02/2016

Hello Everyone,

We hope you have all had a relaxing holiday season and a happy new year! Over the past few weeks we have made great progress on several exciting new features planned for future release in The Fifth Day. First and foremost, the core framework for the new AI pathfinder is virtually finished. With the ability to quickly find and navigate both aerial and ground paths we hope to add much more diverse NPC behavior in the future. A few more performance optimizations still need to be implemented before release, but overall the component is nearing conclusion.

Additionally, we have received many requests on adding new levels and implementing more variety in level design. To address such concerns, we have started work on a new physics based procedural world generator. Physics based effects such as erosion and water body formation, will allow for much more natural looking terrains than traditional noise based methods. This concept is still in its early stages, but you can begin to see some of these nice effects in the images below.

NOTE: These images are of early work in progress, and are not representative of the final product.

The first image shows some of these concepts in action on a traditional fractal noise based terrain with multiple material layers and two water point sources. After the physics simulation, the rivers are triangulated to produce an optimized water mesh to save performance and triangle count.

The second image was created by combining several rain-based erosion passes with variable vegetation growth.

We hope to continue expanding on this system to deliver new worlds for you to explore in the future.

Cheers,

-Touz

About This Game

The Fifth Day is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the time after mankind's extinction to the machines that it created. Your role, as one of these machines, is to survive in the hostile world left behind by man. Explore, build, and hack your way to victory in competitive online survival, or face the wastes alone in offline freeplay mode.

Key Alpha Features

Explore a world left by man, where rogue AI roam the lands previously inhabited by their creators and masters.

  • Explore dense forests, radioactive wastes, and abandoned cities in hopes of finding resources and surviving to the next day in this desolate world.
  • Join competitive online play. Survive alone or with a partner through a series of five days to come out on top as the superior machines of the new world. Elimination by death brings the challenge to a whole new level as players are removed from the competition after being destroyed.
  • Win online matches to upgrade your character's skills and become the most feared and dangerous machine left behind in this new world.
  • Find resources and construct your own settlement. Build anything from small wooden encampments to get you through the night to reinforced bunkers with automated defenses to protect against intruding AI.
  • In order to power your mechanical being, you will need to find and manage power sources that each bring different advantages as well as costs to using them.
  • Hack enemy AI to follow your commands or support you in your ventures.
  • Face the wastes alone in single player freeplay where all you have is your own strength and willpower to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Development Roadmap

With early access development, community feedback is vital towards producing the best product possible. Since the start of pre-alpha development, feedback and suggestions from the community have greatly helped in shaping the game to the state it currently is. The game has come a long way since the initial Greenlight submission, but there are still lots of improvements and features that can be made.

As the game progresses through alpha, here are a few features planned for implementation:

  • Additional Skills - New skills and abilities to provide more customization options to your character.
  • More Power Source Types - Additional options such as thermal and hydrogen based power supplies will create more diverse play as each will introduce unique costs and benefits to using.
  • Expanded Sound Design - More SFX and atmospheric sound development will greatly add more immersive qualities to the world.

I don't understand why people are fed up with the dev for not bringing out super frequent updates, because the updates are always worth the wait. If you aren't happy about a bug in the game or about how the game plays you can report it to the dev, that's why it is in "early access" state. If you aren't happy with games that progress slowly, but don't wish to report bugs in the respective forum(s), you should not be buying "early access" games. As long as no microtransactions are added for cosmetics or OP guns (pointing at you, Red Crucible), I see no problem for this game to become a great title, even if it takes 1-3 months per update.

Got this at the very beginning of its EA, EA means that it's possible that the games won't change and you buy the product as it is....

Ya it's a gamble and this time I lost, I was less deceived by even starforge lol...

The only good thing about this game was the idea imo...

Well I could rant all day on this one, but I already wasted too much time on this review

Conclusion: Don't buy, stay away, you can get a pretty decent games for that price range, or just flush your cash down the toilet.

It WAS fun before the update where they replaced finding guns on the ground with a bad and generic part crafting.
This is just a cash grab by the developers, since development is dead by now.
It's still kinda fun however there are better games!

This is one more game that will not make it to the final.

It's such a nice idea with a robotic entity who has to survive against other robots and the environment, so a lot other people including me, bought the game.

Notice the single person development and you know the pace of updates you'd expect.
All in all, not enough things to get the game going. And by that i mean adding some serious stuff to keep me interrested.
I think i'm entitled to be so picky, since steam is flooded with Early access games. Due to the competition in the survival game sector, i want a good game to stand out. Not only that i want to see progress. I don't actually care about private problems of any developer, that prevent him or them to work on the title, they charge us money for.
This is business, and if you can't deliver then you better find something else to earn your money with.

@Valve > It's not quantity that matters, it's quality. So rework the rules about Early Access on Steam. Because there are already too many EA titles that are abandonned by the devs.

@All potential byers > Don't buy this game ! As simple as that.

bought the game despite all the negative comments and rating. in theory this game sounds promising but it really isnt. the crafting mechanic is a mess, map layout is just plain lazy, empty and really small compared to other sandbox survival games. combat is mediocre at best and almost non existent due to the terrible crafting and looting system.
dont ever buy this game to support the devs, this game is a pure ripoff.
