Progress Update 01/02/2016

Hello Everyone,

We hope you have all had a relaxing holiday season and a happy new year! Over the past few weeks we have made great progress on several exciting new features planned for future release in The Fifth Day. First and foremost, the core framework for the new AI pathfinder is virtually finished. With the ability to quickly find and navigate both aerial and ground paths we hope to add much more diverse NPC behavior in the future. A few more performance optimizations still need to be implemented before release, but overall the component is nearing conclusion.

Additionally, we have received many requests on adding new levels and implementing more variety in level design. To address such concerns, we have started work on a new physics based procedural world generator. Physics based effects such as erosion and water body formation, will allow for much more natural looking terrains than traditional noise based methods. This concept is still in its early stages, but you can begin to see some of these nice effects in the images below.

NOTE: These images are of early work in progress, and are not representative of the final product.

The first image shows some of these concepts in action on a traditional fractal noise based terrain with multiple material layers and two water point sources. After the physics simulation, the rivers are triangulated to produce an optimized water mesh to save performance and triangle count.

The second image was created by combining several rain-based erosion passes with variable vegetation growth.

We hope to continue expanding on this system to deliver new worlds for you to explore in the future.

Cheers,

-Touz

About This Game

The Fifth Day is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the time after mankind's extinction to the machines that it created. Your role, as one of these machines, is to survive in the hostile world left behind by man. Explore, build, and hack your way to victory in competitive online survival, or face the wastes alone in offline freeplay mode.

Key Alpha Features

Explore a world left by man, where rogue AI roam the lands previously inhabited by their creators and masters.

  • Explore dense forests, radioactive wastes, and abandoned cities in hopes of finding resources and surviving to the next day in this desolate world.
  • Join competitive online play. Survive alone or with a partner through a series of five days to come out on top as the superior machines of the new world. Elimination by death brings the challenge to a whole new level as players are removed from the competition after being destroyed.
  • Win online matches to upgrade your character's skills and become the most feared and dangerous machine left behind in this new world.
  • Find resources and construct your own settlement. Build anything from small wooden encampments to get you through the night to reinforced bunkers with automated defenses to protect against intruding AI.
  • In order to power your mechanical being, you will need to find and manage power sources that each bring different advantages as well as costs to using them.
  • Hack enemy AI to follow your commands or support you in your ventures.
  • Face the wastes alone in single player freeplay where all you have is your own strength and willpower to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Development Roadmap

With early access development, community feedback is vital towards producing the best product possible. Since the start of pre-alpha development, feedback and suggestions from the community have greatly helped in shaping the game to the state it currently is. The game has come a long way since the initial Greenlight submission, but there are still lots of improvements and features that can be made.

As the game progresses through alpha, here are a few features planned for implementation:

  • More NPC Characters - New machine AIs with varying and unique behaviors that will greatly enhance the level game flow.

Early Access Review
Game has so nice and promising stuff but development has been almost non existent.
I get feeling there is not even one developer working on this full time. I bought this game year ago and it looked promising then, now a over year later not much has happened in the game.

Early Access Review
This game was released in Early Access on 25 July 2014. It is currently still in Alpha and since the developer has never bothered to release a road map it's unknown if, or even when, it is supposed to progress beyond its present state.

Sadly it's now over 5 months since the last software update and the developer, Touz, continues to ignore the Steam community. A brief posting by him on January 6th was a rehash of previous statements he's made but did nothing to instill confidence that the game is moving forward in any significant way.

Current game play is, quite frankly, boring. At one time there were multiplayer servers that allowed for PVP but the online community has vanished.

The singleplayer component is bare-bones and has no goal. Essentially it consists of running around and attempting to find components for weapons and other bits and pieces while trying to avoid enemy AI. That's it. The weapon crafting system is needlessly complex and there is absolutely no reason to build a base as the AI is not programmed to recognize player structures.

The lack of any progression system, storyline or end goal severely limit replayability. This is made worse by the small static map that comprises the player world . Once all areas have been explored there is nothing to draw the player further into the game since there is no 'further' to be had.

If you are interested in this game, I'd suggest you wait. If the developer decides to actually work on the game and make significant improvements it may be worth purchasing at a future date. Right now it would be a waste of money.

Not recommended.

Early Access Review
This game has been a real let down since day one but at least I can say that in the beginning the game was somewhat enjoyable to play. I go to the power plant expecting to obtain some power cells and nothing!! Near the beginning I had always found at least 2 there. To the developers, stop screwing a game that has some potential and make it more enjoyable to play. Nothing more irritating than finding some good loot and cant run from robots because I dont have the energy and its too impossible to find them. If I could get a refund for this POS I would but unfortunaltly this was bought before steam issued refunds. To the players out there looking for a good game, look elsewhere cause this is FAR from what it used to be.
