What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early access allows for a unique opportunity to incorporate community feedback into the development process in order to produce the best product possible. Using this feedback the game can be tailored to fit the community expectations and provide a better gaming experience for everyone.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“With many new additions and improvements planned for the game based on community involvement, it is difficult to give an exact date at this point. Over the next few months, the game will continue to evolve as new content is added and bug fixes are implemented in accordance to community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Many exciting new features and changes are planned to be implemented as the game progresses through its alpha and beta stages. A few of which can be found below:

  • More NPC Characters - New machine AIs with varying and unique behaviors that will greatly enhance the level game flow.
  • Expanded Hacking - Many more options and commands for hacking and programming NPCs are planned for development.
  • Expanded NPC A.I. - Better A.I. will really provide an interesting challenge to both online and offline play.
  • New Construction Options - There are quite a few new features for construction that have been planned as well as suggested by the community that will be exciting to implement.
  • Weather Effects - Dynamic weather system that will bring new challenges as well as visual improvements by creating a more atmospheric world.
  • New Environments - New levels, environments, and biomes are planned for addition in later versions of the game.
  • UI Enhancements - Various improvements and polishing for the user interface will make for more immersive play.
  • New Online Game Modes - More online game modes, including possible team based survival play.
  • Additional Skills - New skills and abilities to provide more customization options to your character.
  • More Power Source Types - Additional options such as thermal and hydrogen based power supplies will create more diverse play as each will introduce unique costs and benefits to using.
  • Expanded Sound Design - More SFX and atmospheric sound development will greatly add more immersive qualities to the world.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently in Early Access Alpha, therefore bugs and other interruptions in game play may be encountered. It is advised that you purchase the game at this stage only if you are willing to actively support the future development of the project.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of the game will gradually increase over time as important checkpoints are reached in the development process. Based on the breadth of content added, the final version will most likely range from $20 - $25.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“It would be great to have deep involvement from the community in the future development of The Fifth Day. The community forums and early access reviews are good places where users can help by offering suggestions and ideas to further the development process.”

Progress Update 01/02/2016

Hello Everyone,

We hope you have all had a relaxing holiday season and a happy new year! Over the past few weeks we have made great progress on several exciting new features planned for future release in The Fifth Day. First and foremost, the core framework for the new AI pathfinder is virtually finished. With the ability to quickly find and navigate both aerial and ground paths we hope to add much more diverse NPC behavior in the future. A few more performance optimizations still need to be implemented before release, but overall the component is nearing conclusion.

Additionally, we have received many requests on adding new levels and implementing more variety in level design. To address such concerns, we have started work on a new physics based procedural world generator. Physics based effects such as erosion and water body formation, will allow for much more natural looking terrains than traditional noise based methods. This concept is still in its early stages, but you can begin to see some of these nice effects in the images below.

NOTE: These images are of early work in progress, and are not representative of the final product.

The first image shows some of these concepts in action on a traditional fractal noise based terrain with multiple material layers and two water point sources. After the physics simulation, the rivers are triangulated to produce an optimized water mesh to save performance and triangle count.

The second image was created by combining several rain-based erosion passes with variable vegetation growth.

We hope to continue expanding on this system to deliver new worlds for you to explore in the future.

Cheers,

-Touz

Here is the latest patch for The Fifth Day. First off, we would like to thank everyone for their support and patience as we continue to work on updates and content for the game. While we strive to address the key issues and concerns voiced by the community, we do keep an eye out on the forums when working on introducing new features and content. Your feedback is greatly appreciated so do not hesitate to reach out to us at thefifthdaydev@gmail.com if any questions, concerns, or suggestions do arise.

See a full list of changes for this patch below:

  • Added icon generator for automatically creating icons for custom built weapons and tools.
  • Added logic to prevent spawning of blueprints already held by the player.
  • Added CNC Blueprints 019 with data on Marekov (Grizzly), Marekov (Ghost), and Red Hammer receivers.
  • Added logic to fix issue in which popup windows would expand off-screen.
  • Fixed a bug in which aiming down sights and firing would not accurately produce projectile spread around the focal point of the attached sight.
  • Fixed a bug which prevented dismantling of weapons that contained the character "/" in their name.
  • Fixed a minor bug which caused cross-hairs to be pushed off screen when firing certain weapons.
  • Fixed bug in improper compass orientation.

Cheers,

-Touz

About This Game

The Fifth Day is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the time after mankind's extinction to the machines that it created. Your role, as one of these machines, is to survive in the hostile world left behind by man. Explore, build, and hack your way to victory in competitive online survival, or face the wastes alone in offline freeplay mode.

Key Alpha Features

Explore a world left by man, where rogue AI roam the lands previously inhabited by their creators and masters.

  • Explore dense forests, radioactive wastes, and abandoned cities in hopes of finding resources and surviving to the next day in this desolate world.
  • Join competitive online play. Survive alone or with a partner through a series of five days to come out on top as the superior machines of the new world. Elimination by death brings the challenge to a whole new level as players are removed from the competition after being destroyed.
  • Win online matches to upgrade your character's skills and become the most feared and dangerous machine left behind in this new world.
  • Find resources and construct your own settlement. Build anything from small wooden encampments to get you through the night to reinforced bunkers with automated defenses to protect against intruding AI.
  • In order to power your mechanical being, you will need to find and manage power sources that each bring different advantages as well as costs to using them.
  • Hack enemy AI to follow your commands or support you in your ventures.
  • Face the wastes alone in single player freeplay where all you have is your own strength and willpower to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Development Roadmap

With early access development, community feedback is vital towards producing the best product possible. Since the start of pre-alpha development, feedback and suggestions from the community have greatly helped in shaping the game to the state it currently is. The game has come a long way since the initial Greenlight submission, but there are still lots of improvements and features that can be made.

As the game progresses through alpha, here are a few features planned for implementation:

This game has been a real let down since day one but at least I can say that in the beginning the game was somewhat enjoyable to play. I go to the power plant expecting to obtain some power cells and nothing!! Near the beginning I had always found at least 2 there. To the developers, stop screwing a game that has some potential and make it more enjoyable to play. Nothing more irritating than finding some good loot and cant run from robots because I dont have the energy and its too impossible to find them. If I could get a refund for this POS I would but unfortunaltly this was bought before steam issued refunds. To the players out there looking for a good game, look elsewhere cause this is FAR from what it used to be.

This game was released in Early Access on 25 July 2014. It is currently still in Alpha and since the developer has never bothered to release a road map it's unknown if, or even when, it is supposed to progress beyond its present state.

Sadly it's now over 5 months since the last software update and the developer, Touz, continues to ignore the Steam community. A brief posting by him on January 6th was a rehash of previous statements he's made but did nothing to instill confidence that the game is moving forward in any significant way.

Current game play is, quite frankly, boring. At one time there were multiplayer servers that allowed for PVP but the online community has vanished.

The singleplayer component is bare-bones and has no goal. Essentially it consists of running around and attempting to find components for weapons and other bits and pieces while trying to avoid enemy AI. That's it. The weapon crafting system is needlessly complex and there is absolutely no reason to build a base as the AI is not programmed to recognize player structures.

The lack of any progression system, storyline or end goal severely limit replayability. This is made worse by the small static map that comprises the player world . Once all areas have been explored there is nothing to draw the player further into the game since there is no 'further' to be had.

If you are interested in this game, I'd suggest you wait. If the developer decides to actually work on the game and make significant improvements it may be worth purchasing at a future date. Right now it would be a waste of money.

Game has so nice and promising stuff but development has been almost non existent.
I get feeling there is not even one developer working on this full time. I bought this game year ago and it looked promising then, now a over year later not much has happened in the game.

I want to say before this that i only reccomend the game to those who are willing to look past its unfinished state and are fine with slow very spaced out updates, now that thats out of the way, this game is a good combination of survival with compleate and utter hardcoredness. though finding games in multiplayer is hard, if you have a few friends, you can all get topgether and survive the wastes in huge groups. (watch out for terminators, they are OP)

No servers, no players and this dev makes the devs of Towns and Spacebase look like good guys...

An absolute embarassment to game development...

(EDIT: In all fairness, edited to show that the initial drought was 5 months, and the following drought was 3 months)

This "dev" has now given us, in total, 8 months of nothing... a 5 month drought, a couple of small content-light updates, then another 3 month drought...

This "dev" took a good concept and absoutely destroyed it... in a Steam world where people EAT UP survival games, this guy managed to screw it up...

STAY AWAY

Stay away from this game
The Fifth Day is a sorry excuse of a survival game for, but not limited to these reasons:
  • Multiplayer hardly functioned
  • Near empty servers
  • $14.99!?
  • I always had the same spawn point
  • Clunky enemies
  • I hardly found any weapons
  • Not easy for new players to understand the building
  • A developer that could not care less about their product
The one factor that I will give The Fifth Day, is that it had a great idea for a survival, but horrible execution.

Do yourself a favor, and keep your money. You are better off unboxing in TF2 or CS:GO.

Well, im gonna be as genorous as i can here. this is without a doubt the worst game i have ever played in my ♥♥♥♥ing life. now, im experienced. i play roblox for ♥♥♥♥s sakes and this is worse. there are no servers and even if you can find one, its cancer. you have to CRAFT weapons which are stupidly difficult to find parts for, while being chased by giant robot ♥♥♥♥bois, not to mention if you run out of stamina, it doesnt regenerate, i said it before and i said it again, WORST GAME EVER, wouldnt get it if it was free, asked for refund.

Well, this game at first had me like WHOA, this is a great premise, and the gameplay was great. I was having fun until I played a REAl videogame. One that has substance and works right. I cant stand it when a DEV gives up. Why? Didnt make enough money? See, they should do this because they LOVE to do it, not for the $$$. Sad that this world strives off profit, this game had a lot of potential but right now, I'd rather fart into a pog holder several times, leaving it outside for 6 days in the desert, pick it up, open it, and inhale the foul flatulent than play this excuse for a game. Its pretty tho.......pretty damn awful waste of money for GIVE UP DEVs......Azztards.

It was fun for the first year, now extremely minor updates are hardly keeping it alive and when I say extremely minor I'm talking about changes to the HUD and inventory system. Shame becuase it has a bunch of potential! If it ever picks up the pace and the dev decides to gather a staff and move forward I'll change it, but I doubt he has the funds necessary to do so unfortunately.

Well, after readina lot of the reviews, I decided to give this game a go anyway.
So glad that I did.

The world is fairly open, insofar as it is a large worldbox. There's the ground, and hills, valleys, trees, buildings, tunnels, and the world extends out to the horizons in 4 directions (although you do hit the invisible wall at the edge).

There are no objectives per-se. You simply need to survive. You can collect resources (mainly via harvester dotted around the world that require hacking to activate and control). You play a drone robot, so power generation and consumption is everything. I found the fastest way was to collect solar panels from the farms and capacitors from various locations, then stand still for a while to charge before moving off.

Always keeping a watchful eye on the automated drones gives the game a certain edge, especially at night and when you're building structures. I build a small tower, and was standing at the top adding a roof when a drone walked into the bottom and exploded.
Needless to say, it took out a corner of the building and the whole thing fell down, but you take no damage from falling so dont die.
No, that comes in the form of hunter bots with shotguns that kill you in 2 shots.

Overall, in my opinion, a nice game. It contains elements I enjoy: survival, open world, freebuild of tools, weapons and structures, achievments (there are Steam ones as well as in game for solo and multi play), and most importantly, it's always recieving updates. Always small, but they are always fixing a bug or adding a new featre, which is great.

I wish this review could be positive, but how a game like this that has lot's of potential is in a state where you can't even try to get anywhere without dying by the super aggravating AI that was implemented into this great game, then I can't write a positive review. I know this game is an in-development prototype but a game good as this should at least have a good AI system. To me personally the AI is the worst thing about playing this game. Having a stable AI system that doesn't spawn ten feet in front of you and then kills you instantly and still follows you when you respawn and will try to kill you until either you or itself dies. It would be amazing to be able to do what the game has in store for you and to be able to play with your friends in peace without getting interfered by the AI, but I won't give my hopes up yet and I hope to never give my hopes up on the game's up coming development, but once this game seeks the development that it deserves I will find myself and I hope others start to praise the amazingness of this great game.

Keep up the good work Touz

Way too buggy to play right now. I have faith that this could be a good game eventually
