Update V0.0.4

Hello everyone!

This is the latest patch for The Fifth Day. The primary focus for this update has been to rewrite the majority of the multiplayer end of the game in order to provide a more flexible and available multiplayer experience. Apart from fixing a variety of different multiplayer related bugs, I have added the ability to save your progression online, join freeplay matches in progress, and much more!

As I have stated earlier, I do intend to carry out this project to its final release. While I do apologize for the delay in releasing V0.0.4, please keep this in mind for future releases. That said, I will try to post updates on a more regular basis in the future.

As always, please continue posting your bug reports and suggestions in the designated forums, or send them directly to me at thefifthdaydev@gmail.com.

Update V0.0.3

Hello everybody!

Here is the latest patch for The Fifth Day, focusing primarily on reworking and producing a better baseline for the AI. I was able to address some of the key concerns expressed by the community, but I still have plenty of interesting ideas for producing more dynamic AI behavior in the future.

I greatly appreciate everybody's help in offering suggestions and posting bug reports in the designated forums; your support is extremely valuable to both myself and the development of a community behind the project, so thank you for being such an awesome group of people!

In other news, the development team is expanding! Over the past couple of weeks, I have spoken to and added a second developer to the project in hopes of adding new ideas and content to future updates.

Below you can find a full change list for this update:

  • Completely rewrote the logic behind npc AI in order to provide more modular functionality and room for expansion on future behavior.
  • Added dynamic pathfinding for AI.
  • Added AI avoidance for steep drop offs and cliffs.
  • Added ability for hunters to shoot targets above or below them.
  • Added the ability for hunters to predict the enemy's movement and attempt to fire at the predicted destination.
  • Added a small chance for hunters and detonators to drop loot upon being destroyed.
  • Added lock on sound for hunter.
  • Added the behavior for swarm to hover around and protect their master by default.
  • Added command to lock swarm patrol area.
  • Added command to unlock swarm patrol area.
  • Added trails to swarm flight paths.
  • Changed command line interface to be case insensitive.
  • Fixed issue that caused AI to walk through solid walls.
  • Fixed issue that caused harvesters to become trapped in trees.
  • Fixed bug where disabling a harvester prior to payload drop off would result in an empty resource pod.
  • Fixed bug where harvester would idly hover in one location.
  • Fixed bug that caused items that were left in containers to be lost after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused hacked AI to be lost after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused a loss in connection to hacked harvesters after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug with turret not working properly after loading a game.
  • Fixed issue with turret attacking its master after loading a game.
  • Fixed bug that caused negative health and player invincibility to occur in multiplayer.
  • Fixed bug that caused sound to not scale properly when using the in-game master volume slider.
  • Increased the size of radiation fields given off by nuclear cells.
  • Increased field of view for hunters.
  • Rescaled the boost given from the luck skill.
NOTE: Keep in mind that some of these changes will not take immediate effect on old save games.

In the next update, I will work on further optimizing in-game performance as well as hopefully adding some new features and items to the gameplay.

Cheers!

About This Game

The Fifth Day is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the time after mankind's extinction to the machines that it created. Your role, as one of these machines, is to survive in the hostile world left behind by man. Explore, build, and hack your way to victory in competitive online survival, or face the wastes alone in offline freeplay mode.

Key Alpha Features

Explore a world left by man, where rogue AI roam the lands previously inhabited by their creators and masters.

  • Explore dense forests, radioactive wastes, and abandoned cities in hopes of finding resources and surviving to the next day in this desolate world.
  • Join competitive online play. Survive alone or with a partner through a series of five days to come out on top as the superior machines of the new world. Elimination by death brings the challenge to a whole new level as players are removed from the competition after being destroyed.
  • Win online matches to upgrade your character's skills and become the most feared and dangerous machine left behind in this new world.
  • Find resources and construct your own settlement. Build anything from small wooden encampments to get you through the night to reinforced bunkers with automated defenses to protect against intruding AI.
  • In order to power your mechanical being, you will need to find and manage power sources that each bring different advantages as well as costs to using them.
  • Hack enemy AI to follow your commands or support you in your ventures.
  • Face the wastes alone in single player freeplay where all you have is your own strength and willpower to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Development Roadmap

With early access development, community feedback is vital towards producing the best product possible. Since the start of pre-alpha development, feedback and suggestions from the community have greatly helped in shaping the game to the state it currently is. The game has come a long way since the initial Greenlight submission, but there are still lots of improvements and features that can be made.

As the game progresses through alpha, here are a few features planned for implementation:

  • More NPC Characters - New machine AIs with varying and unique behaviors that will greatly enhance the level game flow.
  • Expanded Hacking - Many more options and commands for hacking and programming NPCs are planned for development.
  • Expanded NPC A.I. - Better A.I. will really provide an interesting challenge to both online and offline play.
  • New Construction Options - There are quite a few new features for construction that have been planned as well as suggested by the community that will be exciting to implement.
  • Weather Effects - Dynamic weather system that will bring new challenges as well as visual improvements by creating a more atmospheric world.
  • New Environments - New levels, environments, and biomes are planned for addition in later versions of the game.
  • UI Enhancements - Various improvements and polishing for the user interface will make for more immersive play.
  • New Online Game Modes - More online game modes, including possible team based survival play.
  • Additional Skills - New skills and abilities to provide more customization options to your character.
  • More Power Source Types - Additional options such as thermal and hydrogen based power supplies will create more diverse play as each will introduce unique costs and benefits to using.
  • Expanded Sound Design - More SFX and atmospheric sound development will greatly add more immersive qualities to the world.

Day 1
A flicker of life inside the suit, I boot up. Nothing in memory banks, programs gone systems powering up. I only have a scanner, I walk towards a tower that must have danger...... I'm drawn to it. I found a house, a hatchet. My only friend. My scanner picks someone up..... NO. Something, something metal. I walk towards it. I see a blue light, So pretty just before it turns red the a shot hits me. I hear the shot before I feel it. And I run right at the bot. I hack it to death with my hatchet. I feel powerful but only for a moment before I hear more shots. Spends night in house with a hacking gun and book.

Day 2
I wounder out into the light, I walk to the west and find another robot..... Not like the others. Freaking out so I left it alone. Later found another robot, hidden in a whole. I hack its systems. I feel connected to it some how. It flys away and leaves me alone again. I follow till it sucks up the ground. I wait and it drops a load of wood.(On my head) This day I build.

Day 3
My home it small, but enough for me. I leave to gatherwhat I can find. I found a boom stick shot gun. Ready to kill what I can find I hunt. I charge to bots and they shoot first. When I take the hit I realise its doesn't hurt, theres no blood, my mind races as I come to terms I'm no man after all. I embrace whats coming knowing I was out gunned from the start anyway. What must it have been like? To have free will, to feel, to die. The humans left us with nothing but eachother. And we have to fight.

The Fifth Day is a survival game that reminds me of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series with the world setting but with more fo a sci fi feel about it due to the massive influence of A.I.

The main point of the game is to hack A.I to have them under your control to gather resources and fight for you so that you can build a base in peace. Other than that I haven't found many other reasons to play the game as you can run about and loot all you want but the single player aspect is pretty much limited to building.

Multiplayer was interesting but surprisingly for a survival game, everyone ended up working together rather than just killing eachother to win so that was nice,

Overall, I do not recommend this game as I feel like this is another "Early Access" game that doesn't deliver. The premise of the game is interesting but since the game is very rarely updated I feel like it isn't making enough progress or taking in the consideration of the players.

I quite enjoyed this game so far, and this will be a reveiw on the singlepayer or 'Freeplay' mode.

So, first thing to note is that this is an Alpha game, and such has an un-completed feel. However, it's a good game over-all and you can get so absorbed in it, you forget about the un-completed-ness. The map is big and most of it is desolate, having only a log cabin or two, and a ♥♥♥♥-Shack Town if you look for 'em. I feel that the loot drops, although small, wide apart, and mostly disapointing, are fitting as it's set in the apocolypse. Let's go to the pros and cons, shall we?
________________________________________________________________

PROS:
- Good gameplay
- Wide range of how to survive
- Good crafting system
- Good atmosphere
- Big, expansive map
- The hacking

CONS
- Incompitent AI
- Over-Powered enemys
- Laggy at times
- Sucky loot
- Resource managment

Although the Cons outweigh the Pros, it's easy to forget the cons and enjoy a good game for what it is; a good game.

Very interesting. Bags of potential and shaping up to be a quirky little gem. Very early days yet so not hugely involved but if you read the information carefully and find the concept interesting, it is worth backing.

Sure, the servers are infested with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s and "Friendly" servers that aren't actually friendly, but the game in itself, even as early in it's development as it is, is quite fun. The menu offers little to no information about what's going on, you get one save for offline, and online is reserved most likely for either playing with your friends or being a jerk to people who are interested in the game. I'm excited to see where this goes as the wrinkles are smoothed out.

This game shows promise and was interesting even if the world seemed really small. So far the only thing the hacking tool is good for is the harvester robot thing, its nearly impossible to hack any other robot unless your really lucky. The lack of being able to open the doors to buildings has also seemed to make things not as enjoyable. Although this is in free play single player only I have not tried multiplayer as of yet.

Great potential!

Worth supporting, though there are some things worth knowing beforehand!

Two-Button mouse is recommended - Aim and Fire are both mouse keys, and unbindable, which means if youre using a trackpad without buttons (macbookers), you cannot aim and fire at the same time.

OSX Crashes - This may just be a limited problem, but currently any gamemode, except the tutorial, crashes my game.

Currently these are the only features I have access to, heh, will keep the review updated as the game progresses.

Love this game. Much potential as long as the dev's keep up on it. The only issue's I have encountered are that some items spawn inside the ground, so you can't loot them. Plus every now and then the harvesters bug out and won't collect. Other than that it's a great game. The tutorial doesnt give much, but hey it still helps a tad.

Great game, i have had great fun so far, the only thing i would say that needed improveing right away is you dont allways feel compeled to do something on your own, its great with friends because you can allways have fun with them but once you play on your own the game starts to lose apeal unfortunatly.

Tutorial doesn't work, and neither do the ingame items. I understand it's an alpha game, but you spawn with no defence and enemies show upo everywhere after 5 minutes. Hopefully it's fixed and/or made better soon.

It's a good idea and I fully support it, but more work on the developing aspect.

I only have played for an hour or so, but this is really an empty feeling world. Walking around, finding little stuff and then a robot chased me. I could not even damage it with a .223 rifle. Seems silly to have something like that for sale. This is not a game. it is at best a glimps of something, maybe later. Thank goodness it was only a 15.00 mistake. Maybe it will be good in the future. Some drones came after me and the game pretty much was at 2 fames per second. I have a high quality quad core Tripple Channel DDR3 system with a 780 and it runs poorly.

As soon as I clicked Multiplayer, and only saw a total of 3 people playing this game online... I knew I had wasted money yet again on Steam Early Access scam of a game. They use a "♥♥♥♥ty tv" effect to try and hide the fact that their texturing, and model quality is so low. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
