Eorzea. A Land embraced by Gods and forged by Heroes. Seeking control of this realm and its abundant crystal resources, the Garlean Empire sends forth a massive host on a campaign to conquer its southern neighbor. Driven by madness, the commander of the invading forces silently plots to tear the moon from the heavens and hurl it down upon the land. The people of the realm soon learn of this foul scheme, and join their hands in prayer in an eleventh-hour attempt to entreat the aid of the gods, only to see their endeavors fail. From within the moon emerges Bahamut, an ancient terror seething with rage fueled by countless generations of imprisonment. Sensing the tug of Fate, a powerful magus channels the last of his strength to send Eorzea’s heroes into a temporal rift. There they wait, untouched by the flames of destruction, until they are needed again. Those heroes are you, and the hour of awakening is now. Come and witness a realm reborn.

Game review

Gameplay : The combat is just exactly like those Anime mmo rpgs you see BUT this game has the most beautiful skill and combat animations i've seen in probably a long time.

Story : The combat system is so good that i didn't give a single ♥♥♥♥ about the story, but it seems decent.

Graphics : Oh my god what can i say about the graphics about this game. the game's graphics are pretty good looking, and also here are some Screenshots from the Cinematic cutscenes of the game

Important Note

This review might change, because i still don't know if you can transfer your free trail account to the full version of the game.

~Thanks for reading, and have a nice day.

EDIT

IMPORTANT NOTE
: The square enix registeration system is kind of ♥♥♥♥ed up so if you accidently make your free trial account in a different reigon other EU (The steam version requires an Eu account) you can't change your region, so i recommand either trying the demo for only a couple of mins then making a new account to play the full version or just directly buy the full version.

100% unacceptable garbage design. Here! Download our game. Thanks! SIGN IN, not eligble for free trial. Make new account, eligible. Here's another 15GB update to the game, AFTER spending 30 minutes just trying to get the launcher to launch the game to launch an update. Screw you Square Enix. Aint made a great game since FF9.

I wanted to like this game, the graphics are nice, the story is great, there's lots of fluff in terms of character customisation, housing etc but the combat is most mind numbingly boring combat I've ever played in an MMO it's just too slow, every 2.5 seconds you're waiting to spam your next skill and it's just not fun at all. If you're not too fussed about combat then you'll probably enjoy it if you enjoy the turn based combat from previous final fantasy games but for me it's not what I look for in an MMO

I've only played this demo a couple of days but it's great so far. A lot better then I thought it would be. I've played many other MMO's before and this one so far has been the easist to get into. I don't know yet about the transfering to the complete upgrade. But I don't care. I know its Only a FREE DEMO to find out if I like this game. If I have to make a new character so be it. It's been fun playing. I could stop anytime. I still have 11 days. Its not about getting the most free days possible. Its about having fun.

So HATERs go hate some where esle. This is a great game and deserves more positive recommendations.

If your interested in this game read why people are putting it down. And remember everyone knew it was a free demo. Not a free start for your first character.

I played the trial through and then at the end of the trial I went out to the store and bought a copy of the game to keep playing. DO NOT DO THIS. THE RETAIL KEY WILL NOT WORK. Not only does it not allow you to continue with the trial characters. You have to create a whole new Square Enix account to even be able to register the game. This is written nowhere on the steam page before you start the trial and only shows up when you try to convert your trail to a full game.

Please do not use this trial if you want to purchase the game through retail. Please say this was helpful to upvote it as this info is nowhere on the steam store page for the trial.

Update:
For the people telling me I don't know what i'm doing please be more polite. I followed all instructions and even spoke with Square Enix support and they said themselves it was impossible to continue using Steam trial characters when purchasing a retail copy of the game.

1. Make sure you know what platform(s) you'll be playing this on for the future. Licenses on console, PC, and steam are all separate and confusing.
- If you buy the base game from steam, you have to buy the expansion from steam.
- If you buy the base game for PC (non-steam), you have to buy the expansion for PC (non-steam).
- If you buy the base game for a console, you have to buy the expansion for the same console.
- If you want to play on multiple platforms, you must buy the base game+expansions again for those other platforms. Otherwise you won't be able to login through those platforms with the same account.

2. Know the trial limitations.
http://support.na.square-enix.com/faqarticle.php?id=5382&kid=70929

- after the trial ends, you have 90 days to upgrade or risk losing all your progress
- 1 character per server, 8 characters total. Not a big deal since you can play every class on a single character.
- level cap of 20 for each class. I recommend leveling several combat classes since it only takes about 2-3 days to reach this cap. Even if you're planning to play on a single class, you'll want cross class abilities and get the requirements for your level 30 Jobs.
- gil cap of 100k (raised from 20k). As long as you don't sell all the allagan pieces, you won't reach this cap.
- Cannot use /yell, /tell, /shout, form a party, use marketboard, use retainers, trade, or join free companies (guilds). These are all put in place to restrict gold spammers and bot farming. But it also heavily restricts normal players from making friends, helping others (or requesting help), managing their inventory, or even just checking the value of stuff to see whats worth keeping/trashing. A lot of content is post level 20 too, and this makes the trial a very narrow experience.

3. Learn about enmity/aggro management before joining a party. The game does not teach you this at all and it is a core mechanic to all party content. tl;dr tank should have all the aggro, dps should always focus whatever the tank is hitting, and healer should avoid overhealing players. Unless you are the tank, you should avoid using aoe skills until much later in the game as they create a ton of enmity quickly. Breaking these will usually mean the enemes aggro the dps/healer, you all die one by one, and everyone gets salty.

4. The game is very story driven, combat is really slow and forgiving early on, and the trial stops long before things get interesting. If you are a familiar fan of Final Fantasy lore then this will be fantastic for you. If you are new, this might easily bore you.

5. This is an mmo. Expect grinding.

WARNING: DO NOT PLAY THE FREE TRIAL ON STEAM UNLESS YOU INTEND TO PURCHASE THE FULL VERSION AND PAY THE MONTLY FEE THROUGH STEAM.

Creating an account via Steam renders it IMPOSSIBLE to add retail keys to your account (the opposite is also true). Since neither Square-Enix nor Steam / Valve mention this anywhere, I learned the hard way. Square-Enix doesn't care at all that it is a problem for users. They put the blame on Steam / Valve, and expect you to deal with them if you have any issues. Terrible customer service all around.

If you intend to buy the retail version (which is often offered at a discount) then play the trial by downloading the client here: http://www.ffxiv-freetrial.com/us/

If it wasn't for this one issue, I would recommend you try this trial, but I cannot. (I do recommend the game itself, just know what you're getting into.)

The only thing more addicting, more expensive and life-ruining than heroin is Final Fantasy XIV.

Please send help, I'm already planning on buying the full game.

OK, here's how I got the thing to work. After I registered a new SqEnix account via the launcher, I got no email.
Then I logged into http://sqex.to/Msp using the email/password that I put in the launcher. It showed a different SqEnix ID than the one I put into the launcher.
Go back to the launcher, select "I have an account" and enter the SqEnix ID i found on the website and the password from earlier.

Works fine for me. I managed to create an account easily.
Bad thing is that the free trial does limit a few things, for example you can't party with players and friends.
[EDIT]
(Thanks for PauloGamer for bringing it up)
You don't have to put in the one-time password. Just put the username and normal password.

Being a long time MMO player and especially spending years in WoW, FFXIV is a fresh new take on the MMO genre, beautifully designed environments, easy to learn and get into story, the Customization is expansive and the free roaming fate groups that pop up randomly and the droves of people who come to assist you on larger mobs, it just has everything that a good MMO needs, quest scaling and mechanics are great, I honestly don't understand all the Hate about this game.

I am definitely going to purchase the full version. 10/10

Quite possibly the best MMO i've played in a long time. I'm planning to upgrade my account the moment my trial runs out tommorow. The trial is not without its limitations, for starters, you cannot chat with anyone outside of your party, you cant join guilds and you can't progress one of your classes past level twenty. Luckily the game removes the needs for alts (secondary characters) as your character is able to change classes by changing weapon. During the 35 hours or so I played, I managed to get 5 of these classes to level 20, in most MMOs I feel like giving up by the time I've gotten one character to ten. The plot is very traditional final fantasy, you're the chosen one of the crystals yada yada, but it managed to hold my attention, particulary with its voiced cutscene segments that are avalible in multiple languages including Japanese. Along with the main storyline you have a class story which is updated every 5 levels. All the members of the comunity on EU Odin, the server I choose, were helpful and plesant, even when I didn't have the ability to ask for help, they'd dismount and throw you a heal if they saw you in trouble.

I'll finish with this. If you're itching to play an MMO and WoW no longer does it for you. Play this game. There's an expansion just around the corner too.
