Couldn't get into it. The game felt flimsy and cheap, as if I was just playing a browser game. For a roguelite to be successful, the gameplay hook has to be compelling enough that you want to hop right back in after dying. I never found anything resembling a hook, and after awhile I just couldn't stand it anymore.

Bought this game for a friend and myself, intending to play coop online. When we started the game, immediately we noticed a terrible lag. Whenever either one of us (or any followers we rescued) killed an enemy or performed an action like activating a shrine, the game would freeze for half a second. This became a huge issue.

Furthermore, my friend would not keep his character levels he gained in each playthrough, instead having to start at level 1 each time. Meanwhile I would continue to level higher each playthrough, meaning the game was impossibly hard because my friend would be level 1 each time.

Not recommended for anyone who wants to play coop online. Requested a refund.

Vertical Drop Heroes , is a fun roguelike that consist to earn money , pay for upgrade and slain enemy to level up , up your stats and go farther in the game .
the graphics are good as the music and the environement
there is a lot of skill and ability which give to that game a lot of pleasure
lots of monster and boss with different abilites
the level up system is really good , as it fill up your heath points and that you rarely find hearts it will constanly change your gameplay from rush to safe
And you have an upgrade system that will persist after the death which make all your run usefull .

for the conv maybe you wont meet the same probleme or desapointement that i met , maybe your game will work better that mine . here they are:

-the multiplayer system is'nt working as well as i expected , you will have tu use hamachi if you want to play with a friend
-Sometime when i complete a level , my game randomly decide to crash which is kinda annoying , to that fact i can't etablish a hight score , or to simply enjoy the infinite mode as i should
- The random charactere selection will make you crazy , you will spend a lot of time to try to get what you want from it and if you leave the game OR if your game crash ... u will have to do it again , it would have been nice if it could be a bit less random ( at least offering us the possibility to choose a weapon or 1 ability)

overall this game is enjoyable to play and totaly worth 7€

Vertical Drop is addictive. With a myraid of different class, skill and talent combinations that can be rolled each game. Every playthrough has a slightly different playstyle that keeps things fresh. e.g. a Dagger hero can go solely for backstab damage which keeps the pacifism status throughout the stage, Shotgun heroes only have a very limited amount of ammo per round which once squandered. you're screwed. I particularly like the Staff hero with the Sand Worm skill (Get the game, play it, and you'll know what I'm talking about)

HOWEVER... This game, unfortunately, is plagued with "Fatal Error"s that crashes the game. Which makes it extremely unpleasant especially when you're going for a high score. Looking at Discussions, it seems I am not the only one. Hopefully the devs would address this issue asap. Buyer beware.

This is a fun game to play in your free time. You get to play with controller and pretty much, it's a randomly generated 2d vertical roguelike dungeon-crawler. Unlock new skills, weapons, traits, etc with each playthrough and it's a fun game and you should try it, if you are into roguelike games.

Honestly, wasn't expecting much from this game. Got it in a bundle and I figured why not give it a go. Its an amazingly simple but fun game. Traverse down a "vertical" level until you reach the bottom boss. Beat him, rinse and repeat. Every level is a little bit different, and the abilities you get over time are fairly unique and fun. Its a great time to pass the time in short playthroughs. That, and its so undemanding I usually play on a W10 tablet with a steam controller. Pretty nice for on the go.

This game is especially fun to play with a controller, and more fun to play with a friend.
It has about infinite replayability, but soon you start to find certain patterns and pick paths differently based on
your inventory like keys, weapons, and skills.

It eventually gets to the point that you have to "reroll" to get the character you want. Its not impossible, but it does take a lot of time to build your still tree and to luckily hit your lucky character build.
From an achievement hunting perspective, there are no cheats i have found to make the game go easier; however, you will not get bored from trying to finish the game so many times.

Rogue like games are pretty common and they all need to have something to distinguish them. For this game it's having all it's level built as vertical decent. Something that is obvious from the title.

In addition to that 'pacifist orbs' reward you for collecting them before killing any monsters on the level. After players can take advantage of teleporters to warp to the top and slaughter enemies on a second pass to optimize each level's run.

The rest of the game is standard rogue like hooks: use gold to unlock abilities, upgrades and warp points. To inch ever closer to the final goal. Add in the multiplayer options and the end product is a solid little package.

Kind of like Downwell meets Rouge Legacy. go down a vertical hallway while fighting monsters with unique characters. go for stronger stats or just amazing skills. grind to level 50 or don't kill anything and collect pacifist orbs.. the choice is yours. Made my Nerdook (the best flash game maker of all time!), i was excited for this. I was not dissapointed.
PROS:
fast paced
Many character customization options
Various sidequests and objects to interact with
A TON of upgrades.
CONS:
Luck based at times
Incredibly bad difficulty curve (each level is about ten times as hard as the last)
Ranged weapons with ammo as a whole.
poor starting options.
Overall, get it, but maybe wait for a sale.

A cute indie game, one ive enjoyed very much. This is one cheap game I definately recommend, its very similar to Rogue Legacy... in the sense, once your character dies what he has managed to collect is left for the following hero. Theres different weapons to pick up, skills and traits. 10 levels in all with a final boss level, each very similar but varying in enviroment from castles to snow. Its a easiar game than the above mentioned Rogue Legacy imo although... thats not to say its not a challenge because it is. Overall I rate it 7.5/10

Nerdook games aren't for everyone. And I am one of those people who finds them annoying.

Back in the day when I didn't have many games on my Steam account there was this wonderful place called the internet to search for old games, Java games or Flash games which were pretty much free and easy to pick up. When I still played Flash games I played quite some of these games made by Nerdook and they were somewhat fun to play. A lot of stuff to play for a low price of website ads.

Unfortunately the charm didn't really last after seeing the massive collection of great indie and AAA titles on Steam and finally being able to buy them. Vertical Drop Heroes HD is pretty much the same game as the Flash version with just small changes but overall features the same gameplay.

The game is roguelike 2D-verticalscrolling-"platforming"-game where your goal is to upgrade your stats, gain levels, defeat bosses and finally be powerful enough to complete the game. It certainly sounds like a neat idea and the game plays quite nicely but after a while some people will notice the reason why I can't recommend this game and some will just enjoy it hour after hour.

The keyword here is time. Overall, the game is quite easy, Money grinding is time consuming and doesn't really reward you enough to keep doing it so you'll just use all your cash on level skips instead. You either play it the long way getting all the upgrades for your run and maybe reaching the final level in a couple of hours or you take it slow and get bored with the game.

Even though the levels are randomly generated there is not much difference between the levels on each run. Same enemies and block on every certain level and the only things that do change are the bonuses and mini-quests on levels. These award you bonuses for your current run only.

This game certainly works for those who don't really like games with deep story plots or multiplayer games but still want something to play on your coffee breaks this is just the game for you. But even then this game lacks power of you wanting to complete the game for other reasons than getting the Achievements.

Might be worth picking up on Sale. But be very careful since this game maybe won't be the game you desired.

This is really cool dungeon crawler/roguelike with random generated levels (there are 10 lvls), the music is amazing, graphics are well made and very colorful, easy to learn easy to master it, support controllers, easy to 100% achievements. For the price, you might wont to buy it on a discount (i got in a giveawat).
The only bad thing about this game -IMO- is the heroes randomly generated, you can't choose your weapon or even your skills, abilities but that might be good for other peoples.

Basically Rogue Legacy with vertical maps and an alarm trigger mechanic that freshens the formula up quite nicely. Really well pitched difficulty curve as you move through the maps, controls nicely, only real negative is the occasionally janky hit detection.

Great way to waste a stolen ten minutes here and there.

Verical Drop Heroes really caught me off guard and exceeded my expectations!!!
At first let me share with you the best part of it i personally loved:It's a mix of some of the greatest and most beloved indie games out there! The platform mechanics and gameplay as well as the facial fun expressions are insired by Battleblock Theater!See for yourself ;)

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=486342875
So let us continue and talk about gameplay! So gameplay is really uniqua and actually a lot relaxing! You can even set attack to auto and jumt move throught the map.Pretty simple huh?You also have two special attacks one range based(bow, spear, arrows) and magic(you knew that was coming)!
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=486344606
The gameplay is really similar to Rogue Legacy! You can give your best shot thought the dungeons(10 levels with increased difficulty as you progress)! When you die you restart at your base where you can upgrade you health/damage etc, play trials and complete challenges!Furthermore every dungeon ends with you killing the Big Boss (or psssit you can use some keys, pick the lock and get the hell outa there! )

Last but not least as mentioned before there are 10 main dugeons, randomly generated, with a big amount of strong monsters and deadly traps waiting for you around every corner!!!
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=486344930

Overall impression:
Soundtrack 9/10 relaxing and tensive!
Gameplay 8.5/10 pretty fun and relaxing, but kinda repetitive after some hours.
Graphics 9/10 cartoonish
Complete score 9/10 Must have indie game for all ages and tastes!

4/5 stars. Vertical Drop Heroes HD is like Rogue Legacy "lite"...in a very good way.
Most of my playtime with Vertical Drop Heroes HD has been with the GOG (DRM-free + original VDH) version. So my Steam stats don't reflect my total experience with this game.

PROS:
+Pick up and play accessiblity.
+Easy to learn, difficult to master.
+Fast arcadey action.
+Stages are randomly generated, assuring replay value.
+Unlocked abilities can be used with future characters, but characters can only carry 2 unlocked abilities with them at a time. This allows for very customizable gameplay, while keeping it challenging.
+Gamepad support: Xinput (360, or Logitech F series set to "X").
+Modest hardware requirements; most PCs built in the past 8 years should run VDH-HD.

CONS:
-No Linux support at the time of this review. But, given VDH-HD uses OpenGL, Linux users may be able to run it via Wine.
-No Direct Input (Logitech and generic) controller support...yet.

Huh, I didn't expect Vertical Drop Heroes HD to be a rather intricate Rogue Legacy-style game where you can choose between heroes with different abilities and level stats up permanently, I thought it would be something simpler.

Don't know about the longevity yet (haven't unlocked the more difficult New Game+) but compared to Legacy I prefer the short levels with a mini-boss at the bottom instead of having to grind a while before getting somehwere. Here there's instant gratification including temporary level ups you lose after dying and permanent upgrades that are purchasable in the levels and in the hub with gold (which you only lose between runs when rerolling the heroes offered). Keys are important as well as they're used for multiple purposes like opening chests, removing obstacles, freeing computer controlled helpers or even bypassing a mini-boss with five keys. And there's more, for example short quests that get you XP, water that flows around when blocks are destroyed, the possibility to warp back to the top and lots of tombstones which e.g. spawn artifacts but also enemies when activated. Enemy variety is high, graphics are good enough for a 5-7€ game and the artstyle reminds me of Scribblenauts (in a good way).

Almost forgot another nice touch, you can play as 'pacifist' and gain more XP by picking up symbols that disappear after killing one enemy (kills by ai companions don't count). Also levels have modifiers, enemies with less HP but more damage, two bosses instead of one etc.

A few cons: No online coop, only local and LAN. Sometimes enemies spawn right into me and when the health is low can lead to an unavoidable death. Or there's a bunch cuddled together and it's impossible to fight them without losing a lot of health (but avoiding those mobs is an option most of the time, plus health gets restored when leveling up which happens frequently). Lastly the controller config needs work due to a few inconsistencies and bugs and button icons would've been appreciated. Overall the controls are fine though, very responsive.

So thumbs up from me so far, a pleasant surprise.

PS If someone cares for that kind of stuff the achievements are done right here, reasonably difficult and going for them will teach you some of the game's mechanics.

Vertical Drop Heroes HD is a fun little game, good for playing in short sessions. It's like a lite version of Rogue Legacy + Spelunky. It's a good introduction for anyone who wants to start playing roguelike-like games, because it's not so hard as others in this genre.

Highly addictive Rogue-like game, the gameplay is really fun and a lot similar to Rogue Legacy but instead of side-scrolling you slide down till you reach the bottom of the level where you fight a boss then you can proceed to the next stage.
at the start of each playthrough you have a choice between 3 randomly generated characters with different attributes, choose what best suits your type of playing and proceed, you character starts at level 1 everytime but there are upgrades you can buy before starting the game with the money you collected from your previous runs, you can even buy level ups to your character and skip stages with that money.
the game is really fun and addictive, the soundtrack is good and the graphics aren't bad at all, and like all Rogue-like games, if you like it you will end up spending tens of hours in this game and you will never regret spending your money on it.
highly recommended of course.

This was an impulse/curiosity purchase and ends up being a game I play most often...and I have a lot of games! It's fun, it is challenging, but not to the point of discouraging or losing enjoyment, and it has the feel of new-and-different on every playthrough. Levels are also varied and add to the freshness of each play. There is a load of variety in weaponry and special abilities, more special weapons and abilities you can work toward, and there is a rougue-like feel throughout. If you are thinking about getting this, it's a safe bet you'll have fun with it, and can either play for a short term or long. I've put a good amount of time into this game...I suppose I like having fun, then! All in all a very pleasant surprise.

Just to relive the nostalgia, I had to go back and play the original Vertical Drop Heroes on Kongregate. This truly does its predecessor justice, giving that fantastic risk-reward system and adding so much more to it. There are some aspects of the game that are easy to exploit (using Confusion on the Worm boss makes the fight ever-so easy, especially when I know recharges are around the corner), but even with that, the game provides a good challenge and requires you to put both your platforming skills and rogue-like decision making skills to the test. I especially like the addition of the pacifist system. Normally the choice of "To fight or not to fight" comes down to whether or not you can gain more than you lose, but in this case with many fights being winnable without much or any loss, a reward for avoiding the easy massacres is tempting and very worth it. The story itself is also simple but very befitting; so often do games tell of the great hero that overcame evil with the dozens of game-overs in between never even being acknowleged. Knowing that each failed attempt is simply another step in the story makes me even more anxious for the next attempt.

I look forward to seeing what comes out of Nerdook Productions next. Even if it's another remake of an old Flash game, I know it will be as good-- if not better than-- the original.

It's currently in the Humble Weekly Bundle, I recommend picking it up.
