A cute indie game, one ive enjoyed very much. This is one cheap game I definately recommend, its very similar to Rogue Legacy... in the sense, once your character dies what he has managed to collect is left for the following hero. Theres different weapons to pick up, skills and traits. 10 levels in all with a final boss level, each very similar but varying in enviroment from castles to snow. Its a easiar game than the above mentioned Rogue Legacy imo although... thats not to say its not a challenge because it is. Overall I rate it 7.5/10

Nerdook games aren't for everyone. And I am one of those people who finds them annoying.

Back in the day when I didn't have many games on my Steam account there was this wonderful place called the internet to search for old games, Java games or Flash games which were pretty much free and easy to pick up. When I still played Flash games I played quite some of these games made by Nerdook and they were somewhat fun to play. A lot of stuff to play for a low price of website ads.

Unfortunately the charm didn't really last after seeing the massive collection of great indie and AAA titles on Steam and finally being able to buy them. Vertical Drop Heroes HD is pretty much the same game as the Flash version with just small changes but overall features the same gameplay.

The game is roguelike 2D-verticalscrolling-"platforming"-game where your goal is to upgrade your stats, gain levels, defeat bosses and finally be powerful enough to complete the game. It certainly sounds like a neat idea and the game plays quite nicely but after a while some people will notice the reason why I can't recommend this game and some will just enjoy it hour after hour.

The keyword here is time. Overall, the game is quite easy, Money grinding is time consuming and doesn't really reward you enough to keep doing it so you'll just use all your cash on level skips instead. You either play it the long way getting all the upgrades for your run and maybe reaching the final level in a couple of hours or you take it slow and get bored with the game.

Even though the levels are randomly generated there is not much difference between the levels on each run. Same enemies and block on every certain level and the only things that do change are the bonuses and mini-quests on levels. These award you bonuses for your current run only.

This game certainly works for those who don't really like games with deep story plots or multiplayer games but still want something to play on your coffee breaks this is just the game for you. But even then this game lacks power of you wanting to complete the game for other reasons than getting the Achievements.

Might be worth picking up on Sale. But be very careful since this game maybe won't be the game you desired.

Does Vertical Drop Heroes HD succeed at making a flawed Flash game into a worthwhile PC gaming experience?
The biggest problem with Vertical Drop Heroes HD is that it is not very enjoyable. In general, nature of the game as a roguelike offers a tempting challenge to complete 10 levels, but once you do that, you don't want to play it again. It’s more a game you enjoy completing than actually playing. While there’s some joy at the start, it’s too easy to get burnt out on the grinding, dying, grinding, dying, grinding, dying pattern, all the while hoping you’ll get the perfect combination of character traits that you would both enjoy and succeed with. Back to the original question: does Vertical Drop Heroes HD succeed at making a flawed Flash game into a worthwhile PC gaming experience? Well… it doesn’t fail. It’s difficult to ignore the things it does well (level design, variety in abilities, etc), but it’s just not up to the challenge of balancing the tediousness of a roguelike with the fun of an action platformer. Check out the demo before you decide to buy this game.

Like Rogue Legacy, only 90% less awesome without all the pesky gameplay and production value. This is basically a flash game where you fall down a shaft of platforms while swinging your sword at monsters. It does have all the cool upgrades and different traits, which can be addictive, even if the game itself is far too one-dimensional. Not likely to keep your interest so much as compel you to grind numbers and unlocks, but on a day when you are sick and don't want to deal with a complicated game, this is still more entertaining than a match-3 game. I'd rate this "Neutral" if that were an option

Fun platforming roguelike game.

The goal is to progress to the bottom of the level and defeat a boss to continue progressing. In these levels you may find traits that you can purchase for future characters to use, mini-quests that involve finding objects on the same level, coins, and other heros who will fight enemies too.

There is also pacifist orbs which grant coins and exp, but you must not fight enemies. If you do fight an enemy then the orbs will vanish from the level.

Dying will cause you to restart level progress, but you get to keep the coins you found during your adventures. You'll be sent back to the main hub where you can use these coins to permentally boost your attack damage or health. Similar to Rogue Legacy.

Overall a lot of great fun.
