What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We ran playtests of Fractured Space with a small section of our community since the earliest playable build of the game, and have been gathering feedback and comments ever since. Early Access was a logical step to get more input from a broader audience.

Fractured Space is an ever-growing, ever-evolving space combat game and we want the community at the very heart of the experience. Early Access is the perfect vehicle for this; we want you on board from the word go, and want to give you the power to help shape the continuing development of the game.

We're trying to innovate. We know we don't have all of the answers, however, or even all of the questions, but - having previously worked on Strike Suit Zero - if there is anything the last few years have taught us, it's that there is a depth of knowledge understanding and innovation in the space combat community that we really need to tap into. You are a big part of creating the best capital ship multiplayer game ever created.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We originally planned our Free-to-Play release at the end of 2015, however we have since expanded our scope and as such we're aiming to transition Fractured Space from Early Access to Open Beta later in 2016. More on this below.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Naturally, during Early Access, we will continue to develop the game. Much of this time will be spent adding the features we have already planned, which includes - but is not limited to - new ships, new weapons, evolving the in-game levelling system, expanding on crew, additional ways to play, polishing the main game mode and generally taking the game from its Early Access incarnation toward the game we've always envisaged.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

In the current build of the game, you can look forward to:

  • Multiple unique capital ships across three different manufacturers, each one of them with its own playstyle and more being added with each update.
  • A variety of officers to select and build your perfect crew and lead your ship to victory.
  • Weapon variants to unlock and own for your ships and allow you to alter the way your ships play.

Two game modes

Conquest. Our primary game mode in which teams fight for domination of multiple sectors with the aim of capturing the opposing team's home base. This mode is fought on a single map containing 5 sectors of space that ships can warp between. Sectors have forward bases to occupy, mining facilities to capture among asteroids that provide hardcover.

Frontline. Fast paced action with all players assigned any of the ships available in the game at random. This is a streamlined version of the core game focussed on territorial control and team fights.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Fractured Space is a Free to Play model and this will not change upon release into Open Beta. We've ensured that our Founders Tiers - now closed - offered great value and exclusive items to our players before the official release of the game. Other packs will continue to be offered.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're throwing open the doors to the Edge Case studio, adopting an Open Development ethic in bringing the game to life. To complement this, we'll be listening very carefully to comments from our community every step of the way. After every update to the game we'll adapt the game based on the collective thoughts of our community in parallel to the design vision for the game.

If you want to talk through ideas for next steps, ask questions regarding design choices or simply hang out with the team and other members of the Fractured Space community join us every Thursday evening between 19:00 and 21:00 UTC on our Twitch channel. We're also on every social network you'd expect and are committed to involving you in conversation and the decision process for the game, so if you have feedback we're keen to hear it.”

Alpha 18 Update Notes

New Features

TDS Executioner
Difficulty: Hard
Length: 806m
Crew: 4,856
Base Hull Strength: 9,000
Initial Max Speed: 550

The Executioner is a flexible craft that revolves around its high-yield Gauss Cannon and mobility solutions despite is native slow engine speed and attack frequency. The craft fits the close-quarter hit-and-run archetype with its versatile and extendable mobility options which can be used in tandem with each other: the Overdrive diverts power from the main cannons to its engines for superior manoeuvrability and its Chrono Blink ability that allows it to return to its position a few seconds in the past. With these systems in play, the Executioner can start off in a rear-guard position before rapidly moving to the vanguard with its weapons charged before retreating, ready for another attack.

Gauss Cannon
Max Range: 12,000m (1.2s x 10,000m/s)
Optimal Range: 7,500m
Volley: 2
Base Damage: 720 + 100 AoE
Base Charge Time: 7.4s

A predecessor of the Interceptor's Gauss Driver, the Gauss Cannon delivers a nuclear warhead at extreme velocity to deal high impact damage to a single threat, with minor collateral damage affecting those within the blast radius. The Cannons automatically charge but require pilot input to fire. While powerful, the cannons have a considerable cooldown and low tracking speed which makes mobile craft harder to target.

Chrono Blink
Max Range: Sector Wide
Time Stamp: 40s
Base Cooldown: 35s

Chrono Blink allows the pilot to return to a previous position and orientation up to forty seconds in the past. Used tactically, this ability affords the pilot to disorientate a target or press on an objective, whilst strategic use sees the Executioner able to fall back to survive or support the rear line. Time is reset any time the Executioner jumps or blinks.

Overdrive
Duration: 60s
Energy Cost: 500 on activation + 250p/s
Base Cooldown: 60s

A toggle ability that increases the manoeuvrability and speed of the Executioner by diverting most of its power from its primary armament. While in Overdrive the Rate of Fire of the Gauss Cannon is increased but the impact of each shot is drastically reduced, lowering its potential damage output.

Executioner Missiles
Range: 15,000 (3s x 5,000m)
Volley: 12
Base Damage: 35ppd
Base Cooldown: 15s

Built around low-yield high-frequency use, the Executioner Missiles is a harassment weapon system that is designed to apply pressure to a target as the pilot moves closer to initiate their Gauss Cannon strike.

Stasis Field Buoy
Max Range: 12,000m (2.4s x 5,000m/s)
Area of Effect Radius: 3,000m
Triggered Duration: 30s
Base Cooldown: 90s

When deployed, the Stasis Field travels in the indicated direction for 2.4s or until it contacts something. It then generates a field that gradually slows all enemies within sphere of influence to a complete stop for a set duration, or until the buoy is destroyed.

New & Reworked Sector Variants

- Obulon Cascade

- Glacial Array

- Umber Expanse

- Pillars of Erebus

Improved Mines

- Lights on stations will now change to represent who has control and the Capture Sphere has been adjusted to be more visible whilst capturing. New Capture Complete sounds have also been introduced.

Completing Your Crew

- We have added a new means for completing the current selection of crew. Crew will now be made purchasable with DNA. Please be aware this not intended to be the way you acquire your crew normally, this is for completing your set. Convert your Credits into DNA and complete your Crew today.

World Game Skins

- Represent your country and adorn your favourite ships in your native Flag colors. If your country is not yet included, why not fly the Jolly Roger skins? These skins will only be available for a limited amount of time.

Add to Friends

- At the end of a match you are now given an option to add your comrades or your opponents to your Steam Friends List to continue the fight.

Player Review System

- At the end of matches you will now be able to upvote or downvote specific players within that match. This will help us identify those who are acting in an undesirable manner whilst also rewarding those who act in an honorable way during their time in Fractured Space.

Blinks

- Blinks now have a normalised Blink to Target Distance of 1,500m which, working in tandem with new code, will resolve blink failure issues.

Black Widow

- Added a Smart Rockets variant for the Black Widow.
- Added Plasma, Slow, Concussion and Hangfire Missiles to the Black Widow

Ranger

- Ranger's Light Longbow Cannon replaced with Longbow Tri-Cannon, a weapon system that fires a burst of three rounds.
- Ranger's Heavy Longbow Cannon replaced with Longbow Cluster, a weapon system that fires eight rounds in a scattershot fashion.

Reaper
- Reaper Flamer and Reaper Sequential added.
- Reaper Scourge Beam added.
- Reaper Omni Shield added.

Venturer

- Venturer's Light Mining Laser changed to Plasma Cutter, a variant that has a portion of its attack coming from damage over time.

Bug Fixes

Colossus

- Colossus' Condor Missiles renamed to Colossus Missiles.

Disruptor

- Disruptor's Repair Drones are named correctly when launched.

Hunter
- Hunter’s Syphon Drones are named correctly when launched.

Infiltrator

- Infiltrator's Mass Slug Thrower has a corrected DPS of 184.

Pioneer

- Fixed the missing Detect Buoy sphere for the Pioneer

Protector

- Protector's Syphon Drones are named correctly when launched.

Overseer

- Overseer's reverse boost effect now lasts an appropriate length of time.

Known Issues

– Ranger Tri-cannon and Cluster are temporarily locked out due to a late developing bug, these will be restored in the next patch.

– Capturing the third mine while CODA’s voiceover is playing in the Proving Grounds may prevent the enemy Destroyer from spawning. If this happens you will be unable to complete the Proving Grounds. To prevent this, wait until all voiceover is complete before capturing the third mine. This will be fixed in the next patch.

- The Reaper Scourge Beam is temporarily disabled while an issue is resolved. It will be restored in the next patch.

pro: fun little space combat game

con: management has a stick up their ♥♥♥, long matchmaking times that ALWAYS expands skill and server search (no matter what time of day you play or if you enabled other servers already).

6/10 - would get 24h ban for calling an idiot an idiot again for playing like a useless, unsupportive idiot who is wasting my time. but, officially, not recommending it because f-you management.

+ Gorgeous ship design and environments.
+ Compelling tactical gameplay, feels more team oriented then your average MOBA.
+ Games don't feel repetative.
+ Good balancing between styles.
+ Very atmospheric.
+ Lots of potential for further development.

- It is not uncommon to have someone get disconnected at match start.

First off, it´s actually a fun and pretty game.
But this game is so poorly programmed its nearly impossible to find a game and if you do so, it most likely freezes, laggs or someone in your team disconnects. I didn´t had these problems in the beginning, but since they just keep adding new Ships so you have something to grind its just getting worse. You have to wait about 5-10 min for a most likely inbalanced game.
About the Ship-Balancing itself: There is an insane amout of variaties its impossible to propaly balance them. They have cool mechanics but the hard combos arent really rewarding and you are better of playing an easy ship.

Try it if its free , but dont spent money on it until they fix their stuff

Like the game over all. Have had some fun in the battles , You do need too pick the ships you want carefully or you will get hammered . The other players are not going to let you slide. THe graphics have great detail . Could use a little more detailabout the ships . Like the armor rating of the ships , an there damage mittagation. Would like the up-grades to be accumlative and permaneant. As well as expirience points for the crew stats . Like the game . would allso like the taget range ships too have two settings , nuetral or combat . So you can messure the ship you pick in combat .

Very well balanced MoBA game. I have yet to find any imbalances other than player skill, but that simply comes down to playing the game.

Key: +++ = Perfect/ ++ = Very Good/ + = Okay/ - = Terrible

+++Combat & Balance
+++Graphics and optimization
+++Matchmaking and Rating System
++Currency System
+Quest Reward System
+Skill System & Cooldowns

- Most NVidia card holders crash for some odd reason, I pity the weak.

All in all, the game has shown me that If you plan to make a PvP Ship-To-Ship combat sim with resources and kind of an AoS feel, you can do it without making it rediculously imbalanced *Cough* League Of Legends *cough*.

Fractured Space has a great deal of depth and tactical complexity. A new player can pick up the basic mouse-and-keyboard commands after a few matches and yet a 100+ hour veteran can still find new tricks and tactics.

The recent change for ship acquisition makes the grind for new ships very manageable. New players can quickly pick up a decent cross section of ships, while leaving a few more expenive (and newer) ships as goals to pursue. The only purchaseable elements are purely cosmetic or means to bypass some of the unlock grind. Despite some reviews here this game is absolutely NOT pay-to-win.

The design team is very active in releasing new updates to the game. While some bugs and significant ship balance issues remain, as is typical for an alpha-stage game, the updates have largely been incrementally improving the game for the past year-and-a-half.

Key Features:
-Deep tactially spaceship combat
-Beautiful visuals (esp. for an alpha)
-Manageable unlock rate
-No PTW elements
-Active development team

Weaknesses:
-Some server lag and stability issues
-Growing, but currently limited, player base
-Ship balance still a work-in-progress

Verdict: Try it today! Fractured Space boasts massive spaceships, looks great, and it's FREE! There's nothing to lose and the game continues to grow, improve and evolve with every update.

Thought this game would suck, but it ended up being really fun and addicting. Not pay to win, and you have to wait a couple of min to find a match. However, the matchmaking is great and I have yet to be put in a laggy server.

Try. This. Game.

You'll be surprised at how good it is for a free game.

After playing for almost a year here, i finally got to make a Review about Fractured Space. So here goes:

Fractured Space is a space-MOBA game where you are given command of captial ships, some of which measure more than 2 kilometers in length. In a team of 5 players, you have to defend your home base and your mining stations from the 5 enemy ships in the ensuing massive and sometimes quite frame-costy skirmishes. Teamplay is everything here, unlike your average shooter you can't just say: "Oh, i got killed there, let's go into the other sector.". This might cost you a match, so if you are looking for a lone wolf style of gameplay, i have to warn you that Fractured Space will not often allow you to play like that. On the other side, if you like to have a team around you that you can (most of the time) count on, this is a game for you.
For a while, Fractured Space included 2 different game modes, a "Conquest" mode with a map divided into 2 Sectors, your base, the enemy base and the famous Gamma Sector, which will activate in intervalls, granting the team that conquers it a massive boost, and, with the 4th Gamma, access to the opponent's Home Base. Such access can also be gained by opening one of the enemy's froward stations, one in each sector. When the Home Base is fully capped, you win. Or lose depending on which base it was. Your average Conquest game takes about 30 minutes, so be sure to calculate a bit of time for it.
The other game mode that is currently locked was called "Frontline". It dropped the idea of a Gamma Station and different lanes, and instead went for a more FPS-style approach. An open map with lots of asteroids as cover, 3 mines to cap, jump points distributed all around the map allowing for quick surprise attacks, and a permanent death after 12 minutes of game time. The mode is locked right now and there is no info on when it will be reintroduced, if ever, we will have to wait for a longer time. The Devs are working on it though.
Not long ago, the game became free to play, which will hopefully increase the playerbase quite a bit. Although there are lots of buyable assets, it is not necessarily a pay to win game. In the coming updates, the game will move to Unreal Engine 4.1.1, which will drastically increase the stability of the game. Crashes are currently quite common for me, but there is an option to reconnect to the server. Also, expect lengthy waiting times while Matchmaking is looking for a server for you, but you have a small 2D game called "Fracturoid Extreme" that will help you make time pass. Or show you how horrible reflexes you have. Sounds hilarious? Maybe...But it is currently the only possible solution, as the playerbase is just too small, and it is just temporary I think.

So, what else to say? I would recommend the game to any fan of Battlestar Galactica instantly. The depth of the gameplay and big picture thinking is something unique, and the only comparable game named "Dreadnought" doesn't offer you this.

See you on the battlefield!

Pros:
  • Fun ship combat with some intricacy and nuance to it. Is usually fun but varies from ship to ship and player playstyle.
  • Two gamemodes, both decently fun.
  • You can buy all of the ships and modules with in-game currency earned for free.
  • The game's subreddit is fairly active and all the dev's are on it.
  • Huge selection of ships all focused on different things with different weaknesses.
  • Game is slow-paced, makes combat exciting and dramatic.

Cons:
  • Incredibly shallow matchmaking based on MMR system that a game this small just doesn't need.
  • Devs often work at a glacial pace. Black Widow sucked for months and the devs did nothing.
  • When the devs eventually buffed Black Widow, it can now 1v1 or 1v2 literally anything at any stage. Balanced, my ♥♥♥.
  • This game does not believe in a Reporting system so trolls are frequent in the lower MMR games.
  • $40 for two skins and a couple extra goodies is fair, right?
  • Just buy the collosus and enjoy being the best guy on the team.
  • There are premium ships that give you extra XP.
  • Money is earned fast but levelling takes a ridiculous amount of time even if you play well.
  • There are daily rewards for playing which award you... nothing of value! Enjoy the extra 200 DNA.
  • Crew system does not matter at all. Pick the robot or the cat for comedic relief and never touch it again.
  • When in close range combat often becomes "ram the enemy and hold down M1 to see if you win."

Overall, I don't recommend you play it for long, maybe download and play a couple hours. I want to like the game more, but the devs keep implementing things that are just mediocre and implementing skins. There is no single thing in this game that makes me want to say "It's great, download it!" The game is functional, it looks decent and plays decent with a couple concerns. That's about it. Just a game with some fun combat elements, a half-awake community and bad matchmaking. It's a solid 5/10.

Great game, my only complaint is how long it takes to find a multiplayer match.

This is a brilliant game, even in its Alpha state. I have played 2 online matches, each lasting half an hour, and they were well worth the time. The ships look amazing, as does the UI; they look and feel futuristic and as though you are actually flying a 1.5K long cruiser through the heat of battle.

The combat is much better than I hoped it would be. Now, I'm a massive sci-fi fan, but not necessarily a fan of MOBAs but the feel of the combat is slightly hectic at times and very immersive, paired with the beautiful graphics. I've been wanting a decent game that has a good command/tactical infastructure on a starship for a while, and now I've found one that ticks all the boxes for me.

It will be interesting what will be made of this game, and I fully recommend it.

I play this game infrequently, and I enjoy it very much whenever I do play it. This is one of the best free to play games I have ever played, and if you haven't played it yet, you need to.

I freakin' love this game!
I have been looking for years for something like this ... was greatly disappointed in Battlefleet Gothic, Star Conflict as well as a few others ... this is/was exactly what I was looking for!
Hell i even created tabletop games like this because I love the subject so much!
I can't wait to see where else this will go ... would love to perhaps see like a community warfare to conquer sectors or a free-to-fly and encounter/battle cosmos.

This Game is great, i played this before the update when ships used to cost thousands of XP and millions of credits. and it was still fun.

I really hope this game gets a bigger playerbase
