Do you like dating sims? No? Yes?

Well, that doesn't matter, because "Hatoful Boyfriend" is hilarious, and deserves a playthrough either way.

I know there's tons of reviews for this game already, so there's not much else I can say that everyone hasn't said before, but what I can say is that I walked in blind, and it ended up being one of my favorite games. It's a treasure with a surprising amount of (dark) meat hidden beneath its little avian heart.

You will get attached to the pidgeons. Even if they are popular otome game stereotypes, each one ends up having tons of heart. (Some much more than others--LOOKING AT YOU, CREEPY DOCTOR SHUU) My personal favorite routes were Ryouta and Nageki's, along with Yuuya. Still, there's something for everyone, with some of the routes becoming surprisingy poignant.

The translation, despite a few typos, is delightful, and the writing was very clearly done with love. Even if the art is quite literally stock photos of birds, don't let that dissaude you: It's actually a very well-made game.

The special route, the "Bad Boys' Love" Route, also deserves a mention, as it elevates the game from "fun gimmick" to "wow this is actually really well-done".

And for those who want more of the fun (and pain), the Christmas sequel, "Holiday Star", is a nice addition to the franchise. All in all, while I'd wait to get this game on sale in a combo pack with the sequel and some bonus material, it's worth a playthrough no matter what.

It's birdy-ful.

This game...Where should I start?
It is really unconventionnal for a otomegame.
It is an otome game just by name. The format is from an otome game.
But boy, this game is so much more.
It's not about pigeons and humans. It is way much more complicated.
I cannot tell much more without spoiling the game.
Just buy it, play it. You won't regret it.

Just, don't play at night if you are easily affraid and can easily have nightmares.

This has got to be the weirdest game I've ever played. I went in blind and I ended up getting killed by birds before the story had even properly gotten started. How do you get any of the endings WITHOUT using a guide to tell you what to do?

ETA: I have since played through the other endings of the game to get to the coveted "secret BBL ending". Although this route is definitely more fascinating than the rest of the game, the plot is very convoluted and did not leave me feeling like this game is worth it.

Would get my money back if I could.

The Pudding Is A Lie

My lady made me play this one. I did so on her account (hence the time played). She found all possible endings, some of which I witnessed; I personally completed just one playthrough. One was enough; thanks, Oko-san.

I'm now that much more acquainted with just how strange the realm of videogaming can be, though I'm not precisely elated at the advent of this hard won wisdom.

Dating sims are just odd to begin with, but Hato Moa & friends really tried hard to provide eyebrow-raising occasions. Gotta hand it to them, Hatoful Boyfriend is at times clever & laugh inducing - in the "what on god's green earth is happening here" kind of way.

If like me this caught your eye because it was published by Devolver Digital, just know it's easily their most "out there" title to date.

Against the prospect of preserving my already beleaguered sanity, they went & made a Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star Christmas-themed sequel..

Silly review for a silly game. Thumbs up & anyone who disagrees is a bird brain!

One of my favorite games! Or rather, one of my favorite stories. This is a visual novel and real, game-changing choices are limited: you will follow the tracks you pick like a choose-you-own-adventure book, with fairly limited endings. It's a great "book" though, and one I encourge you to read through!

It helps if you've played at least one "traditional" dating sim (or watched a harem anime) before. I think it might be more enjoyable if you know the tropes and character archtypes that are being played with here.

The "true" ending of the game is unlockable after completing romantic routes with the main dateable cast. I try not to talk about it with those who haven't played the game because it really is best to go into it unspoiled. It is a very intense story that will answer some questions about the setting. The main game plays with no worldbuilding, assuming you (as the character) have lived in the world your whole life and do not need the history of the bird world explained. The true end (titled "Hurtful Boyfriend" or "BBL") opens up and tells you (as the player) what's really going on. The whole truth, however, you'll need to discover for yourself, as information is given piece by suspensful piece as you realize how the characters are connected in a complex web that you probably won't expect.

I bought the original version of this game a few years before the steam release, at the recommendation of a friend who LUVED it. I only played a few routes on that version, but I liked it enough to purchase the updated version for sale here on steam. The steam release is an updated version of the original game with newly drawn graphics, higher quality pigeon pictures, and most importantly a smoother, easier to read text box. This version also includes a new side route to romance Azami. I think it says something that I happily bought this game twice.

Then, if you like the game and want more of this story, check out the sequel (Holiday Star), the manga side stories, and the drama CDS. None of which are essential to enjoying the game, but are also very enjoyable in their own right!

People laugh when I tell them to be careful when choosing the feathery object of their affections, lest they end up murdered for political reasons or as a head conserved in a lab jar.

They are weak.
They are fools.
They are the first to go.

(What an absolute masterpiece. Don't let anyone who's not played enough to get the BBL ending tell you otherwise.)

I brought this game as a joke, I started to play this game as a joke. I expected this game to be a joke. Pigeons flirting with me and me "falling in love" with them felt quite ♥♥♥♥ed up and soo ♥♥♥♥ing.... wrong...

I either ended up with a lump in my throat or seriously scared to sleep... ♥♥♥♥'s waay too dark

Made me feel so uneasy time to time. I can never look at birds the same again. Here I am pullling all-nighters in order to get a perfect achievement.

This game is definitely not for everyone.
