Update #13: Balancing changes

Hello, fellow wizards, it's been a while!

This new update features some balancing changes and a few minor bugfixes.

Some enemies such as Orcs or the new corrosive carrots were performing better than they should, so we have increased their threat value to compensate for that.

  • Wands of the new characters count towards unlocking Kraz, the Novice
  • Balancing:
    • Golem: Slightly increased threat value
    • Orcs: Slightly increased threat value
    • Green pepper: Increased threat value by 50% (!)
    • Red chili: Slightly increased threat value
    • Bone Shieldman: Slightly increased threat value. Reduced damage and health.
    • Bone Summoner: Increased threat value, increased spawn time.
    • Shaman: Reduced number of spawned carrots by 1 (3 carrots instead of 4)
    • Green slime: Increased threat value
  • Scavenge rooms: Increased number of items spawned by 1 on medium and big rooms (it should help in finding them on complex rooms).
  • Fixed main menu buttons sound.

For the console users out there, an update featuring all the new content and fixes should be available soon. Thank you for your patience :)

About This Game

Dungeon-Crawling First Person Shooting at its finest! Fast-paced combat! Dozens of perks, spells and enemies! Level ups! Random Dungeons! Traps! Badass bosses! Carrots! Ziggurat is the best combination of First Person Shooter and Rogue-LITE you have ever seen.

Become a neophyte sorcerer, and get ready for your rite of passage: Enter the labyrinth and face dangerous challenges to prove your worth and become a powerful wizard!

The game focuses on fast-paced first person shooting, with an old-school vibe, and updated handling and game mechanics. Dungeon crawling and RPG/Roguelike elements are added into the mix, resulting in a fun, challenging and varied game, with lots of content to discover.

Fight almighty bosses, get through rooms filled with traps, and treasures that may help you in your journey... Each game is a whole new experience!

Unlike most Rogue-thingies, on Ziggurat your combat skills will be the most important asset to keep advancing. Leveling up and randomly generated content is there to improve variety and make each game different, not to make the game a roll dice or an unbearable grind.

Most perks are designed to change the way you have to play or the weapons you'll want to use. Do you want more speed in exchange for less health, or maybe is better to have mana regeneration? Increase drop rate, or refill ammo here and now? No number game here, simple and direct choices.

We've also ensured that, as a proper FPS game, the experience is quick and direct. There's no inventory to manage or the need to compare two almost equal item drops, just weapon selection, and mana/health are usually the bargaining chip.

A whole arsenal of magic and alchemic weapons will be at your disposal. Wreak havoc among your enemies, but watch your mana reserves or you might regret it later!

Magic staves, spellbooks, magic wands... dozens of weapons with different attack strategies that help keeping the game fresh!

A delicious first-person "rogue-lite" developed and published by Milkstone Studios.

The Good
  • Great fast-paced shooty action in an interesting environment
  • Invokes the spirit of titles such as original Doom, and - more relevantly - Hexen and Heretic
  • Colourful neat graphics, decent sound effects and a likeable soundtrack that ties it all up nicely
  • Tons of unlockable very varied characters, weapons, amulets and level-up perks
  • Randomness! Each level is made up of preset room templates, but put together in a randomized way
  • Items you can "equip" are also randomly chosen and so are the perks you get during level up (not to mention randomly appearing room "mutators"!)
  • Not a single DLC and the devs are cool folks who add content with free updates <3

The Bad
  • Due to the limited amount of room templates after a several dozen playthroughs it can start to feel a bit same-y
  • Some characters might seem to heavily depend on lucking out with the upgrades (not necessarily bad thing, but I personally like to fail because *I* messed up, not because of a bad dice roll...)
  • The standard playthrough might feel a bit short
  • Some minor graphical quips (darn you, level 2 walls!)

The Verdict
  • Shining recommendation! If you like your shooters fast, full of circle-strafing, back-pedalling, precise aiming and filled with nasties you should definitely get this one. If on top of that, you like randomness instead of pre-set -- do not even hesitate! Either way, Ziggurat is, without question, a gaming gem!

ZIGGURAT IS:

_A great game mixed by rules of Binding of Isaac and Heretic&Hexen gameplay
_Unpredicable like the game above (You'll never know what will awaits you to the next room)
_Generously provided about the content
_Not so smooth sometimes (Some framerate drops)
_Counting plenty of characters, weapons, spells, items and creatures&bosses
_Randomly generated at each "new game"
_Much colored (Some like and some dislike)
_Eventful as hell, many events will randomize even more the game
_A fast-paced action game as you'll have to move constantly aswell shooting the monsters in same time
_Frustrating as a good Rogue-Like should be
_Punctuated by very fun moments
_Fair enough for the graphics and sounds
_The first video game (I guess) where Carrots are your worst nightmare xD YES Carrots xD

ZIGGURAT ISN'T:

_The best of this genre
_Boring (You'll always want to be back into there)
_Easy at all
_A game with huge story and background
_Counting only on your own skills, luck has its importance
_Designed badly
_Forgiving you on either way with its permanent death as usual on this kind of games!
_Some AAA title (Pure Spanish indie game)
_Devoid of traps and secrets
_An unicorn's universe, it's dark fantasy meeting the colors of World of Warcraft
_Calling for warriors, whichever the character you are gonna choose, you're a MAGE :D

Imagine Hexen and Binding of Isaac having a baby and you'll obtain Ziggurat, embrace your destiny in this mortal maze, will you making it to the end ? Truly a good and very fun game, i totally recommend it if you like this genre!

Global note:8/10
Difficulty on average & 100%:7,5/10

A roguelike RPG with well fast paced action. good graphics, and some cool tracks.
There are only 5 levels and one run can last anything from 30 minutes to 5 hours depending on your play style and luck.
The game starts out fairly simple at first, but gets harder as the game progress. Sometimes an entire room can be filled with fireball slinging enemies and you have nowhere to maneuver.
Bosses look pretty intimidating, but they're certainly fairer and easier to deal with than the random monster infested rooms.

There are an insane amount of unlockable equipment, perks, lore, etc. Lots are them are more powerful and useful depending on the enemies you can encounter in a run, but they spawn randomly.
There are also a lot of unlockable characters you can play as but you'll have to adjust your play style and speed according as each character usually have both strengths and weaknesses.
Secret rooms aid in survival so I recommend seeking them out in every floor.

A really fun game that can get addictive if you're hooked on unlocking stuff.

First-person shooter roguelikes are one of those things that sound awesome and obvious, but are actually incredibly difficult to do well. FPSes are built around carefully-crafted encounters where enemies can present interesting challenges for the player to overcome, so randomizing those elements leaves a lot of room for missteps. The developers behind Ziggurat somehow found a way to make it all work, and wrapped it up in a clean, colorful package that is almost impossible to put down.

The titular ziggurat is an ever-changing magical labyrinth that serves as the final (and potentially fatal) exam for your mage guild. Armed with only your trusty wand, you must descend through five sprawling floors of monsters and treasure to defeat the guardian and claim your place as a proper wizard. Defeating monsters (and exploring, on occasion) earns you experience that lets you pick a perk when you level up, which can range from a simple stat boost to a permanent mutator on your movement or attacks. There's a lot of space for different builds if you get the right cards, providing some welcome variety even on the same character. Even better then that there are a dozen different characters to unlock and choose from, each with even more dramatic differences right from the start.

And that's just your character! There's a huge assortment of weapons to find, spread across three different archetypes. You have spellbooks, which usually have short-range shotgun-style area effects, staves, which tend to be more accurate and rapid-fire, and alchemy, which covers all sorts of guns and grenades. Every level is guaranteed to have one random weapon and you can only hold one of each type, so a big part of the strategy is forming a complimentary arsenal out of your limited, randomized options. There are also amulets that provide powerful, sporadic effects, and shrines that can provide limited bonuses in exchange for certain sacrifices. The more you play, the more perks, weapons, and amulets get added to the pool, and after a dozen hours there's still plenty more for me to find.

So there's plenty of variety on your end, but what about the enemies? You'll encounter two dozen flavors of fanciful, murderous creatures on each run, as well as an assortment of challenging bosses. Pretty much any attack pattern you can imagine is represented, and enemy groups can be mixed all sorts of ways. Then there are champion monsters that are faster or have special auras, and room effects that boost EVERYONE'S damage or cause visual effects. Levels should take about 10 minutes each to finish, give or take depending on how much exploring you do. Part of that decision is going to be based on how you're holding up, because one bad combination of enemies can really mess you up... the rooms are all arena-style, so once you enter, you're not leaving until you wipe 'em all out.

With such a huge volume of content, Ziggurat is a shooter that can last you dozens of hours. The wide variety of characters, perks, weapons, and enemy groups to use them on will keep you busy for ages, and there are difficulty levels and daily challenges on top of all that. The bright, colorful fantasy graphics and rich sound are the perfect icing on this enormous cake. If modern roguelike Heretic sounds like a good time to you, and there's no reason it shouldn't, pick this one up as soon as you can.

Fast paced, fun never stops. Always manages to keep you on your toes while being, for the most part, very unstressful. Huge amount of unlocks (early and late game) that keep you coming back for more no matter what. Insane amount of replayability if you like roguelikes. A solid game with developers who care about their game. More or less a flawless game.
Now, the only gripe (and the reason I say add less alongside more), is that there is no melee weapon. I think the game would be greatly improved by the use of a sword (even as a 4th mana/weapon type). Being aggressive and in the enemies face rarely pays off, nor is it supposed to. But what if that was different? What if we redefined what exactly the Ziggurat is? What if we added swords?
I have emailed the devs about this, and they still have not added into the game.

entire thesis available on why swords should be a part of the Ziggurat at www.hoot.ie
