Despre acest joc

It is the end of summer. Han Hui, a university student, meets a mysterious young girl named He Jia in the mountains. After this chance meeting, the two embark on a delightful journey.

Shan Gui is a short, linear, kinetic visual-novel set in Nanjing's gorgeous Purple Mountain. It follows the adventure of two young girls as they tour the park, attempting to recount faded childhood memories. Han Hui is moody and depressed until she eventually becomes enraptured by He Jia's overwhelming warmth and happiness. In He Jia, Han Hui finds respite from her sadness and a brand new friend... a friend who may be more than she suggests.

A short game, but thoroughly enjoyable.

It took around 80 minutes to complete this visual novel. The art is high quality, and the writing is decent as well. Its soundtrack is a free DLC, and worth downloading. The badges and emoticons are also of quality. I'd certainly recommend Shan Gui to others, and I would definitely purchase another product from this developer.

There was a sequel hinted at and I'd buy that in a heartbeat, too.

Ever since the olden days that have slowly passed in the wake of the ever changing times summer still held a special meaning to them as they gazed as they gazed outside at the world often, spreading endlessly beyond the horizon which seemed to invite them to an adventure like none they have experienced before. Giving in to the impulse to find some relief under the blazing heat might just seem like a small annoyance while wandering around aimlessly, making the choice of turning back seem attractive enough to consider setting aside what one came for, not worrying about it anymore as the difficulty of modern life occupy the present once again. But as one takes a step forward from the sanctuary making them faintly wonder why they leave themselves, in the atmosphere undisturbed by anyone something pleasant might be there for them, as though awaiting their presence for a very long time.

It is quite the pleasant surprise that from the moment we start this novel a beautiful landscape spreads out before the eyes, from the open fields of a hill lined by trees on the side to forests covering trails and stone passages moving through the sights we are meant to see, with only the presence of nature around that makes it feel as if we are the only ones in the world. These photographic backgrounds are of much higher quality one would expect from an indie game like this one, though sadly the ones that show abandoned buildings ruin the atmosphere, as they ill fit to the place shown there which is a little distracting, even if not overly so. The artwork on the other hand is very well drawn, reminiscent of water colored painting with vivid colors covering the canvas that really depict the moments of this story quite nicely, with only the slightly strange looking eyelids standing out in a less than desirable way, thereby making the graphics satisfying to anyone.

Another great aspect of this game is its soundtrack made of atmospheric songs that play many different kind of instruments, a few being more prevailant while others less so, but notwithstanding their sometimes lacking impression due to their shortness it's still a collection of pretty nice tracks. The title track in particular is excellent to enjoy while relaxing in the shade of a tree, with perhaps a wind chime moving gently in the breeze on a late summer afternoon, until the time of parting despite our reluctance knowing this moment might come ever again. In that regard, its simplicity makes this a well composed album not far apart from other doujins.

It's also similar to Go Go Nippon in a way that Shan Gui also shows a less known side of a culture we rarely get to se with a hint of mystical presence that lends itself easily to the course of the story. Notwithstanding how all the reference to locations open up the relevant wikipedia page instead of introducing them on the spot like Overdrive's tour guides do, this is still a pleasant kinetic novel worth giving a chance to, as you might find something precious along the way you didn't expect to see.

In the end, after experiencing the last moments of a journey which transcends the boundary between this world and another where we feel at ease, it is sometimes difficult to tell if it really happened or it was nothing but an illusion. But sometimes, even if it seems to fade away despite our longing desire, that moment becomes the point where one finds themselves attracted to another, and through the passage of a single day experience the joy of a lifetime.

Now most probably downvote this game due to it's producer... I'm just going to say it, I do it cause this VN is bad. It is, really. It's low cost can't mark that this game is completely and utterly devoid of anything worth investing time in it.

Game is short, 40 minutes long. Here's it's plot: You are in the mountains to visit some place, meet girl, girl takes you around, you find place, drama, place magically changes, fanservice... the end. Reading that was probably more interesting than the ingame dialogue, cause I continuously felt myself not caring, losing interest or even going to get a drink keeping the game auto-running since I just couldn't bother with what was presented to me. Considering it's based on real locations, and you get a hotlink from time to time to get information about those locations, I can't help but feel this is just an advertisement about a mountain set in VN form for some reason, and then they decided to sell this advertisement rather than just given it away.

Featuring a 12-year old (nobody told the artist) "sucking hard" a popsticle, who calls you sis out of the blue and well, guess what, you're suddenly sisters at the end for whatever reason a guy with one-frame called 'man' who talks about your fathers funeral then suggests you should talk to him again, another undrawn 'man' (actually has a name, but hey, who cares, lets call him man instead too!) who tells you you're an idiot for meeting a god then totally believes you next line even if you said nothing at all.
Let's not forgot about the girl having creepy triangle eyes and the also stupid "this national park might be totally dangerous, you might die, you might need a 12-year old girl to guard you... also, there's literally no animal or human life in this park at all. I guess you might die of boredome though."

The art isn't particularly great, so you don't need to do it for that either. I can't think of a single thing this VN does right.
(EDIT: You could 100% it's achievs in 5 minutes if that's the sort of thing you're interested in. I guess that's a pro... somewhat. Not that I really understand people buying games just for that)

I recommend not buying this game until the original developers regain ownership seeing as they were the ones actually working on the game & doing the updates. So there probably won't be any updates or support from now on.

Game has nice art/graphics but the story is a little short. Has an open ending which may lead into further story if the devs get ownership back.

Shan Gui is a short-ish, but beautiful Visual Novel. The story is sweet and cute, and two main characters are fully voiced, which certainly adds to its appeal.

However, Shan Gui has no dialogue choices or multiple endings one might except from a VN, although in its case it is sort of fitting, and I can’t think of any place where I would’ve changed the story. But those who don’t mind the lack of interactivity will be rewarded with a beautiful story.

A charming indie addition to the Steam VN library.

It's a small package, clocking in at under 2 hours, which is acceptable given the price point of $5. Bear in mind that this is a static VN, without gameplay or decision-making, simply a story to experience. It's up to your discretion if the price of content justifies a purchase. I can say that those two hours are well spent.

Criticisms primarily pertain to elements of the voiceacting. You may want to adjust the sound settings in option and turn the music down a bit, as both of the VAs are, for the most part, very quiet, and the music may drown out their performances. Furthermore, the protagonist is consistently lacking any sort of enthusiasm; in comparison, her new friend, while similarly quiet, has moments of excitement suited to the demeanour of a child, and when she sings it's a delight. That said, the voiceacting is more often a benefit than a detractor to the experience. Auto-scrolling is perfectly timed to the voice acting.

Perhaps some of the cultural specifics of the region could have been conveyed better through dialogue. Links are provided to articles as aids to understanding the region, its history and various mythological concepts. They're okay to thumb through upon invitation, but not seemingly necessary for enjoyment of the experience.

The UI is standard, perfectly functional, and requires no introduction. I recommend the use of Quick Saves to allow the story to continue to flow.

The settings are beautiful and excellent captures of the Chinese landscapes. Your mileage may vary with the characters and hand-drawn scenes themselves, but transitions allow both sides of the visual coin to compliment one another. The descriptive writing also helps the user fill in any blanks, creating a general sense of tranquility that goes hand in hand with a visual tour of Purple Mountain. The English translation is competent enough to carry that sense across to English readers.

I do not feel the plot is anything to write home about; it is a modest story, as the author says. However, it is a product of love, a captivating experience, a simple journey and an look at a new world for many of us; it's about seeing the beauty in everything.

I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of visual novels in particular. If anything here piqued your interest, you should read it too. It requires little investment of time and money and the experience is captivating.

For a travel guide, the sexual tension is pretty impressive!

Shan Gui is a really short visual novel (a visual short story maybe?) with lush artwork and beautiful music. Beautifully voiced entirely in Chinese, the translation isn't perfect but it isn't so bad that it becomes a distraction. The story is simple and engaging, and I thought it was interesting that the game actually links to wikipedia entries on the actual locations and lore mentioned in the story. I do use "game" in a loose sense here, because this is definitely more of a novel than a game. There aren't choices to be made, you just click to progress the dialogue through the linear story.

For the completionists, Shan Gui has strong Steam integration with super easy achievements and a game that can be completed in a very short amount of time. I didn't actually see the short story and lack of replayability as a bad thing, but I got the game deeply discounted and I feel like the content was worth what I spent. The extras include a gallery of the gorgeous artwork found in the game, as well as the soundtrack.

Shan Gui does really feel a bit like a travel and cultural guide though. With more panties and larger boobs.
