I purchased this to help make my life easier when making level art.

I use the Open Source "Tiled" editor to make levels which I then use in games using LibGDX, and from early testing this seems to work very well. Making the production of tiles for a level an absolute doddle. (im a programmer, not an artist so that a pretty big deal). Its allowing me to make my own tile sets instead of using ones I download or pay for from other sources, which in my eyes is priceless.

Its still actively being developed by a developer who is very active on these forums. I have sent and received multiple messages to and from them and in all of them they have been very open and accepting of ideas that could improve the product.

So, I recommend this to anyone who wants to make the process of making tiles that much easier. And even more to those who are willing to give constructive feedback.

Useful to help generate tilesets to be used in 2D Unity games, I simply can't make these on my own. This application and Unity plugin allow me to create a good looking 2d environment in minuites.

I've done a full video review and testing of this product with Unity, available at: http://youtu.be/YIr-hsIh8WM

Amazing little tool, that will help me a lot creating my own games! I'm happy having bought this on Steam (special because Steam shop now also works in Brazil). There are still some improvements that could be made, but in general Autotilegen is already very useful.

+ makes tileset creation fun and easy
+ is stable
+ works on linux

- not much I could complain about right now

Some people complain about the price, but for me it still is ok. Most creative tools cost much more. In the end, if
you use the software for making games, that you sell, you can earn money with it.

I want to like this but I just can't.
It's a fantastic idea, and could potentially save people a long time on atleast setting up there tiles. But I'm not going to recommend this to anyone.

Firstly, why use this odd custom window/layout type graphic. I don't see it in any other Pixel related software and that's a good thing. It hasn't made it look any better than the normal windows do so why have it?
In the end it just makes it harder to use because nothing is familiar. It looks cheap, like the type of computer software that would come with a family camera. I take one look at it and become exhausted.

Secondly $25 for an auto tiler? It's not even very good pixel art software in the first place, Most people would be better off making the art in Photoshop or GraphicsGale then exporting it to this because nobody is going to be making their art on it. Not to mention GraphicsGale is $5 cheaper.

And lastly, I can imagine that once you're done with your tileset you will be exporting it back into your pixelart software because the tiles you end up will never be perfect. When you have some magic software doing all the work for you it will show, so you will most likely need to do some touchups in the end.

If you are serious about making games you won't use this, maybe for prototyping (if you can be bothered with the weird layout and graphics they have used) but you will always be better off making the art yourself by hand. and not for $25.
"Tileset Maker version 2.0" is free and has a few features that will help you out with the tiling process.

Application is currently being tested... I will update this review as the application is being developed.

REVIEW UPDATED FOR: 1.5.1

This review was slightly modified after speaking with the developer. It has been modified to showcase the support and the desire to make the application better which in my eyes is very admirable. However, my review will remain accurate in the applications usage.

If you are the type of person that values legitimate reviews I would strongly suggest reading my review. I also recommend that you be careful of other "reviews" as some of them just tell you what the developer tells you. My review is based on usage only and I will not regurgitate what you see on the store or home page(s).

I purchased this for usage with Game Maker Studio (Master Collection). If you to are a developer that wants to use this with Game Maker as well, I recommend you to read this.

*** PROS ***

- Simple to use, not many options.

- Very quick and easy way to make tileable, seamless tilesets

- Outstanding support from the developer. Being a single one man team, he was very quick to reply to my review. Not only that, he is more than willing to work with the community to make this application better. Furthermore, I'm glad I made the original review to not recommend this as I believe it has made a difference in it's development. Not only for me to use personally, but to increase the value for other users purchasing it as well.

*** CONS ***

- No proper "save as" feature, looks like it just overwrites the previous tileset you made previously. I will requesting a proper save as feature as it is somewhat of a standard feature of any application.

- Tileset that is exported is NOT GAME MAKER FRIENDLY as it doesn't create the tile cushion that is required for GM tilesets. This becomes an issue while changing screen resolutions and creating ports of your game (black boarders around your tiles in-game).

- Price is to high, I would not recommend paying more than $9.99-$14.99 for this.

- Tileset export is still somewhat mashed together, not sure what parts go where. This will be better explained in the documentation soon according to the developer.

- There's is suppose to be some sort of AutoTileSet Plugin or something of that nature for Game Maker but I can't seem to find it if it exists. I will ask the developer about this.

Although there are short comings that still remain in this aplication as of version 1.5.1, I can now recommend it. Mainly due to the fact that version 1.5 was the launch version and the developer quickly (in a single day) fixed about 50% of the problems that was in my original review.

Great job on the update. I can't wait for future updates

Pros:
This tool works well for quickly generating tile sets.
Tilesets are fairly adjustable by only changing a few options with the application.

Cons:
When using AutoTileSet Plugin with Unity the tiles that it drops cause a massive amount of extra compilation time.
When using AutoTileSet Plugin with Unity if you accidentally click on any sprite it will instantly destroy the object.
No viable method of generating "Floor" sprites and using them with AutoTileSet Plugin in Unity.
Application feels kind of sluggish while actually using it.
GUI elements all feel a bit off.

This is a GREAT idea - but...
...the execution is a little sloppy.
EDIT - it's Much Nicer now! - well done on the upgrade Mr Programmer!
Comments below no longer apply - however i'll leave them so you can see how well this tool developed :)

The tile-editing tools are too limited with no basic line/box/circle drawing functions or even a complete erase function (just a single pixel white-out).
However - the creator has already made quite a few improvements adding Undo options and such - so I believe I will recommend this tool as it keeps improving.

But please Mr programmer - make it a bit more user-friendly! I'd especially like to see better editing tools and also - the menu system seems a bit hard to understand.

Just to confirm - this IS a Good Product - it just needs a little polishing :)

Quite easily the worst program I have ever used to make a tileset. The program does not allow you to set your own tile size, and edges have to share space in an image. What does this mean? It means if you have, say, hanging vines that go further down than halfway across the tile, they will be chopped off, and part of the vine will appear on the bottom tile, regardless of whatever is in the middle.

Lighting normals are only useful in programs that actually implement them, and are limited to very few shapes. Most games won't use or need this feature, anyway.

When I tried to save my tileset, clicking on the save button gave me a message saying the sheet had been saved, but it did not ask me where I wanted to save. There are also buttons that have no clear indication of what they do based on their icons and have no labels; your only hope is to find the tooltip button and turn them on, as they are not on by default (the button looks like a lightbulb in some screens and a raindrop in others).

The developer seems more interested in creating a fancy interface than a useful program, as every button and screen transition is animated, and you can't change the window size. Since it automatically stretches to fit the screen, not taking into account the size of the window bar, that means there's constantly a piece of the window hidden under your task bar, as Windows doesn't allow a window to be placed even a few pixels above the screen.

Probably the worst part of this is the price. I payed 25$ for it, and now the price has gone up since then. There's no trial version, so if you don't like it, you're screwed. I recommend Aseprite instead, but if you don't feel like paying 10$ for software that actually works, MS Paint works fine, too; it just doesn't have the fancy features.

I've been looking for a tool like this for quite a while. AutoTileGen streamlines the process of generating all of the variations for your tilesets, creating corner tiles, angled tiles, and side tiles quickly. With built in pixel editing, normal mapping and the ability to change the amount of blending for your tiles this is one tool you won't want to miss for tileset editing!
