Heroes of Issachar is a city-builder / FPS hybrid. This game takes everything you love about classic city-builders and puts a crossbow in your hand to defend the kingdom you have built and extinguish the enemy from the land by raising up an army and recruiting other heroes to join the fight.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Because the game is a hybrid of city building and FPS, I am essentially building two games in one. Blending those together will require decisions as to what elements of each to focus on and which to pare down as unnecessary or undesirable. The gaming community is the best source of feedback for that.

In short - I've got tons of different ideas to try out, but I want to make what you all think is fun and works.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“That really depends on what features the community wants. I am the sole developer, and I am not relying on this game to support myself. It is a passion project for me, so that means I will work on it for as long as it takes to realize the vision and get it right.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The early access version will contain the basic elements of both the city builder and combat, but the final version will be the fully developed game.

The major addition I anticipate for full release is Survival mode, which sidesteps the story and drops the player into the middle of the land with just a few resources and men, and it will be the player's job to survive and build a flourishing city in a massive open world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“There are three provinces ready to go, two of which the player can begin building up once liberated. There are eight bad guys, some in better shape than others. Several special abilities and crossbow parts (this number is constantly changing, usually increasing), and one dungeon are playable. The Knight hero and Wizard hero are both ready, each have one special ability. A first draft of Survival Mode is expected late '16 early '17.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The only price difference will be between the Developer's Edition and the Standard Edition. The explanation for the difference can be found on the Dev Edition page, but the basic difference is that Dev Edition will get access to all of the ideas I'm kicking around, before they make it into the standard edition, along with some aesthetic perks for supporting the development of the game. However, no core features that make it into the actual game will be withheld from the standard edition.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The forums have been the best place to get a dialogue going, so that will be the primary location to get community input.”

v1.55 - Brimley!

v1.55 is live - the major addition is that Brimley is now available for play in all versions of the game. There is a link at the main menu to jump straight into a game.

Brimley is the game of choice in Issachar - a dice game played head to head using a set of dice ranging from d4 to d100.

The other fixes are tweaks to Rapid Shot and Focused Shot. You can now collect enough Black Lotus in the Argent Coast to purchase Rapid Shot for use on Tranask Island.

Most of my time is being spent on getting the open world survival mode ready. So far the base map is created and a test dungeon is working. Currently, walking straight across the longest part of the map would take 4 real world hours, which is a pretty big map I think. For now though, I'm focused on a very small section of it to get that working really well.

More updates to come when I've got them!

v1.54.3 - Developer's Edition update

For those of you with the Dev Edition, there's a new menu item: Brimley!

Brimley is the game of choice in the land of Issachar. A version of this was in a build a long while back, but it has been updated and as far as I can tell, it is running very smoothly. This version's UI isn't prettied up yet, and there are a few aesthetic tweaks I intend to make (mostly with the opponent's dice). So give it a go and let me know what you think!

A fix in this version is the sky and clouds in Argent Coast. I think it's looking pretty sweet now. There are still some sorting order issues, so I'm working on those.

Adds:
Brimley (Dev Edition)

Fixes:
Sky in Argent Coast
Texture resolutions increased for some objects

About This Game

About

Heroes of Issachar is a shooter meshed with a city-builder. It has everything you love about RPG's – loot, levels and action. But instead of level grinding, you will rid the land of evil, one province at a time. To do this, you must combine your skill in combat with your ability to build a city capable of withstanding the enemy's assault and launching an attack on the enemy stronghold itself.

Features

Gameplay consists of two main perspectives: FPS and city-building. There are dungeons to crawl and loot to procure, but the core gameplay comes during the city-building. As you rebuild the cities in each province, the enemy will not make it easy. You must construct your city so that it not only flourishes, but is well defended. Success requires not only a savvy mind for strategy, but skill with your crossbow to cut down the enemy before they reach your walls.

You will not be questing alone. As you travel throughout the land, you will rescue people who have been taken by the evil forces in the land. When you rescue them, they will be available to add to your party, or to reside in the main castle where their particular talents will aid your journey outside of combat. Fans of the Suikoden series will quickly recognize its influence on Heroes of Issachar.

Combat

The action takes place as a first person shooter. Your signature weapon is a crossbow. Throughout the game, you will modify the crossbow, exchanging parts for new ones that confer a benefit to your skill and damage. In addition, there are mounting points for frost cannons, fireball launchers, magic shields, and many more add-ons. How you outfit your crossbow depends on you.

In addition to your crossbow, you will have a magic gauntlet that augments your skills. Different gems enhance different abilities, like speed, jumping, and even gliding. Other gems allow special skills like teleport and invisibility. Between the gauntlet and crossbow, you have the freedom to customize your combat in almost countless ways.

Story

The year is 1694. Your sister, a missionary to Africa, has gone missing there. You travel to her last known location to find a cave that leads to a world unlike anything you could imagine. The game picks up upon your arrival in the land of Issachar. Your mission is to find your sister and return home. But the land is filled with evil. To find your sister, you have no choice but to help eradicate the enemy forces that hinder your search. Explore the mysteries hidden in the land of Issachar. Discover the impact your sister's faith has upon the land and you. As the player, you interact with the story the way you want. Build your cities as paragons of law or hives of villainy. There is no method with advantages or disadvantages.
