This game is addicting. I thought it would be trashy due to the reviews but it really is good. I don't think it should have the opening video introducing the video because I almost lost intest right there

In short -
Dead Bits isn't as bad as people are reviewing it, at least in my opinion. It does have a fair few flaws, and it is pretty buggy in some points, but I still wouldn't call it BAD.

PROs -
  • Multiple guns to use, all of which have situational use.
  • Nine maps, with a range of enemies.
  • A mix of exploration and combat.
  • A well created soundtrack, although not my taste, personally.
  • At intense times, Slow Motion is used.
  • In the later levels, actual challenge was posed; I contemplated cheating multiple times.

CONs -
  • Multiple bugs, ways to get out of the map, or die for no reason. I had to reload multiple times and my computer even crashed once.
  • Some points it is TOO challenging and not in a fun way. You end up having to try over and over, and it gets repetitive and annoying,
  • Some of the later zombies are basically reskins, with little change and not much to distinguish them. No special abilities, or actual battle changes.
  • The guns do not have ammo.

    Seriously.

You don't reload, you don't ever need to stop shooting. That's just stupid.

Thank you to AccidentallyReviewed for giving me this game free. They have hundreds of games that they give away to members of their group, join if you want free games.

Also thanks to PedroPlayz for playing the game with me to help give some pros and cons.

I give Dead Bits a solid 6/10. It's not that much money, so I'd recommend picking this up and playing for a couple hours of pseudo-fun.

Great indie game, was really suprised by the high quality. The game takes a couple of solid hours to beat and theres only 9 levels but was worth every minute (is that even a thing lmao). The game is a cross platformer and FPS kinda game where you jump over obstacle courses while shotting the ♥♥♥♥ out of aliens made of.. uh blocks?? This little game has a unique concept and is really worth playing imo. I especially love the slow motion effect after you clear a wave or defeat a boss that gives you that extra sence of victory! Amazing soundtrack especially if your into dubstep like music. Graphics really do look top notch too! The best thing is tho that it was all made by one guy (the soundtrack, models, EVERYTHIGN!!). After i beat the game (the last level was very well thought out) i was greeted with the creds screen, some dudes name and then "Thank you for playing" im like wtf the guy did it all by himself?? So yeah congrats to you sir for making such a cool game.

9.5/10

EDIT: I honestly dont see what the hassle is about, loads of people find the game awful and not even explain why??? I honestly find it a really fun game!! Some "blocky graphics" well its an art style like pixel art and many others, i wouldnt hate a pixel art game coz it looks like it was made in the 90s just for the reason of it being pixely?? Why do poeple expect all games to be life like realistic when its fine to have some surreal art styles too, like take minecraft for example. Look at the review section and the negative ones have a couple ones hovewever the in depth reviews usually have a positive rating, so the game cant be all that bad, i know it aint perfect but its far from awful!

A downside that a must admit is true is the lack of a pause feature. Pressing ESC does nothing to pause the game except bring a small menu up, also i would like to see the addition of mouse scvroll wheel weapon switching.

Terrible. With keyboard and mouse, I found myself getting a headache from being motion sick. A gamepad actually works (same as for keyboard), but only in place of arrow keys, shooting, & jumping. For aiming / looking around / turning, you have to use the mouse. If it had full controller support, it might have been mildly entertaining. Seems like a first-time game attempt as a hobby or college level school project.

Pros:
[+] At least the music is better than the game itself.

Cons:
[-] Even while not on the edge of the stage, the game suddenly decides that you'll fall of the stage after walking on a small crevice.
[-] Cheap levels
[-] Horrible FOV
[-] Ugly blocky graphics
[-] No checkpoints

Sometimes I wonder how games got greenlit..

This game is good, and not short so you have to play with this game if you want to see end of the game. And the game is hard so you have to be skillful.
I don't know why too much negative recommends.
And you can get trading cards.

This game handles very poorly.

It is extremely repetative and overall lack luster in design.

Pause, doesnt work. Yeah I know that the game doesnt call it 'pause' per say...regardless
you press the menu button and it freezes your mouse aiming. You can still strafe left and right, forward and back
and Zombies can still attack you.

Speaking of ZOMBIES, WTF!
Seriously, the game opens with you being abducted by aliens, and then suddenly: zombies...
There is an explanation to this... a very weak one mind you...

Speaking of Weak,
The First gun, the uzi, SMG thing, is a pea shooter. It is worthless. Id only recommend using it if you have no other option.

There is no ammunition, guns fire infinitely, which I think kills any depth or complexity this game may have.
and there are jarring inconsistencies with the game's design.

The most notable being the starting platform.
It's textured and I guess it is supposed to resemble water. But everything else is just blocks.
There is the particle effect that marks the end of the level which is like a steam kind of effect, which is an outlineless gradient and clashes. The bat is a chrome textured Cylinder again, it clashes with the block style of the game.

The fonts are a minor issue, but they too do not really gel with the design style.

Convenyance is an issue.

Let me ask,

If the goal is to kill all the enemies, why cant the level just end when I kill the enemies?
That would make more sense than walking to an arbitrary spot... Ill tell ya that much.

Why is it that in level 3, I dont have to kill all the enemies, but in seemingly every other level I do?

Why is the HP indicator just a number?
I actually didnt notice any HP at all, and seeing as many FPS games go without Health guages I just assumed this was one of them.

The health packs look like red rubics cubes and do not indicate that they heal you. There isnt even a cliche white cross on it.
There isnt a pop up saying "Health restored" Nothing!

Collision detection is buggy. Occasionally zombies seem to be able to hit me from quite far away.
Conversely, the Bat seems to be able to reach further than feels natural.

Turning is a problem, the all green zombies which run at you can get into your blind spot and because you turn so slow
they can remain out of reach indefinitely

This game shouldnt be sold, and I say this without malice.
This is just extremely shoddy design and it isnt even comparable to many free titles you can find...

Introduction

Dead Bits is a colorful first person shooter which features environments and enemies, which are made out blocks. It is about a creature named Quilly who is abducted by an alien and has to fight hoards of blocky enemies to regain his freedom.

The game features nine unique levels which all provide unique challenges. This may sound like if the game is a little bit short and it indeed is. I managed to finish everything in two hours and some people can certainly do it even faster. Although the levels lack in quantity, their quality makes up for it. Every level is very distinct from one another, so no level feels the same. Although they provide variety in challenges and difficulty, they are fairly linear, so there is no point in exploring them.

There are four weapons in this game, a submachine gun, a shotgun, a bat and an alien blaster. They come with unlimited ammunition and no reloads, but are otherwise pretty basic. Shooting is not the only thing you do in this game, though, there is also an emphasis on platforming. For the most part it handles pretty well and the levels are designed with that in mind, but sometimes the jumping can be slightly delayed and Quilly is unaffected by moving platforms so these have to be handled with caution.

The graphics are very simple by the nature of the pixelated blocks, it still looks fine though especially with added lighting effects on higher settings.
This game is accompanied by a dubstep soundtrack which cues in and out depending on level progression, and every level features one or more distinct songs.

Pros

+ Nice difficulty curve
+ Smooth and stable gameplay with no glitches
+ Pretty lighting effects
+ Very high variation in level themes
+ Large soundtrack

Cons

- Platforming can be a bit awkward
- Very short
- No pause feature
- Linear level design

Conclusion

Dead Pixels is a basic game, which does nothing new in the FPS genre, but is crafted pretty competently, so that the gameplay is still enjoyable. With the low asking price of 0.99 USD in mind this game can be recommended for someone who wants a short distraction from life.

An awful game to play featuring:
-Forgettable story
-Ugly and sloppy level and character design
-Easy to kill opponnents
-Easy to fall from platforms which at least provides a challenge

I got It for free and it drops trading cards and it really isn't the worst Microblast Games has to offer so I'll give it a pity thumb up but if you intend to actually spend money on it don't. Just don't. One of the worst fps you could possibly download. The first quake looks and plays better than this 2014 game. So better spend your money on a 90's videogame than on this. All you'll get from playing it aside from trading cards is dead bits in your grey matter.

Clunky game with weird graphics. Gameplay sucks, cause every next level getting bigger and not allowing you to make any mistake.
Not saving my progress...
being constantly given for free...

Only good thing is that dubstep kind music here that is catchy.

I found this game... interesting. It feels like a demo/proof of concept rather than a game. There's an immediate sense of desolation when you start playing. As if waking from a dream of hope and anticipation and being bludgeoned concious by the harsh reality that those screenshots you see up there are the cream of the crop. It's fun in the way of "can I make this jump without falling" and "how many badly rendered enemies can I destroy". This engagement soon runs dry in its flavor, and I find myself thinking that it's time to play a browser based flash game, but for but a moment, dead bits does achieve an innocent charm. It's not painful to play nor is it graphically distasteful... it just lacks ambiant content and personality depth.

you know how game making kits come with tutorials? you know, the ones that help you slowly put together a game using basic code and free assets? dead bits feels like a game made from some of those tutorials, which might explain why it's so awful.

bloody hell, where to start? everything that could go wrong has done so in this game. it's a game where your health is measured with a single number.
to begin with, it looks awful. bright colours thrown onto squares, and the devs claim it's "pixellated". no doubt this is riding on the minecraft bandwagon, but if you're going to copy something popular, copy it right. at least minecraft has consistency and a colour pallet that doesn't make one want to cry.

the story is practically non-existant. a guy gets kidnapped by aliens and has to do tests. there's really nothing to say, asides from the fact that you're at least making super mario brothers jealous in terms of writing.

the gameplay is bare bones and entirely uninteresting. in my playtime i found three weapons; a shotgun, a machine gun (both of which i'm willing to bet are free assets based on how they don't look anything like the rest of the game's art style - or lack thereof), and what i'm guessing is supposed to be a metal pipe, but in reality is an untextured bar. none of them have any interesting functions, any ways to modify them, or even a bloody ammo counter. just hold down lmb and watch in amazement as your horrid pixellated block monster "enemies" shatter into fragments.

on the subject of enemies, they're a joke. they walk towards you. that's it. they don't try to dodge and their only attack is walking into you, which does as much damage as either a ping-pong ball or a bowling ball. what enemy deals how much damage is up to chance. some do this really weird bullet time effect that slows down the game and places a grayscale filter over the screen, which becomes obnoxious after one showing. they're also able to walk across gaps because i don't know video games??????

the level design is... jesus christ. whether it's hallways of enemies or obstacle courses where almost everything is a one-hit-kill, you're guaranteed to have fun! and by fun, i mean murderous impulses. levels four and five in particular are laughing stocks; long tunnels stuffed to the brim with enemies one can kill in a single hit. it's boring as hell.
hey, developers, filling rooms with the same enemies one has killed before does not make the game harder, it makes things more irritating. how about you develop an enemy with a unique attack? and just to let you know, levitation does not count. sorry.

in short, this thing is an atrocity. it's amusing for five-ten minutes tops just from how shockingly bad everything is, but after that it leaves a horrid taste in your mouth, like when you drink a coke and there's that awful aftertaste that lingers for a while; you know what i mean.

also, ♥♥♥♥ you, merie. :^)
