Reviews

“The Beginner's Guide is one of the most daring and creative commercial games to come out in a good long while...a masterclass in character-driven storytelling.”
Eurogamer

“Few game developers have ever ventured such an open-hearted project about human frailty – and knocked it out of orbit.”
The Washington Post

“I've been thinking about this game a lot for the past 36 hours. It demanded I think about it, at first only superficially, but later more substantively. I mulled over a lot of questions when I should have been sleeping. I continued thinking right when I woke up. I think I dreamed about it in between.”

When I got this game from the humble bundle my expectations were low. Looked like some weird indie game.
I did some research and found out it was made by the guy who made the stanley parable, a game I enjoyed a lot.
I just have to say that this game blew my expectations out of the water. This game is a must play IMO. I loved it.

This isn't a game. This is a story. This is an experience, this is some abstract project meant to project emotion and show the folly of trying to understand something you just cannot understand and the impact it can have. This game tears you apart as it tears itself apart and you can't help but feel some kind of remorse or guilt even though you're just the player. An incredible interective story, a true landmark in the interactive story genre. Keep creating these masterpieces and keep destroying people's understanding on what games truly are.

This is, without question, one of the best games i've played.

When a game makes you reflect on everything you've done, And question all of it...
...It leaves a remarkable imprint in your mind.

I've been stuck in a bad place for a few months now. And going into this game, I didn't expect much.
But i feel that it's helped me, at least slightly.

I know that might sound like i'm being over-dramatic, But i'm sincere.
This game helped me. I can't say much without spoiling it.

I got this game from a Humble Bundle. I want to pay full price for it.
This game is beyond anything i've played, And you need to play it.

It's worth the money, It's worth your time: Go.

I keep coming back to this game.
It's so deep, so emotional, so intriguing, so sincere... One of my favorite games and stories altogether.

I would love to see more games like this one.

THIS is "not worth asking the price"?
THIS is... "JUST a story"?

You don't say that to someone who shared his dearest thoughts to you in private. You don't say: "Hey, you're just normal, you actually have quite an average problem with some quirks, so I'm not interested in your version of it, can you please calm down and act normal? Come on. Add some secret story, some achievements... I want to feel like you're a game. You're not what I signed up for."

Would you say that to your partner, too? When he's troubled?

Such a beautiful and well-thought LACK OF DETAILS.
Such a wonderful sound design.

I'm in love. I'm so much in love.

I'm a writer, it's what I do. I write horror stories, I exploit the emotions I think of to their extremes, I write happy stories... Everything... But, of all my horror stories, of all the fears that I've made, that I've written... This is... I can't have written this, and now I'm scared, because this is the first time I've been given something that I find truly horrifying... It feels like this is everything my writting has led up to, everything, and Davey's written it for me and now I feel scared that I've been a monster. I'm going out to find some friends that I've done this to, and I'm going to make sure.

Thanks Davey, I mean it. This is something I hope I haven't done before, and I'm on a tear to find out.

This isn't a 'game.'

If you can get past that, the experience is well worth it. I found it more emotionally impactful and thought provoking than any movie/tv show I've seen recently. Make sure you have a solid hour and half to get through it, though. I made the mistake of launching for the first time at 1AM and couldn't put it down until it was over.

Any of the down-votes you see are basically because people failed to read the game's description.

I have to say, I really, really enjoyed playing through this game. I wish it was longer- but, that being said, it is of such quality and contains such great amounts of content, I found it hard to believe it only lasted about 90 minutes.

I am going to continue talking about the game, but highly recommend you just dive in without reading too much into it.

This game is a set of games made by a single developer, none of which were released. A narrator walks you through small projects, and attempts to explain the creation of them. This is how the story unfolds, by changing emotions portrayed through the atmosphere of the various games you play.

The narration through this is really quite incredible. In fact, everything ties itself together very well into a cohesive story, even though you are in drastically different games throughout your playthrough.

Perhaps a little too well, even. But, I'm going to continue telling myself that it's a true story, regardless.

There is also a very good representation of timelines, as the games improve in quality over time. Overall, everything was just really well done, and very well polished.

I can't remember how much I paid for this game, perhaps I paid full price, perhaps it was through some bundle somewhere. Regardless, it was definitely worth it.

I played through this, not really knowing anything or expecting anything particular.

I feel like I was violated and violated someone or something in return.
I cried so much. This game is part me and probably part you.

I showered while sitting on the floor afterwards. I thought I was done crying.
I'm not.

This is a difficult game to review because, without giving too much away, at its core it is about critiques and meta and the story behind games.

I will say, without a doubt, people who say it's not a game are wrong. It's a different kind of game. You have little influence and choice, it's more a story you're along for the ride for. The idea is probably a little ironic if you've played The Stanley Parable. In the truest sense, it is the narrator saying "this is my story and this is how it goes and we've got to get to the end I prepared and it will be so good". I don't mean that as a critique! It's just that, in a way, the games are an antithesis to each other, and if you think about the end a bit, maybe they're meant to be.

The game does share a meta look at gaming, so if that's your thing you'll find it in bunches and I wholly recommend you try it.

It's going to be a hit or miss with people depending on how they feel about the end. If people feel the journey was worth it, or if they didn't. That's vague to say, but really, what determines if the game was worth the money to you is the emotional resonance you feel with the end.

I personally found the journey fulfilling. As a final note, I'll say I think it's probably not the best game to play when you're down in a depressive spiral. If the emotional resonance of the game hits you, it packs a punch, so be prepared.

This is the Synecdoche, New York of Video Games. Instead of delving into the mind of a writer, this disects the mind of a Video Game creator. Not all Video Game creators, but one, from the mind of an individual. Literally saying anymore wouldn't do The Beginner's Guide justice. Plus there was some moments that reminded me of Evangelion. :)

9/10

This game disturbed me on a very personal level. This game made me feel a lot of emotions regarding decisions I have made over the last couple years. This game moved me. Far.

Maybe I'm being a little arbitrary. But that's all I really can do. This game needs to be experienced in order to be explained.

It explores the complexity of some very important points regarding being a creator, a friend, and a person. It made me rethink what it means to create something, be it a piece of art or a video, and think why someone even started creating it in the first place. But aside from that, as I am not a creator of any sorts, it made me look in to relationships I have had, close friends I have kept, and how I thought I was being nice and a great friend to them, but I was really destroying them. It hit me really close to home. At some points I felt like I could have been in the narrorator's seat at any moment. I connected with this game on a such personal level.

However, I wish not to spoil. Please, play this game if you are a creator of art or know one. Play this game if you strugge with your creativity or your relationships.

Sorry for my English, but...!

What an amazing trip!
Playing it feels like doped Victor Pelevin (especially due to prison break keynotes) and.. say Terry Gilliam lived in a brain of talented amateur game designer who suffered from social anxiety disorder.

And the Main Question (which already could contain the Main Answer) still seems to be open.
