The Counting Kingdom Released – Rescue the Kingdom Today

Get your balloons and party hats out, The Counting Kingdom has released! Today is a day of magic, monsters and math – please help us spread the word!

Along with font updates and a few small graphical fixes, here are the bugs that have been fixed in the 1.0.0 update:

  • If the player has the Helper Panel up and combines spells, the panel is no longer accurate
  • In the first tutorial, players could attempt to drag the spell causing all sorts of weirdness to happen
  • The incorrect number of doubling tiles was showing up in Free Play mode
  • If a battering ram gets into the castle, but on the same turn a crumbling tower gets the last monster, the player will lose and then win

A HUGE thank you to all of our Early Access players who have given us feedback and helped us track down bugs – we’re incredibly grateful for your help making this game great! A big wizardly hug from all of us here at Little Worlds Interactive.

Bucket o' Changes: 0.9.1 Update

With the game feature complete we've been polishing things up, getting to all the little things that we didn't have time to revise before, and making sure the game is as bug-free as possible. Here's the list of what's new in this build:

End of Game Cinematic
After you've been kind enough to rescue the Kingdom, it's time to celebrate! I don't want to spoil the ending, but I can promise that it includes cake.

If you've already finished the game, you can access this cinematic by clicking on the little gear button on the Title Screen, and selecting "End Story". This will be locked until you finish the game, so no peeking ahead!

New Particle and Sound Effects
Check out the new particle effects for the Kaboom potion, Freeze potion, and the crumbling towers. We also have new sounds for the Kaboom potion and Battering Rams.

Tiny Changes

  • Updated Credits screen
  • The Kaboom potion now gives 200 points
  • Players can now reset their save data from the title screen menu
  • Players can now access both cinematics from the title screen menu

Bugs that have been fixed
  • Players can click castles during the "You Rescued The Counting Kingdom" screen
  • Monsters that are moved onto doubling tiles do not have their numbers doubled
  • The spell effect doesn't show up for the armored monster the second time you cast a spell on it
  • If you move a monster behind a battering ram it stops moving forward
  • If you use a freeze potion and the battering rams come out during the next two turns, after the potion wears off that row of monsters doesn't move forward
  • Players can use the Move potion, but then not click on any of the arrows

The game is very close to launching - we'll be announcing the official date tomorrow! If you find any bugs please let us know in the forums so that we can get those all squashed as quickly as possible!

    Thanks as always,
Jenna and the LWI team ːwizardmagicː

“Combine the fact that even I got dragged into enjoying The Counting Kingdom being a crusty adult with it’s gorgeous art direction, cute monsters and colourful scenery, and I think this is a game that’s pushing all the right buttons.”
Indie Statik

“Making a video game designed purely for entertainment is hard. Making a video game that can entertain and educate seems infinitely harder, if only for how rarely the goal is accomplished... That’s what makes it so special when a game like The Counting Kingdom, which is available on Steam early access, manages to deftly balance fun and learning.”
The Daily Dot

“In The Counting Kingdom, math is magic, but it’s a magic that’s available to all. Without time limits, without punishment, and with a focus on fun and strategy—and yes, cuteness.”

Great design encourages you to challenge yourself in order to be more efficient. The person(s) who made this game liked what they were doing, and it shows. Glad this went through James Recommends because I never would have found this otherwise. My 4 year old took to it immediatly and put a solid half hour into it and I saw improvement in her math skills clearly. I am going to keep an eye on whatever this company does in the future.

In the Counting Kingdom, by Little Worlds Interactive, you will take on the role of a wizard that has to protect various castles in the realm. To do this you will have potions and spells to help defeat the monsters that are invading. In a turn-based, grid tower defense game you will be faced with monsters that contain numbers, only the exact amount of the number, or a combination of the monsters to a number can stop them. Can you take care of all the monsters before the knock down the walls?

Graphically this has a light cartoony kids feeling to it. With the light colors, and the cute looking monsters you can see that this game is meant to be played by all ages. I really liked the layout of how everything fit on the screen, it wasn't ever too cluttered but it also didn't feel empty.

The map music is this nice light guitar solo that makes me think of story time. The in game music is a fun battle tune. The sounds of the monsters grunting as you select them does get a little old if you play for a long time, but its nothing that is going to cause you to quit the game.

The controls are simply point and click. You click on the next castle you are going to have to protect, and then you will be clicking on potions, monsters, and spells in game.

As you can probably tell this is an educational game that is masquerading as a turn-based tower defense game. I have to say that they have done a DAMN good job making it both enjoyable, entertaining, and of course educational. Sure it has been a long time since last I had to deal with addition and subtraction, but I tell you what, there was something about this game that made me want to keep playing the next level. My only true gripe about the game is that you were taken back to the map screen after successfully completing each level. I would have liked a smooth transition between at least all the levels in a certain area. There are a couple of different areas, and of course as the game progresses the numbers on the monsters gets bigger, but you also get more types of potions to use. These potions range from ones that increase the monster's number, decrease the monster's number, zero out the monster's number, move a monster to a different row, clear off an entire row, or freeze an entire row for a couple of turns.

If you are looking for something that the whole family to play, this is the game to play. There's a difficulty setting, as part of the game, so if you need to make it easy you can do so, or you can pump it up to be a little more challenging. All I have to say is that I couldn't put the game down until I finished it, and I was left wanting more, I wanted to save more castles, defeat more monsters, and though I technically could have started the game over again, I would be very interested to see what the developers could have given us as the next area, or hopefully area(s). This game has to be a 9.2 out of 10.

Great learning game for kids and many adults. Teaches addition, subtraction, and multiplication mostly with positive numbers, but a few negative numbers too depending on in-game circumstances. Short and mildly entertaining for people who are already good at math. Either way, well worth the buy regardless of sale status. I have no complaints about it.

I like this game a lot. Demo'd it at PAX Prime and ended up buying 7 copies over the course of 3 days I was there for people back at home. It mixes math with logic and problem solving in a fun, yet simple fashion. I do have a simple suggestion which is when hitting the escape button and you are prompted with a confirmation screen, please have the screen cancel uupon pressing escape once more.

This game is incredibly fun! The simple premise of turn based tower defense type gameplay where numbered cards must be combined and discarded to match the number of a selected group of attacking monsters grows deeper as the game progresses. Potions to add or subtract numbers from a monster's power combined with spells to move them around, stop them, or get rid of them entirely will keep you on your toes.

As the numbers get bigger on enemies and cards, it gets tougher to make full screen clearing matches but it feels amazing when you do and you'll score tons of points as well! There is also a free play mode where you can jack the difficulty way up that is quite mind bending as well.

This game is highly recommended if you like numbers puzzles and/or have kids who need to practice good math skills. Can't wait to see what else ends up in the game!

The Counting Kingdom has caused quite a stir in my house, as my seven-year-old son is mad at me for pulling him away from the game ater 45 minutes to brush his teeth and go to bed. He picked it up very quickly and became quite engrossed in solving the math problems and finding creative solutions to the latter levels.

If you have a child that likes math, he or she will gravitate to Counting Kingdom for sure. If your kid doesn't like math, it's a great way to change that. The addition problems are simple, but how they get solved is addicively fun!

I have to admit, I was not expecting to have as much fun with this game as I did. It's a kids game targeted at children ages 6 - 8 or so, and this review largely is as well (or moreso: any parents reading this)

The game is polished & adorable, with bright colors, pleasant music, and cute monsters that are largely nonthreatening and quite imaginative.

At its core it's a puzzle game using pretty much the most basic of addition/subtraction- and while the difficulty/complexity of the math problems never really increased, it would have felt out of character for the game to do so.

The gameplay is solid & bug free, with a simple premise (matching the values of monsters on the field with "spells" in your spellbook. You can modify the values of the monsters, and add your spells for greater sums to be used in combos, not as a requirement- just for a higher score. Though clearing 7 monsters at once with a well placed spell is fairly satisfying, even as a 24-year old adult.

It's fairly long too, which is a pretty nice plus for a $4 game.

If you have kids learning math, I'd highly recommend this one. It's pretty easy to pick up, no stress, and just as fun as any of the more mindless apps on the market (Angry Birds/Temple Run, that kind of time vortexes.) Seriously, I would have loved to play this as a child, and still had fun with this as an adult. So if you're an adult that's bored and would like a time-waster, this is actually a fairly decent/low-commitment game as well!

I also did a video review if you'd like to see gameplay/more in-depth impressions (kid friendly): http://youtu.be/QVl0dvIv3zQ

Seriously a fantastic game, for all ages. I just spent a few hours aimlessly counting and destroying monsters.
Besides that, it's super cute! The art is absolutely amazing, and really well thought out.
The AI also seems really well done. The game won't leave you hanging with your last couple monsters on the map and wrong cards - it will start giving you correct cards.

For all those who loved games like Treasure Mathstorm or Math Blaster when they were younger, this will remind you of those good times.

This game is absolutely amazing!

The gameplay is straightforward: Select adjacent monsters on the grid and match their sum to one of your available spells. Spells can be combined into larger numbers to take out more monsters at once, and potions alter the values on the monsters. It's easy enough for anyone to figure out, even for somebody as mathematically challenged as myself. As you progress through the levels, the numbers get larger, and new potions with effects like freezing a row are gradually added. The end result is an experience that's both simple and challenging, and most importantly: fun as hell.

The only way The Counting Kingdom can disappoint is if you miss out on playing it. If I was still young, this game is the kind of fun that would have made me late to school, but since I'm a an adult, it makes me late to work.

Absolutely recommended! This game already has that elusive, addictive quality. Combining scrolls, using potions and adding monsters together is a blast. The production is already of a high quality too. The presentation is bright and cheery enough that children will enjoy it and yet not so cute that adults would feel childish playing it. In short, it's very enjoyable to play.

This is a very cute addition game which has surprising layers to it. While it's intended for kids, it's also good for low-impact gaming for adults when you're just not up to the concentration needed for platformers or combat. It combines tower defense with addition skills, and can be surprisingly twisty! Fun without being laborious for short bite-sized pockets. You won't play this (probably) for an hour or five at a time, but for ten or fifteen minutes between online tasks or while waiting on downloads, it's really enjoyable.

This game is adorable and is definitely NOT just for kids! If you ever liked games like Brain Age but wished it involved hilarious monsters then you need to get The Counting Kingdom. Kids will benefit from the fun and challenging math stuff but everyone will enjoy the strategy of racking up the biggest combos of monsters you can, then blasting them with spells. I highly recommend this game for anyone who likes puzzle games or wants to introduce kids in their lives to the awesomeness of gaming without letting them play GTA or Call of Duty.

I've only had this game for a short time, but I've already managed to rack up hours of gameplay. It's just so wonderful!!

The game itself is a turn based, tower defense game involving math(addition & subtraction), and magic. The design is splendid; the art, the music, and gameplay are all kid friendly. For instance, some of the built-in mechanics will even gently guide younger children to the answers if they become stuck.

There are a myriad of ways to clearing the monsters though. You can add spells together, and chain monsters together in various ways. You're also given potions with varying effects as you progress through the game, so there's a lot of creativity in how you beat each level. That creative freedom is what really gets me addicted. My favorite thing to do is take big risks, and let the monsters stack up a bit. Then unleash all the potions, and big spells in an attempt to get 'full clears'. : )

Story mode itself has numerous levels to progress through, and while you can revisit them at any time; there's also 'free play' mode with scaling difficulties. Oh, and each level is generated on the fly; so there's never any sequence to memorize. It's always going to be a new, and exciting challenge!

A simply charming game for all ages; I definitely recommend it!

Good game for your children, but that's it, for other people there's absolutely no challenge even on highest difficulty. Takes about two hours to completely beat if you are good with maths and can count to 50.
