What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Robocraft has been built with a dedicated community of Robocrafters from the very beginning. It's first release was in April 2013 and had no multiplayer and no combat. From that point and to now the game has grown to it's full MMO state and whilst we still call it a 'Live Alpha' you will find it a very polished and fully featured experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the game to remain in Early Access for at least the next 6 months after it's initial release on Steam. This way the Steam community can help to shape the game as the rest of the Robocraft community has so far.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“When Clan Battles, Tournaments, Megabots (players as bosses in Boss Battles vs. other users), plus integration of Steam Leaderboards and Steam Achievements.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We call it 'Early Alpha' but we expect you to find it as polished and fully featured as most 'Beta' releases.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, Robocraft will always be Free-to-play and our prices won't change as a result of shifting from Early Access to a full release in future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Freejam (the developer of Robocraft) has community in it's blood. The work Freejam is a combination of 'Free' and 'Jam' where 'Free' shows our dedication to keeping Robocraft always Free and 'Jam' stands for 'Jamming'. We like to think of Robocraft as a game that has been built from the ground up with the community and 'Jamming' with the community is ingrained in everything we do.”

New to Robocraft? Here's how to get started quick.

The keyboard controls are very simple. "W" moves your robot forward, "A" turns your robot left, "S" for going backwards and "D" for turning right. When you have thrusters, the controls are exactly the same, except you can go up and down, with "SHIFT" for going down and "SPACE" for going upwards.

Basic Tips

• This game takes practice to master. The starting design in Bay 01 is a well-rounded entry-level robot. Play a few games and get used to the handling and keyboard layout. Once you have gotten used to playing you can press G and try building robots in any of your 3 starting bays. (You can purchase Galaxy Cash to buy more bays)

•Hold off trying modifications until you have a few games under your belt. It really helps.

•Your Tier is determined by your Robot Ranking, not player levels. If you want to progress to higher tiers, with higher Robopoints (RP) and Tech Points (TP) rewards, unlock and buy better gear for your robot.

Construction tips

•Half the battle is won not on the field, but in the construction bay. Remember that well!

•You can press "P" to enter Practice Mode, where you can test your robot in peace.

•At least a basic understanding of physics is necessary in a game like Robocraft.

•Tipped-over robots are a common sight with players at lower tiers. Avoid this by making your robots bottom-heavy, or by expanding your wheelbase and/or track.

•When building your bots try not to position your weapons right behind each other. Lifting rear guns higher is one way to improve gun coverage. This way your guns won't be blocking each other.

•Thrusters are a good idea in order to make your robot accelerate faster, especially if it's is heavy. Note that, barring warping, robots are governed by a coded speed limit.

•For a good Robot Balance is key.

Combat tips

•Press Q when aiming at a target to spot it. This alerts the rest of your team of the target's location, allowing them to lend you firepower in destroying it!

•With SMG's, there is a special method ideal for sniping known as "Tap-firing", where you fire one or twice, let the scope reduce it's size and repeat.

•Though the starting SMG is a fully automatic weapon, resist the urge to hold down the mouse button and spray and pray. The SMG has infinite range, so you can pick off enemies at a distance, up to and including those who are barely visible, but is not recommended for sniping.

•In general, until you acquire better armored cubes, going toe-to-toe with other robots is not recommended, as the basic light chassis cube is very, very weak.

•Cover is your friend. Ideally, you want to position your robot so that only the guns poke up over your cover (a technique known as hull-down), allowing you to fire with impunity. Be careful with your terrain as you may get stuck at times, especially with a poor-handling vehicle.

•Stick together! As it is said, "Two is better than one." A team that fights together will have far more significant chances than if separated. If you wish to battle together with a friend or more, consider creating a Platoon!

•If the situation permits it, flank your target from an unexpected direction while it is occupied with another teammate.

Planning tips

•Once you get a feel for the game, figure out which role you want to play and use your Tech Points appropriately.

•It is not recommend you to go suicide, there is no repair cost so no matter how much damage your robot takes, the repair cost will always be nothing.

•When destroyed, press the Escape key to return to the mothership, then jump into another battle to fight for more Robopoints and techpoints!

Piloting tips

*Avoid ice if your only method of transport is wheels; you can get stranded!

•Don't ram other people; the collision could send you veering off or even get you stuck together.

Hope you find this helpful :D

Robocraft used to be my favorite free game on Steam. Creative, fun gameplay.

Now though, if you want to play Robocraft, you have to install a piece of third party software called "EasyAntiCheat" to play. As far as I can tell, EasyAntiCheat is a keylogger and a screencapper that periodically posts both screenshots and chat logs from the game, with an accompanying username, to a public database. EAC is flagged by most antivirus software, and for good reason - it is blatantly spyware that compromises users' privacy.

I am deeply disappointed at the developers' decision to carelessly disregard their users' privacy, and will not play Robocraft or any other FreeJam game again until I am allowed to play without downloading intrusive third party software. Sadly, I cannot recommend this otherwise excellent game to anyone who cares about their privacy.

Do I recommend this game: Hell yes.

I have spent a good deal of the past few months on this game, and I can tell you that by achieving 1000 hours of gameplay very recently, that this game is not the kind of indie you'd expect. The devs are always checking up on forums, responding to concerns, and helping in every way they possibly can to a several-thousand person player-base, with 15 devs running the place. They've gone to exceedingly long lengths to make this game balanced, and if any player out there gets into this game early, know this: all that fun you're having in the low tiers? Yeah, it only gets better from there :D.

I honestly am extremely proud to say that my favorite game of all time has won indie of the year, and I cannot say it enough, thank you to all the people that make this game fun.

This is the real message. From your point of view, you are always on the blue team. Always fighting the red colored russies. This shows that in war, you never see the evil of your own point of view. We always believe in our morals and never step into other's shoes.

Don't be fooled by its lego appearance and dull looking terrain, the battles are very fun especially boss battles and building your bot is especially, in the mid tiers.

All the different combonations you can make with the free form building makes all tiers much more interesting than other games like world of tanks or war thunder where you're so limited that it can get dull trying to work your way up.

Aside from a few server issues on special event days, I have yet to experience many problems with server stability and the requirements to play it properly are extremely low.

I'd recommend that everyone at least give it a shot, I wouldn't have if someone hadn't told me.

tl;dr

It's an already very good polished Early-Access game with active developers and few bugs. It has loads of content when it comes to building your robots, not so much when it comes to playing (there are currently two game modes and five maps). The F2P model is very fair: You can pay for "Premium" which increases your rewards so you can progress faster, but gives you no advantages during the game whatsoever. Also you get a bonus for each "Premium" member playing with you, which makes you like them (in some other games premium-members are hated). You can also buy cosmetic items and pre-build robots with real money, nothing you really need in order to enjoy the game.

Still too long, didn't read either

It's good and free. Go get it!

Gameplay

The trailer gives you a good look at what you can expect from Robocraft. It has basically two parts:

1. Building your own personal robot. The content here is already pretty decent for an Alpha state game, you can choose between different types of movement (e.g. wheels, legs, skis, caterpillar tracks, wings and thrusters) all of which are combinable and have their own purpose and special application area (besides skis maybe).
In addition, there are currently 4 main weapon types: SMG (basic machine gun, high DPS); Plasma launcher (bombarding gun with high splash damage and medium recharge time); Rail cannon (sniper riffle, very high damage and long recharge time); Nano disrupter (healing gun which can also do damage, close range). Contrary to means of movement you can also attach one type of weapon to one robot. Additionaly, to those 4 weapon classes there are so-called Tesla Blades which can be independently attached to a robot and deal damage to enemies when touching them.
There are also several extensions one can use to make his robot more competative (e.g. Scanners, Radar Jammers and Radar Receivers).

Playing with your robot. Robots are divided into 10 different Tiers depending on their strength and fire power. When playing the classic Team-Deathmatch mode one will only play with robots about your rating (neglecting Platoons). These games are usually 10-vs-10 and in order to win your team has to either wipe out the enemy team or capture their home base. Destroying enemy bots works a little bit different in Robocraft than it does in a lot of other games. You do not have a life bar with HP that reduce when you get hit until they get to 0 and you are dead. It's more like every individual part of your robot has its own health bar, you only destroy what you actually hit. This gives direct combat a strategic element, you can decide to focus on your enemies guns to make him helpless, or demobalize him. Parts of a robot which are no longer connected to the cockpit are automatically destroyed, so you should try to target important weak points. A robot is completly destroyed when it has lost the block that his cockpit was attached to. This allows for fast kills (sometimes even one-hits) if the cockpit is exposed.
The other game mode is called boss-battle. It features an assymetric fight were a small group of higher tier robots (1-4 players) fight against a huge group of lower tier robots (about 15).

State of Early-Access

Good!. Honestly, the developers are anxious to allow a good gaming experience even in its current Alpha state. As for bugs the game is already very polished. There are some issues with people not being able to start the game at all because of their antivirus software not liking Roboshield (a third party anti-cheat software they use), but for most of them exist fixes in the game forums. Also, sometimes their servers are overloaded and you will have to wait in order to get into a game.
However, the developers are very motivated to resolve issues. E.g. there was a big server problem before Christmas and the developers spend their holydays fixing it. They also give away free days of Premium as an apology.

Fairness of Free-to-Play

Robocraft is, with its current policy F2P done right. You can pay for "Premium". Being a premium member pretty much doubles everything you get, so it helps progressing very fast through the tiers. However, for each Premium-member in a game, all other also get 5% bonus from their rewards. This means that Premium members have no advantage in a game whatsoever, and also that Premium members are liked and welcome. Apart from Premium, one can also spend real money to buy cosmetic items (masks or badges with flags on them) and pre-build robots (-> nothing one does actually give you an advantage). In some other F2P games you can pay real money for items like "15% more damage" or other unfair advantages and are therefore condemned by other players. The system Robocraft uses is very appealing and should be industry standard.

If you decide to give Robocraft a shot and need any help, the official Wiki is a great source. You can of course also add and ask me, name is iTobii.

Build robots and fight with them in team battles against other players. A mixture of Lego and World of Tanks - super fun!
This game is a fine example of how an early access game has to look like. Robocraft has got solid base that is working and stable already and the devs maintain and extend the game consistently. Content gets added regulary and all those little nuisances which bug you slowly but steadily get patched out putting the game into a better and better state with each update.

The game is financed by a pay to progress system. Everything but a couple of cosmetic items is accessable for everyone by just playing the game. Throwing coins at Freejam reduces the time you need to get there. Once you've reached the end-game (= once you've got a solid T10 robot) there is little need to spend money on anything else but cosmetic items and garage slots (if you want to build more than 3 different robots). At least for me the ingame currency flows in quick enough to keep up with my construction needs. Overall I'd dare to state spending more than 50 bucks at the game doesn't yield any noticeable effect anymore. Personally I've spend about half of that money on the game and still progressed in a timely fashion (T1-T10 in less than a week).

Purchasement tip: The size of your bots is limited by its CPU-flop rating (400 when you start the game and 11flops are added with each lvl up to the maximum lvl of 100). While CPU-flop rating won't hold you back at the beginning of the game it's what will restrict you the most in the long run as the lvl progression is rather slow. To quicken this progress you can buy a premade robot with a high CPU-flop rating from the roboshop. It does not only give you a headstart with regards to equipment and premium time but also your CPU-rating gets raised to the robots CPU-rating which allows you to reach the CPU rating cap of 1511 flops way earlier.
Also Check out these PROMO-CODES if you're interested in a free headsstart. Note that some of the codes listed in that wiki need to be entered on the registration page. The codes can be entered by selecting the "Enter Code" button in the window which pops up when the ESC-key is pressed in the main menu.

One of my favorite free to play games! What is the best part of this game? It is NOT a Pay to Win game! This is thanks to the teir'd system that is in place in Robocraft. If you feel like paying a few bucks to speed things up, go ahead. But if you want to play the game without spending a single cent, it is totally possible.

Gameplay is extremely fun as well as halarious at times. Your imagination is the limiting factor in this game. If you enjoyed playing with Legos as a kid, then you will surely enjoy this game.

Legos + BattleBots = an insanely large amount of fun... Add friends to make it better!

This game is the best game in the world!!! I can't say anything bad about this game except the small platoons. This game is just in alpha and I consider this the best game I've ever played!!! It's not like those stupid game where if you get to level 30 you level only like a once a week. This game just keeps you roling, and you can invite 2 friends (3 with premium) to play along with you in this amazing game! You also have the unique power to build your tank from the ground up, being able to fully costumize your entire robot. And it's not just like you do just that; this game is class based! You can decide to be a medic who heals his allies (and trust me watching your robot being rebuilt in action is something you don't see very often, for when you get hurt your blocks and guns fall off of your bot being healed and getting them back just looks amazing), or you can be a mighty plasma shooter who uses artillery like weapons to obliterate the enemies!! There's 4 classes as of now, but there's no need to explain each one. All you need to know is that it's worth playing this game, and I can't wait as to what it can become!

Great game where you can get hundreds of hours of fun gameplay.
There are several types of weapons, movement blocks and armor blocks to combine and come up with the best robot you can, then take your robot to battle and see how it compares against the creations of other people.
