What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are developing this game together with our community. Your feedback, your critics, your suggestions are what drives this game forward. In the last weeks this game had over 11 patches and more than 17 hot-fixes (July 2014). Our community helps us to make the game we all want to have. This is what Early Access is truely about - making a game together with the community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are aiming for an early access phase not longer than 6 months. However the game will stay in the alpha state until you guys think it's ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be based on players input from the early access phase. Right now we designed and build the game-mechanics how we think it would be cool - but maybe it isn't or the community comes up with some amazing feature requests like they already did in the past.

The full version will also have a turret system, different biomes, more wildlife and community-approved game-mechanics.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“While the game runs stable and contains already a lot of polished game-play this game is still unfinished so there might be still bugs, annoyances, unfinished game-mechanics, unbalanced weapons/structures, unbalanced dinosaurs, GUI bugs, servers might go up and down a lot, multiple patches in a single day.

We are actively working on the game and we will supply different types of servers so you can play without our work interfering with your game-play but please do not expect a perfect game. We also tend to change things, try out mechanics, remove them again - if you are not enjoying forging the game just wait, in a few months this game will come out.

Update Nov/2014
In our community there are quite a few people with more than hundreds of hours playtime so we believe the game is already in a very enjoyable state.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes! Once the game is fully released the price will represent the final state of the game. Right now we are selling this game at a discounted price, without any pay-to-win scheme, without a monthly subscription.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We would like to fully integrate our community into the development process. Important game-play/game-mechanics decisions should be community-based. Also on future updates we would like to know what the community prefers us to work on.

The past 15 updates have been made based on community feedback.”

Awesome Item/Crafting Guide from our Community

Hello,
i wanted to hint out that that the gamer Kipriou made an awesome guide for items and structures in Beasts of Prey.

It's highly recommended that new players take a look as it can really get you started a bit faster as the guide also covers the basics like gathering and shows you how you advance through the different crafting tiers of the game.

Again, many thanks go to Kipriou for taking the time and giving everyone a detailed guide on our crafting system.

Have a look!

This game definately has potential, however , right at this point in time i dont think i can recommend. Granted it is in alpha, so their are many bugs, glitches and un-intuative features.

Pros:
+Nice looking graphics on the world itself
+Has Dinosaurs
+Massive Potential

Cons:
-Bugs and glitches are rampant throughout
-Animations are terrible, most enemies dont even show an attack animation when they hit you 60% of the time
-Melee is also terrible, enemies will hit you from 3x the distance you can hit them
-Not enough small stones! Need to increase by 2x at least. took most of my play time to find 20. And 50% of the time they despawn before i can reach them.
-Building system, while having a fair amount of optons, is crippled. Cant place most things in most places(with flag). Should be able to place furnace in my house, the furnace chimney would look like my house chimney.
-Enemies you do manage to kill or that you see killed tend to despawn so quickly you cant loot.
-If you compare this game to other alphas, take 7 days to die for instance, which appears to have been developing for about the same time, Beasts of prey is way, way behind.
-Ranged Combat is screwed also. when you shoot xbow, bolt originates from your face not the weapon, so you have to aim at their nutsack to hit them in the chest/face.
-I could go on.

Keep in mind this is my opinion of an in-alpha early access game,

All in all, if your interested in this game, either wait a while longer for these issues to be sorted and the game in general be more polished, or get it on sale (like i did) and still wonder why you did. (other than because its dinosaurs and not your typical zombie fest)

4/10 (for now)

I haven`t looked at this game in some time, and last time I was not impressed at all.

Coming back to it after several months and I have to say I am seriously not impressed with it.

Despite maxing out the graphics it still looks horrid, the world is bland, boring and unapealing, trees look totally rubbish at distance or up close, despite setting longest distance draw range things still pop up near by, grass is minimal at best, I could go on and on about the poor visuals.

Dinosaurs are supposed to be the main feature in the game, yet they are dumb, some stand around like statues doing nothing for ages, others just acting brain dead and wandering aimlessly around.

Then we get to something that wasn`t in last time I played, canibals. Dear god they are stupid too, and when you get close they somehow cause you damage from a bigger range than you need to hurt them, and yet they don`t actually seem to be doing anything at all! Just walking but somehow killing you!

Seriously I can`t see this title ever getting good, I found it horrible on release, and despite the boasts of big work done and graphic improvements I still feel it is a pile of dino poop.

TL:DR: No, seriously, buy ARK when it comes out on June 2

(By the way, they are having something of a campaign on the forums to get people to write positive reviews)

This game is a disaster with many bugs from the first day still remaining almost a year later. Here's a quick example of why this game will never be any good. When H1Z! came out, the dev fell in love with it and decided many of the systems from that game should be in his. He even did a thread on it in the forum, stating all the ideas he was going to bring over. Meanwhile, all the flaws and bugs from his own game didn't seem to register with him. Instead of fixing what he had and moving forward from there, he just scatterbrained a bunch of new ideas in. Same thing happened when he went through his The Forest phase and added cannibals (who teleport and usually have no attack animation and can hit you from 10 or more feet away).

Since day 1 there have been save problems, problems with losing your inventory, problems with dinosaurs walking through structures, glitches with the crafting system, etc. These have not been addressed, but new problems, such as cannibals, etc. have been createdd.

Since almost day one, strange design decisions have been implemented. For instance, now upon entering the game, you have to collect 50 stones to make an axe (because of the things you have to craft before you can make one). This process can literally take a couple of hours because of the scarcity of stones.

And with the last update, dinosaurs have disappeared for most people. They aren't spawning. But don't worry. The dev has some personal issues to take care of and then he'll look into it.

Basically, this game started with a lot of promise, but has gotten consistently worse through EA. Just stay away from it.

Played for a bit, though have not tried new release. I am not much of an online player so am glad for the single player. Has some decent graphics and dynamics to it. Crafting is cool. Only things I do not like is that it is a lot like Rust where resources are far and few at times. I do not think resources respawn, so would be nice if the trees vanished after chopped so am not returning to the same trees. Some of the building seemed a bit sloppy, but it is still early access and is not that bad.
All in all, I like the game.

I know I didnt give the game a ton of time but still. It feels like banging your head against a wall. People leave automated turrets everywhere that kill you even in the pve server. Dinos kill you before you can craft anything. Or when you do craft anything and you die you start back at your camp with nothing except what you left behind. Or if you dont have a camp yay then its random spot time! Not worth it. Too much effort and time to get anywhere in this game.

After all the updates and the huge new map I just have to make a review, ´cause of the mixed recommendations.
I enjoy this game since the very beginning. Its simple, but at lot of fun. Exploring the world, building huge bases, hunting the dinos, fighting other players . . . its all there, all you need for a survival dino game. I have now 200+ hours and its still a lot of fun, alone or with my friends. The DEV invests a lot of time in this game, in the last days and weeks we got a lot of updates, bugfixes and support - and we are at a point, where this game is not only fun, but also stable and improves from week to week, killing the bugs - thx BURNZ, doing a great job.
Give it a try, if you love DINOS and survival, BOP is a must.

a FAN of this game

Still very early access. Looks a lot better than it did, but in many ways it's still not close to finish. I've almost given up on this game. Seriously with all the new updates I feel this game has taken a giant leap backwards.

Played around 140h so far, here is my review:

At the time of me writing this, the game is still in EarlyAccess which means it isn`t feature complete at all and may have a long time ahead until finished. BoP is made in Unity and was recently updated to Version 5 of the engine, bringing a lot of nicely done effects and overall graphics.

Beasts of Prey is not your typical sruvival-game that spawned like mushrooms after the DayZ mod for ArmA 2 OA gained a lot of attention, there is no need to gather food nor do you need to drink (yet, may change, unlikely according to the dev).

It let`s you focus on the important part, survival against dinosaurs and other players,if you are into PvP.this is optional/depends on the serversetting. There is also a small tribe of mutant/cannibals that lurk the woods to keep things interesting. While you can flee/avoid any PvE contact, you need to engage once you reach a certain Tier of things to craft since dinosaur leather and other things are needed to craft high end equippment.

The gathering system is sort of tiered, too. You will not be able to mine for ore without a pickaxe for example,it`s not too complicated tho.

Crafting & Building is nice and goes off the hand easily. You have means to claim land to build on and aside from starter houses that are just bigh enough for a bed and a workbench, you can build very big bases.
There are means to defend your property and also ways for other people to come in,like explosives to open up the gates for example (does not apply to PvE setting).

Since the introduction of ladders to climb walls, the variety of bases suffered in my opinion. Before it wasn`t needed to create airtight complexes that resemble a cube from the outside, people had many different setups that ranged from wide areas with differences in height to forts that you would find during the wild, wild west.
At the moment it is more cubes than anything so for the time beeing, you have to deal with that and copy this layout if you want to give people at least a challenge to raid you.May change for the better in the future,i sure hope so.

Lets talk about everybodys darling,weapons:
There is a somewhat wide array of useable weapons, ranging from Pistols to Heavy Snipers with different pro`s and con`s and damage models regarding other players or dinosaurs (do not try to hunt a T-Rex with a Handgun and expect success). The handling is alright, everything you would expect from gunplay is already in the game and ready to be enjoyed. There is no decay on tools or weapons so if you do not drop anything,it is yours forever to be utilized,as long as you can keep crafting ammo of course.

Whats next, dinosaurs of course.Don`t ask me the names of all the dinos that are in the game, aside from T-Rex and Velocyraptor,i forgot everything from my childhood. The models are nice to look at and got enhanced a lot during my time and i doubt that we saw the last update regarding GFX on this sector already.
Granted, the AI is a bit dull but do not forget that this is still E.A and be grateful that the times of Dinos spawning inside your base or walking right trough your walls to eat you are gone.

For a team that small (changing numbers but 1 main-dev that keeps the game moving forward), it is an incredible archivement to deliver something like Beasts of Prey, even in its current form. There is still much to do and certain elements should be redone or adjusted to fit the setting better but overall the game is great.I have no idea what the exact price is at the moment, chances are high that you are reading this because there is a sale so let me assure you that for that amount of money, you get a lot in return.

The game is enjoyable alone (might get boring after some time),with friends on a private server (you are free to host your own private gameserver/open it to the public) or you can play with strangers on a community or official server.
If you are like me and seek the thrill of having other players around to fight against or form alliances, you will get your moneys worth of fun.

Just keep in mind that the game is far from finished and best played with other people, many things i just wrote could already be changed for good at the time you are reading this.

I may have missed something important,if i get a brainzapp what it is i will edit this review but thats it for the moment.

Would i recommend this game? Yes,even with all the flaws it currently has,it is something different and it is worth your money

This new update, though really nice in its look, lacks much in gameplay. That is where the focus should be. I do hope the dev is paying attention to the feedbacks. Bring back the spawning rocks. Also when placing a flag in single player there is no foundation stone or chest. There is no option to create a foundation stone anymore. So to place a crafting table cant be done because the flag is sticking out of the ground and nothing can be put on it like before. So cant craft or place anything down. How can one advance when the flag stone isnt there or no way to make them. Also, where is the ore. Cant make anything without that? Spawning rates of the current raw stone is way to slow.

With all early access games, there are issues. But, I will Say the developers are doing their best to address as much of the problems as they can. I applaud them for making the game fun! Because in the end, this is why we play the games! With that said... I miss my old base!! lol Keep up the great work guys!

Overview- Beast of Prey, like many others, is a survival multiplayer game. You gather wood, build structures, gather supplies, and try to survive among a land lost in time, a land filled with dinosaurs.
Gameplay- Very difficult and tedious. Personally I feel the game doesn't reward you enough, the work is too strenous to get a whole lot done. Death is a pain in the ♥♥♥, you lose all your inventory and spawn very far from where you died. I recommend building a safe and a bed as one of your top priorities. Overall fairly enjoyable.
Graphics- The game has an amazingly beautiful landscape and detail, map design is awesome and unique, now the animations are sloppy and the dinosaurs don't look natural when moving which I hope gets an upgrade soon. Despite how beautiful the game looks the dinosaurs didn't really receive as much glory as they should have and could look more natural with greater detail which I expect will be updated over time with the addition of a former Jurassic Park:Aftermath addtion worker.
Sound- Decent sounds to the dinosaurs, could use work like the animations.
Dinosaurs- Herbivores are always a nice sight to see, larger carnivores keep you at the edge of your toes, the smaller carnivores are great. Now the dinosaurs are pretty annoying when they start to chase you and will literally chase you across the whole map making it very difficult, getting a crossbow or axe would be recommended. The dinosaurs look decent but didn't get the full glory as I can feel more detail can be put into them, but I expect to see them receive a visual enchancement later on.
Overall this is a enjoyable game but has it's fair share of flaws. This game has so much potential and I hope to see great things in the future.

** These are my initial thoughts on the game as it stands at this point and are in no way meant to encourage or discourage purchase **
*Also (mildly) satirical*

BoP has potential but, being an alpha, still leaves a lot to be desired. Below are a couple things I've noticed in the short time I've played.

The menus have limited options and are clunky; I would personally like a very clear cut way to set up a private game with friends as that is our (my friends and I) prefered play style over going online with a bunch of randos. If you gotta get murdered for your dino leather, etc, then it's nice to know the guy carving his initials into your spleen is someone you know and trust rather than some dorito crumb covered neckbeard in a far off basement angrily pleasuring himself to the image of your corpse.
*coughs* Anyway.....There is an annoying bug that causes your inventory to disappear until you logout then back in to the server; This seems to happen when trying to craft. i.e. I went to turn a quantity of logs into planks (like ya do) and after one log was turned into a plank said plank and all other materials and items in my inventory just... vanished. As stated, relogging will solve this problem... temporarily.... like every time I try to make a plank I have to relog. Not the best solution.
The raptors or whatever they are... the little bipedal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s that enjoy nomming your leg... are hard to hit with your axe or knife. What I mean is that I thought simply being within arms reach and swinging would result in showing the scaley fiend whatfor, but apparently you need to do some sort of contortionist routine until you get just the right angle to hit the bugger. I would have much rather used a gun, but well.... I haven't been able to get to the stage of finding/making a gun yet, so axe it is.

Having said all that, I don't regret buying BoP. I hope this game lives up to the potential it has. I'm going to say I recommend it (there really should be a neutral option) because of the afformentioned potential and what looks to be a relatively proactive development team.
