What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are developing this game together with our community. Your feedback, your critics, your suggestions are what drives this game forward. In the last weeks this game had over 11 patches and more than 17 hot-fixes (July 2014). Our community helps us to make the game we all want to have. This is what Early Access is truely about - making a game together with the community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are aiming for an early access phase not longer than 6 months. However the game will stay in the alpha state until you guys think it's ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be based on players input from the early access phase. Right now we designed and build the game-mechanics how we think it would be cool - but maybe it isn't or the community comes up with some amazing feature requests like they already did in the past.

The full version will also have a turret system, different biomes, more wildlife and community-approved game-mechanics.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“While the game runs stable and contains already a lot of polished game-play this game is still unfinished so there might be still bugs, annoyances, unfinished game-mechanics, unbalanced weapons/structures, unbalanced dinosaurs, GUI bugs, servers might go up and down a lot, multiple patches in a single day.

We are actively working on the game and we will supply different types of servers so you can play without our work interfering with your game-play but please do not expect a perfect game. We also tend to change things, try out mechanics, remove them again - if you are not enjoying forging the game just wait, in a few months this game will come out.

Update Nov/2014
In our community there are quite a few people with more than hundreds of hours playtime so we believe the game is already in a very enjoyable state.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes! Once the game is fully released the price will represent the final state of the game. Right now we are selling this game at a discounted price, without any pay-to-win scheme, without a monthly subscription.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We would like to fully integrate our community into the development process. Important game-play/game-mechanics decisions should be community-based. Also on future updates we would like to know what the community prefers us to work on.

The past 15 updates have been made based on community feedback.”

Developers of Beasts of Prey...I'm going to be honest and up-front with you.. this game broke my heart...

I have played other build/survive games and was hoping that this game would match what other games could do yet find myself disappointed.

To illustrate my point I will describe my experiences in your game:

I enter a dedicated server... spawn in an extremely laggy area, infested with bases... start running... gets chased by 5 people all working on a base together... run away and ditches guys trying to kill me... spends 2 HOURS running around the island trying to find my own little slice of dino island... failed as every area is over run with bases either in use or not... never sees one dino (except for an area in the center of the island which is overrun with dinos

Log into a private server... MUCH fewer bases... finds area that is relatively secluded and starts gathering materials for base.... builds base... gathers more materials... adds on additions to base. Logs off. Logs on next day...finds that claim flag has disappeared.. deletes portions of base to make new claim flag area... crafts weapons to hunt dinos for clothing... looks for dinos... runs for 20 mins to center of map to kill dinos... finds dino's nest area... finds medium dino..takes out weapon and fires wave after wave of shots until dino is dead... instead of dino dying they glitch twerk into oblivion... hunts smaller dinos instead... kills smaller dinos and gets skin they drop... goes back to base to tan dino skin...realizes is bored and logs out to play another game.

The problem with this game is that it's not a survival game... there's no hunger bar that if it drops too long will kill me... dinosaurs huddle around one area and never leave it, making it easy to avoid them and when killed either twerk spaz out into oblivion or die and become unlootable (at least on the server I played on).

Dedicated servers areas are clogged to capacity because dino's can't destroy walls/houses/base area/etc and on pvp servers requires massive amounts of work to be able to destroy another players base.

The problem with the game is that there's no real purpose to playing it... dino's can't destroy your base.. there's no purpose to gathering food because you cannot starve... and other than the over-aggressive (or over-bored) players there's no real danger... therefore no purpose to playing the game, which is BAD because that's what survival/builder games are about...collecting resources, building a base that can withstand whatever and not dying.

Look Devs...I WANT to like this game...I WANT to give this game a thumbs up in the ratings area...I WANT to pour hours of my time into it.. but those are things I cannot do.

Any savvy gamer is not going to be fooled by the "Still in progress" disclaimer on your game as any real gamer is going to rate your game based on what it offers now, and not what it MAY offer in the future...

I don't care if the visuals ever get better or not.... I don't care if vehicles ever get added to the game or not (in fact I hope they don't).. I don't care if any more items get added to the game or not, because the MAIN problem with this game is that it is trying to be a survival game without any real survival element.

As of such on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate this game a 3 (with one point thrown in because some of the dino twerking was funny).

You have a great idea at the core of the game but there needs to be built a game around it BEFORE it's released to the public.

To start: Bought this game for me and three of my gaming clan buddies.

Likes:
  1. Dinosaur models are great, can't wait to see more variety show up and see the new AI that they'll be implementing
  2. Beautiful map and flora. Wondering if we'll see procedural mapping later on.
  3. Great concept and hopefully better execution than stomping land had.
  4. Great crafting system, would like to see some expansion in regards to food and drink systems. (berries, fruit, vegetables etc)

Dislikes:
  1. The introduction should only happen on first play through or major changes to map or such. Seeing it both on start of game and everytime you connect to a server gets tedious.
  2. Servers are too few, would like to see either more official servers, maybe one in the western hemisphere, as well as more regular server wipes on the private servers. Too many times have I spawned and seen like fourty bases around me, and turrets left and right. Makes me not want to play a PvP server because you can't really leave spawn grounds.
  3. On topic of spawning, there should be dynamic spawn as long as you don't spawn right in the middle of a dino nest. Makes it more interesting to try and find each other, but also prevents the spawn boxing that happens with bases just outside of spawn area.

Suggestions:
  • make there more middle ground tech. So far it seems like you get base resources and can tech up pretty quickly to having a gun. Maybe start off with a sling, or a spear, then a bow, then a cross bow, etc etc.
  • more advance skillsets. I've seen the concept ideas of friendly and hostile skill trees. Would work great with karma system. Only issue is that would carry out onto the PvE servers. Can't be friendly or hostile really. Recommend just being able to level up into which ever one. Creates a cool dynamic amongst tribes, and allows for specialization. For instance, explosives expert. That way you don't have five guys with all the same skills who can all just wreak havoc. Means you have to wait for your tribe to get on to pull off a raid. Would be cool

  • All in all I do enjoy the game. Just cause have a long list of dislikes and suggestions doesn't mean it isn't good. Definitely grab the game, or grab on sale, and try it out. With a strong community we could see a game with the enjoyment factor of Rust, but with that unique Dinosaur element! Heck they can even make it so you start off as a caveman and get smarter as you go along each day based on food and training. That'd be cool!

A game definitely still in progress, but many of the controls and functionality are just poorly designed. Poor inventory management, the ability not to easily share times in a multiplayer game is just a disaster. The world is not alive, the dinosaurs seem stale, and the PVP mode can become very frustrating as their is no balance for new players. Overall I think this game will finally get it, and it is an Early access game, so we should be forgiving as it is evolving. However as it stand right now, I will give it a yes recommendation, but I am planning on keeping up with it and revising this review. This game does get the vibe right, and it looks like it is on the right track. 5/10

I like the game and there are some problems i will mention in this review, lets start with the postive ones.

The game has amazing lighting affects and good 3D animation. I also like how it adds new range of weapons and clothes, I love how they put a jeep in the game and automatic turrets that you can defend your property with.

Negative: I hate how the game crashes when you die and sometimes for no reason at all. The flags and torches dissipear and when you crash and log back on you lose a quarter of your health.

Things to fix/improve: Please stop making the torches and flags dissipear because its a pain in the ♥♥♥ to rebuild them. Please add more stones in the game because i can hardly find any.

Great little game which has many flaws, but this is very early days for this game, so expect clipping, graphical glitches and the odd Crash in places, but all in all a great spin on the Survival Game Series. Looking forward to seeing more content in the future

a game with lots to offer, if they can fix all the bugs before full release. the jist of this game is simple. gather, build, survive, and hunt dino's and/or other players. great atmosphare and day and night rotations. textures are very nice as well. this game offers single player, multi-player pve & pvp servers.

the pro's

online servers get updated regularly.
beautiful world envirnment
dino's are really cool
VR support
fluint game play when bugs are not interfaring.

the con's

solo play is full of bugs and glitches (i really hope they fix the single player mode)
not many people playing online (4-5 were on the PVE server when i was playing online)
like any online game like this.....to many hackers, pricks, and trollz ((also why i hope they fix the single player mode))

the verdict

all and all this game is great for a early access release. the bugs and glitches are expected for early access. though the bugs are not so bad in multi player mode, they are horrible in single player mode. being that the online play seems to get all the fixes, tells me by time this game comes out of early access, i can see it becoming a strickly MMO game simular to Rust with dino's.. i myself hope they fix the single player mode and keep it as an option for game play. the online game play is nice. but i don't always like to worry about being hacked or trolled and just enjoy the game for what it is with out all the hassel of others.

single player bugs needing to be fixed AT this time

workbench inventory not working proper (sometimes won't let you pull items out after identifing ores.)
ok alot of things just not working proper.
crash bug
moving items from one place to inventory
having to relog just to get things working right (sometimes have to relog several times or even 20-30 min after you been playing because things will stop working) mainly inventory, chest's, and work station invo's are the major problems with the single player mode.

full game bugs
BoP sever still keeps you logged in after logging out. so to completely log out of game with no background stuff running from the game. you have to ctrl, alt, deleate to bring up task manager and go to serveses or applications tab and find BoPserver and end process to completely log out of game.

other then that the game has a geat concept, good feel of "Land of the Lost" kinda theme. controls are nice and visuals are outstanding. tons of potential for this early access game. i personaly am glad i bought this early access game and was able to try it out as it hopefully gets better and better.

It has sooo much potential to be great but there are a ton of issues. Dinosaurs still walk through my house sometimes and dmg me while doing so. Guns do virtually no damage to dinosaurs, a heasshot should do something extra ....... But I still find myself playing just because I can build a castle of wood and stone and stare at dinosaurs while doing so . If the developers do not get lazy It wil be amazing.

I thought this game was going to be a nice little suvival game. I was wrong, very very wrong. There are hundreds of empty buildings and half of them arent finished. You have to wonder for about an hour to find a dinosaur, and they dont leave a small area. You dont need to get food or even sleep, no point in hunting or building a bed. You dont even need to build a base because there are HUNDREDS of them just thrown about by people. There are no dinos any where, you have to go across the ENTIRE island just to find a group. This game would be really fun, but there is no survival in it. This is not a ssurvival game, this is a...I dont even know the word for it. Dont buy this game, there is no point in playing it, there is nothing to do in this game but wonder around.

Man beast of prey is great a game!

Well you start off with a nice choppy intro scene that's probably not evening running 25 fps~.despite the fact that your computer is worth more than your car.

I shrugged it off and joined a multiplayer server, thinking this game was going to be great. after a quick load into the server i decided to take a jog.. to realize that i was still lagging very hard. But that was the least of my problems.. it looked to me as if 12 rhinosaurus's where headed my way. Scrambling around trying to find my bearings with this unbarable lag the rhino's have reached me and started pummeling me into the air. at first i figured i was destined to die a laggy death, but no all the sudden i was riding dinosaurs while killing them.

Summary..

Pros
Great game for people with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game selection
Great game for people with terrible computers( as you're specs really dont matter the games gonna run like ♥♥♥♥ no matter what)
Great game for people that like a dev team with lack of creation and motivation.

Well, not a lot to say. The typical, Early Access, expect broken , and yada yada. The community seems nice (PvE) The community is rubbish and aggressive (PvP) is over all it is just like every other game online.

This one does have Dinos and if you only like PvE it is worth it. The PvP is just spawn camping and name calling, just wretched, imho.

So, if you like Dinos, only PvE and want to help out a Early Access title (known those risks) get it, if not, don't.

Way of the road, bubs. Way of the road.

First: I only played on local server. This game is very much early access. Suprisingly few bugs, but the ones that exist are occasionally game breaking. Sometimes inventory items become unresponsive when trying to move them, but that fixes itself pretty quickly by successfully moving another item. Frustrating sometimes when it occurs with your knife on spawn. Only other issue I had was bigger, and the game quit to desktop and when I logged back in my flag, house, and everything in it (forge, second level crafting table, metal safe, etc) was gone, although I kept everything in my inventory. Looks very promising, worth the investment for me.

EDIT Jan 17, 2015: OPT INTO THE BETA! I did this, at the cost of what I built in my local server, but HUGE difference in playability. None of the inventory problems I was having earlier happened, and gameplay overall is so much smoother.

Good game. Has potential but definately in alpha phase. Graphics are great but gameplay seems to be lacking. No tree falling animations so harvesting is kind of lame as trees remain where they are even after lumber is gone. There is no tutorial so looked it up on youtube. Again the idea is great but there needs to be much more in the update category for this game to be complete.
