What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are developing this game together with our community. Your feedback, your critics, your suggestions are what drives this game forward. In the last weeks this game had over 11 patches and more than 17 hot-fixes (July 2014). Our community helps us to make the game we all want to have. This is what Early Access is truely about - making a game together with the community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are aiming for an early access phase not longer than 6 months. However the game will stay in the alpha state until you guys think it's ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be based on players input from the early access phase. Right now we designed and build the game-mechanics how we think it would be cool - but maybe it isn't or the community comes up with some amazing feature requests like they already did in the past.

The full version will also have a turret system, different biomes, more wildlife and community-approved game-mechanics.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“While the game runs stable and contains already a lot of polished game-play this game is still unfinished so there might be still bugs, annoyances, unfinished game-mechanics, unbalanced weapons/structures, unbalanced dinosaurs, GUI bugs, servers might go up and down a lot, multiple patches in a single day.

We are actively working on the game and we will supply different types of servers so you can play without our work interfering with your game-play but please do not expect a perfect game. We also tend to change things, try out mechanics, remove them again - if you are not enjoying forging the game just wait, in a few months this game will come out.

Update Nov/2014
In our community there are quite a few people with more than hundreds of hours playtime so we believe the game is already in a very enjoyable state.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes! Once the game is fully released the price will represent the final state of the game. Right now we are selling this game at a discounted price, without any pay-to-win scheme, without a monthly subscription.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We would like to fully integrate our community into the development process. Important game-play/game-mechanics decisions should be community-based. Also on future updates we would like to know what the community prefers us to work on.

The past 15 updates have been made based on community feedback.”

Update 21 - A New World & 40% Discount!

This update is one of the biggest Beasts of Prey has ever received. It took us quite longer as so many drastic changes involved forced us also to update/replace a lot of the games main code. With the new game-world the game also received a new UI and updated game-mechanics. A lot of code has been rewritten from scratch to improve performance and to incorporate the new UI into the game.

For new players:
Getting started in Beasts of Prey can be very hard, especially when playing on the official servers with others. It's recommended that you learn the basics of building, conquering and surviving. The basic steps are gathering some wood and stones and finding a suitable place for building. To prevent other players from stealing you should build at least 2-4 foundations and cover them with palisades. Many players figured out that having multiple levels of defense can greatly discourage raiders. You are also able to build turrets that will automatically shoot other players on sight.

To access the higher tiers of crafting you want a crafting table and later on a CNC table. The table saw can greatly reduce the grind because it will give you 3 wood planks for each wood log you turn into. Gathering stone can be tedious, so make sure you get oil pumps at some point, they allow you to produce fuel which powers mining drills that will produce both stones and ores. Fuel can be produced through the refinery, at that point you might want to add some sulfur to the refinery so it will produce plastic instead of fuel.

Important for tribes :
Since you don't have coordinates or mini maps with only a compass you can get lost quite quickly in the new world. It's recommended to get a tent up for your fellow tribe mates as soon as possible so your friends don't spawn in random locations all the time. The new map has a lot of landmarks (Vulcan, rivers, waterfalls, swamps, caves etc.) so use that to your advantage.

Changes :
- A new game-world featuring oceans, rivers, cliffs, Vulcan, swamps, waterfalls and canyons.
- Several SpeedTree(tm) Trees have been integrated into the world.
- New foliage has been added to the game-world.
- Several local sound effects have been added.
- New grass and ground textures.
- New water shaders for ocean, rivers and swamps.
- New Main Menu Design.
- New In-game Menu accessible through a single key (TAB).
- New Crafting, Armour Slots, Inventory System, Hot-key System.
- New In-game Video Options.
- New Memory Management for both client and server.
- New Network routines to further minimize latency.
- New day/night cycle.
- Several PostEffects have been added to the game which can be enabled/disabled based on your computers performance.
- Switched rendering to linear deferred.
- Several structures and dinosaurs received visual adjustments to improve their appearance.
- New Random-Spawn System. You no longer spawn in predefined spots. The system looks for empty places to spawn you in case you do not have a bed.
- New Dinosaur Spawning Algorithm. Small Dinosaurs are now more common, the larger ones have a smaller spawning chance.
- New Inventory System based on Slots. Your personal inventory now is limited to max. 24 Slots.
- New Stone Spawn System. Instead of "chopping stone with a knife" you now can find smaller stones around the world to get started in the crafting process.
- Several smaller trees and bushes can no longer be used to gain wood-logs, stick to the bigger trees.
- Amount of grass in the world has been drastically reduced.
- Wall Upgrades now require a crafting table.
- When picking up smaller stones there is a 4% chance to pick-up iron ore instead. (can be increased through skills up to 12%)
- Crafting raid ladders requires now a crafting table.
- "Structure Removal Tool" renamed to Destruction Hammer. Requires now a workbench.
- Torch removed from the game and replaced with a camp-fire that will increase your stamina recovery and heal you up slowly while standing close to it. Don't get burned.
- Coordinate system has been removed. Instead you have to rely on your compass.
- The compass now always shows your flag if you placed one.
- You can only have 1 flag per server.
- Flags no longer require maintenance.
- Flags can be captured again.
- In the new UI under Options you can now remove your flag from the game-world.

Changes 21.1
- Fixed foundation placement.
- Fixed server list glitch.
- Fixed missing damage on lava.
- Fixed missing damage on water.
- Fixed chat commands (e.g. /suicide).

- Fixed capturing flags.
- Fixed loot on dinosaurs.
- Reduced amount of cannibal spawns.
- Slightly nerfed view-range of cannibals (from 90m to 70m).

Update 20 - The Ankylosaurus - Colin from JurassicPark:Aftermath joins!

In this patch we are introducing the Ankylosaurus. This dinosaur was previously created for the Stomping Land, we are happy about Vlad's involvement in Beasts of Prey as the quality of the models speak for them-self. To animate them we hired Kiko from Borderlands/Star Wars:The old republic to give the model some tripple AAA look and feel. The engine got updated to the latest Unity 5 version which is now officially released. In addition to that DirectX 11 is back on Windows while MAC / Linux versions now still work fine with DirectX11 features enabled on Windows Builds. Turrets in the game no longer react only on range, but will change target based on what they can "see". Also their view-range has been increased making raids much harder. To further improve this palisades now cause damage when standing on top of them.

The day/night cycle got adjusted to bring you some extra light during the night and to improve the graphics which are now based on direct light, ambient light and reflection light. The rendering-mode has been switch from forward to deferred which results in a better performance with multiple light sources around. In addition to these changes several bugs you reported have been fixed.

We are happy to announce that Colin from the Jurassic Park:Aftermath Project has joined us to create a new map for Beasts of Prey. Within the next weeks we will update you on this progress. With Vlad we already have a very talented 3D Artist, last week we talked to Robert Fabiani who also is very talented to create the Stegosaurus for us. With Vlad, Robert, Colin and Kiko on-board we have now a stunning team that is able to deliver AAA models, animations and game-worlds.

Patch Notes :
- Ankylosaurus has been added to the game.
- Updated client & server to the latest unity engine.
- Optimized client to improve performance slightly.
- Adjust day/night cycle and graphic effects.
- The night is now slightly brighter on close range but darker on the far.
- Turrets now take line of sight into account, no longer just aiming at the closest target.
- Turret range has been increased from 45m to 65m.
- Palisades now cause damage when walking/standing on them.
- Adjusted client-code to address vanishing walls/structures (Please confirm!)
- Fixed a bug in the main menu.
- Server now loads and stores data much faster.
- Fixed Fall-Damage.
- Fixed several visuals on structures.
- Fixed several animations on the dinosaurs.
- Official servers received a full wipe.

I still have high hopes for this game. This has been the only dinosaur hunting game I have kept returning to.

Though Updates are only so often I really hope you guys don't give up on this project.
The world needs a good dinosaur game and I think this could be it if the right updates are made.

I have been enjoying it so far but more building options, weapons and dinosaurs would be fantastic!

Keep it up!

Ok, I've played about 5 hours now as of this post and I must say, being able to play solo/local game is the best feature ever for a survival game. It's giving me a chance to learn how to play instead of loading in and with 2 hours running around like other games and boom dead.. wasted 2 hours and didn't get anything done, this game I have a partial fort build already and I've died once. Took on some cannibals without a real weapon, so had it coming. IF the devs don't abandon this game like one of the other early access games I played, it has the potential to be an amazing game.

So far, one of the best games I've ever got! Ive seen videos on when it first came out i thought it looked horrible. But ever since that, this game made so much progress that i had to buy it! It has made so much progress and way more to come too! The developer works very hard running the whole game by himself along with model makers and such, it just has so much hard work put into it. The forum is the friendliest community i had ever been to online and they answer all your questions in a nice manner no matter how simple they are. Back to the game though, people give this game bad reviews even though it is just perfect!

Although it has issues and glitches, i am completely assured that a game like this has a lot of potential and one day will be a great success. Although now there are cannibals that teleport, tyrannasaurs that can walk through mountains, and not the friendliest people on the PvP servers, someday this will be an amazing game, besides, most of these minor bugs are ejoyable.

** These are my initial thoughts on the game as it stands at this point and are in no way meant to encourage or discourage purchase **
*Also (mildly) satirical*

BoP has potential but, being an alpha, still leaves a lot to be desired. Below are a couple things I've noticed in the short time I've played.

The menus have limited options and are clunky; I would personally like a very clear cut way to set up a private game with friends as that is our (my friends and I) prefered play style over going online with a bunch of randos. If you gotta get murdered for your dino leather, etc, then it's nice to know the guy carving his initials into your spleen is someone you know and trust rather than some dorito crumb covered neckbeard in a far off basement angrily pleasuring himself to the image of your corpse.
*coughs* Anyway.....There is an annoying bug that causes your inventory to disappear until you logout then back in to the server; This seems to happen when trying to craft. i.e. I went to turn a quantity of logs into planks (like ya do) and after one log was turned into a plank said plank and all other materials and items in my inventory just... vanished. As stated, relogging will solve this problem... temporarily.... like every time I try to make a plank I have to relog. Not the best solution.
The raptors or whatever they are... the little bipedal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s that enjoy nomming your leg... are hard to hit with your axe or knife. What I mean is that I thought simply being within arms reach and swinging would result in showing the scaley fiend whatfor, but apparently you need to do some sort of contortionist routine until you get just the right angle to hit the bugger. I would have much rather used a gun, but well.... I haven't been able to get to the stage of finding/making a gun yet, so axe it is.

Having said all that, I don't regret buying BoP. I hope this game lives up to the potential it has. I'm going to say I recommend it (there really should be a neutral option) because of the afformentioned potential and what looks to be a relatively proactive development team.

As of update 21:

Welcome to Breasts of Play! Or rather walking simulator 2015. or rather "how to ---- up your game developers" simulator 2015.

Yes ALL of those titles would be better title for this game then Beasts of Prey, why do I say that? Because there are no "beasts" in this game.

Let me elaborate for you... describing my latest experience in BoP. I log on the day of update 21, I find a nice US public server, I log on, start collecting rocks (you pick them up now) and gathering wood. The server I’m playing on crashes and all my data is erased.

I dip my head in a bowl of cold water, wait two days and play again when the official pve server is on . I log onto the official pve server. Start the usual rock/wood gathering elements. Sees no dinosaurs but a few packs of compy and some cannibles. Walks and gathers, walks and gathers, walks and gathers.

Night time now.

Walks and gathers, walks and gathers, walks and gathers. Suddenly I get caught behind a mountain (which makes your screen pitch black due ot there being no moonlight). I see two cannibals run in front of me and attack me. I take damage and run like holy hell! I run, I run, I run, I run and finally I run out of stamina and dodge and weave striking my attacker with my knife, finally I succumbed to my attackers and to my sanity and log off. I log back on and respawn in some random area of the island with no marker to point me to my stuff that I lost. I log off, this time for good.

I don't even bother going to the PVP server for a few reasons:
1. People hack and abuse glitches to kill others.
2. People will kill you and steal your items for no reason.
3. Everyone who plays on it hasn't hit puberty yet.
4. Pvp is a cheap stunt pulled by developers to get you to play their game, a good game will have good PVE too.

I want to take a moment to say something people, I do not hate this game, I do not hate the developers, I want to see this game be a great game.

But yah see the problem with BoP, really isn't BoP.... it's the developers who CONSISTANTLY add new content into the game with ignoring key elements of the game and without fixing any previous glitches/problems with the game, as well as seem to block out any good and sane advice given to them by those who post on their forums.

Amd it took them two months to do this?

Sure the island is new and the graphics are a bit clearer with a few new crafting items to toy around with but all in all it's the same stuff that the developers have been trying to sell since I FIRST did this post back in Alpha 16.

Buy the game if you want to hold on to it till launch (which hopefully won't be a cashgrab) or want to support the devs because right now there's no real reason to play or own this game otherwise.

2/10 - don't buy this game, don't even look at it, it's a walking/gathering simulator and nothing more.

Have you ever welded barbed wire to a metal rod, rubbed it in poison oak, and then preceeded to place it into your butt. No, no worries buy this game and in twenty minutes you will know the feeling.

Jokes aside:

Very terribly made dinosaurs
Very bad AI (Cannibals teleport, and can hit you from 30 feet away without even swinging at you)
Only 3 dinosaurs
By far worst control scheme i have ever seen
Very Highly over priced
Completely unclear gameplay (Crafting makes zero sense and at one point i got lost while trying to smelt an iron ingot)

Totally not worth it, overpriced for what it is and the developers took about 6 months to add a single new dinosaur instead of fixing the countless problems with this game. I couldnt look you in the face and say that this game was worth it and still live with myself.

It has sooo much potential to be great but there are a ton of issues. Dinosaurs still walk through my house sometimes and dmg me while doing so. Guns do virtually no damage to dinosaurs, a heasshot should do something extra ....... But I still find myself playing just because I can build a castle of wood and stone and stare at dinosaurs while doing so . If the developers do not get lazy It wil be amazing.

This game has come a longgg way from when i first got this. the gameplay is very fun, graphics are excellent, and since theres been updates, patches,it keeps me wanting to come back for more to see what else i can build and explore. The developer DOES listen to peoples request and fixes things as he gets reports of problems existing ingame and community. So far ive built many big fortresses and many other things available in the working tables to craft . Now that theres a newer Unity build coming with a newer map...i cant wait to get into rebuilding and exploring everything once again. Love this game soo addicting!!!! Great work Burnz and all who appreciate his work, to the trolls who got banned and are writing bad reviews beacuase of it..its your loss cause its only words in my book, bad reviews from people who got caught and banned shouldnt even have the right to leave a review.

To start: Bought this game for me and three of my gaming clan buddies.

  1. Dinosaur models are great, can't wait to see more variety show up and see the new AI that they'll be implementing
  2. Beautiful map and flora. Wondering if we'll see procedural mapping later on.
  3. Great concept and hopefully better execution than stomping land had.
  4. Great crafting system, would like to see some expansion in regards to food and drink systems. (berries, fruit, vegetables etc)

  1. The introduction should only happen on first play through or major changes to map or such. Seeing it both on start of game and everytime you connect to a server gets tedious.
  2. Servers are too few, would like to see either more official servers, maybe one in the western hemisphere, as well as more regular server wipes on the private servers. Too many times have I spawned and seen like fourty bases around me, and turrets left and right. Makes me not want to play a PvP server because you can't really leave spawn grounds.
  3. On topic of spawning, there should be dynamic spawn as long as you don't spawn right in the middle of a dino nest. Makes it more interesting to try and find each other, but also prevents the spawn boxing that happens with bases just outside of spawn area.

  • make there more middle ground tech. So far it seems like you get base resources and can tech up pretty quickly to having a gun. Maybe start off with a sling, or a spear, then a bow, then a cross bow, etc etc.
  • more advance skillsets. I've seen the concept ideas of friendly and hostile skill trees. Would work great with karma system. Only issue is that would carry out onto the PvE servers. Can't be friendly or hostile really. Recommend just being able to level up into which ever one. Creates a cool dynamic amongst tribes, and allows for specialization. For instance, explosives expert. That way you don't have five guys with all the same skills who can all just wreak havoc. Means you have to wait for your tribe to get on to pull off a raid. Would be cool
  • [/olist]

All in all I do enjoy the game. Just cause have a long list of dislikes and suggestions doesn't mean it isn't good. Definitely grab the game, or grab on sale, and try it out. With a strong community we could see a game with the enjoyment factor of Rust, but with that unique Dinosaur element! Heck they can even make it so you start off as a caveman and get smarter as you go along each day based on food and training. That'd be cool!

I don't know why this game got such a bad reputation. Yeah, there is a few bugs, but come on it's Early Access! There is no game breaking bug. This game is exactly what I expected. It's a fun, time-wasting game. I know only about 60% of the people gave a good review about this, but you should definitly get this.

- Easy to understand and get the hang of.
- Fun and easy.
- Great models.
- Above average animations. (This could use some work, but still good)
- Barely ever have ping problems

- To play singleplayer you have to make your own server. (Since update 19 you just have to play original version)
- Hard to find out where sounds are coming from.
- Optimization. (It's good, but could be more customizable)
- Low amount of servers. (I know more will be added when more people get this game)

These cons are not finale. Anyday the creators could fix them and add more pros. That is what Early Access is. It's a time when the community could help out the makers and help make the game better.

I give this game 8/10. I plan on it getting better than that in a few months. Can't wait to see the finale product of this game.

From seeing how this game has progressed its going well. though there are still issues. the devs are always very good with the community And always update. These devs talk to you and listen to community input and feed back from there fans and Customers. As this is Early Access I do not believe in giving soemthing indepth. I Recommend it fdrom soemone who loves Dinosaurs hunting them etc. From a Game i picked up for 35 dollers I have gotten my moneys worth as far as I view it.

---Review Update: Dec, 2nd 2014:
Hacker encounters in 2 hours of play: 0. Maybe they did something, maybe they didnt... But I'm happy to update this to say it looks promising.

4/10 with hax gone.

Initial Review:

Got knifed to death by a dude hacking god mode after farming for an hour.

Hey, developers, #1 priority in MMO game development is preventing hackers/glitching. You've obviously not done this.

If it wasn't for the hacking the game would be *barely* playable. I was actually enjoying myself until the hacker came along.

If it's that effing easy, the game is broken. If they're tweaking features and adding new stuff when it's THAT easy to hack the game, the game is broken.

I will write a full and detailed review when this game becomes hack-free (otherwise, playable.) and it will probably be a positive review. For now, two thumbs down and 0/10.
