PvE Server and Patch 10.1/10.2 Notes

Hello everyone,
as some of your requested we have added a PvE Server today with special rules for those of your that do not enjoy PvP enviroments. The PvE server has the following different rules :

- No damage to other players.
- No damage to structures that do not belong to you.
- No lootdrop on death.
- No turrets.

Patch Notes from yesterday were missing so here they are :

- Added option to disable loot-drop on servers.
- Added option to disable player damage on servers.
- Fixed the oil tower. It can now be crafted.
- Fixed dinosaur settings on private servers. Default is dinosaurs enabled now.
- Fixed a lagspike.
- Fixed indestructable turret.
- Fixed a targeting bug with turrets.
- Fixed bed spawns.

- Fixed turret bug.
- Fixed resource spawning.

Patch 10 - Rise of the crafters

Today with patch 10 our game changes a lot. First off, the days of loosing nothing on death are over. We enabled full inventory drop and while this might sound dramatic at first we are confident that with the new mechanics in place surviving in our game is still easier than in other survival games. The main reason why we think so is the metal safe, this item allows you to securely store your items - even when it's destroyed. When destroyed you can rebuild it and your items will still be there. So when you are heading out of your base think carefully what you take with you and how long and how far you will venture out.

With the changes it also matters a lot now where you are building your base, while it might be great to build on water for protection you cannot build mining drills there which means that you still have to leave your base to either reach your mining outpost or look for rocks to manually mine. Mining drills are much slower than manual mining, but they provide to you at a constant rate and you build your base around it for maximum protection.

To increase your protection we have added the first automated defense turret that will open fire to everyone who does not belong to your tribe either when it's getting attacked or when getting too close. It currently does not consume fuel or energy but this will be implemented at a later stage when we are adding generators to the game.

Oil Spawns are now random so if you found one you can decide if you want to defend for just a hour or a full day. It's your decision if you place the big oil tower you'll get the 10x amount of oil but you have to defend it for 24 hours as it takes a full day. Or you build the small oil pumps, they give you only a fraction of the oil but only need to be defend for 1 hour. Oil can now be refined in the refinery which will give you access to fuel (and plastic later). Fuel is needed by the mining drills and we intend to make more utilities depend on it. In the future the generators will supply your structures with electricity and will consume fuel as well.

Additionally we have added the rocket launcher to the game. It does much less damage than C4 but gives you the opportunity to attack defense turrets that you'll have a direct line of sight to and take down lower HP structures.

Based on your votes our priority in this patch has been the performance. We were able to increase it quite a bit by changing the procedual terrain engine and optimizing a lot of code. So instead of having your client constantly generate new terrain in the background we are now shipping a pre-made world which grows with each update. This way we still have procedually generated terrain and this allows us to add biomes like deserts, european forests etc. to the game. Also, if you are eligible for the extra key it will now show up in the login scene after logging in.

Early supports will now see their additional steam key in the login scene.

- Client: Fixed several performance spikes.
- Client: Improved loading times.
- Client: Added more anti-cheat routines.
- Client: Fixed several minor glitches.
- Oil now spawns everywhere, just like stone.
- Large Rocks have been added to the game. Build the mining drill on them to gather their resources.
- You can now craft the rocket launcher.
- You can now craft rockets again.
- You can now craft the refinery.
- You can now craft the mining drill.
- You can now craft the turret.
- You can now craft the oil pump.
- Fuel has been added to the game.
- Oil Tower is now a blueprint.
- Foundation can be placed on ground now so you can build wooden defenses around smaller structures.
- Placing a tent now serves as a global spawn point for all tribe members in case they do not have a bed.
- Tent can now be destroyed (300 HP, melee & explosive damage)
- Spawn priorities are now: Logout position if you did not die -> Tent -> Bed.
- Some weapons received adjustments in rate of fire, recoil and rate of fire.
- You can now craft the refinery to convert your oil to fuel (1 Oil = 10 Fuel).
- Oil Towers collect a total of 60 Oil. 1 every 10 minutes.
- Oil Pumps collect a total of 6 Oil. 1 every 10 minutes.
- You can now craft the mining drill which will gather stone for you automatically.
- You can now craft the projectile defense turret that will shoot everyone who does not belong to your tribe when enabled.
- You now loose your inventory when dying. Craft and put your items in the metal safe where they are safe, when the metal safe gets destroyed you can just rebuild it elsewhere and your items are back.
- If you die you now loose your inventory and a loot bag is spawned at your last position.

Beasts of Prey is a survival sandbox MMOFPS, featuring a huge randomly generated world that increase based on the population of the game. Danger lurks everywhere and will make your struggle for survival even tougher. Carnivorous beasts may be lying in wait behind every tree and waiting to make you their prey.

I know this game back in the old days when they had the first trailer.

The game needs a lot of work and is difficult to understand.

The game looks amazing if you put it on max settings but its not realistic.

The game is colorfull and looks really nice and can be much fun, but i cant say if it will be fun for you, the person who reads this.

I wont say anything about buying this... no (yes) or (no) because they released this game to soon.
From what i have seen... sure its a funny game but the video here on (steam) is Prototype, not the game you will play.

Its a funny game hehe sure it is but...totally different then other dino games.
I say take a gamble. :)

This game has alot of potential! It is already strangely addictive, can only get better in the future! Be aware of the fact it's still early acces, it's far from perfect but with a very dedicated Dev team BoP will eventuelly reach perfection. The dev's are on the job and very communicative! If you want to a part of the creation and polishing of BoP buy it, if you expect an already polished then I'm not sure if that would be a wise choice.

Release Day Review:

Beasts of Prey is an Alpha game. This means that there are heavily unfinished features and it is a bare-bones game. Personally I like my games to be full-fledged and ready to roll, but this dev team seems very committed to their game and ready to rock.

The game is a heavy survival-island type game. You can build custom structures or build a pre-built structure for the cost of some lumber that counts as a starter home. You can make all sorts of weapons provided you have the materials for the blueprints and the weapon parts (I.E. Pistol Barrel, Pistol Grip, etc).

And you're essentially supposed to be surviving other players and Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs as of the time of this review are disabled due to some difficulties with a lot of people having lag with them around. Also they tend to run a lot faster than the player so it was kind of OP even though I never really had a problem with it.

The gameplay is pretty nice, the crafting is a bit plain but straightforward. It tells you the materials you need and unless you can't read, you should be able to craft everything provided you can find a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rock. Rocks are the things that contain ores which you obviously need (Iron, magnesium, etc) and a lot of the time it's pretty ridiculous except at night when people aren't on. I think most of the playerbase is in the United States but I'm not sure, so I would go by those times.

Nevertheless it's not hard to get wood, only ores/rock because you really have to compete with other people for it.

As for the Dinosaurs, they do mass amounts of damage to you. Most are only there for looks (anyone who knows dinosaurs means this is the herbivores) and the only ones that really come after you are the carnivores. However there have been some issues with invisible dinosaurs so it's kinda sucked.



PvP is another factor in this game and one I wish wasn't there. I'm not sure why all these survival games aren't going co-op survival rather than 'HEY LET'S GIVE EVERYONE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ♥♥♥♥ WITH EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IN THEIR HOMES'. I really like the 7 Days to Die servers that are PvE only but I don't have money to start a server for this game that's PvE only, unfortunately.

It's pretty ridiculous on the community server, so much so that I started a private server just to play bymyself to advance through the tech tree. I barely got a bed out before a few people had guns and were at a major advantage over everyone else, kinda ridiculous IMO but whatever. Alpha, alpha, alpha.

Also on the topic of PvP, a friend was highly interested in Rust so he's been playing it since release and he said Rust had a big problem with people being able to take stuff through walls. And yes, that is indeed a problem in this game also. I had my bed stolen, my workbench stolen and I'm sure if they could have taken my furnace, they would have taken that too.

Survival Aspect

Yeah that's pretty much it. For an Alpha game though it looks gorgeous (Please no comparisons to The Forest, it's a single player game for gods' sakes, just shut up) and the dinosaurs, weapons, structures are just so detailed it's marvelous.

However it does have its fair share of bugs and you WILL be frustrated with the game after a few hours if you play on the Community server, so just be prepared to be griefed and friendless for quite some time.

6/10 only because... (otherwise it would be 7/10)...

The pricing is stupid, would recommend for the stage that it's in to wait until the price drops/a sale. These literally UNFINISHED games are getting higher priced than normal single player indie games that wait until they're fully finished before release. It's ridiculous.

Early Access Review
After having spent many hours with this game since its release I recommend it - at least to those who know and understand what Early Access means. If you are expecting a final release and a polished complete game then wait for the final release. If you want to get into the game as it develoopes then this is the time. There is quite a lot to keep you busy while you wait for what the next update will bring and even with the usual assorted bugs and issues that go along with any early alpha release the game is very playable. I have not played on the official server, mainly because ther is not a lot of anti-griefing options so opted for a private server with known co-op players. Dino hunting and killing is fun even if right now all you get is the satisfaction of living through it and leveling the dino. Building is complete enough to give you plent of options and it appears that a great deal more to build is around the corner. Of course you hve to do the usualy resource gathering to build but the dino's wandering around do give you a chance to do so. Griefing, of course, is a problem - isn't it always - and on a public server you might have more problems with players then dino's so I would suggest a private server with a whitelist function of some sort or IP block of all but the players permitted so you can get a chance to enjoy the game. The dino's are amazing and you can kill them but they are a challenge. Nothing like standing round a dead dino you helped take down who has a head bigger then you :)

It's tough to write a recommendation based on early access because the game simply isn't finished. Currently the game has many frustrating bugs and mechanics that would make a lot of people not want to play. For example, if you own a house and place a crafting table to close to a wall, anybody can steal it. There are ways to protect yourself from this such as taking the time to create a large fortress around it, but never-the-less it's there.

There are two reasons I recommend this game. First is because this game has a ton of potential. A single server where each person can establish their own little fortress equipt with turrets, radar, and guard towers. Tribes fighting over land. Dinosaurs chasing vehicles and getting gunned down or catching up and ripping people apart!

I should mention the biggest thing missing right now is the dinosaurs which brings me to my second reason to recommend the game. The dev team. This is a first time developement team who takes its community seriously and are always looking for suggestions and feedback. It was a rough first couple days due to the devs realizing the NPC dinosaurs were causing massive lag. They immidiately reacted by disabling the dinosaurs which increased server stability. Within a day multiple patches were released fixing bugs. Follow the forums for Beasts of Prey you will see how active the devs are, posting and replying constantly.

I recommend this game to anyone who wants to take a ride on an early access game. There will be lots broken, lots fixed, and lots changed. This is as much a learning experience for the player as it is for this first time dev team as you will see how a game progresses from potential to reality.

Edit: Lag spikes have been fixed for me as of update 5.
