What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We believe Steam Early Access is a fantastic platform for getting feedback from the community, making it a wise choice for an indie developer like us. After a successful Kickstarter campaign we are reassured that we are on the right track and we're always excited when our fans share more of their great ideas!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our plan is to roll out a major update every 3-4 weeks and we expect the game to reach final release quality Q2 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will feature:
  • Oodles of random loot to assemble your guns, armor and group upgrades
  • Modular enemies with combinable special abilities, modular elite enemies with exchangeable body parts and modular multi-segmented bosses
  • A variety of generated missions to choose from with a rich, layered environment full of hazards to slam your foes into and calamities like raid bombardments and goop tides that blast friend and foe alike
  • An overarching storyline and missions that advance the story, with a focus on fleshing out the characters and setting

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“From the get go we will feature multiplayer co-op with mouse+keyboard and basic controller support. Fully functional rule based procedural level assembly system, randomized loot and basic character progression. There will be monsters in the city catacombs to hunt, loot to grind and a few mission types.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During Early Access the game will be cheaper. After Early Access the game's price will be increased to the final price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“If you have an idea for a feature, a boss fight, or maybe some awesome new co-op dynamic – we would love to hear you out! Here you can find our forums, feel free to ask questions directly or post your suggestions. Let your imagination run wild (-;”

Klassenkampf is live!

The newest DieselStörmers update “Klassenkampf” is live and we bring you the full changelog!

One of the most important updates is a dedicated primary weapon per class that was re-tweaked to feel ‘right’ from the get go.
It’s not your most powerful tool, as it has downsides (e.g. short range of the shotgun), but it should still feel good as your main weapon.

Every character has his or her own favorite weapon:
  • Stabbygale: Shotgun -> high damage at close range
  • Camille: Rocket Launcher -> a projectile that explodes on contact
  • Brecht: Machine Gun -> a reliable stream of bullets
  • Presto: Flame Thrower -> a piercing mid-range AoE
  • El Cazo: Sniper Rifle -> high bullet speed and damage

Updated special skills for our exemplary character Stabbygale (and infos regarding secondary weapons):

Stabbygale character is now equipped with:

Primary Weapon: Short-range Shotgun (Upside: no ammo needed; Downside: relatively low rate of fire and range)
Cooldown Ability: Harpoon Saw Blade (aimable / drags enemies into shotgun range / kills goblins ); serves to compensate for shotgun’s short range
Defensive Ability: Deflect Dash (deflects bullets and passes through enemies)
Passive Ability: Exploding Armor that kills/pushes away enemies each time the character receives damage
Secondary Weapons: can be found inside the levels (note: they have re-load time and break after a while so no need to spare them, just use the secondary when you have one! There will be more, no worries!)

New level design tweaks:
  • We thickened the black platforms and black chunk outlines so that you can clearly see where you have to go next. This change enhances the level guidance and better separates enemies from each other.
After the update we will have less variety in level chunks at first compared to the current build but a more meaningful level layout.

  • Also we added 5m separators between the chunks, to make sure it really feels like going down by a level.

  • New off-screen spawners are spawning waves based on invisible triggers now.

  • As you step on the trigger a clearly readable wave of enemies comes in from outside of the chunks towards you.

  • Regular spawners do not spit out enemies forever anymore, they are exhaustible now.

Hope you enjoy our update. As always feel free to comment and give feedback below or on our Dieselstormers forums!

Sneak peek into Class Warfare & first female stormer!

Listen up Stormers

The next update is almost here. And we call it: The Class Warfare Update. It is going to change some of the game play that we introduced with the rogue mission update.

First: There will be some significant changes to the characters, or classes. They will be equipped with an individual set of abilities, a unique armor and a base weapon, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. You cannot drop these or swap it with new weapons. Instead you’ll be able to pick up secondary weapons, which will compensate some of the base weapons weaknesses. The drawback is, that they will have a limited resource supply.

Second: We improved the level design. Exploration is an important part of the game, and our improvements take care of the overall readability of each level. We also adjusted the spawn point behavior. Currently they’ll activate and remain active as long as you are in its vicinity, constantly spawning new enemies. After the update they will be triggered by certain events and spawn enemies less often, but in greater numbers.

After the update more fun moments in the game should come from having an awesome base class that plays in the unique way, finding cool toys, and making the right decisions relative to current resources, where those resources can change significantly from one game to the next.

To give you an example

We present: Stabbygale (Our first FEMALE Stormer!)

A former barmaid in one of Ravensdale’s shady taverns, Abigail Arling had to witness the gradual corruption of her patrons first hand. After then witnessing how her best friend was first harassed and then torn apart by orcs before her very eyes, she snapped. Abigail picked up the shotgun from the beneath the bar counter and went on a killing spree. As slivers of her sanity came back to her, she claimed a Dieselstörmer Armor and joined the only band of misfits still willing to face Hektör von Garg and his army of monsters – The Dieselstörmers.

Weapon: Shotgun
Strength: High damage at close range
Weakness: Limited Range, damage decreases with range
Active ability: a retractable buzz saw that pulls enemies towards you and right into your shotgun range for execution. This ability is triggered by the player and will have to cool down before it can be used again.
Passive ability: Whenever Stabbygale gets hit, it sets off an explosion, damaging every enemy in close-quarters range and hurling them away. This ability is triggered automatically EVERY time Stabbygale gets hit and costs valuable hit points.

This is just a sneak peek into the upcoming “Class Warfare” update. Once we have released the “Class Warfare Update” will post a complete change-log with more information.

About This Game

Dieselstörmers is a roguelike action platformer for up to four players in local and online multiplayer mode. Discover the crazy city of Ravensdale and its sprawling undercity …
Just join the game and start shooting the damned monsters – you’re a Dieselstörmer, a trained battlemachine and a freedom fighter, and you WANT this damned city to be yours again!
So GEAR UP, RECRUIT! And join the fight for Ravensdale!

Run 'n' Gun Mayhem

You’re a member of an elite rebel squad: The Dieselstörmers. Well equipped, but outnumbered by your enemies. To survive, you’ll have to cleverly collaborate with your friends. Combine your attacks, use the armor and weapons upgrades to your advantage. Find upgrades to your weapons to increase your defensive power, attack range or damage output. Increase your mobility with perks to reach new areas in the map or blast your enemies with bouncing, piercing, incinerating, shocking, explosive, goopy, and many, many more weapon and armor upgrades. Of course you can also decide to drop your current weapon and give that shiny new surge lance a chance.

Roguelike Action

Dieselstörmers combines classic roguelike action with gorgeous 3D graphics, classic platforming character controls and RPG elements.

Permadeath is real and you’ll lose your equipment and upgrades, but experience points are yours to keep. Gaining levels will grant you perks, making the next round easier and getting you one step closer to defeating the final boss.

Character progress is faster in comparison to the old Dieselstörmers – each playthrough rewards you with new items or classes. That, plus achievements and secrets, makes DieselStörmers and endless fun, providing a new experience with each playthrough.

In contrast to the old game, each level is up to five times bigger and consists of the already known town biome as well as four more – Underground Factory, Sunken City, Natural Caves and Ancient Ruins – each with its on theme and appeal.

Customize your character with randomly dropped equipment and stackable upgrades and improve the abilities of your base class on the fly instead of assembling your weapons in the HQ.

Online and couch multiplayer

The Dieselstörmers campaign is for 1-4 players and can be played in online and couch co-op mode. New players can join or leave an existing game at any time – without consequences to the remaining players.
Multiplayer allows for team strategies like: flanking shielded enemies, deploying powerful lightning arcs between your teammates or herding fleeing enemies into a trap. Each character class comes with unique skills and perks. In the right balance, no amount of enemies can stop you.
Resources picked up by any player are awarded to all players!

Every session is new!

Our technology enables us to layer and combine predefined level chunks and to create meaningful level combinations with infinite replay ability. Templates and content slots are used to layer relevant content chunks within chunks, generating incredible diversity and supporting an ever-growing cast of enemies and hazards.

Early Access Version of the game includes

  • Couch co-op multiplayer (up to 4 players, controllers only, in a single player mission press "start" and then controller button "A" to join).

  • Bigger levels with an option to explore and uncover secrets.

Updaate:

TL;DR :LOCAL CO-OP is pretty damn fun

There's work to be done, but it's pretty damn good as is, and a superb step in the right direction from where it was. DieselStormers gots the stuff, and the game devs give a damn. There's better reviews that will go over mechanics and play flow, this ones just here to tell you I am impressed.

I feel it's good to leave this here so people can see that I used to have my doubts, but the devs have provided a better product.

*Original Review below Pre-Local-Co-Op update*

Purchased this game for local co-op. Non-worth value.

Think of it as free to play MMOs. They can join you but can't upgrade anything until they buy their own copy, cpu, and house with internet.

Same as fable 2 tag alongs, so they dont have to sit there and watch you enjoy it, they can join in and envy you as well!

*Also: No options to adjust visual settings besides screen resolution. Actually got to experience what it would look like to play on a 3DS on a 42" screen.

Excited to see what the future holds, hope they don't go starforge and get all money grabby. Hope they intergrate a real Local Co-op and head towards a more beautiful Trine experience with couch warriors sharing mead.

In the mean time going to play shoot many robots again (which is basically the same thing) on the Xbox 360, with 4 player Local Co-op, and all for free.

Dieselstormers feels like its paying homage to a rich history of retro run n' gun platformer games, and I love it despite the fact that I don't like retro games. Or platformers. In an era of gaming that seems to be all about flashy effects, realistic graphics and emergent story, it's nice to see that there are developers still focusing on rampant fun with a focus on mechanical skill and coordination.

This game is a blast.

Dieselstormers: A Tale of Two Orks

For every misguided youth of the last century who grew up on a healthy diet of Nintendo and Sega, run and gun platformers like the ubiquitous Contra were a staple of multiplayer gaming. Long before the days of online first person shooters with dozens of players from around the globe, technologically primitive children like ourselves would gather around our ginormous radiation emitting square televisions, fighting each other for a chance to wield the controller next. Everybody’s household on a weekend was sort of like Lord of Flies, except we had to blow into cartridges before the mayhem could begin.

Dieselstormers, the latest effort from Black Forest Studios, is reminiscent of those old school multiplayer shooters of the past, but without the broken controllers (and friendships). Despite having just entered Early Access on Steam, Dieselstormers is already quite polished for an alpha. Stylistically, the game stands out with a uniquely detailed art style and beautiful, colorful backgrounds. Weapons hit the various goblin enemies with a satisfying thud, and the controls are well executed with both keyboard and mouse and gamepad. Though a full featured single player campaign is already included, the real meat of the game is in the cooperative multiplayer experience, supporting up to four players at a time.

At the start of Dieselstormers, the player is taken to a main area which houses both their main crafting inventory and the mission selection portal. The first weapon given is a weak, ineffectual pistol, but with the completion of each successful mission another gun part and crafting piece is unlocked. Missions are short, generally taking around 5-10 minutes to complete. Multiplayer progress carries over to single player, so players are free to jump between modes as they choose.

Intriguingly, in multiplayer, your character remains alive at “death”, though with diminished powers and barely the ability to push enemies back. Upon a player finding a health pick up, the deceased will be revived. What’s most interesting is that death is not necessarily the end if both players die, as long as some sort of health can be found.

Of course, it must be remembered the game is early access and is still a bit buggy at the moment. During our multiplayer sessions, we had a few crashes and a bit of slowdown, but considering that this is an early alpha, the game shows great promise. Despite the minor issues we encountered, we found Dieselstormers to be quite enjoyable.

For the adventurous, the developers allow work in progress levels to be toggled in the options menu, what they call “construction site mode”. As the developers jokingly proclaim on the options page, “unfinished content can look like an ork’s backside and play like its underpants. You have been warned.” It’s nice to see a developer with a sense of humor, and of course Dieselstormers plays quite well, even in its early state. Of course, it’s not Black Forest Games’ first foray into the platformer genre, having developed the recent Giana Sisters titles. Expect Dieselstormers to only improve as time goes on.

Dieselstormers succeeds in bringing back that old school platformer vibe, and is the kind of game you can play over and over again with your friends, whether it be in bite sized sessions or for hours on end. Pick up one copy, or grab four for some intense side scrolling co-op action. It is available for Early Access purchase on Steam.

Early Access Review
This game is a RPG action game with guns and gear. Play with up to 4 friends in co-op multiplayer mode or you can play single player. The graphics are beautiful with music that suits the game. Tutorial is helpful with easy to learn controls. Randomized levels makes the game replayable. Goal is to reach the boss at the end and kill the boss to obtain loot drops. I am looking forward to the full version of this game.
