Just Updated

Our latest free content update includes a new challenge in the form of The London Tower Prison, inspired by one of the most famous British historical sites. How will you escape?

About This Game

The Escapists provides the opportunity of experiencing a light-hearted insight into everyday prison life and, as is the case with all inmates, the main objective is escape! While under the careful watch of the guards, players will need to go about their daily duties clandestinely secreting useful objects from under their captors’ noses. Potential escapees will learn how to craft seemingly innocuous items into useful tools and even weapons as well as using them to execute cunning diversionary tactics.

Players will need to learn when to keep in line, utilising their time sensibly as they develop their own personal plans of escape. Learning the prison’s daily routines and spotting opportunities are all part of life behind bars. Working out potential routes and even misdirecting guards soon become second nature.

Whilst remembering to attend roll-call, holding down their job and keeping their fellow inmates on side, players are can also benefit from advancing their character's statistics through various means including boosting their intellect and exercising regularly. Balance mundane routine with careful planning to attain your ultimate goal - escape and freedom!

Features

  • 8 Fully operational prisons complete with routines to give you a flavour of how it *really* is inside!
  • 10 Separate job opportunities for you to sink your teeth into… If you have the knowledge to earn and hold down these employment paths of course!
  • 185+ Unique Items for you to seek out and perhaps even craft useful items with. (Team17 fully endorse the use of various weapons such as ‘shivs’, ‘nunchucks’ and ‘maces’ – within a fictional setting of course!).
  • Various Favour types for you to tackle offered up by inmates – You wouldn't want to go upsetting them now, would you?
  • Highly opinionated and incredibly funny inmates and guards to keep you on your toes as well as providing entertainment!
  • Multiple escape routes for you to work out and achieve the title of ‘The Escapist’!
  • Multiple save slots so you can have more than one escape attempt on the go!
  • Steam Achievements to strive for.
  • Steam Leaderboards – Once you have escaped see how you fared against other successfully escaped players!
  • Prison Editor – Create from scratch your very own confinement masterpiece and share it with the community!

The idea is solid. maintain your prison life while secretly plotting your escape. The problem falls on the mechanics. Stats and relationships fall extremely fast. The tutorial tells you almost nothing of value. Crafting unlocks are hard to come by making the game frustrating without a wiki or tutoial.

The worst offender, though, is the guard AI. They apparently hire all guards from the psychic network. Guard finds random thing in random place: blam you're caught. Guard is walking by a dark room at night and instantly notices the vent is open: blam caught. Guard goes to check your room that has a hole covered and all contraband smuggled out: he decides to look behind the poster, blam again. You've been crawling through the vents you wait until things are clear climb down: blam guard come speeding down the hallway befor you can react. And, of course if you are caught, they know instantly where everything you've set up is and undo it.

I want to like this game, but it feels more like a chore than fun. There is some charm and some entertaining things that can happen, but there is little pay-off to what you put in.

I recently came back to this wondering why I hadn't played it in a while. Then I remembered: it's really boring. After you do one breakout it's the same thing every prison. Not worth the money.

Simon told me to get him a muffin.
At exercise period he got in a fight and lost.
I checked his pockets and found a muffin.
I stole his muffin and then gave it back to him at dinner.
Favour complete. $21 earned.
11/10 would sell someone their own muffin again.

First off, I got this game for 6 dollars, and that is the best deal I have ever seen. This game is absoloutly incredible. The guard`s and inmates`s AI is fantastic. The cops will pay less attention to you if you stick to daily routine, but keep an eye on you if they think your up to something. Its almost like this is an online game and the cops are actual players, but there not!! I love this game so much! There is lots of different prisons so if you think you`d get bored right away, your terribly wrong.

Great game, even at full price. It'll put your planning and organisational skills to the test, and when you finally escape from your first prison, you'll feel like you achieved something amazing.

Highly recommended, especially if it is on sale.

The Escapist - helping you escape from reality by immersing you into... reality?!

Let me explain. The Escapist is an in-depth, yet somewhat simplistic, simulator centered around you, an everyday con, trying to break free from prison. Achieving freedom isn't easy, so get ready to make friends with your fellow prisoners, work, work out, buy, collect and craft... and try at all time to not drop the soap.

So, how is jail? There are several main prisons, escalating in difficulty. Each one of them has its own rules you must follow, tight security, number of guards and cameras. They differ in design and prompt you to vary your strategy and plans. Furthermore, you can create your own shutter, so go ahead, build your wall.

The Escape. Even when you're not following the prison schedule, you have to be planning out and following your own. Your con has to decide whether to collect some forks and go chip at the wall, or whether to get a spoon and start digging. Will he work out a few extra hours or study at the library. Time is valuable and everything you do matters!

Arts and crafts... and shivs. There are many different items you can find around by rummaging through other cells, or you can just buy them off of other prisoners. Magazines, chocolate, duct tape and lighters all come in handy. Some more advanced items, however, require to be crafted, like weapons, uniforms, keys and tools - this is where studying pays off.

Talking about paying. A valued prisoner, is one who helps out his buddies. Doing favours for other prisoners is a big part of The Escapist. This is how you earn their trust and respect. Plus in return they'll do the digging for ya'. Some cons will want you to find them a specific item, while others'll want you to beat up a foe of theirs. Packing a punch requires working out, so spend a few extra hours at the gym.

So where's the simplicity? The Escapist is an indie title, with colourful pixelated graphics and a friendly interface. This fools a lot of people into thinking that the game is simplistic. Underneath the flamboyant cover art lies a manual of a game. Learning all the mechanies will take you some time and your will be prone to looking up guides.

Final verdict: So after all the blabbering is The Escapist worth checking out? Absolutely yes! I invested in this game while it was still Early Access and boy did it pay off! Not only will this game entertain you, but it will devour your time, as you're planning along your next big escape. So get it and put your own little twist on The Shawshank Redemption.
