What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access is the perfect fit for The Escapists! We’ve got all the lovely ingredients in there to mould it into a wonderful game and with continued commitment and listening to welcomed community feedback we know we’ll produce something special.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“By their very nature Early Access games don’t have a set release date. The Escapists is already in a very playable state and plans are in place to add even more cool features. If you pressed me I’d say absolutely everything would be wrapped up by mid to end 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

The Early Access version of The Escapists includes an exclusive prison map - Fhurst Peak Correctional. The Early Access version and final release will be very different indeed. There’ll be a ton more content, more escape routes, more crazy items, just more more and more! Oh, and a whole load more polish to boot.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is shaping up just nicely… We’re pretty much at a point where we need players and feedback. Early access will allow us to sit and listen making future builds even better!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we're offering The Escapists at a special Early Access price as a thank you to all the inmates who start planning their route to freedom early.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Greatly… We’re entirely open to any and all ideas. As far as The Escapists is concerned – it’s all good. We’ll be after all manner of ideas regarding the game as a whole and look forward to hearing from players. We'd like to encourage the community to be vocal - ideas matter and will help shape The Escapists into the best game we know it can be.”

The Escapists nominated for TIGA Game of the Year 2014

Prisoners,

Whilst there is much discussion outside the prison on whether you should have the right to vote in democratic elections, we've decided to try an experiment.

The Escapists has been nominated for TIGA's Game of the Year 2014. For an early access game that's just a few months old, this is a staggering achievement. In order for The Escapists to win this award, your votes are needed to secure the top spot.

Therefore, all prisoners are required to click on this link and submit a vote for The Escapists:

Thank you for your time,

The Great Escapists Update - Available Now!

Prisoners!
You’ve had it too easy.

This week’s update will take your prison experience and add copious amounts of hardship. Within you’ll find a new prison: Stalag Flucht, an old Prisoner of War (POW) camp. Say goodbye to your HD TVs and your cosy relationships with the guards, this is a zero-tolerance hell-hole equipped with some shocking features; you are there to stay.

Other tweaks have been made to the game’s difficulty across the board, too.

Guards are getting pretty tired of your hoarding antics. A complete prison sweep will now take place any time an escape attempt is discovered; air vents, underground tunnels and roofs will be cleared of any illegal items. Trowels are no longer weapons of mass destruction and plastic cutlery isn’t what it used to be. Leaping off the roof onto objects below is no longer an option. An educational campaign amongst the prison staff has left the guards much more able to recognise powdered up wall when they see it and, when they do, expect trouble. Oh, and if you’re in a fight, you can expect some heat from the guards – regardless of “who started it”.

It’s not all horrific. We’ve added in 2 new workout routines and lowered the fatigue drain for working out. Four more jobs are available to keep you out of trouble. You’ll find better stuff in other inmates’ desks. There are new jingles in the game and, perhaps one of the most requested features in the Early Access community has been added; multiple save slots.

About This Game

The Escapists provides players the opportunity of experiencing a light-hearted insight into everyday prison life with the main objective being that of escaping! Players will have to keep in line and juggle their time sensibly as they form their personal plan of escape; working out potential routes to use as well as being incredibly smart and clever in using what seem like harmless items to craft and create various weaponry and escape tools which help aid the player in their ultimate goal of escaping.

Players are tasked with advancing their character's statistics through various means such as exercising regularly and ensuring to boost their intellect as well… Whilst remembering to attend roll call, hold down their job and keep the inmates on side if you're to be successful in trading with them and ultimately… Don't forget to escape!

  • 2 Fully operational prisons complete with routines to give you a flavour of how it *really* is inside!
  • 6 Separate job opportunities for you to sink your teeth into… If you have the knowledge to earn and hold down these employment paths of course!
  • 100 + Unique Items for you to seek out and perhaps even craft useful items with. (Team17 fully endorse the use of various weapons such as ‘shivs’, ‘nunchucks’ and ‘maces’ – within a fictional setting of course!).
  • Various Favour types for you to tackle offered up by inmates – You wouldn’t want to go upsetting them now, would you?
  • Highly opinionated and incredibly funny inmates and guards to keep you on your toes as well as providing entertainment!
  • Multiple escape routes for you to work out and achieve the title of ‘The Escapist’!
  • Steam Leaderboard – Once you have escaped see how you fared against other successfully escaped players!

  • Prison Editor – Create from scratch your very own confinement masterpiece and share it with the community!
  • Differently laid out and themed prisons for you to attempt escaping from – including the P.O.W camp!
  • New items for you to track down and new craft-able items to work out!
  • More routes for you to figure out as you plot your escape!
  • More job roles to be provided for you to take up!
  • More customisation elements for your player avatar!

The escapists, a game I love more than a band of bassists.

The escapists of course is about prison life, where you are the source of a lone lunatic with a knife. Attempting to escape from a desolate jail, in desperate need of a quick bail. The gameplay is simple; you need to breakout no matter how many guards/prisoners you’re required to takeout.

I admire the options, no matter how dire like hanging from a wire. You can dig out, but if the prison is big it won't end well with me and my mate dizon arisen from the dirt, only to appear in the middle of the yard in fear and sniper fire.

You can cause a riot when things've gotten quiet, but certainly hard when I kept losing my teeth in the yard.

Or more fun escape via roof, while under pursuit before getting stomped by the guard’s practical hoof.

All in all I can't comment much more beyond that, the involvement of this game is like a torrent of vomit, a spice rack of chunks of what was a good snack, but with an oversized wallet locked away in the closet it becomes quite worth it.

Otherwise can recommend.

Few games have captivated me like The Escapists. Even after nine hours of this little indie game, I can't put it down. You'll say to yourself: "Man, that day went quick! Lets do another!" all the time. Buy this game, and you won't be dissapointed. I look forward to new updates from Mouldy Toof!

From the time I started to play The Escapists, I was hyped. It's actually got the look the Pokemon Games had before X and Y. I think this is a game that deserves it's attention. The gameplay is simple, and even if you get in fights always, or do no crafting (which is still fairly simple) you'd still need to use the money to get out (as it's the purpose of the game) if you want a beta game that still has a lot touched on, I highly recommend this gem.

I can say that this game is absolutely amazing.
The visuals remind me of a 8 or 16 bit game and it is done well. The concept of attempting to escape is amazing and the gameplay is equilly so.

8/10
Would be better if it included a level editor and a few more prisons, currently the game is limited to 3 maps.

The Escapists Review

Escapists is a awesome indie pixel graphics simulation game where your a prisoner and must escape. You need to be smart and watch the guards. If your caught with illegal items you will be put in solitary for a few dyas and will have to start from scratch again. You will need to collcect items and craft them into useful items to escape. You can steal from your fellow prisoners or buy from them to acquire recipes or items. The game goes through cycles so if your not in the right palce at the right time make sure you don't get seen or your guard heat will go up. Once you have a plan to escape and your ready wait until night and execute it. Make sure you escape before its time to wake up or you will get caught. Play this amazing game.
