Our latest free content update includes a new challenge in the form of The London Tower Prison, inspired by one of the most famous British historical sites. How will you escape?

About This Game

The Escapists provides the opportunity of experiencing a light-hearted insight into everyday prison life and, as is the case with all inmates, the main objective is escape! While under the careful watch of the guards, players will need to go about their daily duties clandestinely secreting useful objects from under their captors’ noses. Potential escapees will learn how to craft seemingly innocuous items into useful tools and even weapons as well as using them to execute cunning diversionary tactics.

Players will need to learn when to keep in line, utilising their time sensibly as they develop their own personal plans of escape. Learning the prison’s daily routines and spotting opportunities are all part of life behind bars. Working out potential routes and even misdirecting guards soon become second nature.

Whilst remembering to attend roll-call, holding down their job and keeping their fellow inmates on side, players are can also benefit from advancing their character's statistics through various means including boosting their intellect and exercising regularly. Balance mundane routine with careful planning to attain your ultimate goal - escape and freedom!

Features

  • 8 Fully operational prisons complete with routines to give you a flavour of how it *really* is inside!
  • 10 Separate job opportunities for you to sink your teeth into… If you have the knowledge to earn and hold down these employment paths of course!
  • 185+ Unique Items for you to seek out and perhaps even craft useful items with. (Team17 fully endorse the use of various weapons such as ‘shivs’, ‘nunchucks’ and ‘maces’ – within a fictional setting of course!).
  • Various Favour types for you to tackle offered up by inmates – You wouldn't want to go upsetting them now, would you?
  • Highly opinionated and incredibly funny inmates and guards to keep you on your toes as well as providing entertainment!
  • Multiple escape routes for you to work out and achieve the title of ‘The Escapist’!
  • Multiple save slots so you can have more than one escape attempt on the go!
  • Steam Achievements to strive for.
  • Steam Leaderboards – Once you have escaped see how you fared against other successfully escaped players!
  • Prison Editor – Create from scratch your very own confinement masterpiece and share it with the community!

I have been eyeing this game for quite a while, in fact almost since it was initially released. I was really excited once I actually bought it. Then I played it.

The game has an amazing idea, fun graphics, and a lot going for it. As you can tell by most of the reviews people like it. There are a lot of things that ruined the game for me.

First off, there isn't a real tutorial. It doesn't teach you anything of real importants, in fact the tooltips throughout the game do more than the tutorial. It took me over ten minutes to figure out how to lift weights in the exercise room, and I only figured it out because I went online looking for help on a wiki.

Second, many of the mechanics of the game are not very rewarding, nor very interesting. To raise your strength, you have to smash down on your a key for several hours before you can start to take on even another inmate, which leaves your finger aching and you a little frustrated. Then running to build up your movement speed is a similar situation, just a little less button mashy after you build it up during your workout. It's fun to start tunneling or exploring the vent systems, except the guards have x-ray vision and as soon as they find anything out of the ordinary it's your fault. In fact I remember one time I was just sleeping and I got caught when I had a fake vent up (Which is supposed to be fool proof by the way.) So the game mechanics weren't super well thought out, and could get a good fix. It would be awesome if the guards didn't have good vision and if you have mutliple ways you're trying to escape from, they only get rid of the one they found, or you could get other prisoner's caught for something you did, such as build a tunnel in their room while they're not in it. In other words, I would love if the game actually was more realistic, and less, you get fat overnight if you forgot to work out one day because stealing stuff and all, as well as less button mashing (bad for my fingers and potentially for my keyboard too.) and guards that weren't all seeing gods in mortal bodies.

The game had a lot of potential and could have been something ground breaking, except they shortcutted through a lot of the functions, making the game more frustrating and ridiculous than immersive. If there was a reboot or update to this game to fix several of these mechanics, I would most definitely get it.

This game is SUPER FUN! When you know how to play it, it's really fun.

Personally, I got the PC for the editor. I mainly play this game on my Xbox One.

There is 6 basic prisons. Each with twists, a snow one, a one where the guards are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and the one where it's 2.4% impossible. But, there is about 5-6 DLC Maps for money with special mechanics, and a Level Editor and Workshop for infinite levels!

For 6$ (for the sale) or $18, it's a really good game. IF you want a Editor, get the Computer verison. If you have a Xbox One, and don't care about creating levels and you want the 6 levels and DLC, get the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One Edition (Xbox and PlayStation is alot easier.)

Very fun game but one issue ruins it- the guards. The AI for them is soo messed up. If you get a job and go to work, you gain a lot of heat and they attack you for no reason. This happened to me multiple times. It is literally impossible to escape from prison without money, and jobs are the main moneymakers. Great game ruined by one gamebreaker (this happens on Center Perks, don't know about other maps).

Didn't meet my expectations. I like the old 8-bit "NES-style" graphics and I like the idea of the game as you have to outwit the prison guards to escape successfully. But the cumbersome controls and the overkill AI (extremely psychic lol) kind of made me lost interest rather quickly. So not a game I am going to recommend unfortunately. Its best to get it in the sales :).

Nice try, but not for me.

The idea is solid. maintain your prison life while secretly plotting your escape. The problem falls on the mechanics. Stats and relationships fall extremely fast. The tutorial tells you almost nothing of value. Crafting unlocks are hard to come by making the game frustrating without a wiki or tutoial.

The worst offender, though, is the guard AI. They apparently hire all guards from the psychic network. Guard finds random thing in random place: blam you're caught. Guard is walking by a dark room at night and instantly notices the vent is open: blam caught. Guard goes to check your room that has a hole covered and all contraband smuggled out: he decides to look behind the poster, blam again. You've been crawling through the vents you wait until things are clear climb down: blam guard come speeding down the hallway befor you can react. And, of course if you are caught, they know instantly where everything you've set up is and undo it.

I want to like this game, but it feels more like a chore than fun. There is some charm and some entertaining things that can happen, but there is little pay-off to what you put in.

A simple game with different enviornments you need to escape from. The nice thing is that you have a plethora of things to do and use in order to escape. Thge Workshop will give you endless content to play (or make?). Definitely buy this.

- Do you enjoy breaking walls using plastic forks?
- Do you want to beat someone using a soap inside a sock as a weapon?
- Do you want to rob a book from Robert in order to deliver ir to... Robert?
- Do you want to be smart enough to escape thousands of prisons (workshop) but dumb enough to get caught again?
- Have you had enough building prisons in Prison Architect and decided to be a inmate in them?

Well, fear no more, The Escapists delivers all your needs into one simple game: Your goal is to be creative enough to escape prisons the fastest way possible, you can dig tunnels, you can do a revolution or just simply walk out using the keys, you decide! Some perks of this game are the workshop support, dlcs at a decent price, and tons of ways to beat the same maps, great devs and a good community all in all. Recommend buying it, you will have tons of fun (and stress for not getting the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ red key

Its like day 15, you have literally everything u need to escape the last prison. You're super exited and nervous and go through the escape plan again just to make sure. While practicing your escape play, u pick up everything u need to escape with and go through everything. Its almost night time, u have ur bed dummy in place and ur guard outfit and shovels in hand while waiting in roll call and praying u dot get searched. Then, all of the sudden, u accidently press left mouse button and start digging in the middle of the ♥♥♥♥ing prsion during roll call and lose everything.

420/69 would misclick again

The Escapists happens to be a very well-built game, but like all games, has it's fair share of flaws.

Pros
  • Very fun
  • Gives you an achievement for flooding 30 toilets
  • Comes with a prison designer (also known as the "Map Editor") so you can make your own levels and send them to the world

Cons
  • Can become tedious after a while
  • Your stats deteriorate a bit too quickly
  • The officers sometimes become suspicious when you're doing nothing wrong whatsoever

Overall, The Escapists is worth playing, and the addition of a mode where you play as an officer would be a very welcome one. After all, it would be fun to learn just what the officers do offscreen.
