Reviews

“When a game of Orbital Gear gets going, it really gets going and there are few things that can truly rival the mix of giddy enjoyment and edge-of-your seat thrills that the game provides.”
Strategy Informer

“... if you are looking for a game that really gets your blood pumping with unique style and gameplay, Orbital Gear is for you.”
Elder-Geek

“There’s a solid foundation to Orbital Gear. The momentum-based aerial acrobatics are fluid, and mastering them is rewarding. The weapons are varied, and it’s interesting how they interact with the game world”

Awesome Game, lots of fun. Suffers from EXTREME lack of playerbase.

This game is good. I don't deny that. Its fast and enjoyable but it just doesn't have enough people playing which is sad. Alot of games on steam have this issue, which I find to be annyoing. I am giving this a good review, but note this, if you buy the game, you might not play against anyone.

Just plain and simple, this isn't a particularly fun game as far as I'm concerned. The concept is great; mechs in some sort of 2D space-theme shoot-em-up with massive stellar bodies and varying gravity, but throwing in non-optional and timed "orbital trials" just to unlock weaponry is annoying...

The Best:
- High quality backgrounds, backdrops, and environments (sort of a must-have for any 2D platformer style games these days). If the trials weren't timed, I'd probably appreciate these graphics even more...
- Sky is the limit (or space) as far as "how good you can get" is concerned; get comfortable with how the gravity works, how to move around, and be able to switch weapons when needed, but reaction-timing and coordination are serious game changers.

The Good:
- not terrible digital/techno style soundtracks
- challenging fast-paced gameplay
- rather challenging movement (in order to complete trials in a timely manner or be reasonably competitive in multiplayer, you'll have to be able to sling-shot around stellar bodies to get to some locations)

The Bad:
- TIMED TRIALS: you HAVE to follow the progression to be able to unlock each subsequent weapon, regardless of preferences in playstyle
- Hit boxes: time and again, thought you just hit that enemy? Well, it sure as hell hit you.
- Lots of different "Gravitational Bodies," but none of them labeled or any inkling of the effect they will have on your or your weapons.

The Ugly:
- At least on PC/Mac, the keyboard controls are very difficult to get comfortable with; you can hold down the left or right arrow key and start running around a planetary body, but go to jump off or use a thruster and the arrow key held down still dictates your direction (even if you've run around to the opposite side)
- No apparent variation in the stats of the mechs to fit different playstyles (slow and tanky, bruiser, fast but weak, etc.)
- Timed trials are exactly the same each time; no variation in enemy behavior asside from scripts relating to player position means all you really have to do is get familiar with the layout and weapon characteristics and play a level over and over until earning 3 stars.

Overall:
As far as controls are concerned, I'd like to atleast have the option to keep the player "upright" constantly, and rotate the screen as you move; otherwise my personal opinion is that you HAVE to have a controller with an 8-direction pad for the movement to ever really feel natural, and a monitor refresh of at least 120hz. Otherwise, as many would agree, if you're looking for a fast-paced, intense, and dynamic 2D game, Orbital Gear is probably for you. If you get irritated easily when gameplay isn't particularly intuitive and you don't care for timed-trials (like myself) then Orbital Gear isn't. If you can get past the timed trials, the multiplayer can be a lot of fun, as long as there are enough people online...

This game is fast-paced and lightly competitve, an extremely laid back game with fun ideas and great gameplay, however, I wouldn't reccomend getting it for it's current price :P wait for a sale

It's really fun and worth the price but I would suggest you get it on sale. The empty servers aren't a problem if you have 1 or 2 friends to play with, sometimes a lot of strangers join aswell.

This game is incredibly fun if there is a full server of people. Sadly, it is rare that I ever find a full match because there aren't that meany people online, It is a fun game overall, but I would only recommend getting it on sale because you wouldn't invest that much time due to the lack of players online.

It is a very fun and fast-paced game. A lot of fun while playing it with your friends! But since it is so hectic it is hard to play it for more than 1 hour. It is only €0.69 atm. Definitely worth it!

Really cool game, had lots of fun playing it. The only bad thing is the low playerbase.. It's boring when there are only 2-3 people in the room, but sometimes you can get lucky and find room with more people to play with.

Sorry I did not change the review when the updates came!
Now it has pretty much everything I complained about in the old review. It is an awesome couch game. I won't say much.

1. The controls feel great. Very fluid
2. Local Coop is really Fun

Really great game! I hope everyone starts playing it

Old Review

A couple of things:

The Bad:
1. No LAN Support, Local Coop (Offline LAN would be great... but nothing of that)
2. Being from South America, it sucks a lot. NO Servers avaliables, and the ones from Europe or US give me 400-500 Ping
3. Even for the Regions availables, I don't see that many servers.
4. No practice or at least at first glance, not well made tutorials or AI (Not that big of a deal, because it seems pretty straight fordward.. but still)

The Good:
1. Awesome concept
2. Very Fluid and fast pace
3. I did not play that much, but found no glitches or bugs
4. Mechs!
5. Customization

Again, correct me if I am wrong in any of the cases, but is my opinion at first glance (I might have not find the places to do it, so I may be talking falsely). I will definetly change my review if these things change.

Chears.

EDIT:
It still needs some things I would like in a game to be awesome.
This would be an awesome Couch game. LAN should be definetly on it.
More servers!

Hope more people start playing it

Orbital Gear. I've never played another 2D game to have as much fun as I have with Orbital Gear. The movement system can be a little strange at times, but after a while, it became a key part to this game in terms of my enjoyment. Tie it in with the weapons and a full server, and the game becomes something I want to sink more than a few hours into after I buy it.
Unfortunately, the issue you'll hear most is that there are not enough players, which is sad because this is a great game.
