Known issues
aka: bugs you may notice we weren't able to fix in time for this update (obviously not a complete list, but some of the more obvious ones)
  • Landmarks of Landmark have not yet been placed, but you'll notice that there is space reserved for them beside each spire. They'll appear as time permits!
  • Particles that appear when mining or harvesting are blue, instead of the correct color
  • Using Ctrl-# to switch between hotbars is not yet working
  • The sky can change to a blueish color when you're under a layer of voxels
  • Lighting can change abruptly when you transition between biomes
  • Traveling to the spire using the Stone of Recall may send you to a 'minor' surface hub instead of the main surface spire
  • Props that are free (such as glass panes) appear greyed out in the prop palette
  • Occasionally you may need to click twice on a tree to start autoharvesting, rather than just once.
  • Occasionally you may see trees, plants, or rocks floating over a cavern entrance.

Update Notes - 5 May 2015 - The Big Wipe Update

Welcome to the fresh new worlds of Landmark post-wipe!

You'll notice a lot of changes to pretty much everything, and we have a new series of achievements to help guide you through the basics, so you can feel free to hop in and explore for yourself. However, if you've been playing for a while and you're used to the way things worked before, you might want to take some time to read about what's changed and check out the details below.

Crafting and harvesting changes

TL;DR summary:
  • Basic tier 1 resources are now free, you don't need to mine them at all to build with them. This includes dirt, stone, sand, ice, snow.
  • Composite items such as metal alloys and plastics are now crafted from component items (refined resources like smelted copper)
  • Crafting stations have been consolidated
  • Tree and plant harvesting have been simplified; all trees can now be chopped by all axes
  • Upgrading and salvaging have been removed
  • Item mods (e.g. “fast”, “biting”) have been improved
  • Heartwood, plant fiber, plant extract, and cut stone no longer exist
  • Founder’s Pickaxe can now be upgraded
  • Non unique plants are no longer harvestable; plants that can be harvested have a special effect sparkle to make them easy to identify:



Achievements/Progression

TL;DR summary:
  • You will gain your building tools as well as other useful items including starter home templates, cave sounder, and starting pulverizer via achievements
  • Recipes can now be tracked through the journal, replacing the recipe tracker
  • Recipes can be flagged for tracking in the journal or via the ‘watch’ button on the crafting stations.
  • Combat progression achievements have purple outlined cards in the journal, and reward character stats
  • Non progression achievements are for fun and give vanity rewards


Continent Changes

TL;DR summary:
  • New biomes: deciduous surface, deciduous cavern, volcanic surface, volcanic cavern. Also new flora for underwater biome.
  • Continent shapes are more varied
  • Continents are all new, and have brand new names (see below)
  • Surface caves are back, and can be claimed (surface caves only)
  • Underground cave networks are longer than previously
  • Combat NPCs no longer on the surface (except fungi)
  • Lower layer enemies are tougher
  • Caves are darker
  • More ruins have been added
  • Bedrock will now prevent you from digging too far towards the outside of the continent in directions in which there are no more caves


Claim Limit Changes

TL;DR summary:
  • Existing players (who played prior to the wipe update) will be granted expansion slots so they start with 2 base and 8 attachment claims exactly as they have now. (The expansion slots are inventory items you consume.)
  • New players who join Landmark after the wipe will start with 1 base and 3 attachment claims
    It will be possible to expand up to 8 base and 24 attachment claims


Marketplace bundle exchanges

TL;DR summary:
  • If you bought Builder's Bundles from the marketplace of common resources which will be free to place post-wipe, you'll be able to exchange them for your choice of tier 1 or 2 resources
  • This also applies to copper bundles, which is still not free to build with but has changed functionality
  • You will find a Resource Reclamation Chest in your inventory and an appropriate number of Orbs of Reclaimed Energy. Place the chest and use it as a crafting station with the orbs.


But wait, there's more!
  • Large humans are now available to play! Simply choose large human in the drop-down on character create.
  • Look for some new emissive props on the workbench crafting station in the light orbs category. These glow at night but do not actually shine light.
  • The cooldown has been removed from teleporting to friends through the contact list, and from teleporting to claims through the gallery.
  • The Stone of Recall no longer has a cooldown.
  • You can no longer place material blocks outside claims.
  • Leyline crystals can now be found on the surface as well as in caves. Once discovered, they can be teleported to using the Local Travel option at a portal spire.
  • All humans, large or small, now have underwear underneath their regular outfits.


Bug fixes
  • Friends requests should no longer time out if not answered
  • Flora have returned and look better
  • Further fixes for the flashing lines across the sky visual issue
  • Jellyfish emitter scaling has been adjusted
  • Using Ctrl-X while in fly mode should no longer also move your character downwards
  • Halas Wall Lantern can now be disassembled
  • Emitter icons have been corrected
  • Fixed memory issues that could occur if the client was open for more than an hour or two
  • Key binding for chat reply can now be changed in settings
  • Underground caves cannot be claimed (surface caves can)
  • Flames on Chandelier (intricate) should now move with the prop when prop is rotated
  • Further improvements to sensitivity of the select tool
  • The prop menu can now be closed by clicking the red X
  • The contacts menu right click options now disappears when you click off the window
  • Prop palette should no longer roll back up to the top after each prop placement
  • Zoning or opening the map no longer unhides the watch list
  • Continued performance improvements, especially around water

Before I begin my Review, here is a TL:DR:

Do not buy this game, yet. Or if you are still considering it, do research on it's current state and think carefully on your decision.


I would recommend doing research on hardware and what you may need. Some people seem to run the game just fine, others (myself included) have issues with framerate.

Also at the time of this review, the game has been out for more than a year and still does not run smoothly. some progress has been made, at least on the optimization front, just not very much.

The game has potential, but unfortunately a fair amount of it has been unrealized. I hope it gets fixed and improved.

If this game remains disappointing, or if it improves, remains to be seen.

In it's current state, I cannot recommend it. I think it is unlikely that a customer will get their money's worth as it is now, wait for it to release normally or for it to be near the tail's end of beta.

Had the game over the past year and as you can see by the amount of time I invested into the game that it is NO WAY WORTH BUYING! Bugs, lag, server shutdowns and a money sink leave this game open for ridicule. In order for your character to have new or better gear you can mine for it and create it BUT, you can spend real money on station points and then buy better gear. I knew going in what this was and so I do not regret purchasing and do realize that the game is alpha/beta/omega whatever. I just think that by now it should be fixed. I went back this past week (5/27/15) and the game seems to stayed exactly the same as when I purchased it day one on Steam. Overall, this is a game (using that word lightly) that clearly was meant to fund EQ Next.
TL;DR
Stay Away. Save your money. Bad "game".

Bought this game thinking my fiancee and I could have some fun building a fantasy house on a hill and have some fun gathering some mats etc.

Well, 4 hours into the game and we still HAVENT BUILT ANYTHING RESEMBLING EVEN A BASIC HOME.

Everything... EVERYTHING in the game requires "Ether shards", which mainly drop from mobs. So this is not a builder game, this is a "grind ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobs" game. The combat/mobs are so simplistic and boring. Not to mention many of them 2-3 shot you with your starter gear and it takes 10-20 hits to kill one mob with yout starter sword. So, get better sword/armor right? Well that REQUIRES TONS OF ETHER SHARDS. The ones you're trying to get by killing mobs with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ gear! I thought you were trying to BUILD COOL STUFF IN THIS GAME. But, if you want to have cool building material, it's not just farming copper/chopping down trees... you need ETHER SHARDS. WHAT THE HELL IS AN ETHER SHARD????? So, do I spend my ether shards getting more gear so that I can eventually more easily get more ether shards so that I can buy the proper tools to build a house?

Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic concept, I walked around the islands and saw some really cool work from other players that clearly took MANY MANY MANY HOURS. The type that a casual gamer would never be able to put in. But, to gate the barrier of entry to building something cohesive/interesting all based around "Ether shards" and killing terribly designed mobs is just awful. This game is going to go nowhere. The activity on the game was extremely low, and many people were saying in the general chat the same exact things I am saying in this review and quitting right there. Long-time players that were known with many people saying "We'll miss you ____, I hope you decide to come back some day". Followed by another person doing the same thing.. people were leaving left and right because of this ridiculous grind placed into a BUILDER game.

I'll consider returning to this game if they fix all of this garbage, but in its current state, it is essentially unplayable unless you are jobless or spend all of your free time on the game.

Not recommending for one reason - the same one others have pointed out - the ludicrous claim system where you lose your claim if you're not playing enough. I like to jump from game to game and having a game that is even more of a time sink than normal, then being penalized if you don't dump enough time into it, is just dumb beyond belief.

No game punishes you as much for not playing for a while, all the cool pictures in the store display take months to build but if you don't play for two weeks to pay up keep they are instantly just gone ands its simply ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If this game had a single-player hostable mode it would be at least decent to play on your own without losing all the stuff you worked on.

Overall (Early Access): 4/10

Participating in Landmark beta is or was an incredible frustrating experience for me. I absolutely loved the concept of this game when I first discovered it. A great looking building MMO with a powerful toolset to bring your imagination to life. And at the beginning, when alpha turned into beta, it was kind of that, but with every new feature or mechanic SOE introduced it became less and less fun and now the picture of where the game is heading becomes clear enough to jump ship.

If building stuff is what you want to do and what you came for, better give it a pass, in reality you spend 80% of your time grinding and 20% building. I know in MMO’s there is always a certain ratio between stuff you want to do and stuff you have to do in order to be able to do the fun stuff, but in Landmark this is way off. And it is getting worse with every new feature introduced. At the beginning of beta most resources could be found at the surface and running around in the world would quickly get you what was needed to build. Now we multiple tiers of cave systems, crawling with monsters and the better resources are deep below, so ultimately this is more a mining simulator or Boulder-Dash remake. The game is also transforming into a standard MMO, where you kill mobs and PvP and craft weapons, not even a good one at that with simplistic combat (inspired by Guild Wars 2) and lack of classes. If you are like me and spend your Minecraft time only in creative mode, you will hate this. This is survival mode only, there is no creative mode, you need to grind materials to build, materials to upgrade your tools and upkeep to rent your plot in the world (if you fail to pay rent in 2 weeks, your construction is gone from the world, a template is saved though and the resources are refunded). That was kind of okay, when you where immortal, but now there are mobs, fall damage and it resources went rarer and relocated to ugly monotone underground caves.

The building tools themselves are okay, but since the world is voxel-based it is sometimes incredible difficult to get a clean basic shape out of the provided tools, like a hollow cylinder. There are ways of making your creations look professional, but it takes time to learn and the learning cure is quite steep. Good thing is, the community so far is great and helpful and there are tons of tutorials out there. But as mentioned, without a creative mode to really experiment around it ramps of the start-up time. Landmark has a way to go on optimizing the voxel engine and the way the tools-geometry works to remove the necessity of “Voxelmancy” which is advanced voxel manipulation in order to create shapes the basic tools can’t support.

If Landmark ever introduces a true creative mode to just build, by yourself or with friends without worries and share your creations with the community I will be back. But for now this is a way to grindy wanna-be MMO that lost track of what it originally wanted (or at least promoted) to achieve to be, primarily a building game. It is simply the developers want this to be a much different game that I originally hoped for, so overall I am disappointed now. So we are heading towards a so-so MMO with building as a possible end-game that still is far away from release. The developers could have put that effort into finalizing the building aspect and turn a good into a great building game that looked much closer to completion, because what is there is pretty solid. The feature add process is basically starting with the endgame and putting all basic gaming systems in place afterwards. Oh and by the way a cash-shop for a beta-release is a no-go!

Like alot of the other reviews are stating....The game has sat stagnent for more then a year now. The voice of the man you hear in the video they have first shown doesnt even work for the company anymore cause they let him go... GL to your journeys Dave G.... SOE sank when they sold out to a Investment firm....I really wanted to support this game I had the trailblazer $100.00 pack and bought some resources and other goods off the microtrans store in support of development. Yet After playing hours into the game I gave up... and I got quite abit of hours IMO...I mean I lived on this game night and day... They removed lots of the fun items that were bracelets and rings and itemized it all into boots so you cant stack fun abilities anymore like gliding and sprinting... now only one or the other. They did this to cator to pvp players in the "Arena" game modes they created instead of just limiting what trinkets to allow in those arena games... Poorly executed IMO... After the company structure changes I really dont know where this game will go cause it hasnt adapted much. I hop back in now then and reinstall for peeks at what has happen but nothing keeps me long term...

On a side note the Building is truely AWESOME and very indepth if you have a creative mind to you and you can create tons of lovely things... but if they dont get some vision back to this game and it just becomes a lost husk to Produce Everquest next I cant in good judgement recommend this game for the prices they want.

Being the beautiful behemoth Steam is, it offers us lots of different games to play at low prices. So as expected most pc gamers won't just stick to one game all of the time. Landmark doesn't recognize this, and as many people have said the claim system is ludicrously expensive. Personally back when I was inventing game concepts I had a very similar idea except it was no way near as punishing. Now, and I'm not a professional, if I can come up with better rulings around this than these developers why am I playing?

I spent most of my time at the start of the game mining basic materials to get forges and the like and also have a decent sized claim, and then I decided to play something else for a couple of weeks and come back. Progress reset. I knew it would happen, so again I cleared my lot put my basics back and mined for the upkeep. Then it seemed like I was trapped in an endless cycle of buying land.

Your first claim should be free, full stop. Every player should safely be able to come back to their first claim safely if within a month of last playing and I can't see that being an issue. They can work this several ways afterwards like the protective radius around your claim might decrease over time or something. A concept similar to rust would be great; protection around your area ( i know rust doesnt have this) would run out then other players can destroy and build over you. Then 2nd claims onwards should be charged upkeep which I think is fair, but irregular players need to be able to exist too.

I can't with a good conscience recommend paying $20, $60, or $100 for early access to test Landmark's closed beta.

After more than a year of testing, Landmark is still nothing more than a handful of loosely connected game systems. The pace of updates has slowed to a crawl in the last six months. Countless milestones have been missed, and some key priorites have dropped off the roadmap entirely. When there have been updates, they've mostly been to add new textures or props for testers to build structures for Daybreak's other upcoming MMO, EverQuest Next.

If you're curious about the MMO development process in a struggling (but still optimistic) triple-A studio, you might enjoy testing Landmark. The developers, artists, and producers actually test alongside players, and they do value our feedback and occasionally make changes based on it.

Landmark does have a lot of potential, but I wouldn't even call it a "game" yet because it simply isn't very entertaining. I'd generally recommend most players wait until Landmark reaches open beta (free access) to check it out.

Okay, so the developers clearly stated that this was a dev game/creator that provides its users with the tools to create things such as castles, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and monuments using a really cute engine. It accomplishes that quite well, until you get to the part where you want to build anything that isn't a dirt hut. Then you get to play Grinding Simulator 2014. If you're like me, and you want to BUILD things and not play minecraft's surival, this isn't going to be a great game for you. I started playing as soon as the game switched to Beta, so I was jipped of Alpha perks and ♥♥♥♥, which hurt me big time. I expected more bang for my buck. I tried playing for a while (20 hours on record) but it was too mundane. After about 20 hours all I had was two plots of land, and a tiny house. The only reason I had the resources to build the house was because some premium guy gave me a ♥♥♥♥ load of stone. If it wasn't for that, I'd have given up at the 10 hour mark. It took me over 2 hours to build anything worth noting a house.
Plus you have to pay rent (which is understandable since they don't want AFK's to take up all of the land) and if you aren't active for two weeks, say goodbye to your house, which is what happened to me. I honestly wanted a refund and almost sold my account to get my money back. I was ♥♥♥♥♥♥.
I bought into the hype and the reviews for the Alpha, only to be disappointed during the Beta. If they had a local server that allowed you to host a 10-person island for you and a "guild" that doesn't require maintenance, I'd hope on that ♥♥♥♥ in a quick minute.
Also, the servers are dreadful half the time. The longer you play, the more your computer renders, and it renders the objects/voxels faster that they are forgotten, so about a half hour in, you're bogged down to ♥♥♥♥.

Take this with a grain of salt. I'm sure if you had a group of friends/comrades who put time into this game, you can build some amazing things. If you're a loner like me looking to build on their own, this is NOT for you. Go buy Minecraft, or Planet Explorers.

It's been months since I got this game, totally regretting spending money on this. Random freezes and locks, massive fps drops, unplayable, and there has been no improvement in that regard. My first steam review, and I'm using it to warn you guys, wait a year or so. Actually, wait till it's released, it'll be free. Don't throw money at this.

Ahhh...upgraded my PC and now that I can fully enjoy the game without horrible lag from a 5 year PC, It's been awhile but my purchase of a founders pack will get me back in and have fun finally! Okay...found my CD key and have my account, says I can't login? Oh well, I'll just my paste my key in that I paid money for and get into the- *Your code may have expired or already been redeemed....Try and BUY ANOTHER founder pack!*

....The hell?

[Edit: Yes, I did ask them, hell, called them and they couldn't do a thing for me, since they kept putting me to different people]

Unfortunately the free-to-play mechanics in Landmark are anything but complimentary or elegantly integrated. I understand that purchasing this game represented an early-release risk. But to be confronted with barriers to play along side a pay or grind mechanic is beyond disappointing: it is untenable, as is this game.

I used to love this game. When I bought it before the combat update, I thought "Finally a sandbox game without combat. I can build and craft to my hearts content."

I haven't played it in a while and decided to see how the game mechanics were. I created a new character, knowing that I would spawn on a tier 1 world. Within five minutes of exploring and harvesting materials, I was killed by a monster that dealt 700 damage with each attack! I was near the Spire at the time, which I assumed would have weaker monsters surrounding it.

Then I had a look at what I would need for a new weapon and some armour, but I found out that the only way to craft weapons and armour was with a material that only monsters drop.

I then went in search of a weaker monster, and finally found a wisp, killed it and received only one of the material. Keep in mind that you need a minimum of 1000 of them.

This is not a game I would reccommend to others with the new combat update.

two large problems ive noticed from playing the game for a couple hours.

1. The optimization needs to be fixed

2. the resouces needed to build stuff needs to be drastically reduced

The underlying issue here is youre trying to make money off with your cash shop, when you should be using this time to make your game where it should be. Its a shame sony has a bad reputation for games and this is why.

Don't buy this game.

It began as an excellent crafting/building sandbox with a superb building system. However, after recent updates it has become all but required to purchase items with real money to advance in the game.

This seems to be the case with most SOE games of late, I am looking at you H1Z1, and thus SOE has now earned a permanent spot on my list of studios I refuse to purchase from.

I stopped playing this game last year for two main reasons: The lag is completely horrible even on a fairly high-end system (I had my PC custom built to handle The Old Republic on high settings), and the Upkeep system on claims means if you don't log in and do busywork mining for an hour at least once a week, you lose your land (and potentially everything on it if you don't log in soon enough to get it back in your inventory before it "expires".)

Yes, I recommend this game. The game itself has potential and groups of friends could have some good fun with it.

Sadly the stability of this game makes it nearly unplayable. Wife told me it's been this way since the start and they really haven't put the effort in to fix these issues.
