Update Notes Summary: End of December 2014

The full update notes with screenshots and detailed information can be found on the official SOE Landmark forums, but we wanted to give you a highlight summary here in the meantime.


The Landmark cave system is being expanded and true layers are being introduced! Rather than altering the current surface caves, which would require popping off any affected claims in the area, surface caves will be removed from existing continents in the 12/15 patch. They will return in the new continents that will be generated for open beta. Beneath the surface of each island explorers will be able to explore through 5 layers filled with underground caves. Along with the cave and layer expansion, mining veins of metal and gems will be redistributed so that the higher tiers of resources are found in the deeper, more dangerous depths.


Five new types of monsters, some of which have never been seen before, will appear in the world. Each type has a unique mode of attack and strategies to learn. While there will be a few monsters found above ground, more will lurk in the underground caverns and around buried ruins, so explorers and adventurers seeking treasure in the deeper depths should be sure to take some sturdy armor and weapons.

New Equipment
In Landmark, your choice of equipment is what determines what abilities you can use during combat. This allows you to try a wide variety of combat styles, and mix and match equipment to customize your fighting abilities to suit exactly what you want! Armor, weapons, and equipment use a synergistic key word system which allows items with matching key words to enhance each other’s effectiveness. Four new types of weapons and over twenty new armor sets and accessories are coming with this update.

Key Words System
Key words on equipment are represented as icons and colored text. Combining equipment that has the same key word can provide a bonus to abilities based on that key word. In the case of abilities, the background of the tooltip will be the color of the key word(s) of that ability.

The portal spire on each island is expanding into a full leyline network, which will include additional teleport points both above and below ground for ease of transport. The transport UI is also being upgraded to include more useful information such as which type of environments are found on which island. Each subterranean layer will have a hub that explorers will be able to travel to, but additional leyline points will need to be discovered before they can be traveled to.

With the addition of NPC monsters to the world, the chances that adventurers will experience death has increased! If you die on the surface you will return to the hub. If you die below the first layer you will revive in one of the graveyards which are scattered around the underground layers. When a player dies in the wilds of Landmark they now have the option to revive themselves at the spot that they died. However, to do this the player needs to spend a Spirit Anchor. Spirit Anchors can be crafted at any workshop.

Harvesting Changes
Grab your pulverizers, because resources are moving underground! With the arrival of underground layers our various tiers of surface and subsurface resources have moved into the extensive cave networks that can now be found deep beneath the islands of Landmark. While this change makes the search for resources a far more interesting and exciting prospect, it also makes it a bit more challenging. But don’t worry! We’ve taken this into account and made a number of changes to our tiers, the resources assigned to them, and the way those resources are used to accommodate gatherers, crafters, and builders alike. The resource/harvesting changes below have also been added to the in-game help system (the ? button on your bottom menu) so you can refer to it at any time.

Redistribution of Plants
Plants have always been biome specific, but they were also designed with a progression in mind that required a layered world. With the advent of those layers our underground botanical progression dreams have finally been realized! To accommodate this new progression we’ve adjusted the tiers at which certain plants spawn and in some cases also swapped around their home biomes. As a result the following distribution changes have occurred.

Redistribution of Voxel Materials
As with plants, our stones, metals, and gems have been redistributed and pushed underground to fill out the vast array of caves now found beneath the surface. However, as we considered the implications of underground gathering in the deepest layers of our world, we also decided to move forward with a long idle plan to streamline our gathered material list with composite materials. The result of this plan is that fewer materials are found in the world, but those materials can now be combined to create composite materials. For example, rather than mining a Mithril vein you would create that rare metal by combining Iron and Gold.

The point of this change is to simplify the goals of gatherers when hunting for resources underground, making it easier to focus on a smaller selection of veins, which in turn should make it easier to accumulate those resources in sufficient quantities over a reasonable period of time. To accommodate this new resource plan we’ve adjusted the tiers at which certain material veins spawn. As a result the following distribution changes have occurred.

Composite Resources
Landmark isn’t a game about grinding levels; it’s a game where everything you gather and create has value, and we want to ensure that's as true for crafters as for builders. To accomplish this, we are introducing composite resources. These are materials used specifically for crafting, and they include low tier resources in the creation of high tier composites.

These composites are called "Cut" materials on the crafting stations (e.g. "Cut Rubicite"). This means some resources that were formerly mined directly are now created by combining other resources; for example, rubicite is no longer a mined ore, so to craft an item using rubicite, you would first create cut rubicite out of copper and gold.

Building Resources
We don't want the gathering of resources for building to be onerous. Thus, while composites are our solution for gatherers and crafters, we've created a similar system to allow builders to make many building materials out of the resources they gather from the world. Our solution here is the introduction of Blocks, which work the way wood and glass have already been functioning. By giving builders recipes to craft blocks, which are only used for building, we can allow a much more generous conversion rate than we could when you were building directly with mined ore. In other words, instead of one unit of mined rubicite equalling one placed voxel of rubicite, the block recipes allow a small number of units of mined copper and gold to convert into a large number of placed voxels of rubicite. Wherever the resource you want to build with is not directly mined in the world, look for a block recipe to build with!

Update Notes - 12/4/14

First off, as we approach our first holiday season in Landmark we'd like to say: Thank you!

  • As a token of appreciation, check your in-game mail for one of three special holiday outfits.
Starter Templates
  • All players have been granted sets of Starter templates, to get you building quickly
    • A set of Arcs, from 1 to 100 voxels in size
    • A set of Ovals, from 10 to 50 voxels in size (and one of a 100 voxel size)
    • A set of Triangles, from 1 to 100 voxels in size
    • Four sets of fonts (including one in the Landmark Style)
    • The Landmark Logo
    • A set of Angled lines
    • A set of Cylindrical Pillars
    • We've also included two Holiday templates: a Snow Globe and a set of Reindeer!
Competition Changes
  • We're making some sweeping changes to the way that Competition entries are submitted.
    • Competition entries are no longer submitted via a Template - they now use the entire claim.
    • Once you tag your claim, a Competition button should appear in the Claim Management UI (assuming there is a competition active)
    • Once a claim has been entered, it cannot be edited / deleted / foreclosed. It also no longer costs upkeep.
    • Once entered, the entry should be viewable in the Competition section of the Showcase.
    • Once the submission phase ends, other players can now vote on your entry.

Bug Fixes
  • When attempting to place a claim on an invalid area (such as a cave) the message is much more specific now.
  • Barbed Armor will no longer react to fall damage.
  • You should no longer see incorrect / garbage text when viewing claims from the map.
  • Waypoints should no longer appear under the map when changing islands.
  • Chopping down trees should no longer take more than one click.
  • The Selection Tool should no longer unequip when using CTRL to enter Tweak Mode.
  • You can now properly grapple while gliding.

It's been months since I got this game, totally regretting spending money on this. Random freezes and locks, massive fps drops, unplayable, and there has been no improvement in that regard. My first steam review, and I'm using it to warn you guys, wait a year or so. Actually, wait till it's released, it'll be free. Don't throw money at this.

I used to love this game. When I bought it before the combat update, I thought "Finally a sandbox game without combat. I can build and craft to my hearts content."

I haven't played it in a while and decided to see how the game mechanics were. I created a new character, knowing that I would spawn on a tier 1 world. Within five minutes of exploring and harvesting materials, I was killed by a monster that dealt 700 damage with each attack! I was near the Spire at the time, which I assumed would have weaker monsters surrounding it.

Then I had a look at what I would need for a new weapon and some armour, but I found out that the only way to craft weapons and armour was with a material that only monsters drop.

I then went in search of a weaker monster, and finally found a wisp, killed it and received only one of the material. Keep in mind that you need a minimum of 1000 of them.

This is not a game I would reccommend to others with the new combat update.

I can't with a good conscience recommend paying $20, $60, or $100 for early access to test Landmark's closed beta.

After more than a year of testing, Landmark is still nothing more than a handful of loosely connected game systems. The pace of updates has slowed to a crawl in the last six months. Countless milestones have been missed, and some key priorites have dropped off the roadmap entirely. When there have been updates, they've mostly been to add new textures or props for testers to build structures for Daybreak's other upcoming MMO, EverQuest Next.

If you're curious about the MMO development process in a struggling (but still optimistic) triple-A studio, you might enjoy testing Landmark. The developers, artists, and producers actually test alongside players, and they do value our feedback and occasionally make changes based on it.

Landmark does have a lot of potential, but I wouldn't even call it a "game" yet because it simply isn't very entertaining. I'd generally recommend most players wait until Landmark reaches open beta (free access) to check it out.

Yes, I recommend this game. The game itself has potential and groups of friends could have some good fun with it.

No, not when a multi-billion company is charging £75.00 for a few in-game items and a title.

Let me start by saying this game is a solid ten. the combat is smooth and fluid, the crative tools are tops, i was able to make an epic mountain top base that looped and winded through the inside of the mountain and down the side with balconys and so on running along the walls. my friends and i spent about twenty hours building it and getting all the work stations. now for the bad part. WE LOST EVERYTHING. i didnt play the game because i didnt even have a second to my self for about a week and the payment wasnt made for the claim so what better way to punish the players who spend a massive ammount of time and miss one payment by not only deleting their entire claaim but having no real way to get it back. the claim is saved as a template and all of the resorces are added to an overflow inventory which has a TIME LIMITE before they send you anoth massive middle finger and delete the rest of your work. yeah thanks guys. this massive issue needs to be fixed asap, im probably not going to play this game for a very long time simply because all of my work was for nothing and it takes so much time and dedication to get where we were. i pride myself on detail and as seen in my screenshots i spent an exsessive ammount of time getting little details into our claim, i wasnt even close to finished but im sure i wont be starting again. to wrap up my rant this is an amazing beautiful game with an awsom esoundtrack and some of the best non farcry map editing tools ive ever used. worth the money but dont invest too much time into it yet, wait until the full release.

I stopped playing this game last year for two main reasons: The lag is completely horrible even on a fairly high-end system (I had my PC custom built to handle The Old Republic on high settings), and the Upkeep system on claims means if you don't log in and do busywork mining for an hour at least once a week, you lose your land (and potentially everything on it if you don't log in soon enough to get it back in your inventory before it "expires".)

Alright. First of all, I enjoyed playing the game. I tried to dig to the center of the earth (no lava? come on, guys), I ran all over the place until I found the ocean, and I claimed and built myself a little temple with a floating orb of agate and an underground tomb.

It was fun. Unfortunately, I feel like this is the only thing I'm going to be able to do. Building is lovely, sure, but I agree with some other reviewers that the combat needs to be... either eradicated entirely as a mechanic or heavily downgraded. I don't think anyone bought Landmark imagining fighting giant munching plants or floating balls of light. Having them as pets, maybe, sure, but fighting certainly wasn't on my mind when I originally bought it.

I wanted to craft! Now I have to fight to make what is basically a brick. I died to a wisp. I nearly died to an abomination - which is sort of randomly around and doesn't fit the landscape all that well to begin with.

I love, love, love the mechanics of mining. Digging random holes in stuff, seeing the ground give way, getting stuff like dirt and stone, it all works. Some day, I may even get the hang of building (don't hold your breath there).

However, I am begging you guys to make cuts in the combat stuff. Either make stuff laughably easy to kill, make it easier to fight, or don't make ether an absolute necessity of life. SOMETHING to get the game back on the track of crafting with abandon.

If you like wandering, collecting stuff, beautiful (if empty-ish) landscapes, and being able to mine underwater, I suggest you try it out, but it might be a good idea to wait until its proper release. It's still got a ways to go.

(I'll mention real quickly that there are some graphic issues that made my head hurt, not much of a tutorial, etc, but that's the sort of stuff I usually let go on betas anyway.)

TLDR part:
Don't buy it unless you intend on spending LOTS of time in it!
It will punish you for putting the game down for a while.

Longer version:
Bought this game last July when it was on sale.
It looked like a beautiful game.
Beautiful graphics, lots of pretty things to look at, stuff to mine/gather, etc...
But then there was the claims system.
I thought, "Ok, I need my own plot of land to build, no prob..."
Then, there's the upkeep...
And I went back to Minecraft, where I am NOT punished for putting down the game for a while.
Until there's a single player version of this game, I'm not sinking any more money into it.

Ну что-же,Landmark я приобрёл еще на стадии закрытой альфы(с большим рвением опробовать амбициозный проект),ибо концепция мне лично очень понравилась,песочница+rpg+мультиплеер,что блин может быть лучше?Конечно можно было догадаться по примеру какого-нибудь AcheAge что это все развод и выйдет очередной второсортный проектик,но разработчики и не обещали золотые горы,они обещали сделать просто хорошую игру и не более...и вот я прождал весь этот год ожидая выхода игры хотя-бы в бету(ибо в любую игру находящуюся в преальфе играть ну просто нельзя),запускаю...а вот нет ничего из обещенного.Начнём мы с самого плохого,что есть в RPG играх,это гринд.
Он везде...везде мать вашу,и я не утрирую!Вы пришли ради того что бы построить свой замок по собственному-же чертежу,или выполнить кучу разнообразных квестов,ну или же просто ради исследования мира?"Идите на♥♥♥♥♥♥,это игра про гринд,а не про строительство и своё приключение,и не важно мы там говорили в рекламе!",скажут вам разработчики и отправят на рабочий стол.Мобов катострафически мало,на всех их не хватает(да и видов мобов тоже мало,да),крафтинг не интуитивен(часто просто не понятно что и из чего берётся),а толкого обучения для новичков нет(конечно есть оффициальная вики-страница,но факта это не меняет),да и спросить некого,чат обычно мертв,так что помочь вам никто не сможет!К тому-же ценник как по мне не оправдан,платить 1000 рублей за откровенно пустую и сырую игру(ну на данный момент),это какое-то издивайтельство,я лучше уж добалю еще 1000 и куплю Guild Wars 2,чем...это нечто.

А теперь о наболевшем...об оптимизации,разработчики прикрутили табличку с фпс в левый угол экрана(спецом для тестеров игры),так что я могу назвать точное колличество кадров в секунду,и это 20 на средних настройках,и 30 на минимуме.Кто-то скажет что у меня комп ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ и мол только твоя вина,но простите,это ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ тянет Battlefield 4 на ульте,так что заглохните,и не надо мне говорить что это ранний доступ,это уже блин бета!Не пре-альфа,не альфа,а бета!До релиза осталось совсем немного,и я не уверен что они поравят все что есть в игре на данный момент,и я уж молчу про мелкие и не очень баги,что встречаются довольно часто!

Как-бы вам сказать,конечно английский уже стал интернациональным языком,но вот я в школе учу (при чем хорошо) немецкий,и потому играть c комфртом я не могу.Ну неужели так трудно перевести игру хоть на немецкий и французский языки,это уже стандарт,да и не идиди студия вы,что-бы разрабатывать игру на одном лишь инглише.

Не в коем случаи не брать,по крайней мере на даннный момент,игра сыра и не доработана,в ней много багов ,а об оптимизации разработчики похоже и не слышали вовсе,брать только после релиза на свой страх и риск,а лучше и вовсе на распродаже по скидке.А если уж не в терпеж то купите...minecraft,да мне стыдно это говорить но это факт,творение Нотча сейчас выглядит куда как перспективней Lanmark"а.

Замечательная игра Landmark начала меня удевлять почти сразу после появления в открытом мире.
Учитывая то, что она ещё в ранним доступе, она получилась не плохо, но есть то, что замечаешь очень сильно
1) Оптимизация ( в игре она слабовата с GTX 670 иногда FPS падает до 16-17 )
2) Текстурки и тени ( ну тут ясно, что дороботка исправит это недоразумение )
Больше плохого я ничего не могу сказать, ибо поиграл очень мало :)
1) Приятная графика
2) Физика в игре хороша ( особенно это заметно, когда добываешь ресурс )
3) Удобный крафт
4) Удобный интерфейс ( особенно круто сделана карта )
1) ещё есть PVP, но о нём расказать ничего не могу.

Игра мне понравилась и советую любителям песочниц.

Сразу стоит написать, что я не рекомендую эту игру для покупки прямо сейчас, то есть пока она находится в раннем доступе. Причины можно найти и в менее многобуквенных комментариях:
  • Игра не оптимизирована. Просадка по ФПС не дает как следует насладиться процессом, но в общем и целом терпима
  • В строительстве пока мало инструментов, хотя, надо признать, что даже с довольно скудным набором юзеры создают совершенно нереальные постройки, которые стоит глянуть хотя бы на сайте игры
  • ПВП-составляющая на зачаточном уровне и пока не играбельна
  • Реализовано 20% от заявленного разработчиками
Напоследок хочу сказать, что игра имеет очень интересный концепт и довольно хорошие стартовые данные, приятную графику и огромный потенциал для роста. Пока что, правда, существует только как конструктор для строительства.

Очень мощная среда для создания всего-что-угодно, позволяет за несколько вечеров отстроить небольшой город практически в любом ключе. Чтобы оценить масштабы возможностей просто посмотрите скриншоты того, что делают сейчас игроки. Огромный набор инструментов для строений, куча декораций и прочих восхитительных мелочей. Единственный минус - игра ужасно оптимизирована и тормозит даже на очень мощных машинах, если вас не пугает 5-15 фпс в игре и вы страстно жаждете создавать,можете свободно приобретать прямо сейчас. В противном случае - лучше дождаться релиза.

Игра хорошая. Долго ждал пока оптимизируют, на хорошем ПК крашилась меньше чем через минуту в течении почти года. Вот наконец смог побегать, жду релиза.

I love this game, but I am leaving Landmark - here is why.

Look its not that its a beautiful update of Minecraft, with powerful tools that can allow for so much creativity.

Its not that I am forced to wander the world and discover other players wonderful creations.

Its not that It looks so pretty I just have to crank my graphics even though it brings my computer to a crawl.

Its not that I dont enjoy being apart of a growing community that gets to create whatever they want, and have a lot of input in the game they want.

I have played 85.7 Hours of this game. I enjoyed pretty much every minute, but no matter how much I play the game, if my real life calls, which it often does, I am penalized for not playing the game.

NEVER in the history of my gaming life (20 years of 27 alive.) Has a game ever punished me for putting it down. If it is online, I get a bit further behind the other players, that I accept. If its offline, there is absolutely zero consequences, I just pick it back up. The only negatives to putting down a game is literally just not playing it.

Until Landmark. Thanks to Landmarks Claim system you have to pay upkeep, I get it. But here is where the punishment comes in. It can take upwards of an hour or two just to mine enough copper to last you a week or two. That is if you've played long enough to get the Claim Tariff Boost which means you can pay even further upkeep, so now two to for hours of minig.

So, while I was away letting my upkeep go, I now have to come back and spend all the free time I HAD to just BUILD something now on endlessly mining. Now I am not even doing what I PAID for from a game. And where does those 2-4 hours of my time go? Right back into my upkeep and back into SOE with me having nothing to show for that time except for my Claim getting to exist.

If no one sees the sick and twisted manipulation by SOE to get you constantly playing their game, then they are dense. It is one thing to make a game great enough that I never want to stop playing it. It is an entirely different and serious thing when a company builds in hooks that not only prevent you from doing what you want to do, but one that places consequences on casual gamers.

Basically this is like cigarette companies spraying their cigarettes with more nicotine. And in the age where Video Game Addiction has quickly become one of the leading addicitions in the WORLD, companies like SOE should be ashamed of themselves for publishing a game that literally forces you to play it OR ELSE!!!

My suggestion, Landmark needs an offline survival/sandbox mode, one that could still technically be linked up to the Gallery and Player Studio, but that allows casual players/builders/nonRPGers to get in and take hold of Landmarks awesome power without upkeep/claim deletion. If SOE does not do that, the community is going to shrink very quickly and turn quite ePeen.

Bought this game thinking my fiancee and I could have some fun building a fantasy house on a hill and have some fun gathering some mats etc.

Well, 4 hours into the game and we still HAVENT BUILT ANYTHING RESEMBLING EVEN A BASIC HOME.

Everything... EVERYTHING in the game requires "Ether shards", which mainly drop from mobs. So this is not a builder game, this is a "grind ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobs" game. The combat/mobs are so simplistic and boring. Not to mention many of them 2-3 shot you with your starter gear and it takes 10-20 hits to kill one mob with yout starter sword. So, get better sword/armor right? Well that REQUIRES TONS OF ETHER SHARDS. The ones you're trying to get by killing mobs with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ gear! I thought you were trying to BUILD COOL STUFF IN THIS GAME. But, if you want to have cool building material, it's not just farming copper/chopping down trees... you need ETHER SHARDS. WHAT THE HELL IS AN ETHER SHARD????? So, do I spend my ether shards getting more gear so that I can eventually more easily get more ether shards so that I can buy the proper tools to build a house?

Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic concept, I walked around the islands and saw some really cool work from other players that clearly took MANY MANY MANY HOURS. The type that a casual gamer would never be able to put in. But, to gate the barrier of entry to building something cohesive/interesting all based around "Ether shards" and killing terribly designed mobs is just awful. This game is going to go nowhere. The activity on the game was extremely low, and many people were saying in the general chat the same exact things I am saying in this review and quitting right there. Long-time players that were known with many people saying "We'll miss you ____, I hope you decide to come back some day". Followed by another person doing the same thing.. people were leaving left and right because of this ridiculous grind placed into a BUILDER game.

I'll consider returning to this game if they fix all of this garbage, but in its current state, it is essentially unplayable unless you are jobless or spend all of your free time on the game.

Not recommending for one reason - the same one others have pointed out - the ludicrous claim system where you lose your claim if you're not playing enough. I like to jump from game to game and having a game that is even more of a time sink than normal, then being penalized if you don't dump enough time into it, is just dumb beyond belief.

No game punishes you as much for not playing for a while, all the cool pictures in the store display take months to build but if you don't play for two weeks to pay up keep they are instantly just gone ands its simply ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If this game had a single-player hostable mode it would be at least decent to play on your own without losing all the stuff you worked on.
