Detective Case and Clown Bot in: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon is a videogame inspired by the classic point and click adventures from the 80’s and 90’s. It adopts these eras distinctive design and it is built using only the pixel art technique. The game itself runs at a native resolution of 256x192, the same resolution used by the old ZX Spectrum 48k and most recently by the Nintendo DS.

Synopsis:
A strange murder has occurred in the Hotel Lisbon, a man committed suicide with 14 stabs to the back while at the same time he peacefully drank his coffee.
This case with contradictory facts was too complex for Policeman Garcia to solve, so he decided to hire the only detective duo in town capable of solving it: the mythical Detective Case and the unmistakable Clown Bot.
Together, they will solve a network of love relations so complex and so intricate, that it would take at least 14 clairvoyants, 5 apocalyptic sect prophets who can predict the end of the world and 3 of those gypsies that can read the palm of your hand just to guess the final outcome.

Characters:
With the mythical Detective Case, also known as the world worst detective, a man so rough and rude that his witnesses would rather be run over by a slow moving freight train than to be questioned by him.
And the hilarious Clown Bot who, although he works as a Detective Case’s sidekick, he hopes in reality that one day he will get a job as a circus clown. Unfortunately, and no matter how many applications he sends, no circus will ever accept a clown that is afraid of children. He never sleeps, so besides working by day as a sidekick, he also works by night as a stand-up comedian in a local bar. People say that he is a joke machine.

Original soundtrack

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon may be low res and retro on the visual side, but we made sure that on the audio side your ears would rejoice with a complete original soundtrack. Composed of an orchestral band, a jazz band and a typical Portuguese Fado trio, the musical landscape contrasts beautifully with the colorful graphics.

Game music
Throughout the game you will ear over 20 different tracks of orchestral music composed and recorded specifically for the game.
All these tracks were recorded on studio with a 10 member band composed of friends and colleagues. All of them brought their soul and heart to these recordings and the results are absolutely AWESOME!

Jazz music
Inside the GAF Bar, a 4 man band plays some cool Jazz.
The character at the Piano is actually Filipe Melo who is doing a cameo and allowed us the rights to use some songs recorded previously with John Ellis, Romeu Tristão and João Pereira! BAM!

Fado music
To top it all, inside the Noitadas Restaurante we have a Portuguese Fado trio ready to entertain the guests. The song they sing was also recorded on studio. It is called "A Caldeirada" and it was originally written for famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues.
SUAVE!

Recommending for the portuguese, but maybe you should avoid it if you're not able to play this in Portuguese.

I had a blast, really. All the references and resemblences of my city in a pixelated art style is just amazing to see. A lot of the portuguese culture is shown in this game, and that's why I loved it so much. Even the tiniest things may be referenced, and that's what makes this a huge gem to have on anyone who loves and/or lives in Portugal. The game itself was fun too, the case was entertaining, not very confusing, but kept me going and going until I was actually done with it. I completed the game in one sitting, for about 4 hours.

The soundtrack is AMAZING, the jazzy sound had me hooked, and there's even a Fado song, one of our own genres of music!

I believe that the humour may be completely different for each language because there's a lot of puns in the version I played, so those are pretty hard to translate, if not impossible, hence why some foreigners feel like it fails at humour, but that's because you're not experiencing the best version of it, sadly the only way to play the best version is if foreigners learned Portuguese!

All in all, again I do say, a must-have gem for Portuguese speakers, sadly I don't think people "from the outside" will appreciate it as much as we do! 8/10

Detective Case and Clown Bot is a Point-and-Click adventure game made in modern times, but with the aim of bringing back the nostalgia of an era since forgotten, complete even with pixelated graphics and a 256x192 resolution.

You take control of Detective Case, a slightly misogynistic failure of a detective, and Clown Bot, a sentient robot that is aware that it is in a video game (and will occasionally make references to this fact) who wants to be a clown. The aim of the game is to solve a recent murder and any other mysteries that appear as you make your way through the game.

On paper this game sounds like it has potential, while Point-and-Click games are generally lacking in compelling gameplay or stellar graphics, they often make up for it with good storytelling, witty humour, or even sometimes heart wrenching tragedy or drama. However Detective Case and Clown Bot fails on all these fronts, the murder is incredibly straightforward to solve and the humour isn’t so much delivered as forced down your throat to the point of becoming painful. With only 5 areas in the game you find yourself backtracking to and fro, picking up objects that will later be used as evidence and interviewing potential culprits.

The interviews are really the core of this game’s “gameplay”, you ask each suspect 3 questions, linking a speech option to an item in your inventory until they crack and spill the beans. However there are no repercussions for failing an interview other than the annoyance of restarting it, something you will find yourself doing repeatedly as the speech options given to you are all phrased incredibly similarly, but only one is the correct question to ask.

In short the game has a linear, predictable plot, uninteresting characters, forced humour, tiresome gameplay, and a world too small to “explore”. Perhaps the only saving grace of this game is that achievement ♥♥♥♥♥s- cough cough –I mean achievement hunters like myself can find solace in being able to perfect the game in under 5 hours.

If you’re looking for a Point-and-Click adventure game why not rather look into Telltale Game’s modern rendition on the genre like the Walking Dead Season One and Two and Game of Thrones, or just Google “Good old Point-and-Click adventure games”, look I’ll even do it for you: http://bfy.tw/24r1 , just don’t waste $7 on this game, you’ll regret it.

The best Portuguese game I've ever played. A charming point and click adventure that makes me proud of sharing a nationality with its creators.

This actually made me laugh out loud a few times. It was really fun to play but short unfortunately. I do hope they make another one. Would be also interesting to see voiced characters. The music was very fitting to the theme as well.

A cute point and click adventure. What it lacks in pixels it makes up for in charm. It doesn't overstay its welcome (4 hours to do main and sidequests, with lots of running around) and there's a bit of an overload of bad puns (not too bad considering English is a transalation here) and "4th wall breaking" jokes because the robot (and sometime other characters) knows it's in a game.

An honest little game, not pretending to be anything it is not, nice to play through.

Hey it even has a laugh track and a popup crowd poping up from time to time that worked for me ;-)

One sour note: the linux version needs a bit of work (a symlink for the steam library) to have achievements working. Considering the amount of time since release, should have been patched up a long time ago even from a tiny dev team.
