What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Update: NeonXSZ is now complete, and will officially leave early access on Feb 16th 2016.

NeonXSZ has been in full-time development for over four years and already offers 100+ hours of stable polished gameplay. With overwhelmingly positive reviews from the players, Early Access was the obvious choice to help support the game during it's final stages of development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Update: NeonXSZ is now complete, and will leave early access on Feb 16th 2016”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Update: NeonXSZ is now complete. No signficant changes are expected between the current 0.98 version and version 1.0.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Rock solid on all three platforms, fully featured and content complete. The game is now very close to it's final release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price is scheduled to drop to $20 on Monday 18th Jan 2016.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community has already been a huge part of NeonXSZ's development. The game wouldn't be where it is today without listening to and responding to the feedback from thousands of players.

Thank you to everyone who has helped shape the game. Full release is imminent.”

Release Date Moved to Feb 22nd

For reasons we are not able to discuss at this time, we have moved the official 1.0 release date for NeonXSZ back from Feb 16th to Feb 22nd.

It's not all bad news, though. The currently released build on Steam is likely to be identical to the 1.0 release in everything but name. If you are considering grabbing the game early then there is no need to worry about playing an incomplete or buggy version.

The currently live early access build (version 0.98) is our final release candidate. This build has had no reported bugs or problems on any platform. We can't guarantee it, but we have no reason to expect this situation to change.

Sorry for the delay. We'll update this announcement as soon as we can talk about things in more detail.

Update:

So yeah, Steam went and announced the Lunar New Year sale at the last minute.

We can now confirm that our release date was tweaked to prevent a launch so close to a major Steam sale, and the Steam NDA prevented us from speaking of it sooner.

Reviews

“NeonXSZ’s gameplay is nearly flawless in execution. It can’t be overstated just how well Intravenous Software nailed gameplay, and I can’t think of a single thing I would change....This is absolutely exhilarating when fighting several enemies at once, and the fact that I often needed to take a breath after a long encounter is a testament to how exciting combat can be.”
ElderGeek

“Neon XSZ was great fun when we played it last fall, and its ongoing development has only improved the game flow, structure, and balance.”
Hardcore Gamer

“The customisation and upgrade system in NeonXSZ is particularly impressive, with dozens of ships to choose from and over 700 Upgrades available through loot drops and trading, you’ll be able to make your ship truly unique.”

About This Game

Prepare to destroy, loot, pilot, and upgrade endless gunships in a huge Tron-like cyberworld where every opponent has unique intelligence and skill. Experience remarkably agile 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) gameplay via the ease and familiarity of traditional mouse-look first-person-shooter controls that together create a gaming experience quite unlike anything you have played before.

You are the anomaly, injected into cyberspace to stake your place in a war of virus versus machine. With dozens of ships to fly and hundreds of upgrades to loot and install, will you protect the operating system or join the infection to help bring it down?

George Weidman - SuperBunnyHop said:
"Fast-paced, freeform modular combat and exploration rewards players with an incredible amount of customization. You make your own adventure-- It's Sid Meier's Pirates! in cyberspace."

What is it like to play?

At it's heart NeonXSZ is a mouse-look twitch shooter. Don't be dusting off your old joystick or Xbox controller for this one.

Experience the feel, speed and responsiveness of classic shooters like Quake or Unreal Tournament combined with spaceships trapped inside enormous internal environments. Then imagine the loot explosions, procedurally generated enemies, shops and replayability of a typical ARPG.

The core gameplay revolves around adrenaline-fueled, high-speed, spaceship dogfighting. Gunships are small, lightning fast, and have the ability to strafe in all directions with instant turning in zero gravity. Create anything from blisteringly fast fighters to slow, heavy, tank like destroyers and redesign them with nearly one thousand lootable upgrades to create your ultimate war machine.

Learn to dominate the massive sandbox open-world or progress through dozens of ever more challenging arenas in a very personal journey of experimentation and discovery.

Welcome to cyberspace.

A list of features to help you understand what NeonXSZ is and what it isn't:

  • Explore procedurally generated, totally open game worlds (7.5km x 7.5km)
  • Test your strength in dozens of non-procedurally generated Challenge Arenas with multi-stage events and high level loot rewards.
  • Get into the zone with butter smooth physics based ship controls and combat
  • Lose yourself in 60-100+ hours of constantly evolving sandbox content

  • Take on ~1000 simultaneous persistent enemies per world
  • Fight with or against four warring factions per world.
  • Tweak the game to suit your mood with customizable enemy artificial intelligence and skill levels
  • Experience unpredictable enemies with individual procedurally generated intelligence and skill

  • Loot and fly dozens of ships, and hundreds of upgrades and gadgets.
  • Hotkey everything or enter interrupt mode to control your ship's systems via the fully interactive cockpit
  • Change the look of the entire world and your ship, at any time, to suit your tastes.

  • Choose your targets based on 'Real Loot':
  • Both the player and enemies have access to the exact same pool of ships, weapons, and upgrades.
  • Kill an enemy and it will drop parts of every piece of equipment it has installed, and is using, as loot.
  • Every ship's level is defined by the technology level of the equipment it has installed not some arbitrary number. If a ship is higher level than you then it's because it's using better equipment than you and if you kill it then it will drop all of that equipment as loot. It will even drop parts of the hull and weapons it is using allowing you to collect and install those too.
  • Basically, if you can see it, you can loot it, fly it, and use it.

  • Then buy and sell your looted upgrades, weapons, and ship Hulls at hundreds of docking bays throughout the world.

  • Install ever more powerful loot to beat ever more powerful enemies to dig ever deeper into the seemingly endless rabbit hole that is NeonXSZ, and maybe, just maybe, you will be one of the very few players to ever escape.

This game is fun as hell. I tested the game back when it was in closed alpha, and I'm so glad I found it again. Got it for $15 but it's definitely worth the full $20.

Great Game!
If you like 6DOF-games, go and buy it.
If you like shooters, a lot of loot and customization, electronic music and futuristic artwork, go, buy it.

I'm about 7 hours in the game and did not encounter any bug. Controls are flawless and flying through the stations is smooth as butter in the sun.
Getting into the game was a great experience, because of the huge amounts of things to do. But after understanding the basic gamemechanisms and getting into the controls of your ship, NeonXSZ gives me a lot of superb gaming-entertainment.

There's still a lot to do in this game for me, but even at this point I can recommend it to you.

Imagine that commercial where one fellow runs into another and they inadvertently mix their peanut butter and chocolate. Now imagine that commercial except it's mixing Descent and Diablo. And the two guys are kvetching and I come along in my tech 22 ship and kill them both and loot bubbles pop out of them.

Now, the game isn't perfect (no game is)--I wish there were a campaign, but it's very solidly a sandbox style experience. That said, the actual gameplay is phenomenal. The "shipfeel" is spot on; it's genuinely a ton of fun to kill dudes and take their loot bubbles. I've dropped twenty hours into it since a friend picked it up for me as a Christmas gift, and all twenty hours have been a blast.

Descent gameplay plus diablo sensibilities equals you should buy this.

Early Access Review
I've only played just under 3 hours or so and wanted to share my first impressions because I saw that the forums were a tad bit dead apperently.

Too long didnt't read is basically: This is one of the very few if not the only Early access games I haven't eventually been disapointed with.

So, keeping in mind I'm "one of those damn young'uns" being only 19, I had not ever heard of a 6DOF game before, and had no idea what it meant when I picked this up, because like the smart buyer I am I do ALL my research first /sarcasm.

It turns out I really should have... Because I wish I'd known about this genre sooner! This game is one of the few, or really, possibly the ONLY Early access game I've played more than half an hour AND enjoyed thouroughly. sadly, any Early Access game I've played prior to this has fallen under one or the other but not both, be it because of lack of time, or lack of interest, or just genuinley bad games.

That being said, I can definitley see this not being everyones cup of tea, but It is a very interesting game to say the least. the controls take some getting used to and the gameplay is different than anything i've played before but it is lots of fun none the less.

to me, it kind of feels like what i'd expect you'd get if you mixed a space-sim like X with an arcade or action shooter like ye olde doom or wolfenstien. it's a great game for people who want to try something a bit different than most any game today, and it's worth a buy, even if you have to wait for a sale.
