About This Game

Experience the epic journey of Nuna and Fox as they search for the source of an eternal blizzard that threatens the survival of everything they have ever known.

Never Alone is an atmospheric puzzle platformer developed in collaboration with the Iñupiat, an Alaska Native people, drawn from a traditional story that has been shared across the generations.

Guide both characters in single-player mode or play cooperatively with a friend as you trek through frozen tundra, leap across treacherous ice floes, swim through underwater caverns and face enemies both strange and familiar. (NOTE: Local co-op play requires at least one Xbox 360 or equivalent game controller).

On over 75 "Best of 2014" lists and winner of "Best Debut Game" at the 2015 BAFTA Games Awards as well as "Game of the Year" and "Most Significant Impact" at the 2015 Games for Change Awards, nearly 40 Alaska Native elders, storytellers and community members contributed to the making of the game.

You'll explore awe-inspiring environments, perform heroic deeds and meet legendary characters from Iñupiaq stories — all narrated by a master storyteller in the spoken Iñupiaq language.

Features

  • Play as both Nuna and Fox — Switch between the two companions at any time with one button press, or play side by side in local co-op mode, as you rely on the unique skills of each character to succeed in your quest. Nuna can climb ladders and ropes, move heavy obstacles, and throw her bola at targets to solve puzzles. Fox can fit through small areas that Nuna can't reach, scramble up walls, and jump to great heights.

  • Brave the harsh world of the Arctic — Run under, through, and atop the unstable structures of an abandoned coastal village. Explore the eerily quiet treetops of a mysterious, frozen forest. Brave the fierce winds of the eternal blizzard. Only with the aid of Helping Spirits will Nuna and Fox have any chance of survival in a land where survival seems impossible.

  • Unlock fascinating video insights — Elders, storytellers, and other members of the Alaska Native community share stories and wisdom about their culture, values and the amazing Arctic world encountered by players in over 30 minutes of interviews.

I've encountered quite a bit of glitching....and the game play can be kind of slow sometimes. It's really hard to play it on single player sometimes due to the computer jumping off the ledge when I don't want it to. I couldn't tell whether it was a glitch, but I couldn't get the fox to jump from the water to the ledge, causing me to get stuck on the level. The game is really lovely, and the art and story is beautiful, but I have to say the gameplay does get on my nerves at time

This is an okay game with a very good story. It is half cultural documentary, and half gameplay inspired by such folk stories.

The Art Direction is great, but the controls feel slow. It isn't very gameplay heavy, and you kind of just get bored by repeating things over and over that aren't challenging.

It is good enough to make me want to finish it, it is a fantastic homage to the people it was made for, and quite stylish, but there isn't riveting or exciting gameplay to be found.

I played it in Single PLayer, I would def reccomend for a parent/child first game scenerio, absolutely

a nice and cute little indie platforming game and really well done too (its like playing a little documentary about iñupiaq people and their life style) .
-plot : from what i understand ,the stroy is from an iñupiaq folklore ( represented also in iñupiaq drawing art style) about a girl and her spiritual fox pet trying to find the source of a blizzard that is destroying here village and stop it (life lesson ) narrated by an older in iñupiaq language + they also added around 30 short videos about the iñupiaq life style and their culture .
-graphics : beautiful 2.5D/3D sceneries , most of the time its just ice and water but still looks amazing and the characters are really cute specially the fox .
-gameplay : as any platform game , you need to jump, climb and solve little puzzle to advance in the story but this time the devs added new stuff like using the wind to jump long distances and using sprites to show you the way and creating new paths for you (with the help of the fox) , their 2 main characters , the girl nona and the fox and you have to switch between them constantly in order to advance in co op mod it would be fun but playing with AI isn't that great cause sometimes you need to be quick to solve a puzzle but the fox or the girl (AI mod) don react fast or just froze and you die or sometimes you need one of them to move or to stay still but then don't do it and you die too , good thing there is a lot of checkpoints so you don't have to start all over again .
- the only voice acting is for the narrator and its in iñupiaq language witch is a huge plus , the B.O is good too .
-didn't face any bug or glitches except for the AI , wasn't really a pain but still bothers me in some levels ( that's why they insisted on co op ) .
-19 story related achievements ( very easy to get them by just playing the game) + 4 for the dlc ( also story related)
-steam trading cards also
cute and fun game to play + you learn some good stuff about the iñupiaq people however the dlc was boring compare to the main game in my opinion so wait for sale to get them both
8/10

After playing Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons i decided to pick up this game and hoped to be amazed again...

Well i was blown away by the atmosphere, the adorable girl and her cute fox.

However i can't say anything about the story because that would spoil the whole game experience right away and i want you to experience that on your own.

After all this game is fairly short but definitely worth the money for the experience alone.

In case you just wanna see how the game is before you even buy it well view my video and i hope you enjoy it.

NOTE: Only watch the video if you don't mind to get a little story spoiled.

Beautiful and insightful that is both very relaxing and extremely infuriating depending which part you're playing. Quite inconsistent gameplay, but it offers various puzzles of smoothly increasing difficulty. If you have the patience for the occasionally stupid AI and somewhat wonky controls, the game will reward you with a very rich experience.

Yea its nice,

buuuut its slowpaced, which isnt a problem in its own, but combined with the incessant remineder of the existant of eskimos, (I know its a game about um, but pop ups of history?) they could hae been more sublte.

All in all its not a bad game, just kinda boring.

But hey, If you're a fan of the "game is art" group, go for it.

But this is just a slow paced, koopa-less snow mario for 15 bucks, if it were cheaper, i'd have nicer things to say.

While the setting is rather unique and the game offers quite a bit for people actually interested in the lifestyle and lore of the Inuit, the actual gameplay falls short.
Sluggish controls and being oftentimes unintuitive in how to proceed take a lot from what fun can be had - at least if you play it as single player. The overall pacing and flow may be improved by coop; but then Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons probably offers a better experience while being designed for single player in the first place.

Looks, atmosphere and idea are appealing enough, but the game itself fails to deliver.

A flawed gem

I... I seriously don't know what to make of this game. I wanted to like it, I really did, but perhaps, just perhaps, I expected it to be something it was never meant to be in the first place. It certainly has a lot of good will in it, that's for sure – but does it make for a fun game? It's a co-op experience, but does it compliment it? It has a unique (culturally) story, but does it work?

Let's try breaking it down into what's good (+) and what's bad (-).

The breakdown

(+) Really nice graphics. Although the full effect is reached by having a fairly simple geometry (it's mostly snow and water, but the water looks really great) covered in a generous amount of blur and bloom, it does create an atmospheric eye-pleasing image.
(+) Great premise. A game based on genuine eskimo stories? Count me in!
(+) Cute protagonists. Yes, I just listed that as a pro.
(+) Some decent mechanics. Although they are often misused or not implied clearly enough. No one wants their hand held, but come on, you can't just invent a completely new puzzle type 5/6 into the game and expect it to be figured out instantly, which is a cause for frustration.
(+) Nice narration. Genuine eskimo narrator, how neat is that? But, despite the claim in the extra footage that eskimo stories were like movies, the narrative is not movie-like, not by a long-shot.
(+) Nice extras/collectibles. It gives away a certain educational vibe, but the extras, which are picked up as collectibles in the game, are actually documentary shorts (24 one-to-two minute pieces in the main game, and 5 more in the DLC). They are missable, however, and the game weirdly does not encourage you to seek any hidden areas, so I missed about 6-7 shorts total, and I had no desire to replay the whole game in order to find them.

(-) Game is really short. Judge it as you will – it could be seen as an advantage in a game like this, but there certainly could've been room for more story. It's barely 3 hours long, +1 hour max for the DLC.
(-) Story is very bare-bones. The story is akin to the myths of how things came to be, such as old ethnic mythos of how sun came to be etc. That doesn't necessarily translate to a satisfying story. Don't look for motivations in some events that happen here. Some could enjoy it, I, however, didn't.
(-) Game is buggy. It could slip past your eyes, but we played it co-op, and encountered quite a few geometry bugs, bugged spawn points skipping whole sections of game after dying etc.
(-) Collectibles are missable. Reminds a lot of Deadlight in that regard... You'd want that extra content, because finally for once the extras are great, but you're not willing to go through the increasingly exhausting game for them. So you just YouTube them.
(-) DLC is poor. It's short and underdeveloped, it doesn't utilize mechanics from the main game enough, and it has a really bad ratio of new environments to playtime you spend in them. You just get stuck in a screen-size room, only to move on to a similar screen-sized room meters away.

So, is it worth it?

As a part of a bundle? Yes. As a huge, 75-90% discount? Yes. Full price? I would never pay full price for a game like this, I just couldn't.

This game, I must say, I highly praise for its atmosphere, beautiful graphics, and over all Indigenous feel to it. It's not a game that you want to rush through, as it might accumulate up to 5-6hrs of game play, including the DLC, though its beauty and coziness makes you want to cherish your playtime with the game.

9/10, very nice feel, atmosphere, story and Indigenous aspect. Could have just a tad bit more gameplay
DLC is very worth it.

Pros
- Nice and smooth gameplay.
- Puzzles not too frustrating.
- Loved the cultural diversity.
- Lovely graphics.

Cons
- No replay value.
- Foxtales mode could've been better

Major Con (Cant stress this enough)
- Made me cry halfway through the game (Dont wanna give out the spoiler but really wish the game developers would've thought twice before doing such a horrid thing)

Lovely game, good visuals, great music, touching story.

I really loved pretty much everything about it. I was intrigued by the cultural insights, and really enjoyed learning about the traditions of the Iñupiaq, and the game did a really good job of telling the tale that was narrated. The puzzles were not always trivial, but I never felt frustrated that they were unsolvable. The whole story was very moving, and approachable at the same time.

Never Alone was a very quick and story rich game. Nothing too crazy, but you can complete both the core game and DLC in under 3.5 hours. I probably won't touch the game again, but I don't regret spending the money on it.

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is an awesome platformer about Nuna and the Fox. They are on a quest to find the source of the eternal blizzard and to stop it. It has beautiful graphics but the controls are lacking and should be better. There are mini educational movies which talk about the history of the Alaskan tundra and its people. The only thing that hurts this game are the controls, the story is good (except the ending was WTF) and the graphics are great. For you achievement seekers, is easy to get 100% achievements if you have the DLC.
